THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY YOU MIGHT NEED A LOCUM
One of the worst aspects of running any sort of medical practice – GP, dentist, optician, physiotherapist, pharmacist, or even vets – is the fact that people can get ill. Just because you are a doctor doesn’t mean that you are immune, or because you are a physiotherapist and in rude health you can’t catch Covid. We all get ill from time to time, but in most cases, it is not going to have a major effect on our lives or how we run our businesses. However, when you are in the medical sector it can have a very direct effect on your patients. Now, if you have a GP practice with, say, five doctors, you may well be able to manage if one goes sick for a few days, but what happens if one goes sick for several weeks? You can’t run a surgery on 80% of your practice team for very long.
It’s not just illness that can have an effect. We all need a holiday now and then, and in the medical sector we get quite well-paid, so from a financial point of view we can afford to take a month off and go and sit in the sun. Or perhaps visit relatives in Canada or New Zealand that we don’t see very often. When you go on a trip like that and for that distance, you want to spend a decent amount of time with your relatives or friends to catch up with each other. However, this is another sort of situation where your medical practice is going to be short of an important team member for a fair length of time, although in the case of a holiday one can at least know how long the gap will be, which is not the same as being ill.
Other Issues Then there are other issues. For instance, while it doesn’t happen all that often, you can get called up for jury service. Trials happen all over the country. How they select jurors we don’t know, but it is probably just something as simple as sticking a pin in the electoral roll. Bad luck if it happens to be you, because, as we have said before, you have no idea how long a trial may go on for. Some go on for months. Then there are things such as accidents. A senior team member could be involved in a car crash that wasn’t their fault that leaves them with a long recovery period ahead. It may even have been their fault, but that doesn’t alter the situation from the point of view of your practice. One of your team could get suspended for one reason or another, and again you don’t know how long that could take. A doctor or a vet might need some time off for paternity leave. They could also need to take time off to care for a relative who is ill. Who knows? The point of all this is that you cannot just turn your patients away because you don’t have enough people to deal with them, so the answer is, of course, that you need to hire a locum.
Now, hiring a locum is not too difficult in most cases. Some practitioners work full time as locums for their own reasons. The money is good, and it means that they will get to work in different locations and perhaps spend a few weeks in a different part of the country. From your point of view, it means that you can carry on running your practice as usual, so your patients don’t have their treatment interrupted. However, there is one big disadvantage to hiring a locum and that is the cost. And if you have to hire one for months, that is going to add up to a very large chunk of cash indeed. That is why you need to take out locum insurance for your practice. Now, not all practices are run in the same way, so it follows that requirements for a locum will vary from one to another. This is why, at Approachable Locum Insurance, our locum insurance policies are totally flexible. That means that we can provide you with a policy that is tailored to your precise needs and budget.
