If you’re in a crisis, Bristol City Council provides a crisis & prevention fund to buy emergency food, gas, electricity and household goods. The money is given as a grant (you won’t have to pay it back) and can be transferred onto a Supermarket Spend Card. If you are hungry and cannot buy food, your local foodbank can provide you with three days’ emergency food, offer you a warm drink and biscuit, and can talk to you about your situation.
How foodbanks work Foodbanks need a referral, you cannot just show up. Follow these steps to get referred:
1. Get in touch with the foodbank Call or email the foodbank and they can talk through your situation. They will put you in touch with a suitable referral agency. Contact: 0117 979 1399 or info@northbristol.foodbank.org.uk

2. Visit the referral agency Visit the referral agency recommended by the foodbank. The main ones are listed below. They will check if you are eligible and give you a foodbank voucher. North Bristol Advice Centre

North Bristol Advice Centre Help with benefits, debt and more. You can make an appointment to see an adviser face-to-face or get advice by telephone. They can help you: • Check your benefits entitlement • Manage or write off your debts • Appeal a benefits decision (such as PIP or ESA) • Submit charity applications for white goods or furniture • Apply for Universal Credit • Form filling We may be able to provide home visits for over 50s. Healthy Start Vouchers These are worth £3.10 a week per child to spend on milk, fresh fruit and vegetables at shops around Lockleaze. They are for people who are receiving benefits and are either pregnant or have children under the age of four; or who are pregnant and under 18. Free School Meals Children whose parents receive certain benefits (but not working tax credit) are entitled to receive free school meals. Apply online: www.bristol.gov.uk/schools-learning-early-years/ free-school-meals Telephone: 0117 903 7990
School Holiday Meals Some local groups provide activities in the school holidays that include a free meal. Check with them for current dates and times. Healthy hot meals Buzz Lockleaze Cafe Community shop & cafe with healthy lunch options like homemade soup, paninis and jacket potatoes. Buzz sometimes gives away surplus fruit, veg and other donated items. Drop-in to see what they have on offer. Tuesday-Thursday 10am-2pm – hot meals starting from £3.50. Monthly Luncheon Club at St Mary’s Church Meals include a hot main course, pudding and tea/coffee for £5.00. All are welcome. To book a place, call 07533 194486. 12-1pm, second Tuesday in the month (except Jan and August). Taste Cafe at Ebenezer Church Hot drinks from 25p and homemade cakes from 50p, as well as hot snacks and children’s lunches for £1. Thursdays 10.30am-12.45pm (term time only) Meal Delivery Services For people who aren’t able to prepare their own food. You can arrange for hot or frozen meals and you don’t need a referral from social services or a doctor. Charges apply - contact them for details. Get Online Free, weekly drop-in where you can get help to use computers and tablets to get online. Volunteers can help you fill in online forms, including for emergency payments, healthy start vouchers, free school meals and more.
