The 84th Academy Awards, more known as Oscars took place in 26 of February at the Kodak Theatre (now Hollywood and Highland Center). It was for the ninth time hosted by Billy Cristal. In my opinion this year’s Oscars were very disappointing. The 6000 judges must like a lot white and black movies. In no world is “The Artist” better than War Horse, Hugo, Moneyball, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, ... In my opinion that movie must have brought a lot of childhood memories to the judges and it’s surely a good movie but it should never win five Oscars.

This year, “Hugo” had 11 nominations and “The Artist” 10. However, in the end both won only five oscars. “The Iron Lady” which only had 2 nominations, won two oscars. “Hugo” only received technical awards and “The Artist” won the most important oscars, such as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, ... ACADEMY AWARDS’ FUN FACTS: Sacha Baron Cohen, the actor from “Borat” and “Ali G” appeared dressed as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen, in order to promote his new film “Dictator”. 21 Jump 21 Jump Street is an action comedy starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. These two friendly faces did an excellent job in this movie. It was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and it has overcome the budget of 42 million dollars in over a hundred dollars. 21 Jump Street was a 1987 television series and it’s now in the big screen.
This is the story of Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum), who are two former classmates who meet again, when entering to the police academy. Morton was a nerd and Greg was a “dumb jock” that used to bully him. Like Morton is very good at theoretical tests and Greg at physical tests, they develop a friendship, in which

one helps the other. However, they are assigned to park patrols. And they still do not do things right. So, they are reassigned to a special division on 21 Jump Street. Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) explains them that this division consists in the infiltration high school teenagers, in order to stop the spreading of a synthetic drug. They go to school as undercover brothers and they have to solve this case, find the supplier of the drugs and stop him, while they act as ordinary teenagers. It’s a tough task, and the director made it look very funny and entertaining. They are forced to take the drugs, to “fake” a romantic interest and to go the prom. A very good action comedy to all the teens.

The Hunger
The Hunger Games is a science fiction action drama movie based on the best-selling young-adult novel by Suzanne Collins. It was directed by Gary Ross and it has been very well received by the critics and the audience. It had the third best opening weekend box office sales in the United States. The Box Office is currently, at the 420 millions, with only a budget of $78 millions. It was the biggest box office debut for a non-sequel movie. Both the story, which discussed key themes, like politics, feminism and religion, and Jennifer Lawrence’s performance were crucial to its success. This story happens in a post-apocalyptic nation called Panem, which consists in 12 poor districts and a very powerful Capitol. As a punishment by the Capitol, one boy and one girl with ages between 12 and 18 from each district are selected by an annual lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. The Capitol will train those kids to survive, because in that event they have to fight in an arena until one remains alive. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), 12 | Teen Movies | April 2012

The critical reception to this movie was very good. A lot of critics gave it four starts, but I think it deserves a four and a half starts, thanks to the performance of the actors. Based on 239 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 85% “Certified Fresh” rating and an average score of 7.2/10. The film earned an 80% score from “Top Critics”. The site’s consensus reads “Thrilling and superbly acted, The Hunger Games captures the dramatic violence, raw emotion, and ambitious scope of its source novel”. On Metacritic, the film has a 67 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable reviews”.
Taylor KitSch T “He was
truly ahead of his time.”
aylor Kitsch played John Carter in the movie with the same title, based in the sci-fi series of Edgar Rice Burroughs. He is also know for acting in Friday Night Lights and in the upcoming movie Battleship. He is now, a Hollywood Icon and here is his interview. Teen Movies: Edgar Rice Burroughs published the book “A Princess of Mars” in 1917, fifty years after the American Civil War. With the movie coming out nearly a hundred years later, what do you feel like it’s linking to in our contemporary world. Taylor Kitsch: “I think he was just so ahead of his time. And how applicable those books are now is uncanny. From racism to religion, it’s kind of scary that they’re still very prevalent now, those issues. And then of course war with all the revol utions going on, and us being engaged with 50 of them. I think it’s incredible. He was truly ahead of his time.”
TM: In this movie, stands out the stunt work, thanks to the gravity in Mars that changes John Carter. Can you talk about the physical training you had to do for the movie? TK: “A lot of sword training. I had a guy come into Austin while I was finishing the fourth season of ‘Friday Night Lights.’ Then it was just a diet regimen of an incredibly boring diet for eleven months. Four months before and seven during shooting. And then wire training. The whole shebang. And then, of course, the standard gym workouts to get to that certain aesthetic. It was more of a marathon, and that’s why it was so tough. To do it for that long takes a lot out of you. And plus, shooting six day weeks, and being in arguably every scene of the film, it took a lot to sustain it. That was the toughest part.”
“... Shooting six day weeks, and being in arguably every scene of the film, it took a lot to sustain it. That was the toughest part.” TM: And how did you actually do those Marcian jumps? TK: “We were on some dry lake bed in the middle of nowhere in Utah. We had two cranes about maybe 500 feet apart. I was doing 60-foot jumps on that wire. No one knows this story either. But Stanton and I were living at base camp, on this dry lake bed. The rest of the crew wasn’t. It’s like, “Oh f***, man—this sounds like a sweet idea. When else would you ever get to do that?” Oh my God, big mistake, man. Huge mistake.”
TM: Why? TK: “Well, there’s nice trailers: a 40-inch TV in your trailer, a bed, a full shower. You’re like, “F*** man, I’m living the dream.” And once you get wrapped, you’re home... One night, I’m not upset, but the shower is basically pissing on you and it’s ice cold. You’re like, “Whatever, I’m just going to throw in a movie.” No electricity. And you’re on this lake bed, so there’s nothing really stopping the wind. 80-mile-an-hour winds. In the dark. What are you going to do? I had a cold one. Then there’s this screaming wind and I’m bracing myself because it feels like the whole trailer is going to be chucked up in the air: Oh my god, oh my god. Then I go to the middle of the trailer because I think maybe that’s the safest spot and I end up sleeping on the couch, maybe an hour, tops. The next morning, Stanton looks terrible too. We had the exact same experience...”

TM: You have a couple of intensely emotional scenes, when John Carter flashbacks to the lost of his family during the Civil War. Can you talk what it was like to shoot those? TK: “I go back to it being such a marathon. That was one of the toughest days I’ve ever had as an actor. If I’m working on ‘Friday Night Lights,’ or even Kev Carter (in ‘The Bang Bang Club’) who was a suicidal drug addicted photo journalist, I go to rehearsal and I do two takes and I’m done for the day. You can do it in forty minutes, if that. And with Carter, it was like we got to do this whole flashback in one day, so for twelve hours you’re in that state of mind. So that was something that was really tough. And then just the importance of it. If those things don’t float, if they don’t work in the movie, the movie is just another movie, you know? And that’s everything to me. I wanted to latch in and take you guys through that. More than anything, the most important thing for me was to do those scenes.”
“...with Carter, it was like we got to this whole flashback in one day, so for twelve hours you’re in that state of mind.”
TM: You probably want to do a variety of characters, film and genres. Are you contractually obligated to do sequels for “John Carter” or “Battleship”? TK: “I am. I’ve signed on for three for both.”
16 | Teen Movies | April 2012
TM: You are such a good actor and yet, you’ve nearly went pro as a hockey player, right? TK: “I did. I played pretty darn competitive-level hockey. Then the good old knee injury. Obviously, it’s a blessing in disguise, but growing up Canadian, that’s our religion, that’s our football. I’m a small-town Canadian cat, so I could relate to Riggs quickly and easily.” TM: You year must have been crazy. Having three leading roles in all high-profile movies, right? TK: “2012 is really make-or-break, isn’t it? I mean I’ve got John Carter and then I got Battleship, and then we end with a true bang in Savages with Oliver Stone. What are you gonna say? I mean, if Oliver Stone calls you, you’re going to f***ing go. Pete Berg calls you, you should go. Andrew Stanton asks me to be an extra in this Indie he’s doing?”
TM: Andrew Stanton made Wall-e, which was amazing, but working with actors is completely different. TK: “But he has though! He’s working with f***ing Tom Hanks! When I met him, he really just let me go, and trusted me to do my own thing. Then I walk into his London office and there are 12 by 10 cue cards all the way around the top of his office outlining the emotional arc of John Carter. I’m like, ‘Why the f*** did I do any homework?’ This guy had every moment right there on his wall.” TM: What homework? TK: “I really focused on the loss of John Carter’s family. I sat down with these historians in Texas about the Civil War because John comes from there. Then I read a ton of books, a lot of letters of former soldiers that would write back home. Brutal. It just taught me a lot. Even the way he fights... He’s so raw emotionally, I want him to be emotionally intense when he’s fighting.” TM: You and director Peter Berg are back together for Battleship. Did he let you improvise on that set? TK: “Pete was beyond collaborative. He’d send me stuff and say, “I want you to tear this apart so hard. I want you to come down on this scene as hard as you can: Just rip it in half. Just whatever you think is wrong with it, change it. If you hate it, tell me.”... I pissed him off by challenging him. On Battleship, I’d be arguing over the story. The funny thing is, he taught us that. He’s the one that said, “Push the boundaries. Challenge the director. Challenge the writers. You yourself know these characters more than anyone. Stand your ground.” On Battleship, he had this moment where he’s like, “I almost f***ing regret teaching you that. Just do it, will you?” We both just died
laughing.”

John Carter is a fantasy action movie, based in the science fiction series of Edgar Rice Burroughs. This is movie is the first adventure of John Carter and it was directed Andrew Stanton. The critics had opposite opinions and the box office wasn’t the expected, only overcoming $10 millions in the budget of $250 millions. It’s a good science fiction movie, with a lot of stunts and visual effects. Mars is dying and it has become a dry and hostile planet, inhabited with warring civilizations, fighting to survive. In 1868, John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) in order to hide from the Cavalry and Apache Indians, he shelters in a cave. A Martian suddenly materializes and John Carter instantly kills him. This movie divided the crowds and the critics. A lot of critics gave it three starts, but my opinion it’s a 4 star Disney Movie. It is a great entertaining with a lot of action scenes to all the family. It holds a 51% rating on the film-critics aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes based on 201 reviews, which the general consensus is “While John Carter looks terrific and delivers its share of pulpy thrills, it also suffers from uneven pacing and occasionally incomprehensible plotting and characterization.” On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 53%, signifying “Mixed or average reviews”.

WRATH of the TITANS Wrath of the Titans is a greek mythology action movie and a sequel to the 2010 movie Clash of the Titans. It was directed by Jonathan Liebesman and a lot of people liked it. However I and some critics didn’t. It’s a great action movie, but I think the story could be more interesting. Greek Mythology is a great background to any movie and it can be used in a lot of different ways. I think that they could use it better. The Box office haven’t already cover the budget of $150 millions. It’s a movie with a lot of great effects.
Zeus, Hades, Podeison, Ares, Hepahestus, Kronos < Perseus 20 | Teen Movies | April 2012
This movie has received unfavorable reviews from film critics. In my opinion, it deserves three stars, because I love the greek mythology. However, some critics gave it one and two stars. Metacritic assigned the film an average score of 37/100. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 25% approval rating with an average rating of 4.5/10, based on an aggregation of 123 reviews and offers the consensus; “Its 3D effects are an improvement over its predecessor’s, but in nearly every other respect, Wrath of the Titans fails to improve upon the stilted acting, wooden dialogue, and chaosdriven plot of the franchise’s first installment”.
Ten years after the first movie, Perseus (Sam Worthington), the demi-god son of Zeus (Liam Neeson) has a normal life but he is called to save the world, again. The lack of devotion from humans, made Gods lose their powers and Titans are getting away from the prison of Tartarus. Hades, Ares and their army attacked Poseidon and Zeus, stealing his thunderbolt in order to revive their father, Kronos. Zeus’s thunderbolt, Hades’s pitchfork and Poseidon’s trident, together can kill Kronos. Perseus with the army of Andromeda, the trident of Poseidon and his son Agenor, Hephaestus and Pegasus, will rescue Zeus from Tartarus, kill Kronos and save the world, again.

The Raid: Redemption is an Indonesian Martial Arts action movie, written and directed by Gareth Evans. Even though the language of the movie is Indonesian, people liked it a lot, claiming even that it was the best action movie in decades. The critics appreciated it very much. However, its box office was very low, comparing to big hollywood movies, grossing only a little bit more than one million dollars. It has already won a lot of film festivals like the one in Toronto.
