LOHS Freshman Biology Students Create Websites Freshman students recently created websites for a biology project on ecosystems with the guidance of their science teacher Mrs. Jenna Bendle. These sites feature the wide variety of ecosystems and species that are found in Michigan. The project also included food webs, energy pyramids, and symbiotic relationships among the species in the ecosystem. The websites provide information and resources on where these ecosystems are located and suggestions for a visit. Check out these student designed sites: • Michigan Coniferous Forests: http://coniferousjackpines.weebly.com/ • Michigan Wetlands: http://michiganwetlands.weebly.com/ • Michigan Coastal Dunes: • http://michigancoastaldunes.weebly.com/ • http://freshwatercoastaldunes.weebly.com/ • http://coastaldunes.weebly.com/ • Michigan’s Deciduous Forests: http://amnic-michiganforest.weebly.com/ • Michigan Freshwater Habitat: http://freshwaterhabitatinmichigan.weebly.com/ • Jack Pine Forest: http://visitjackpine.weebly.com/ • Michigan Ecology: http://michecology.weebly.com/
LOHS Poetry Contest Winners The Lake Orion High School Media center hosted its first ever school poetry contest this spring. Congratulations to the following winners: 1st Place – “Inner Demons” by Sophomore Lauren Lowry 2nd Place – “Puzzled” by Junior Addison Gribbin 3rd Place – “The Color of Music” by Trevor Cameron You can go to this link to read the winning poems: http://www.lohspoetrycontest.org/index.html
Inner Demons An internal flame burning inside. Opens feelings that cannot hide. Hot tears running down your cheek. Even the strong appear to be weak. Hearts will break but they will repair. Put on a smile and hide the despair. A trick of the eye and a mysterious smile. Hide the pain and make life worthwhile. Stop the hate and stop the scolding.
Continue the game instead of folding. Wipe your tears and close your eyes. Shut your mouth to stop the lies. Open your lungs, breathe in deep. Lay your head down and try to sleep. Nightmares devour your mind throughout the night. Fight them off with all your might. Wake up and put on your best disguise. And finally, your inner demons will meet their demise.

Explore the Genius of the Inventive Mind The free ebook and iPad app It’s Cool to Be Clever tells the true story of Edson Hendricks, an inquisitive schoolboy in the 1950s who is bullied because he is so smart. He finds comfort in an imaginary world where he has machine parts and no biological organs or emotions. Years later, Edson’s strange capacity to “think like a machine” helps him create a way for computers to communicate. His “connectionless” network design is used in today’s Internet. The story by Leanne Jones includes narration by Edson Hendricks and an original musical score. In addition, there are loads of pre-Internet emails, anecdotes and other computer science archival material, 12 video interviews with Edson Hendricks and three audio interviews of author/composer Leanne Jones. The story combines history, computers, the Internet and powerful messaging about bullying. This free iPad app is ideal for all ages and especially for anyone with an interest in Internet history and inventing. Web Resources
Discover a Web of Interesting Books Hosted by Scholastic, You Are What You Read is a place where students can share information about their favorite books. After creating a simple profile, participants name the five books that mean the most to them. Members of the network can then see who else likes the same books and discover other books that might also interest them. The site offers resources that you and your students can access without joining and creating a profile. In the Bookprint section, famous people have listed their favorite age-appropriate books. The Book Links feature offers webs of books that are related to each other. For example, if you enter the title Green Eggs and Ham, a web of books that are likely to interest students is generated. Click on any book title in the new web to generate yet another web of related titles. (Big Deal Book Newsletter – 6/1/2012) http:/youarewhatyouread.scholastic.com/ kids/

“How to: One Example of Digital Assessment” Need ideas on how to create authentic assessments using technology? Check out this article and resource link posted on Edudemic.com by Terry Heick on May 18, 2012. “Project-based learning provides an excellent structure of authentic learning using digital resources. Digital work allows for digital portfolio creation, communication of learning results to a wide audience, and often simple revision of learner work to reflect feedback and assessment results. Georgia educator Kati Searcy gave a presentation at the Social Learning Summit 2012 (see link below) to demonstrate how free web tools can be used to assess understanding of content from History/Social Studies–and even helpfully included a rubric! http://www.slideshare.net/katisearcy/digital-authenticassessment-ppt?ref=http://edudemic.com/2012/05/howto-one-example-of-digital-assessment/

Name the Food Ingredients Do your students know what’s in some of their favorite foods? The Museum of Science+Industry in Chicago has designed a game to promote awareness of the ingredients in common foods. Would You Eat That? presents a food and a list of 10 ingredients that students may not expect to find in that food—anything from Acesulfame K to Yellow #5. Students choose the four ingredients they think are in each food item. If they don’t name all four on their first try, they’ll get clues and more guesses. Free accounts never expire and you won’t be bugged to upgrade. If you never go over your 5 GB of storage space, you will never have to pay to use SugarSync.
