NALSA

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I have seen first hand how the pharmacy locum industry in South Africa has grown in leaps and bounds over the past six years. Being a locum has changed from a part time occupation to a fantastically varied and rewarding career option for many healthcare professionals and in particular doctors, pharmacists and nurses. If you are wondering whether locum work can be as rewarding and fulfilling as a permanent position, the following are the top reasons derived from a recent survey that was conducted amongst locums in South Africa. Work availability: There are many job opportunities available right now across South Africa due to the continued growth of retail pharmacies and the global focus amongst governments and leading healthcare organisations to drive primary care as the most important building block for long term health. This gives locums plenty of short term contract options across all provinces in South Africa. Registering with a national locum agency will ensure that there will not only be locum work available, but also that locums can choose which assignments they wish to take on. Decent remuneration: On average Locums get paid a 20 - 30% higher rate than a permanent position. However, uninformed locums have fears about a consistent income. Our survey has shown that if timesheets are completed to requirements and handed in weekly or even at the end of their shift, payment is mostly one week in arrears. With SA Locums payments have been ramped up to be paid on the first working day after the timesheet was received. NALSA’s MISSION The purpose of the National Association of Locums in South Africa (NALSA®) is to provide a foundation of industry standards and ethical guidelines for companies specialising in locum and term contract staffing services. These principles are the

Steady work: If you are a reliable, ethical locum providing regular availability updates to your staffing agency you will find many current placements being extended to you, when they find you to be a good fit for them. Being prepared to work regularly will keep you on the agency’s locum work roster and insure you a steady workflow each month. Freedom: One of the biggest advantages of locum work is the option to choose both where and when you wish to work. Gain knowledge: Working across a spectrum of client locations and environments will drastically increase your knowledge and experience, giving you greater confidence across different systems and processes. This will also insure that you become a valuable asset for any company that you work for and in turn make you a valuable and sought after employee. Work opportunities: Locum work can also open other career doors, for example, providing additional training in certain areas. Making the most of all of these will look great on your CV. Quickly filling your working diary: Being registered with a reputable staffing agency and sharing your availability for locum shifts will ensure that you don’t have to worry about a full month’s income Variety: Choosing locum assignments in different industry environments provide the locum a chance to work and gain experience in a variety of jobs. This broadens the locum’s scope and choice of jobs they know they will in future prefer for their specific career paths chosen.

cornerstones of the relationship between NALSA® members and their clients. Also to maintain industry leadership by promoting excellence, ethical standards, innovation and a spirit of co-operation for contingent staff.

NALSA’s VISION NALSA is dedicated to promoting a positive industry image through a practical but strict Code of Ethics based upon excellence, honesty, fairness, peer review and reasonable industry standards.

Courageous Living What I learnt from Tori Amos :

Age is just a number

A Love Affair with Authenticity

T

ori Amos, legendary singer, artist, musician, activist and songwriter came into my life when I was 15 years old, by way of her music. She has been a source of inspiration and strength, and a symbol for living with courage, stepping out of shame storms, developing your gifts and speaking out concerning authenticity, worth, human rights and topics that are considered taboo. One of my bucket list items has always been to see her live. So when my man said he had organised us tickets for the Unrepentant Geraldines Tour and that he had organised us backstage passes to meet her after the show, I stood staring at him in complete shock for at least 30 seconds before a wave on indescribable excitement flooded my body! In the Flesh The show was surreal. It was everything I hope for. Nothing I can say would begin to do it justice. She played two pianos concurrently for over 2 hours and performed non-stop with so much heart, skill and art. And then, be still my beating heart, we made our way backstage. There were about 20 people waiting to meet her and it was already very late. What further blew my mind was her availability and the humility

12

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

that she radiated to each person there. She took at least 10 minutes with each person - no rushing, completely present. When she got to us, she shared what had sparked this world tour ... which came about due to advice she had received from her then 14-year old daughter. She said that she had had no intention of doing another world tour. Subconsciously, she has momentarily been tricked by the stories we often believe about what is “appropriate” and at what age. She had recently turned 50 and had decided to shift to performing in piano bars for smaller groups of people. (Nothing wrong with this, playing in piano bars is awesome!) However, her daughter, in her wisdom, reminded her mom of what she stood for, her message, her followers, her art, her legacy, and that age meant nothing. That piece of sound advice is what led to this world tour comprising 73 concerts in 7 months.

Courageous Living

This epic moment, reminded me of how often we get hypnotised by what “they” say is or is not appropriate. Who are “they” anyway, and why do they get to make the rules? They are also just human. No better than you, and guess what, they’re also winging it. YOU MAKE YOUR OWN RULES. We so often argue for our limitations, the majority of them being illusions which can stop us from living fully, from reaching our true potential and divorce us from joy. This doesn’t serve you or the world at large. YOU ARE

SIGNIFICANT AND YOU MATTER. And so do your gifts, opinions and your own special magic.

Create Your Own Story

My invitation to you is to reflect on what is possible. What parts of you might you be neglecting? What do you ache to create? What parts of you do you crave to explore and develop. So that you can become a better version of more of yourself? How can you fill your form and live a life of full potential? YOUR LIFE. How can you shift from a mindset of scarcity and fear to one of possibility and abundance? How can you back yourself and take the leap by giving give yourself permission to play and explore and create? How can you shake off the malaise and apathy and wake up to your magnificence and infuse your essence? How can you live with self confidence and what does that look and feel like?

Brainstorm, set goals. Then live with courage. Back yourself. Be kind to yourself. The quality of your life and experience depends on it.

New Cars in SA

By: Henk Mulder

It’s time to check out some of the new car models available in SA. There’s a lot to be excited about across the spectrum. Here are some of the cars you can expect to see on the road.

Opel Mokka Opel’s launch was the introduction of the facelifted Mokka, known as the Mokka X. The “X” is for crossovers and SUVs from the Opel. The Mokka X has a proven 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with 103 kW and 200 Nm of torque with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Mokka X has 356 litres of luggage capacity. You can fold the split rear bench down to make it 1 372 litres of utility space. Rear passenger space will easily fit two average-sized adults. The Mokka has a sense of sophistication with good build quality.

Ford Everest The new Ford Everest range now comprises several versions, with a choice of three trim levels XLS, XLT and Limited. There are two available engines a 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre. Options include a manual or automatic transmission as well as 4x2 or 4x4. The 4x4 models has an intelligent system that diverts power between the front and rear axles, as the driving circumstances demand. There is an active transfer case featuring high and low range, rear differential lock and 225 mm of ground clearance. 4 wheel drive versions will be available with terrain management system with four modes: Normal, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand and Rock.

Lexus IS The engine range is the same as the previous IS, with a 2.0-litre 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine in the E and EX grades. The motor develops peak outputs of 180 kW and 350 Nm of torque. It’s a very capable engine, and the Lexus easily eats up the miles. The abundance of torque lower down in the engine’s rev range makes it easy to overtake and its 8-speed gearbox handles the power well. Fuel consumption averaged out at 7.9 L/100 km. That is good news at the petrol pump

Audi Q5 Potent 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel. This engine makes a positive impression, it’s smooth and refined. There’s a wide spread of torque, and the 8-speed automatic gearbox works well. There is also an impressive 2.0-litre turbo diesel derivative. It is a nice, flexible engine. The mainstay of the range should be this 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 188bhp and 400Nm of torque. The new 3.0-litre diesel is a strong performer. You can feel the power when you put your foot down. At around 1,750rpm you will be doing 130Km/h, and you won’t even hear it.

VW Amarok 3.0L V6 TDI The flagship Amarok version will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel motor. The 3.0-litre engine, is also used in the Volkswagen Touareg, with outputs of 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque. The V6 motor will feature an overboost function, which will increase the power and torque outputs by 15 kW and 30 N.m respectively for bursts of up to 10 seconds at a time. There are also design changes that includes a new front grille. New colour and wheel options include 20-inch rims.

Mercedes-Benz C class cabriolet Summer is here and Mercedes-Benz has timed the launch of its new C and S Class Cabriolets perfectly.. The C220d offers 125 kW and 400 Nm of torque from its 2.1-litre turbo diesel engine. From 0 to 100 kph will take 8.3 seconds before reaching a limited top speed of 231 kph. Fuel consumption figure of 4.5 L/100 km. The petrol-powered line-up starts off with the C200, offering 135 kW and 300 Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. Acceleration to 100 kph is 8.2 seconds with a top speed of 235 kph. Fuel consumption - 6.0 L/100 km.

FASHION

FASHION: REFLECT EXCELLENCE IN YOUR STYLE By: LEMANJA MEARS

“It’s a new day, it’s a new dawn, it’s a new life for me” Michael Buble sets the fashion ringtone for 2017 with this beautiful song. This is the year for success, a year of achievement; personal growth and financial gain and the time for transformation in the areas of personal transparency, accountability and excellence. Nothing reflects your authenticity more than the clothes you wear.

T

his is the year to incorporate a style that reflects excellence. Suits are still in fashion, especially fabricated suits with no shine. Play with different colours but in particular different shades of grey, navy blue or opt for a dark burgundy (as long as the colour and shade compliments your complexion) Don’t be shy, accessorise. This will reflect your spark of originality which is important to avoid the risk of blending in with the rest. Make a statement of independency and excellence by choosing an accessory that suits your individual style. Anything from a leather bracelet, a lapel pin, a collar bar, cuff links or a stylish watch will round off your look. Now that we have that covered, let’s take a look at which shirt to wear with your blue, grey or mahogany suit in order to make a lasting impression.

20

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Formal occasion or evening event: a black shirt will create a sharp look and make a stylish impression. A clean and classic style: the white shirt leads the way . Day time looks and summer style: a light blue shirt will create a “preppy” vibe. When making an important business deal: opt for a dark colour (not black) that will intensify your suit as light colours will brighten your suit and lighten the vibe – not good for creating a business like impression. To create a long lasting impression: Be brave and wear a soft salmon shirt, this will add subtle and stylish colour to your suit. To make a bold statement: Wear a patterned shirt For a contemporary look: A dark grey suit with a deep red or burgundy shirt and no tie. According

FASHION to Trend Spotter, red and grey creates a powerful combination when worn together. The warm red tone plays off the cool grey hue, often appearing richer in colour. The bold pairing creates an unexpectedly stylish outcome that’s both contemporary and cool. From dusty, desert reds to rich oxblood hues, this outfit can be worn in numerous ways. Choose between muted tones and deep berry hues for a more elegant look. If you want to wear a vibrant red, however, it’s best to break it up with some pattern to ensure the look isn’t too intense. Also, remember that deep reds and burgundies will pair best with mid to dark shades of grey, while washed-out reds suit light to mid tones. Now that you have come this far, it is time to take a look at how to match your shoes with your suit colour: 1. Navy Blue Suits: • Black shoes • Brown shoes • Red or burgundy shoes 2. Medium And Light Grey Suits: • Black shoes • Brown shoes • Red or burgundy shoes 3. Brown Suits: • Brown shoes (especially a shade lighter) • Red or burgundy shoes Do not pair with: • Black shoes

4. Charcoal Grey Suits: • Black shoes • Burgundy shoes Do not pair with: • Brown shoes 5. Burgundy suits: • Brown shoes • Dark grey shoes Do not pair with: • Black shoes The next question to ask is: ”Do I match my socks with my shoes or with my pants?” The answer is “your pants,” when your socks match your shoes it will appear invisible, therefore match it with your pants and your shoes will make a more bold statement. There is however some general exceptions: • For a more “sporty look” match your socks with your shirt • To create an “arty look” feature independent socks, like argyles, as long as it blends in with your outfit • A more unique style requires matching the socks to the colour of your tie or pocket square Be sure to round off your look with a neat hairstyle and a clean shave. If you have a beard, use scented beard oil and a balm to keep it in tact. And whatever you do... don’t forget the cologne.

The Perfect Photo Safari By: Natasha Bertram Photos: By Dr Landi Lombard

G

ame reserves provides the perfect photo safari break for many city bound wildlife enthusiasts. South Africa has numerous game reserves to choose from.

To be able to photograph and experience the awe inspiring Big Five, which is basically on our doorstep, is a real privilege. This is why it is important to remember that we are the guests in the equations and to always handle the animals with respect. Another thing to remember in wild life photography is that you’re dealing with WILD LIFE, it is important to be safety conscious. Getting out of motor vehicles with dangerous roaming animals around is just not worth that winning photo if you end up injured or dead.

Here are some tips to increase the success rate of you photo safari.

• The Golden Hour: This is the first hour of light in the morning and the last hour of light in the evening. At these times you are guaranteed to get your better shots. The height of the sun relative to your subject, as well as the soft tone of the light makes it ideal for photography. Yes you have to get up early if you want to get that great photo.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

• Be Patient: There will be days when every animal is walking in the opposite direction or maybe miles from where you setup your camera. That’s life, it will happen. You have to learn to be a hunter and learn how to stalk the animals. Get to know their habits. This will make you more successful. • Know your camera: When that perfect photo opportunity comes round, it is not the time to try and figure out how that shutter speed setting works or that aperture story you read about somewhere. • Gear: Telephoto lenses are a must for wildlife photography. Without a decent lens you will not get those great shots, animals start getting nervous when you get near them and this changes their behaviour. The less you intrude into their habitat the better. Also use a bean bag or tripod for a steady base. • Subject: Try and get your subjects eyes and face in focus, that makes the photo so much more appealing and establishes a connection. • Protection: Make sure your lenses and camera equipment is clean and well protected against dust, bumps and scratches. Also protect yourself, wear a hat and use that sun screen when you’re out in the African sun. • Lastly, don’t forget to charge your camera battery and don’t leave the SD card in your computer at home. No card - no photo.

For me it was like a great adventure, the landscape glides by your window with ever changing scenery, without me having to lift a finger, get into a taxi or bus to see something new. The growing popularity of cruising, particularly on large river vessels is easy to understand. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers. The pace is sedate with a no rush atmosphere, with a 6 day cruise often covering little more than 50 miles along a rural canal. “Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths and never be left behind as their floating hotel glides gently along. We made many stops along the route and it gave you the opportunity to immersion yourself into the culture and history of the region with your barge hotel waiting around the corner. TRAVEL - KALAHARI

Kgalagadi Lodge Visit: www.kgalagadi-lodge.co.za

T

he Kgalagadi Lodge, situated between the red sand dunes of the Kalahari, is the ideal desert haven where modern meets wilderness. Only two-hundred and fifty kilometres away from Upington Airport and five kilometres from the popular Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, this family-owned and operated lodge is perfectly located for those travellers that seek excitement. Kgalagadi Lodge opened in 2012 and soon the owners, Sarel Jacobus (better known as SJ) and Denise Koortzen realised the need for a restaurant at the lodge. Whether it was for the travellers looking for a quick pit stop en route to their destination or to cater for guests staying at the lodge in search of a delicious meal and a place to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. In September 2014 the owners met the demand and a brand

new 50-seater restaurant opened at Kgalagadi Lodge that offers authentic south african cuisine. The restaurant is perfectly situated to allow patrons to overlook the Botswana border and enjoy the Kalahari sunset. Every detail within the restaurant has been hand-picked by SJ and his wife, Denise indicating that Kgalagadi Lodge restaurant is truly a reflection of their dedication and passion. The dĂŠcor is inspired by a modern african feel and was done by Denise. Most of the wooden furniture was hand made by SJ. The menu includes standard dishes such as steak, burger and schnitzels, as well as a few seasonal dishes. In winter there is always local venison on the menu and warm, home cooked meals to keep guests warm in the cold Kalahari Desert. The winter menu includes homemade

butternut and orange soup with freshly baked farm bread and hot desserts – such as everyone’s favourite malva pudding, sprinkled with small marshmallows and nuts with ice cream or custard. The malva pudding is put in the oven until the marshmallows are puffed and crisp. In the summer the owners go fishing in Henties Bay in Namibia to make sure the most deliciously fresh cod is served direct from the sea on to your plate. The restaurant has received rave reviews from surprised guests and tourists who were surprised that you could enjoy such fresh fish in the middle of the Kalahari Desert. Between April and May is the familiar nabba (Kalahari truffle) season in the Kalahari and the restaurant offers the most delicious nabba dishes such as brandy Flambé springbok fillet with a creamy nabba sauce.

HEALTHY EATING AND LIVING WHILE PREGNANT

By: LEMANJA MEARS

H

ealthy eating during pregnancy is critical to your baby’s growth and development. In order to get the nutrients you need, you must eat from a variety of food groups, including fruits and vegetables, breads and grains, protein sources and dairy products According to the American Pregnancy Association a healthy diet during pregnancy is not one where there is a dramatic calorie restriction as dieting to lose weight during pregnancy can be hazardous to you and your baby, especially since a weight loss regimen may restrict important nutrients such as iron, folic acid and other important vitamins and minerals. Therefore avoid popular diets such as Atkins, South Beach, The Zone, Tim Noakes or even a raw food diet whilst pregnant. Instead focus on fine-tuning your eating habits to ensure that you are receiving adequate nutrition for the health of you and your baby. Avoid junk food, refined sugars and soft drinks, instead turn to a more balanced diet as healthy eating during pregnancy is criti-

46

cal to your baby’s growth and development. Incorporate: • Organic fruits & vegetables

HEALTH

• Whole grain breads and grains • Healthy protein sources and dairy products It has been recommended by Huggies South Africa, that women consume an extra 300 calories per day while pregnant. The food you eat during your pregnancy will have a direct effect on your sense of wellbeing, your energy levels, metabolic processes and your baby’s growth. In the same breath, it is also made clear that your overall nutrient requirements are higher during pregnancy than at other times, so you will need to ensure you eat foods, which are of a high nutritional quality. It is not so much the number of kilojoules you will need to increase as the nutrient loading in your food. Increase foods that are rich in: • Iron, it helps in the formation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around your body and to your baby. Iron-rich foods are red meat, eggs, spinach, chicken (especially the liver) and good quality cereals. • Vitamin C is needed to help with the absorption of iron into the body - so aim to eat some fresh citrus fruit each day. • Protein will help you to work effectively, feed your baby’s growing body and provide you both with amino acids. These are known as the building blocks of life because they are so vital for us to function, opt for fish, chicken, dairy, eggs & legumes • Calcium is essential for your baby’s bones

to form and harden. It is found in milk, dairy products and soy products, which are labelled as being fortified with calcium. Almonds, green leafy vegetables and fish with edible bones are also good. It needs to be consumed in sufficiently high quantities during pregnancy to meet both your own and your baby’s demands. • Daily vitamins and minerals; Vitamins A, B1, B2 B6, B12 and Vitamin C are all needed in extra quantities during pregnancy (consult your health practitioner if you plan on taking vitamin supplements). Rich sources of vitamins and minerals include orange or yellow fruits and vegetables, cereals, legumes and pulses, beans and peas. Minerals such as iron, zinc and magnesium are all contained in fruit and vegetables as well. Green leafy vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, beans, peas, squash, salad leaves and zucchini are all good sources. • Fibre cannot be absorbed by the gut. It is a bulk-forming agent which helps to relieve constipation. It moves the contents of the gut along and prevents constipation and also other complications such as haemorrhoids. Good sources of fibre are fruit and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, legumes and pulses. Ensure you have a good daily intake of water. •Folate is a nutrient which is found in green leafy vegetables, liver, poultry, legumes and peas. It can be difficult to eat a sufficiently high level of folate, even in a healthy diet, LOCUM LIFESTYLE

so that the likelihood of neural tube defects occurring in the embryo is reduced. This is why a daily supplement is recommended. It is preferable to start taking this up to 3 months prior to conception. Folic Acid is the synthetic form of folate. The current recommendation for women who are trying to conceive or who are in the first trimester of their pregnancy is 500 micrograms of folic acid per day. These come in tablet form and are available from pharmacies. They can be taken alone or in a combination with other vitamins, minerals and iron. (consult your health practitioner) • Carbohydrates, Complex carbohydrates come from wholemeal bread, cereals, rice and grain. They will fuel your energy and help your baby to grow. Potatoes, beans, oats and corn are also good natural, sources

48

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

but avoid refined sugars as that will only increase insulin levels. • Iodine is an important mineral for the development of your baby’s brain and nervous system. None of us need very much of it, but without it there can be significant problems with thyroid function. If you are eating fish or seafood a couple of times a week, you are unlikely to need a supplement. Check with your midwife or doctor about the right supplement. 250-300 micrograms/day is the recommendation. • Water is the perfect drink during pregnancy. It contains no calories, quenches the thirst and is readily available and free. It is also difficult to drink too much of it. The problem for many women is that they don’t like it because it doesn’t taste like anything.

HEALTH

Flavouring it with some lemon or lime juice and adding crushed ice is an option. All alcohol needs to be avoided during pregnancy because it crosses the placental barrier and could potentially affect your developing baby’s brain and nervous system. Large amounts of caffeine can lead to miscarriage so try to minimise your caffeine intake to under 2 cups of filtered coffee a day and no more than a couple of cups of tea. Chocolate, energy and cola drinks also contain caffeine so be careful when consuming them especially id you are trying to reduce your daily caffeine intake. During pregnancy it is important to maintain a healthy exercise program, walk regularly, swim or participate in pilates, whatever you prefer, keep the body mobile and fit but don’t

overdo it! Reduce stress levels during pregnancy, keep a positive mindset and laugh a lot. Pamper yourself and take time out to rest during the day and sleep for at least 8 hours at night. Focus on your baby. Use this time to also prepare yourself for the birth of your baby, read books, sign up for antenatal classes or take free online antenatal classes with the Baby Centre. Follow this link: www.babycentre.co.uk/ e1042530/sign-up-for-free-antenatal-classes. Spend time in nature and book a couple of romantic evenings with your loved one, cherish the time you still have alone as your life will soon embark on a new adventurous fun and responsibility filled journey when you welcome your precious little new born into this world. Enjoy this wonderful time.

HOME IMPROVEMENT: 10 TIPS TO ADD VALUE TO YOUR PROPERTY By: Terence von Molendorff (CEO Red Pepper Properties) 1. Paint

One of the most simple, cost effective improvements of all is paint. Freshly painted rooms look clean and updated and that equals value. When selecting paint colours, keep in mind that neutrals appeal to the greatest number of people, thereby making your home more desirable.

2. Low Maintenance Gardening

Shrubs and colourful plants will add curb appeal to any home but when shopping at your local garden centre make sure that you “think green.” Purchase plants that are native to your region or plants that require less water and maintenance.

3. Wellpoint/borehole and irrigation

Water restrictions are a reality in South Africa,

50

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

so consider getting a well-point or borehole installed, as this will ultimately pay for itself with all the water savings. Irrigation is not too expensive and a good looking, well watered garden adds great value to your property.

4. Kitchen Updating

You don’t have to start from scratch to create a winning recipe. For maximizing your home’s value, kitchen updates are key. Start by swapping out just one item, such as a stained sink or ancient microwave for shiny new stainless models. Even small kitchen updates will add big value to your home. Change your countertops to granite or marble, its cleaner and much better looking than those standard wooden laminated ones.

PROPERTY

5. Bathroom

The bathroom is the workhorse of your house. It’s a high wear and tear area, so you want to keep it functioning well and make good-looking upgrades along the way. People like to feel relaxed, like they’re in a spa. Drop-sinks are old news, people want the under-mount sinks or sinks on top of the vanity. Heated floors are also a great option if you looking for a complete do over. Keep it clean. Dirt and grime can become embedded in bathroom surfaces very quickly. You can also freshen it up with new grout.

6. Pool installation/upgrades

Pools can be a tricky upgrading factor, as there are many different options available when it comes to pooling needs ie. colours, size and design. Go for something standard, not everyone will enjoy that rocky beach pool you had in mind. Heating also has a few options, if you want the pool heated, go for the best power saving option, it will pay off in the long run.

7. Epoxy coat the garage floor

A shiny epoxy floor coating will have you, and your car, feeling like you’re driving into a showroom every time you come home. Epoxy resists oil stains, beads water, and wipes clean like a kitchen counter. All you need is a weekend to sweep the dirt out and paint the epoxy on.

8. Flooring

There are so many new options available when it comes to flooring, so if you are planning on updating the floors of any rooms in your house, make sure you are well informed about all the available options, and don’t fall into the trap of just replacing the existing flooring with the

same ones as before.

9. Security

Security is a factor of concern for all people but there are also some factors that need to be considered before diving into upgrades. Boundary walls can be a great addition but make sure they fit into the existing aesthetics of your property. Also decide if solid walls or palisades are the best option. Cameras are also a good option, but make sure it is installed in a way that they blend in and don’t have wires hanging all over the place. The key here is to have security look as good as possible. You don’t want your house to look like a prison with barbed wire around the walls.

10. Braai

South African heritage is to braai, so when updating or adding a braai you will have to make sure it looks great. Go for good quality finishes, and use builders who have referrals. An existing braai can easily be made modern with new fire bricks, and by cladding or tiling the outside.

Start slowly. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. List the things you want to change and the updates you would like to make. Don’t worry about organization, just write it all down. Take a guess on how long you may want to live in the house. If you’re planning on selling, talk to your real estate agent and set your plans in motion.
