Looking back at 2008 Third year of Paint the town Purple Paint the Town Purple By Kathy Wyrick Vice President of Marketing Conway Area Chamber of Commerce
P
aint the Town Purple was a huge success last year, due to the support of the business community. We continue to appreciate the enthusiasm and creativity shown by so many in Conway.
Inside: Coloring page for contest.
Page 8 During the week of Paint the Town Purple 2008, a coloring contest was held to involve the kindergartners. Approximately 1000 Paint the Town Purple coloring sheets were colored, and four winners were chosen. The top four winners were: Jennifer Noel of Conway Christian, Jacob Bailey of St. Joseph Primary, Kamiah Turner of Sallie Cone
and Katie Baker of Woodrow Cummins. The University of Central Arkansas mascot, as well as representatives from the Paint the Town Purple committee and UCA, visited each of the four schools. Throughout the week, businesses throughout Conway decorated and celebrated Paint the Town Purple Week. From purple swimming pools to painted purple walls in businesses, there was no doubt that Conway was showing support of the local University’s football team. Winning businesses in the Decorating Contest were as follows: Best Overall – Pediatrics Plus, Best Decorating – Arkansas Federal Credit Union and First State Bank, Best Spirit – About You Color Salon. A video highlighting the week was shown during halftime at the homecoming game. UCA won the 2008 game, so it was a perfect ending for the week.
Paint the Town Purple 2009 is very exciting, fresh and renewed. Can you believe we are in the midst of Year 3 for Conway’s PTTP? The Conway businesses are decorating their businesses and storefronts this year more than ever. We are not only building on the last two years’ success but watching the community unite together to support the Bears. As you drive through Conway and see the town literally painted in purple you can actually feel the excitement in the air. One of the pieces to PTTP is our Coloring Contest, and it is also one of the most rewarding when we see our children being involved and being a part of PTTP. With over 1,000 kindergarteners participating in the coloring contest of the UCA Bear, they are anxiously awaiting the results. The PTTP coloring contest committee will announce a first-, secondand third-place winner, along
with the Chairman’s Choice. The winners are visited by University of Central Arkansas’ most popular celebrity, “Victor E Bear.” Let the fun begin with our UCA homecoming week of festivities. We encourage everyone to come out to the pep rally, as it is truly a family event that you will not want to miss. Let’s all come out and support the Bears at this year’s homecoming game on Oct 24. Also, new for this year is the “We Got Spirit” Pep Rally at 6 a.m. Oct. 23. KATV’s Jessica Dean will be live at UCA. Show your support for the Bears and attend! I would like to extend a special thank you to the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce, Conway Advertising and Promotion Commission, participating Conway businesses and all of the Conway Schools for participating in this year’s PTTP. I am extremely honored and very proud to be a part of Conway’s Chamber of Com-

As it nears the midway point, the 2009 season has been unique in 101 years of football for the University of Central Arkansas Bears. The Bears opened the season in Hawaii, achieved a benchmark victory over an upper-level opponent, played teams from five different states, played four of their first five games in different states and achieved one of their highest national rankings in NCAA Football Championship Division. In the process, UCA again established itself as one of the top teams in the Southland Conference. The season began in exotic fashion in Hawaii, where the Bears opened against the University of Hawaii, a member of the Western Athletic Conference. It was the first game outside the continental United States by a UCA football team. The game was arranged in part as a reward, and opening “bowl game” for the 23 UCA seniors, who were ineligible for postseason play throughout their careers because of the NCAA transition. UCA jumped to a 14-3 lead, led most of the game before yielding a long pass and a late touchdown to lose 25-20 at
Aloha Stadium. The Bears left Hawaii disappointed. “It’s about winning,” said UCA coach Clint Conque. “We work so dadgummed hard, and we get that close. You’d almost rather get beat by 6010 than get that close and lose the game.” After an open playing date, the Bears traveled to Bowling Green, Ky., to take on their second straight NCAA Football Bowl Division opponent in Western Kentucky, one of the newest FBS members that plays in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bears dominated from beginning to end and took a benchmark, dominating 287 victory, the program’s first victory over an FBS opponent in five tries. “The seniors have a legacy,” Conque said after the game. “Fans need to save those tickets. There’s only one first time.” At a high, the Bears took a downswing in two home victories over NCAA Division II opponents, Glenville State of West Virginia and Missouri S&T (formerly Missouri-Rolla). The Bears defeated Glenville State 24-10 and Missouri S&T 45-10. UCA was never in danger

of losing either game against lowerlevel opponents but started slowly and struggled at times in both. Each opponents milked the play clock and tried to shorten the game, frustrating the UCA offense. “After playing two straight FBS teams, it was a challenge to motivate the team,” Conque said. The Bears regained their passion in their Southland Conference opener, thumping Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., 34-0, totally dominating the winless Demons and recording UCA’s first road shutout since 1988. UCA had four players score their first touchdowns, including transfer Jackie Hinton Jr. on his first carry since being activated. “Our defense gave up only one play over 20 yards,” Conque said. “We had zero turnovers, zero sacks and zero lostyardage plays. When you get that and play with the passion and intensity that we did, you have a chance to win. During the week, you could tell the players had a new sense of urgency.” After that victory, the Bears shot to No. 1 in one FCS poll. As it neared the midpoint, the Bears had already answered some preseason questions. • The defense was as good, as deep and as potentially dominating as advertising, leading the nation in

after a knee injury on the first day of practice. “There’s a lot of football left,” Conque said. “The Southland Conference is a tough, balanced conference and it’s a battle every time out. Nobody is measuring anybody for rings just yet.” But a campaign that began near a bench had already reached some peaks by midseason.
