The Risk of Rewards

FISH Food Drive

Finding the right motivators to encourage children to complete tasks whether at home or at school can be a challenge. Often, when all else fails the tendency is to turn to rewards for completion or compliance.

The Stadium Drive Student Council is once again working with the Oxford/ Orion FISH Thanksgiving Food Drive to gather food for local families. Last year FISH was able to provide 125+ Thanksgiving baskets to needy individuals and families. The food drive not only provides a Thanksgiving food basket, but food donations also help FISH to stock their pantry shelves. Families need all the trimmings to make a joyous and filling holiday meal including:

Rewards are no more helpful at enhancing achievement than they are at fostering good values. At least two dozen studies have shown that people expecting to receive a reward for completing a task (or for doing it successfully) simply do not perform as well as those who expect nothing (Kohn, 1993). This effect is robust for young children, older children, and adults; for males and females; for rewards of all kinds; and for tasks ranging from memorizing facts to designing collages to solving problems. In general, the more cognitive sophistication and open-ended thinking that is required for a task, the worse people tend to do when they have been led to perform that task for a reward. There are several plausible explanations for this puzzling but remarkably consistent finding. The most compelling of these is that rewards cause people to lose interest in whatever they were rewarded for doing. This phenomenon, which has been demonstrated in scores of studies (Kohn, 1993), makes sense given that “motivation” is not a single characteristic that an individual possesses to a greater or lesser degree. Rather, intrinsic motivation (an interest in the task for its own sake) is qualitatively different from extrinsic motivation (in which completion of the task is seen chiefly as a prerequisite for obtaining something else) (Deci & Ryan, 1985). At Stadium Drive, we work hard to express the importance of quality. In addition, we strive to cultivate an environment that encourages grit and perseverance, which better positions our students to be motivated to achieve internally rather than externally. Students don’t need a reward to do ‘good’. They work to do ‘good’ because it’s what is supposed to happen, no matter how many tries it takes. Kohn, A. (1994, December). The Risk of Rewards. Conferences Conferences will be held on November 6 from 12:00-3:00 PM and on November 9 and 11 from 4:45-8:30 PM. If you have yet to schedule a time to meet with your child’s teacher, be sure to do so soon. Conferences are an excellent time to have undistracted dialogue about student progress in learning.

tutorial on the checkout process.

The Stadium Drive School Store will come to your child’s class on November 11 and December 9. Here are a few of the new items to expect: gel pens, Dolphin pencil grips, wallets, bracelets, elephant pencil sharpeners, assorted stress balls, Smencils (limited quantity) and more. Watch for new items to be featured on SDNN, on our website, and in the school store brochure. Most items range in price from $.25 - $2.00. Profits from the store help to support the Stadium Drive Student Council.

Based on teacher and student input, we also purchased several picture and chapter books for the entire school to enjoy. We also added new technology, by purchasing additional iPad minis and OSMO tangible play games to support student thinking and learning.

A BIG Thank You to the PTO volunteers who operate the store! If you have some time on Wednesday mornings and are interested in helping with the school store please contact Sue Louvar, PTO President.

Book Fair The Scholastic Book Fair is coming. We had two very successful Scholastic Book Fairs last year. I want to share some of the ways your generous support of the book fair have benefited the students at Stadium Drive Elementary. Using the profits from last year's fairs, we were able to purchase over 30 new eBooks that students in grades 3-5 can check out individually or classroom teachers can use with the whole class. Click here to view a 3 minute

If you haven't visited the school library recently, we just replaced the student furniture with new 60' round tables, and cantilever chairs that have a subtle rock to them. We also added a 48x72 Lego table that the students love to explore. The students are really enjoying the new updates and changes. This year we would like to use profits to continue adding new titles to the library in both eBook and book format. We also want to focus on creating additional studentcentered zones, where both lower and upper elementary students can enjoy exploring their books, and technology. We appreciate your past support, and look forward to your continued support of the Scholastic Book Fair, as we help put books into students’ hands, and improve the Stadium Drive Elementary library for all present and future students. There's also still time to support the classroom libraries of Stadium Drive teachers. We will be collecting Scholastic "All for Books" donations until this Wednesday, November 4th. Each teacher will be able to spend all of her collected money at the upcoming book fair to add many great new titles and series classrooms. This is a great way to support the library, teachers, students, and other children in need. Click here to watch a quick two minute video that explains the program. News from the PTO With close to 475 people in attendance, including almost 250 trick or treaters, our first ever Trunk or Treat was a huge success. The PTO would like to thank Mrs. Barry and Mr. Murray for all of their help and support. Thank you also to all of the parents that helped us before the event, and to all of our families that donated close to 20,000 pieces of candy! Finally, a big thank you to our nearly 40 families that decorated a trunk and passed out candy. We had many fun decorations to choose from for our “Best Trunk” contest, but in the end the participants voted for trunk number three provided by the Rossi family. They will enjoy a four pack of tickets to Michigan’s Sea Life Aquarium at Great Lakes Crossing Mall. Looking to get a head start on your holiday shopping?
