NALSA - LOCUMS

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
In the past few weeks I was again reminded of the extreme importance of a healthy happy work environment and maintaining the status-quo with regard to the employee/employer relationship. Quality staff are hard to come by, and if they are treated fairly and both recognised and rewarded for work beyond those expected, a symbiotic relationship is formed that is reflected, in consistent quality customer service, their customers, company executives and shareholders all seek and desire. At the core of the above concept is a human trait that is very important to me, namely ethics. In the locum industry there are ethical guidelines which when followed will make life easier for all parties, from the Locum, through to the Client, through to the Staffing Agency placing the locum. As a locum your career will involve a series of assignments; some short term, and some longer. Locums that build long term relationships with locum agencies of choice and ethical

practices, enjoy more successful placements, receiving the best assignments and options. Such relationships are built on mutual trust. Adhering to strong ethics of best practice and care standards, will ensure that your professional relationships are long-standing, financially rewarding, and ultimately maximise jobsatisfaction and performance, for all parties. This is not a one way street. The staffing agency placing the locum has its own ethical standards to adhere to that will in-turn make them the agency of choice that locums will want to be associated with not only in the short term but as a long-term locum partner. According to a recent study done on “Temporary Employment Services in South Africa” by Haroon Bhorat, Aalia Cassim & Derek Yu in October 2014 the following was found: The perception generally, is that labour brokers employ low skilled workers who are then employed under poor working conditions without an employment contract. This however, has not been tested using national survey data and we
cornerstones of the relationship between NALSA® members and their clients. Also to maintain industry leadership by promoting excellence, ethical standards, innovation and a spirit of co-operation for contingent staff.
PRESIDENT: Andro Engelbrecht
examine this further in the report. We find that more than half of the 784 434 workers employed in the TES sub-sector in 2014 were sales and service workers, while about 26 percent were elementary workers. This result suggests that semi-skilled sales and services workers are over-represented in the TES sector and elementary workers under-represented when compared with the occupational breakdown at a national level. The notion that this sector is dominated by unskilled workers is therefore not borne out in the data. The conclusion from above information, is that staffing agencies who are placing higher skilled employees or contractors, such as pharmacists, nurses and doctors cannot be labelled as labour brokers as some in the past wanted to, but that these staffing agencies are in fact valuable contributors to the healthy growing trend of the employment market towards the use of independent locum contractors and other skilled professionals workers as the global way forward. NALSA’s VISION NALSA is dedicated to promoting a positive industry image through a practical but strict Code of Ethics based upon excellence, honesty, fairness, peer review and reasonable industry standards.

Melia Zanzibar Jetty Discover Yourself! Discover Zanzibar!
Karibu! Karibu! Whether you are of European, Arabian, Indian, African descent or from anywhere else in the world the islands of Zanzibar say Karibu which means ‘you are most welcome’ in Swahili. The very word ‘Karibu’sums up the spirit of hospitality that Zanzibar prides itself with. Boasting over 30 immaculate beaches in two regal islands, it’s no wonder Zanzibar has been one the biggest tourist destinations for decades. The name Zanzibar itself stems from the Arab term Zangh Bar which means ‘Negro coast’, so if you are looking for beautiful coastlines, then you are in the right destination.
The Zanzibar Culture
To say that Zanzibar’s culture is a concoction of exotic served with a dash of culture would be an understatement. It is a culture influenced by its Arabic, African and British roots, yet maintains a strong foundation with the Muslim religion at the core of this cultural cocktail. Zanzibar lies in the East of Africa in Tanzania. The main languages spoken are English and Swahili.
Zanzibar Cuisine
As you can imagine, a culture that is as richly influenced like that of Zanzibar must have a buffet of exotic meals and dishes. Tastes that are worth experimenting, with and some dishes that you can only have once just to boast to your friends about. Zanzibar’s diet consists mainly of seafood dishes
such as fish, squid and lobster prepared with an Indian, Portuguese and Arabic touch. Seasoning and exotic spices play a huge part in the cuisine. Rice, maize and fruit such as coconut, mango and citrus are considered staples. Some of their must-try dishes are the Boku-Boku, a maize dish prepared with a tomato and onion sauce mixed with a dash of cumen. If your taste buds are feeling a bit more adventurous then you can help yourself to pepper shark, a shark dish prepared in spicy soup. ‘Pwepwe we nazi’ is also receiving rave reviews with food loving tourists. You don’t have to know how to pronounce the name of this dish but it’s an octopus dish served in coconut milk. There’s also a dish named ‘Pilla rice’, a rice meal infused with coconut and spices. If these dishes are too adventurous for your taste buds, then just settle for grilled fish while you chew on Zanzibari snacks.
Land Marks and Resorts
Zanzibar is divided into two main Islands, the Island of Pemba and the Island of Unguja. It flaunts beaches and beach resorts flanked by palm trees and white sands. With natural sights such as the coral caves and the caverns of Kiwengwa giving the curious tourist a worthwhile holiday experience. Take a cruise to the Stone Town Island to see Prison Island, a historical monument that holds great history of slavery. View Mfani Palace or the Ngame Kangwe fortifications and ruins of Mtoni Palace, and if that doesn’t quench your thirst for historical knowledge, then the Makururani Grave Yard should be a ghost-busting experience since it’s the place
where many of the islands Arabic rulers were laid to rest. When it comes to resorts and accommodation, Zanzibar offers anything from simplicity to luxury. You can choose from a Zanzibar beach hotel or go super luxurious with a 5 star Zanzibar resort. You can even choose bungalows or villas.
Chumbe Coral Park
Health First
Recently the Tanzanian government and South African government abolished the need for yellow fever certificates. The exotic trees and dense Zanzibar climate makes it rife with mosquitoes with a lot of incidents of malaria so it’s best to get a vaccination for that too. It is better to get an all-round check with your GP before catching that Zanzibar flight.
Melia Zanzibar
Religion vs Holiday fun
As said before, Zanzibar has a rich Muslim culture so it still holds very conservative values. While you are having your fun you have to respect the mosques as sacred buildings and not tourists sights. So if you are not Muslim we suggest you steer clear of these holy buildings . When making your bookings (which should be done months in advance), keep in mind Muslim religious festivals like the month of Ramadan or month of fasting for Muslims, as these will greatly influence your holiday experience.
Diamonds La Gemma
For some, the religious aspect might put a damper on their holiday fun, but look on the bright side, there are a host of experiences available to you exclusive to Zanzibar. When making bookings be aware that from June to October the islands of Zanzibar becomes even busier than usual. The island has a variety of colourful festivals such as the Festival of the Dhow, which celebrates the Dhow countries. There’s also the International Cultural Festival as well as the Mwakakagwa Festival also known as the New Year Festival. All these festivals combine dance, art and music celebrations which attract tourists from across the globe and in the same token a lot of scams, so be aware!

Sporty and exclusive interior.
The interior of the new BMW X4 reveals a synthesis of sportiness and exclusivity. The X4’s body is mounted 37 mm lower than that of the BMW X3. The driver and front passenger sit 20 mm lower and the rear passengers 28 mm lower, creating the feeling of a classic sports coupe. It is a sensation reinforced by the rear seat bench, which comes with the type of continuously moulded side bolsters normally only provided by two individual seats, but still offers space for three passengers. Equally impressive is the load capacity available, 500–1,400 litres, which can be used in a wide variety of ways thanks to the standard 40:20:40 split rear seat bench. Everyday usability is enhanced even further by the standard power tailgate. It is available with the extra convenience of the optional Smart Opener, which allows it to be opened with a movement of the foot. All X4s include BMW’s iD-

MOTIVATION
INSPIRE ACTION IN YOURSELF AND OTHERS
W
hat makes you “buy in” to you and others? You invest in yourself because it’s important to you. You choose to do something and commit to act on it because it will benefit you and you feel it will serve you and your objectives. You “sense” this as a “gut” feeling of “YES” and a knowing and often feel inspired by the possibility of what it might mean for you and your life – professionally and personally. Humans align with what they believe in – activities, groups, brands, companies, leaders and goals which speak to their values and aspirations - who they view as an extension of who they are. They engage because they WANT TO and they are the ones that create sustainable results, businesses, causes and practices, not those who feel obliged to. They do it FOR THEMSELVES! This is true for any committed and inspired action any of us undertake. We all know the saying, “What’s in it for me?” How do you create “buy in”? The success of being able to lead effectively depends on the power of a shared idea. You need to harness communal beliefs and goals so you make the idea a reality. Create an experience everyone wants to show up for and be part of. TED Speaker, Simon Sinek speaks about this with his “Golden Circle”
formula. He illustrates how people “do not buy: WHAT you do - they buy: WHY you do it!” Successful leaders find ways to get their teams to buy into the WHY and make the idea relevant to them. To be part of something that speaks to their core beliefs and the way they relate to and experience the world. As Simon points out in his talk, the part of your brain (limbic brain) that is responsible for your feelings and decisions responds to the “why” as this speaks to aligning your feelings with your actions, goals and associations. Tips to “buy in” to yourself so that others “buy in” to you too: 1) If you are a leader, consider how you can inspire action in others by aligning your burning “why” with what they believe. Where is the common ground? Where do the shared desired outcomes cross over? How can you meet them where they are? Motivating them, to show up for themselves by speaking to their core values? When you identify and speak to the “why”, people will go the extra mile - giving blood, sweat and tears for something that holds meaning for them and this will not seem like a sacrifice but a given. It replaces resentment with a sense of purpose. Speak to what they desire to ex-
perience, to be part of and believe to be true about the world. If your team does not resonate with your why, then chances of collaboration and dedication are minimal. 2) This can also be applied to you in your personal capacity. If you show up for a job/relationship/activity that does not connect to your “why” on some level, you will most probably feel unfulfilled and uninspired. If you want to inspire action in your life, ask yourself, “What is my why?” What moves me into action and inspires me? What ideas, ideals and movements do I want to associate with to extend who I am into something bigger? It is imperative to have an idea of your core beliefs and motivations so that you can find ways to DO MORE OF THAT. By being more of who you are, you feel more fulfilled and authentic. These collective associations keep filling your cup with inspiration to keep you going when life throws you a curve ball. Focus on being the best version of yourself you can be. It will add deep richness to your experience of life and will give you a sense of purpose and belonging to something greater. My advice: Find the WHY and find ways to live it. This is the first step to creating the life you want to live personally and professionally!

Together they founded N/a’an ku sê Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary, Namibia’s only charity lodge, a place where the conservation of animals and culture are interlinked. N/a’an ku sê’s Lifeline Clinic 10 years ago, Dr Rudie van Vuuren and Marlice van Vuuren opened the Lifeline Clinic with mutual friends, Chris Heunis and Jannes Brandt. It began as an outreach service where the doctors, Rudie, Chris and Jannes, travelled to Epukiro to treat sick patients who otherwise had no access to free healthcare. Since then it has become a full time clinic with a resident doctor and nurse.
We’re a small but dedicated team ambitious and innovative, and we won’t ever stop until we achieve our vision. Welcome to our Dream... www.naankuse.com N/a’an ku sê’s Lifeline Clinic, established in rural east Namibia, is dedicated to the health and welfare of the San Bushman community. Some 3 500 patients are provided with free medical treatment every year, and the Lifeline Clinic has become the heart of an otherwise poverty stricken community. The outreach program has carried this vital medical care further afield, with doctors attending to patients in surrounding areas. The Community Health Worker Scheme allows them to impart first aid and basic health care skills to members of the community, attempting to increase the cycle of care and keep it running smoothly. They strive to create sustainable and long-term solutions in Namibia. It is their vision to play a pro-active role in nature conservation, because they firmly believe that they hold this invaluable heritage in their hands for future generations. The N/a’an ku sê Collection consists of four exclusive and very diverse properties, the N/a’an ku sê Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary being the heart and soul of the Collection. Zano Sithetho kick-started his label, Skorzch, after winning the SA Fashion Week Renualt New Talent competition and the Nokia Youth in Design Award in 2012. He has since established himself as a menswear designer and tailor with a specific focus on suits.
I
grew up wanting to create things. I initially wanted to be an architect, but that dream never materialized. I’m really passionate about suits. I think they serve as a great definition of a man. A man with style knows a great suit when he sees one. I find pure pleasure in crafting a suit from inception to the end product. My influences used to be Ozwald Boateng and Burberry but I’ve learnt to dig deep within myself to truly find my own talent and uniqueness. Making perfect suits has been my passion for a while now, so I am sticking to that.
Zano on suits
A suit is not just a representation of your current status in life, but more an illustration of your future ambition. When you wear a good suit, you’re always a step ahead of your competitors. In the corporate world, good suits go a long way from power in the board room to signing business deals in private jets. It is often said: “Don’t dress for the position you are in

right now but dress for the one you are gunning for.” I personally wear suits everyday because for me they are quite comfortable and it’s brand representation. Whatever the occasion, make sure you look good, and there’s no better way to do it than wearing a suit. Suit accessories vary largely based on preference. However, a few things make suits outstanding; a good watch, a hat, good belt and shoes, a pocket square, lapel flower, happy socks and a great character. We only sell custom-made suits. We tailor them for you. A tailored suit is better because of many reasons. You get highly involved in the making of it. From choosing a fabric, lining and the cut. Tailored suits fit way better than store bought suits. The dimensions make all the difference.

MEDICAL
Point of Care Testing T he driving notion behind Point of Care Testing (POCT) is to bring the test conveniently to the patient. This increases the likelihood that the patient, physician, and care team will receive the results quicker, which allows for immediate clinical management decisions. POCT includes, to name a few, Cholesterol screening, Glucose testing, Cardiac markers, Drugs of abuse, Infectious Diseases, and Hemoglobin. All of which, FIT Healthcare can supply. The goal of POCT is to collect the specimen and obtain the results in a very short period of time at the location of the patient so that the treatment plan can be discussed before the patient leaves. Faster and less expensive POCT devices have increased the use of POCT approaches by making it cost-effective for many diseases. With test results in hand, you can identify critical changes in your patient before they manifest into more serious conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes etc… Blood testing is a simple yet powerful strategy to help you proactively take charge of your patient’s current and future health. A well-chosen complement of blood tests can thoroughly assess their overall state of health, as well as detect the silent warning signals that precede the development of serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Many diseases and disorders are treatable when caught early, but can severely impair the quality and length of a patient’s life if left unattended. Identifying these hidden risk factors will enable you to implement powerful strategies such as proper nutrition, weight loss, exercise, supplements, and medications in order to prevent progression to fullblown, life-threatening diseases.

The emphasis in medical industry has certainly shifted in regards to Cholesterol testing in recent months. With the introduction of the Mission Optical Cholesterol Meter to the South African market, this has made Lipid Profile Testing more affordable and as a result it is no longer seen as a luxury but rather a necessity in health awareness and disease risk management.
The Mission Optical Cholesterol Meter offers four test results with the Lipid 3in1 Strip: - Total cholesterol: this is the total amount of cholesterol in your blood. - A calculated Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): this is referred to as “bad” cholesterol high levels can lead to heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis. - High-density lipoprotein (HDL) : this is referred to as “good” cholesterol it helps remove LDL cholesterol from your blood. - Triglycerides: when you eat, your body converts the calories it doesn’t need into triglycerides. These are later used in your body for energy. People who are overweight, diabetic, or consume excess alcohol can have high triglyceride levels. Cholesterol levels are measured in mmol/L and the optimal levels are: • LDL: <2.59 mmol/L • HDL: ≥1.03 mmol/L but ≤ 1.55 mmol/L • Total cholesterol: ≤ 5.17 mmol/L • Triglycerides: <1.70 mmol/L Regular exercise can lower LDL and raise HDL levels in some people. Even low-intensity activities, if done regularly, can assist with weight control, diabetes, and high blood pressure – which are all risk factors for heart disease. Photography is for Everyone T
his article is not about being a perfect photographer, but rather how to return to the childlike delight that a new toy gave, and how to let that true emotion inspire you. Remember the feelings you had as a kid; playful enthusiasm, optimism, invention side of the brain on a roll, without any fear of judgment? As a creative that’s the headspace any photographer wants to be in. Let’s get that inspiration back on track. So just make time and play, play, play! Organise a Saturday off, get to an inspirational place and get trigger happy! With the introduction of digital cameras, after the initial investment of the equipment, the cost of taking wonderful pics is virtually nothing. To improve your photos, it helps to concentrate on things like texture, shape, colour and composure. But if you really still want to have this pastime by next month rather than limiting yourself to the rules of photography, have a playful nature. Take, for example, camera angle. Most people see themselves as a steady point and make the landscape revolve around them.
But if you’re willing to bend your back a little, a whole world opens up to you. A classic example of this is when taking photos of children, if you are willing to get “on their level” suddenly the world looks completely different, and this will reflect in every photo that you take. The enthusiasm (or insecurity) of the photographer can be seen in photos and will lead the audience on the same journey of emotions that the photographer had. If it was a happy, fun story that resulted in the picture, that will be conveyed. So sometimes, rather than getting caught in a technical world of rules and know how, let your sense of drama lead you. Also, getting too technical too fast might make you feel vulnerable and confused and might even kill your passion for this beautiful art form before it even began. Subject is another thing that can often kill enthusiasm. Sometimes when we look at the photography of world travellers and paid photographers, our pastime can suddenly look very arbitrary and small in comparison. That is only because we forget that an apple can be the best subject matter in the world, bugs in our backyard,

or children (what a blast!). Point is, it is not about subject matter, but rather how you, as an enthusiast, utilise your subject matter. The next tool available to all is light. The definition of the word photography is: “Painting with light”. How beautiful is that? So, to take your photography to the next level, start experimenting with light. Put subjects in full sun, half sun or shadow. Use alternative light sources, like lamps, mirrors, electronics basically, anything that produces light can paint a pretty picture. A great hint to keep in mind is that no two shadows are the same. Light reflects off everything, but probably, the closest white wall. The lighter and bigger the surface, the more light it will reflect and reflected light is almost always prettier than direct light, and if it’s sidelight, slightly from above, the subject will look amazing. So for beautiful portraits, place your model next to a big, reflective surface in the shade. This way you will get constant, beautifully soft light that will illuminate skin and throw a warm glow on your model. Then move the model’s body, face and posture until the light looks just perfect.

PHOTOGRAPHY
When taking photos of people, as we all do for family holidays and children, for example, we all know exactly how dreadful the most beautiful child can look in a picture the moment she becomes aware that a camera has been switched on. Suddenly smiles become scowls, soft skin looks distorted (almost as much as the mother’s when overwhelming fear of another ugly photo hits home) and the once soft, beautiful lines of a five year old turns into the rigid body of a skunk. (The same rules apply to adults, but they can be so touchy about the subject) A few things can be done to alleviate this sickness. For one, keep your camera on when not shooting and wait for the panic to pass and then take that pro shot just when your target has passed initial fear stage. Or, when pressed for time, take two shots, keep you camera in exactly the same place, but lift your head. This will imply to your audience that the otherworldly photography moment has passed and that they can relax. Using only your still-in-action trigger finger, take another three shots of your unsuspecting victims and be assured that one of those will be the pic you’ll frame. If you, the photographer, can make a joke just before this sneaky tactic, you get extra points! To develop a basic sense of photography, you can begin by experimenting with the three ways of setting the light on camera: Aperture, ISO and Shutter speed. By manipulating these three settings you can achieve multiple different outcomes from exactly the same scene. Even though we will not go into the technicality of this, a good hint is to keep two of your settings exactly the same and experiment with the third setting to get amazing results. An easy way to explain aperture is the amount of light that is allowed into the camera through the lens opening with each photo taken. Aperture changes depth of field. That basically means how blurry or in focus the background is. Shutter speed is how fast the lens opens and closes. The numbers might be confusing if you do not understand that most SLR cameras can open for quite a few seconds (long exposure photos), but normally the speed is much faster than a second, for instance 1/125 is 125th of a
32
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
PHOTOGRAPHY
second. Reasonably fast, to catch action without blurring the photo. Basic rule of thumb for a fully focused photo, the higher the speed of the subject, the higher the shutter speed. For a fast moving object like a car, athlete or horse, a very high shutter speed is needed. For our purposes though, it might be fun to break this rule, or take it to extremes. To freeze a drop of water at a very fast shutterspeed will do the trick. The opposite is also true. To make a person look like a ghost, leave shutterspeed low and blurring will occur on all that moves. Ever seen those cool photos with lines instead of cars or the beautiful stars with paths that can be traced across the night sky? Jip, long shutter speed. Hint: For a shutter speed lower than 1/100sec, use a tripod, as your shaking hand will influence the photo. ISO is based on the films of old, where different film was used for different situations. It’s basically how fast your film exposes to light. If portraits were taken the lowest possible film speed was used, as it gave perfect grain for that soft beautiful skin, but for journalistic photos a higher ISO film was used, as to capture fast situations. That’s why you remember your grandma’s portrait photos with a smooth finish and newspaper photos (requiring action photos) often grainier. In digital photography the pixels imitate the same behaviour. The more light and less movement, the lower ISO can be for a more finished look. The last offset piece of advice is to keep your personality. A photo is a wonderful thing and can very often be more of a mirror than we will ever expect. It portrays almost as much of the photographer as it does the subject matter. Do not try to change that! Even with the untrained eye of people who look through an exponential amount of social media every day, this is exactly what your audience will expect of you. They want to see what you saw and experience the delight of your moment. There are not so many people interested in clinical photos intended on framing information, but almost everyone wants to be amused, delighted and taken on a journey of an imaginary kind. Do not disappoint them! Elsofie Pitout 082 391 5149

Designer WEDDING DAY TOP TIPS • Use alcohol free bubbly on the morning before the wedding. Alcohol on the day might relax you so much that your eyes appear sleepy on the pictures. • It is almost never necessary to have an emergency kit. Talc powder, needle and thread, safety pins, plaster, Cutex remover, tissues, cotton wool, double-sided tape. • If your wedding dress has a low back, make sure not to wear underwear for a while before putting on your dress. The imprint of the bra straps might be visible and spoil the gorgeous back of your dress. • The hair and make-up should be done before you put on your wedding dress. • Wear a robe or a top with buttons so that you do not have to take your clothes off over your head. • If you and your brides maids are having snacks before getting dressed, make sure that all of you wash your hands before touching the wedding dress. • Start by putting on your shoes first then the petticoat and lastly the dress. • Most of the wedding dresses will go over your head. Use a silk scarf to cover your hair and make-up and not a single hair will move. • Cover your upper body with talc, before putting on the dress. The talc will absorb any dampness on your skin. • Make sure that the neckline of the dress is centred before closing the zip / buttons and loops / lace up at the back. It will be difficult to move the dress once it is closed at the back. • If your dress has lace straps on the edge of your shoulders, it might be a good idea to use double sided tape to keep the straps in place. When using double sided tape, wipe the skin with Cutex remover to remove any oily substance from your skin to help the tape stick. • If your dress has a train, you will have to walk in a circle, when turning around. If you turn too quickly, you will step on the train. A train that can be hooked up to the back of the dress is much more comfortable than one that hooks up to your pinkie. That will enable you to dance and hug your guests without the train being in the way. • Do not swop your wedding shoes for other shoes later on (with lower heals), as the length of the hem will differ and you might step on your dress and damage it. • Book a styling trial. This will ensure that you know exactly what you will look like on your wedding day. • Don’t set your heart on a specific style. Ask the stylist to try a few styles, then choose the best one. • Don’t wash your hair on the day of the wedding. It makes it difficult to style. • Don’t be scared to use extensions. With extensions you can have the hairstyle of your dreams. • Weather conditions play a major part in what your hair will look on photos. Ask your stylist what brand/type of hairspray she prefers and buy an extra bottle for the reception and photos. • Healthy hair is always beautiful, so take care of your hair by using good products in the months leading up to the wedding. • Hair accessories can be beautiful, BUT it should not be the first thing your guests see when you walk down the isle. Go for a small head piece or flower. • Don’t be impulsive and cut your hair or follow a trend after your trial. You have a lot of time for change after your wedding day. • Ask to have your stylist to come to the venue. We all know a trip to the salon can easily take 4 hours or more. You also want undivided attention from your stylist. • Your hairstyle should be unique. Ask to have the bridesmaids hair done in a different way. This will compliment you and make you stand out on your special day.
Makeup • The most important thing is to look at your chosen artists portfolio or website. It is crucial to not only have a qualified artist, but also one that does the type of work that appeals to you. • Book a trial. Not only will this set your mind at ease, but if you have an allergic reaction to any products you still have time to make a change. • Refrain from any facial treatments at least a week before your wedding. Sometimes your skin can get irritated and you don’t want a surprise on your wedding day. • Eyebrows frame your face. Make sure you have them groomed before your wedding day. This is one of the most important things that contributes to a beautiful final look. • Ask to have your hair done first. Stylists use a lot of products that could land up on your face. This way your face can be cleaned before you have your makeup done. • Ask for a touch up kit. You will need lipstick and powder to ensure your makeup looks great
throughout the day. • Inform the artist if you have contact lenses and of any known allergies to certain products. • Basic rule: Choose eyes or mouth. If you are going for a bold eye look, have natural lips, and if you choose a subtle eye look, dark lips look great. • Eyelashes can be amazing, but you will ALWAYS have the possibility of a strip lash to lift or even fall off. This can ruin everything , so if you want fuller lashes get eyelash extensions. They can be pricey, but it’s the one day you can not afford to take chances. • Lastly, it’s a big gamble to ask a family member or friend to do your makeup for your big day unless they are qualified and well trained. I have seen many brides regret this decision. • Your wedding day is NOT the place to save money. Make sure you have no regrets. • Always hire a good photographer. Pictures last a lifetime, bad ones as well.

Wedding Shoes
G
one are the days where the shoes play second fiddle to the gown. Brides are playing it up with the latest trends and colour! Still, many women choose a pair as an after-thought, but selecting suitable shoes go a long way to keep both feet and bride happy throughout the big day. There are various factors to consider when getting the perfect pair of shoes, such as comfort, design and the height of the heel. The shoe design also needs to complement and not overshadow the gown. An elaborate gown goes well with a simple pair of shoes. All brides would want to look stunning from head to toe and enjoy their ceremony, minus the agony of having blisters at the end of the day. It is crucial to get a comfortable pair of shoes and to break them in before the wedding. “Higher heels are definitely more elegant, but the height of shoes affects the bride’s posture. For our 10cm heels, we add a front platform to make it more comfortable to wear. Medium heels are the most popular option, as the 6cm heel gives you a bit of height, but is
BY ANELLA
also great for walking elegantly, yet still comfortable enough to walk and dance effortlessly.
What is in?
LACE: The romance factor that a lace option offers is undeniable. Extremely popular with brides who want to complement their romantic theme by incorporating a touch of lace in the shoes. WEDGE: Many brides are getting married outdoors on grass, decking or uneven surfaces. Whilst often only offering a very narrow wedge, it might give you a bit of an edge on an uneven surface or a lawn so your heels don’t sink into the surface. BLING BLING – is still a hot favourite – as a little sparkle just catches the eye, as well as lights up the room as you dance the night away. PEEP-TOES - Current popular designs are peep-toes with either lace, flower details or Swarovski crystal embellishment. LOW HEELS: Brides love the 2cm kitten heel options. Comfortable and great if you are tall. PLATFORMS - A favourite with the shorter brides, needing extra height. A platform offers extra support, and is actually very comfortable. COLOUR - In terms of colour, I do

feel most of our brides are going for the classical all white or offwhite colours for their gowns and shoes. BUT we offer a DYE option in other colours as well. BALLET PUMPS – In all the colours of the rainbow, with ribbons and bows on the front. Play around, and custom design them according to your dress. A comfortable safe option, ensuring the bride is able to enjoy every moment in pure comfort.
What is out?
Discomfort! Shoes that are too tight, too small, too high or cut into your feet. This is your wedding day! Brides picking heels that they can hardly walk on. Comfort first, not the design. Taking your shoes off half way through the evening is a no-no.
Tips on buying and wearing wedding shoes
Start looking early! You need your shoes for your dress fittings. Your hem can’t be done without the correct shoes. Otherwise the length of your gown will be different. Think about where your ceremony will be held. You may want an open toe shoe for an outdoor
wedding or a closed toe for an indoor wedding. Consider the colour of your gown when deciding on your shoes – White or Ivory. Remember the height of your bridegroom. You don’t want to tower over him if you buy too high a heel.
Wear your shoes around the house a few times before the wedding. Try dancing in them. You will want them to be comfortable on the wedding day. So by wearing them a little they fit better. You may at times only see the front of your wedding shoe, but
you will lift the hem to walk. People will see your shoes, so a little detail is interesting. Consider the price of the shoes. You may think you will re-colour them after the wedding, but you may change your mind.

The warm and welcoming Voorhuijs of the Damhuis
DAMHUIS RESTAURANT The Damhuis, one of the oldest buildings
in South Africa and the first built structure in Melkbosstrand, dates back to 1785. During 1781, this empty piece of land was given to Christiaan Brand. During the year 1785, he settled himself and his family, as the first residents on the farm, De Melkbosch. The walls were built with local stone. It has also been recorded that Christiaan Brand caught whales during the late 1700′s and evidence of this is the presence of whalebones, which were built into the walls of the Damhuis. To reveal the whale bone and building materials, parts have been left unplastered for visitors to view. Another important factor is the angular architecture of the original buildings, which was typical of that early period before Cape gables generally became a popular form of Cape architecture. With its thick walls and thatched roof it had originally been built as one of the outbuildings of the farmstead, De Melkbosch. At the time it was called the Visschuur (fish barn) where fish were cleaned, salted and dried.
46
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
The Visschuur became the Damhuis
named after the dam right in front of the house. This dam was the result of a fountain of crystal clear water. The fountain still exists on the property. The building still has a buttress that was built to support its sea-facing wall, which during heavy storms had been pounded by rough surf .
The Very First Occupants
Christiaan Pieter Brand was born in the Cape in 1734 and as a young man joined the Cape Citizen Corps and worked his way up from Sergeant to Captain. During this time he purchased property in Cape Town between the castle and the Salt river in Papendorf (today known as Woodstock) where he lived. In 1780 the French stationed troops along the Cape coast to help the Dutch against possible British invasion. During this time of military unrest, Brand kindly allowed the troops to traverse over his property in Papendorf. As compensation Governor Jacob van de Graaff rewarded Brand with a piece of
FOOD & WINE land covered in Melkbos (a shrub which gives off a milky residue). Brand named his new farm after these shrubs, De Melkbosch (commonly known today as Melkbosstrand). During the years 1785-1814, Brand and his wife made a living from their “kotterskuit” (a cutter, which is a small single-masted boat, fore-and-aft rigged), the Nederland-Afrika, by harvesting fish from the sea and sea shells from the beach. The fish was salted and dried in the present Damhuis. It is also historically noted that the Brand family experienced the Battle of Blaauwberg (between the Dutch and the British), right in front of their Visschuur. They had to flee whilst the soldiers trashed and stole their property.
The sunny and spacious Outside Terrace
Christiaan and his sons are also historically hailed as heroes due to the valiant rescue of soldiers from the British ship, the HMS Tremendous.
The Damhuis Today
In the current Damhuis Restaurant (The Voorhuijs) hangs a painting done by Gladstone Sullivan. This painting depicts the tragic drowning of one of Christiaan and Gesina’s sons at De Melkbosch. This rare painting had been hanging in the original farmstead and was then found again in an old garage. With the passage of time the Damhuis had been transformed from a fish store to a residence. Even though it had gone through a number of changes, the historical importance has been preserved for future generations. The natural water spring is today still very much alive on the property. Today, more than 200 years since Christiaan Brand and his family stayed here, the Damhuis has been declared a National Monument and still stands proud as Die Damhuis Restaurant with its rich history and heritage along the beautiful seaside of Melkbosstrand.

ADVENTURE / OUTDOOR
T
he Great White Shark is arguably the world’s largest known extant macropredatory fish and is one of the primary predators of marine mammals. It is the only known surviving species of its genus. ANCESTRY AND FOSSIL RECORD The earliest known fossils are about 16 million years old. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT Great White Sharks live in almost all coastal and offshore waters which have water temperature between 12 and 24 deg C (54 and 75 deg). One of the densest known populations is found around Dyer Island, South Africa. It is an epipelagic fish, observed mostly in the presence of rich game like fur seals, sea lions, cetaceans, other sharks, and large bony fish species. In the open ocean it has been recorded at depths as great as 1,220 m (4,000 ft). A study tracked a great white shark from South Africa swimming to Australia’s north western coast and back, a journey of 20,000 km in under 9 months.
48
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
ANATOMY AND APPEARANCE Great whites display counter shading, having a white underside and a grey dorsal area (sometimes in a brown or blue shade) that gives an overall “mottled” appearance. The coloration makes it difficult for prey to spot the shark because it breaks up the shark’s outline when seen from the side. From above, the darker shade blends with the sea and from below it exposes a minimal silhouette against the sunlight. Great White Sharks, like many other sharks, have rows of serrated teeth behind the main ones, ready to replace any that break off. When the shark bites it shakes its head side to side, helping the teeth saw off large chunks of flesh. SIZE Males reach maturity at 3.5 – 4.0 metres (11 – 13 ft), and the females at 4.5 – 5.0 metres (13 – 17.1 ft) long and have mass of 680 – 1,100 kilograms (1,500 – 2,400 lb). Females are generally larger than males. It is widely accepted that the Great White Shark can approach 6.1 m (20 ft) in length and 1,900 kg (4,200 lb) in weight.
ADAPTATIONS Great White Sharks, like all other sharks, have an extra sense given by the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which enables them to detect the electromagnetic field emitted by the movement of living animals. Every time a living creature moves it generates an electrical field and Great Whites are so sensitive they can detect half a billionth of a volt. Even heart beats emit a very faint electrical pulse. If close enough, the shark can detect even that faint electrical pulse. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR The shark’s behaviour and social structure is not well understood. In South Africa, white sharks have
a dominance hierarchy depending on size, sex and squatter’s rights. Females dominate males, larger sharks dominate smaller sharks, and residents dominate newcomers. When hunting, great whites tend to separate and resolve conflicts with rituals and displays. White Sharks rarely resort to combat although some individuals have been found with bite marks that match those of other white sharks. This suggests that when another shark approaches too closely, great whites react with a warning bite. Another possibility is that white sharks bite to show dominance.
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
49
ADVENTURE / OUTDOOR
DIET Great white sharks are carnivorous, and prey upon fish (tuna, rays, other sharks), cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises, whales), also seals, fur seals, sea lions, sea turtles, sea otters, and seabirds. Great whites have also been known to eat objects that they are unable to digest. These sharks prefer prey with a high content of energy-rich fat. Hunting techniques vary by prey species. Off Seal Island the shark ambush cape fur seals from below at high speeds, hitting the seal mid-body. They go so fast that they can completely leave the water. The peak burst speed of these sharks is largely accepted in the scientific community to be above 40 kilometre per hour (25mph). They have also been observed chasing prey after a missed attack. Prey is usually attacked at the surface. White sharks also scavenge on whale carcasses. In one such documented incident, white sharks were observed scavenging on a whale carcass alongside tiger sharks. REPRODUCTION Little is known about great white shark behaviour in the way of mating habits. Great white sharks are ovoviviparous (eggs develop and hatch in the uterus, and continue to develop until birth). The great white has an 11 month gestation period. The shark pup’s powerful jaws begin to develop in the first month. Stronger pups consume their weaker womb-mates. Delivery is in spring and summer. Great white sharks reach sexual maturity at around 15 years of age. Maximum life span is believed to be more that 30 years.
50
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
BREACHING BEHAVIOUR A breach is the result of a high speed approach to the surface with the resulting momentum taking the shark partially or completely clear of the water. This is a hunting technique employed by great white sharks whilst hunting seals. Sharks can launch themselves more than 10 feet in the air. SHARK ATTACKS Great white sharks do not typically target humans: for example, in the Mediterranean Sea there have been 31 confirmed attacks against humans in the last two centuries, most non-fatal. Many incidents seem to be “test-bites”. Great white sharks also test bite buoys, flotsam, and other unfamiliar objects, and might grab a human or a surfboard to identify it. Other incidents seem to be cases of mistaken identity, in which a shark ambushes a bather or surfer from below, believing the silhouette is from a seal. Many attacks occur in water with low visibility, or other situations which impair the shark’s senses. The species appears to not like the taste of humans, or at least finds the taste unfamiliar. Further research shows that they can tell in one bite whether or not the object is worth attacking. Humans, in any case, are not appropriate prey because shark’s digestion is too slow to cope with the human’s high ratio of bone to muscle and fat. Accordingly, in most recorded attacks, great whites broke off contact after the first bite. Fatalities are usually caused by blood loss from the initial limb injury rather than from critical organ loss or from whole consumption.
Join White Shark Safaris on one of South Africa’s most popular adventures – great white shark cage diving and viewing. White Shark Safaris is based in Kleinbaai – the Great White Shark Capital of the World – and is a mere 2 hours drive from Cape Town. FAQ Q: DO I NEED TO GET INTO THE CAGE? Everybody will be given the opportunity to get in the cage, but the choice is up to you. Great White Sharks are surface feeders, and viewing from our observation deck is great and provides you with the opportunity to capture these amazing animals on camera. Q: IS DIVING GEAR PROVIDED? All diving gear is provided including clean fresh towels. Q: WHAT IS CHUMMING? In order for us to attract the Sharks to the boat and the cage, and for you to observe these beautiful animals in their natural environment, we lure the Sharks with chum. Chum consists of minced meat, mashed sardines, fish oil and sea water. This smelly mixture will slowly drift away from the boat, creating the chum slick. This is a game of patience and luck. Q: ARE CHILDREN WELCOME ON THE BOAT AND ARE THEY ALLOWED TO DIVE? Children of 10 years and older are allowed entering the cage, only if the parents accompany them. Legal guardians will be asked to sign on behalf of the children. Children are prone to seasickness and the result can be quick dehydration. Sea sick shuttles do operate, but can be very costly! Q: WHEN IS THE HIGH/LOW SEASON FOR SHARKS? The best time to dive is our colder months, from April to October. The predominant wind during our winter season is the north-western wind. Visibility is excellent and water is normally warmer (15 – 20 degrees Celsius or 59 – 68 degrees Fahrenheit). During this time, the Sharks normally hunt seals near Geyser Island and Geyser Rock. During our summer months, September to March, the south-easterly decrease the water temperature to 10 – 15 degrees Celsius or 50 – 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Visibility is often limited, to 2 metres or less.

NEW TAX IMPLICATIONS FOR 2015 Firstly, all proposed tax changes to retirement funds have been delayed until 2016 and even possibly 2017. This means that the increased tax deductibility of up to 27.5% on all retirement funds have been delayed for the time being. More good news - Section 12T of the Act provides that from 1 March 2015, an individual can rely on a tax free savings account subject to the contributions having a R30 000.00 per year limit and R500 000.00 per lifetime limit. Anything over and above the aforementioned amounts shall be taxable at a 40% penalty. Even though this savings account is tax free, it is still subject to Estate Duty. The 1st of March 2015 is also the commencement date for income continuation benefit premiums to no longer

POLICIES ON INSOLVENCY In terms of Section 36(1) of the Act, a policy benefit shall be protected against insolvency should the following requirements be met: • The policy must be a life, disability, health or funeral policy • The policy must be effected by the insolvent on his/her own life or that of his/her spouse • The policy must have been in force for a minimum of 3 years prior to the date of insolvency • Qube Capital offers the following services: • Life Cover and Estate Planning • Investments – Recurring and Lump sum • Disability/Trauma/Severe Illness Benefits • Legal Services – Trust, Wills and Legal Agreements • Short Term Insurance – Personal and Commercial Policies. Article by: Lemanja Davidson Photos: Maruis van der Westhuizen Personal Trainer: Ine Weber Gym: Stellenbosch Virgin Active
“DO-ANYWHERE” 20 MINUTE CARDIO AND STRENGTH WORKOUT Winter is around the corner for South Africans, when most of us retreat to our hermit lifestyles; snoozing hours under a warm blanket in front of the television with the smell of home-made soup lingering in the air. Slumbering is the fact that winter food and the hermit lifestyle takes its toll on our weight and general health. Let’s face it, getting up at 5am in the morning to go and hit the gym is not part of the “to do list” for most of us during the winter.
Ine Weber introduces the
“do-anywhere” cardio and strength workout to accommodate those lazy mornings! Take this 20 minute workout outside, perform it in front of the Television or take a break from work at the office, close your door and focus on your health and fitness! “Prevention is better than cure”. Don’t let the laziness of the winter months get the better of your health, Keep fit and stay healthy!

NOTES/INTERESTING FACTS replace with a 10 minute outdoor run or cycle 1 minute on each side – don’t let your front knee overlap your toes, keep a straight back at all times Contract the leg muscles while pointing the toes to the side, move leg back to centre standing position with legs hip width apart, sink into a squad – swap sides without stopping, always return to the centre squad stand with your legs hip width apart, arms relaxing by your sides, jump into the air while bring your arms above your head in a sideward movement and your legs spread as wide as possible - forming a star with your arms and feet – jump back into the standing position Stand in front of a shin height object, touch the object with the toes of the front leg, bend the back leg slightly and keep a straight back. Contract all the muscles in the body, jump into the air and rotate the toes, move the arms as if running Position wrists directly under the shoulders, bring the elbows into the body, dip as low as possible and return to starting position Start in a push up position, jump the legs into the chest and hop into a low squat / sitting position with arms stretched out to the front. Lean into the plank and repeat the exercise Position the wrists directly under the shoulders, keep the arms straight and the core muscles contracted. Align the heels, buttocks, back and head. Align the wrist directly under the shoulder contract the muscles in the body, keep an aligned posture with the overhead stretched palm of the hand facing to the front (30 seconds on each side) Perform stretches that your body feels comfortable with. Keep it basic in the beginning and focus on correct body alignment, with time take the stretches deeper
When cycling on a spinning bike on your own or doing a spinning class keep this very important tip in mind. “Always press down with your heels when pedalling and not with your toes. In this foot position your legs are stronger when you are cycling up that steep hills and it will also prevent your calves from cramping.

SIDE LUNGES 1. Stand up straight, with your legs hip-width apart. Flex your abdominal muscles inward and upward. It is essential that you keep good spinal posture throughout the duration of the lunge. 2. Turn towards the side and step forward with your right foot approximately 0.6 to 0.9m away. Keep your back straight as your body moves forward.
3. Bend both of your knees at the same time. The aim is to make both of your knees stop at a 90 degree angle. Make sure your right knee does not go over your toe line. 4. Push off of your right heel to rise. Return your right leg to its starting position. 5. Repeat with the left leg.
SIDE TAP WITH SQUAT 1. Tap your right leg to the side, slightly bending the left leg. 2. Now bring the right leg back to the middle and do a narrow squat. Make sure that the toes are point-
ing directly forward. Push the buttocks all outwards, slightly bending the upper body forward and stabilizing the abs. The front of the knees will make an imaginary straight line with the toes that is perpendicular to the front. 3. Repeat on the left side.
FROGGER 1. Start with your hands directly in line with your shoulders (“hand plank position) 2. Keeping your back straight, jump inwards with your legs wide and your knees bent 90 degrees. 3. Jump forward until you are in an upright squat
position with your arms straightened in front of you at shoulder level. Remember: The front of the knees will make an imaginary straight line with the toes that is perpendicular to the front. 4. Put your hands on floor in front of you and jump outwards again to your starting position.

GHOST TOWN Kolmanskop NAMIBIA
Photos: Wimpie & Pierre Ackermann
Kolmanskop is Afrikaans for Coleman’s hill and in German- Kolmannskuppe. This ghost town in the Namibia desert situated in the southern part of Namibia is only a few kilometres from the port town of Lüderitz In 1908 a worker, Zacharias Lewala, found a diamond while working in this area. His supervisor realized the area was rich in diamonds and the news spread like wildfire. From 1884 to 1915, the German Empire ruled the area and it was known as German
South-West Africa.German miners settled in the area and soon afterwards the German government declared a large area as a “Sperrgebiet”. The Kolmannskuppe village was built in the architectural style of a German town. Driven by the enormous wealth out of diamond mining the village boasted a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, four lane skittle alley, theatre, sports hall, casino, ice factory and the first x-ray station in the southern hemisphere. Fresh meat could be pur-

chased at the butcher’s. There was also a bakery, furniture factory, a public playground and a swimming pool. At the time there was a railway line all the way to Luderitz. Kolmanskop reached its pinnacle in the 1920’s. The town started to declined when diamond prices crashed. In it’s heyday the town had approximately 300 German adults, 40 children and 800 contract workers. In spite of the isolation and bleakness of the surrounding desert, Kolmanskop developed

as a haven of German culture, offering entertainment and recreation for its wealthy inhabitants. Kolmanskop became abandoned by 1954. The diamonds in the area were exhausted, the wealth that once drove this luxurious desert town was gone. The desert sands are now reclaiming the town. Today the ghost town’s crumbling ruins bear little resemblance to its former glory. The stately homes have been nearly demolished by the wind, and are gradually becoming enveloped by encroaching sand dunes. In 1980, the mining company De Beers, restored a number of buildings, and established and interesting museum which has now become a tourist attraction. Many of the houses have several feet of sand inside them. The outside of many buildings are deteriorating but overall the ghost town is in good shape, having tours run through it for interested visitors. Tours are run by the NamDeb company and you need a permit to visit.

FINANCE
Land of
Opportunity By: Dewan van Wyk
South Africa is going places!
Unfortunately just not as fast as we would want. We will not crash or go to ruin, but we are not going to shoot the lights out either... How should we position ourselves with regard to the above? After the crash of 2008 we never really recovered. Our economy has never quite got going again. Property has been rather stagnant for the past 10 years except commercial property with regard to brilliant management by a listed company or 2 on the JSE. Gold doesn’t really glitter so much either. Our platinum mines are in trouble. And the parastatels... SAA, Eskom... need we say more? Government can promise all they want, but how are they supposed to deliver with an official unemployment rate in excess of 25%? The actual unemployment rate the so-called ‘extended definition’ is beyond 40%! Getting S.A.’s economic growth rate beyond 3% p.a. never mind over 6% (current estimates for 2015 is about at 2.4%) that we really need if we are to start making inroads into problems, will be a massive challenge! So what are we to do?
Educate and Employ Yourself!
Sounds simple, but not so easy, and yet there’s still a catch... you need to build assets for yourself! If you’ve got a job, fantastic! If you’re successful in business, even better! But if you don’t have either? Start working for yourself, but here’s the trick... don’t, DON’T raise your living standards! Start saving! And by that I don’t mean you should start living like
62
LOCUM LIFESTYLE
a pauper in order to save all you earn. But consider an amount that you can put to work for yourself on a monthly basis.
Stop spending ALL you earn
I am not suggesting that you put your money in the bank and get ahead on their measly interest. Invest! By saving/investing just R500 p.m. you can one day have a brighter future than you ever thought possible. Did you know that one of the first investors with Allan Gray, back in 1976, is a billionaire today. He might have started with R100 000, but if you do R1 000 p.m. for example, within 8 years, you would have saved R100 000. If you invested R100 000 into the Coronation Top 20 in October 2000 you would have R1 637 645 by December 2014. Just 3 years ago, shares in Aspen was at about R100 per share. Today it is worth R428 per share. With Capitec you would’ve doubled your money 3 TIMES over in just the past 5 years! That’s over 800%! There are fantastic investment opportunities out there. Get your savings to them and start building your wealth today! Now, to embark on your journey of creating your millions, you need to consider 3 very important aspects: 1.) You need to make sure you plan properly! You have specific financial needs that need to be met. You have specific risks that you need to be aware of and you only have a certain amount of time in which to go to work. This must all be compensated for in order to get to YOUR solution.
2.) You need the correct investments. This might be the tricky part but it is also the easy part. You don’t need to know anything yourself. Get a good financial planner who can assist you. You’ll have to fill in a few forms and pay a nominal fee for services rendered that will be deducted from your investment but in return you side step the very daunting task of trying to figure out for yourself what you need to do. 3.) You cannot afford to do stupid transactions, invest in silly deals and lose money. Always invest in a proper regulated investment environment. Did you know S.A. is among the top 3 nations in the world with regard to financial regulation? You remember 2008? The US needed to bail out their banks... our banks were fine! Our banks and our financial services industry are truly world class! And therein lies your opportunity... Cut back, create a surplus, start investing and get wealthy! There truly is NO limit! Consider your investment as your primary financial initiative. There is no bill or account as important as that. Pay yourself first every month, then take care of the rest and cut all the wasteful expenditure to fit within your budget. This way you live within your means and you start taking responsibility for your future. R500 p.m. is just 2 trips to your favourite restaurant (if not 1). Why eat up your own future? Start getting wealthy TODAY.
