What You Need To Know About Locum Insurance For Pharmacists There are a considerable number of pharmacies in the UK ranging from the occasional one-man business up to the Boots and Lloyds of this world. Indeed, Boots has 2,465 branches and Lloyds has over 1,400. There are no less than 66,800 registered pharmacists and in 2018/2019 they handled over 1 billion prescriptions between them according to Statista(https://www.statista.com/statistics/318874/numbers-of-pharmacistsin-the-uk/).

Of course, not every pharmacy owner is the size of Boots or Lloyds, but even if you only have one outlet you will suffer the same problems when it comes to a pharmacist going sick or off on holiday for three weeks. You are going to need a locum, of that there is no doubt. Unfortunately, pharmacists are just like everyone else in one respect and that is that they can get ill and need time off work. Also, just like everyone else, there is no advance warning when people get ill.

Of course, when this happens you still have to provide your usual service to your customers by way of fulfilling prescriptions and providing advice for lesser health conditions. That means that you are going to need a locum from time to time in order to cover for absence of members of your team. After all, your customers still need their prescription medicines, and an awful lot of them need them every month when their GP prescribes ongoing treatments.

Unfortunately, locum pharmacists are not cheap. One figure quoted for NHS locum pharmacists in the London area is £37.00 an hour. That works out at about £1,800 per week for a six-day week. If you have to employ a locum for two or three months, which could easily happen, that is a big chunk of extra cash out of your takings. This is why you are advised to take out pharmacist locum insurance to cover you for these very large and unexpected overheads that can happen without warning. Even if you do get a warning, there can be no saying how long you will need a locum to cover. For instance, although it doesn’t happen too often compared with other situations, your pharmacist might be called up for jury service. There is no real way of saying how long a trial may go on for. Some of them run for months. Much the same thing can apply with illness. If your pharmacist is only away for a couple of days with a bad cold, for instance, you can probably manage to handle that. But if it is something more serious, that could go on for weeks before your pharmacist has recovered and is able to come back to work.

No Two Pharmacies Are The Same However, it also has to be said that no two pharmacies are exactly the same, although you all do the same jobs. It follows that the pharmacist locum insurance that is perfect for one pharmacy will not be perfect for another one. The good news is that, at Approachable Locum Insurance, we can tailor insurance cover for locums for you so that it exactly meets your requirements.

So, just as an example, one pharmacy may be able to manage for a couple of weeks, so can allow for a delay of that length of time before the insurance policy kicks in, while another may need to hire a locum immediately. If you are the first one, you will save money on the premium compared with the second one. Perhaps you could manage for four weeks? It is entirely up to you because we can provide the cover whichever way you need it.
