A note from the editor M e h a k S r i va s tava When I first began writing for Logistics News Middle East, I was a novice. I had no idea of the vastness and potential that this industry— and writing about it—carried. But the deeper I delved into the work and projects underway and in the pipeline, the more I realised how this industry was at the heart of all surrounding sectors, be it construction or healthcare or even waste management. As my understanding of the industry itself bettered, I felt more confident writing stories for the magazine. It helped that the experts I dealt with were more than happy to explain their line of work, and most of all, they loved what they were doing. I recall interviewing a few executives who spoke of the industry as a poet would discuss his poetry. They enjoyed their work, no matter how daunting the industry might look to an outsider. That left a lasting impression on me, long after I’d finished working on the feature. This month’s issue is a culmination of the work that I’ve put into the magazine over the past year. While LNME has grown in strength year after year, I have witnessed an

exceptional response to this product in the 2017-2018 period. Proof of this emerged when we held the inaugural Logistics & Transport Awards last month. In attendance were top officials from eminent companies like Abu Dhabi Ports, FedEx, Agility and King Abdullah Port. Their presence indicates that we’ve done something right, that we’ve managed to reach out to them in a way that has impressed them. I couldn’t be prouder of the success we’ve achieved. I thank them for taking out time from their busy schedules, to join us for an evening of celebrating their triumphs. This issue happens to be my final one with the magazine. I thank my mentor, Paromita Dey, and all the others at BNC for helping me grow as a writer and journalist over the past year. It’s been an insightful journey and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead in the future for both me and this very promising product. Signing off! Mehak Srivastava Reporter

Gulftainer hosts sister port agreement signing between major entities Gulftainer, the world’s largest privately-owned independent port operator and logistics company based in the UAE, hosted the signing of a sister port agreement between the Department of Seaports & Customs of the Government of Sharjah and the Diamond State Port Corporation (DSPC), a corporate entity of the State of Delaware, USA. Under the terms of the partnership, the two entities are mandated to cooperate in the development of international trade and logistics, exchange information, and build mutually beneficial commercial, technological and cultural synergies. The agreement also enables private companies within the catchment area of the respective port authorities to collaborate on trade and investment prospects. The signing took place following the official handover of the Delawarebased Port of Wilmington from the Diamond State Port Corporation to Gulftainer to operate and develop the port over a 50-year concession period. Gulftainer plans to invest USD580mn in developing the cargo terminal capabilities of the Port of Wilmington to enhance its overall productivity. The company’s remit includes the construction of a new 1.2 million TEU container facility worth approximately
USD410mn at DuPont’s former Edgemoor site that Diamond State Port Corporation acquired in 2016. This landmark deal represents the largest investment ever by a private UAE company in the USA. HE Sheikh Khaled bin Abdullah bin Sultan Al Qasimi, chairman of the Department of Seaports & Customs, Sharjah Airport International Free Zone and Hamriyah Free Zone Authority, and Jeffrey Bullock, Secretary of State of Delaware, signed the agreement at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce. Peter Richards, Group CEO of Gulftainer, and

senior leadership from the Gulftainer group attended the ceremony. Badr Jafar, chairman of Gulftainer’s Executive Board, said: “In line with Gulftainer’s commitment to generating cross-border socio-economic impact across the globe, this sister-port agreement facilitates strategic trade and knowledge exchange between the UAE and the USA, and further boosts bilateral relations between our countries.” Jeffrey Bullock said: “The agreement is a highly significant step in boosting economic ties between the UAE and the USA. We see this as a great opportunity to
bolster the overall economy of Delaware through productive partnerships and the sharing of industry best practices.” For his part, Peter Richards said: “Gulftainer is proud to be part of this historical moment for the UAE-US trade alliance. The strengthening of diplomatic relations between our two nations has set the stage for promising business opportunities in the years ahead.” Gulftainer will also establish an onsite training centre for the ports and logistics industries that is expected to train up to 1,000 people every year once it reaches full capacity. www.cbnme.com
Building the UAE’s highest road Jebel Jais is part of the Hajar Mountain Range in Ras Al Khaimah. It is the highest peak in the UAE. And for centuries unreachable by most. For 8 years, a fleet of Volvo FMX Trucks carried a total of more than 5.5 million cubic meters around the clock building a 36 km road that goes up more than 1910 meters. The rugged terrain, steep slopes and loose rock were not a challenge for Volvo FMX, which is built tough for such conditions. That is why more than 30 of our Volvo FMX trucks completed this ambitious road project without any major breakdown. To watch the full video please visit www.volvotrucks.ae/jebeljais

Agility’s carbon measurement tool certified by Carbon Trust The Carbon Trust, an independent expert in sustainable strategies and technologies, has validated the methodology and processes that Agility uses to generate carbon footprint reports for logistics customers. The Carbon Trust’s assurance allows Agility to demonstrate that its carbon reporting methodology and processes comply with the organization’s reporting guidance for transparency and accuracy. To receive assurance, Agility developed a methodology to ensure the accurate monitoring, quantifying and reporting of CO2 emissions data from the movement of customer cargo. This methodology was audited extensively and approved by the Carbon Trust, and it has now been incorporated into Agility’s carbon reporting processes. Agility has been providing free carbon footprint reports to customers since 2009, enabling them to track and reduce the amount of CO2 emissions created in their supply chains. With the Carbon Trust assurance, Agility’s customers can now use the free CO2 reports to offset emissions resulting from the transportation of their shipments. This information is also available to small and medium-sized logistics customers (SMEs) using Shipa Freight, the online freight service powered by Agility. Shipa Freight customers will get free CO2 emissions estimates for their shipments when they receive quotes and invoices.

Scania Middle East’s managing director, Özcan Barmoro, outlines how the global company plans to fulfil its ambition to create a world of mobility that is better for business, society and the environment
Time to act T
he transportation sector in Gulf region is going through rapid changes. More attention is paid to fuel efficiency and total operating economy, which is achieved based on an optimised customer specification. All countries in the Gulf have started to implement programs with focus on establishing a strong economic development with less dependency on oil and gas. New visionary programs trigged an active response from many countries to shift their energy demand into more environmental-friendly options. Saudi has kick-started the Vision 2030 program, the UAE has been implementing Vision 2021, and other countries follow these examples. These new government programs will certainly increase demands on project efficiency, as well as requirements for lower impact on infrastructure and environment. Scania believes that innovation, profitability, and sustainability can, and should, go hand in hand. Demand for sustainable transport solutions is increasing, not only from our customers, but also from their customers– the buyers of transport services. The world can’t wait for a “one size fits all” solution; the conditions and issues vary so much from place to place that there is no silver bullet. On the contrary, fossil-free, sustainable options should not be considered to be in competition with each other– all of them are better for our climate than the fossil fuels we have now. Huge potential We base our approach to sustainable transport on the three pillars of energy efficiency, alternative fuels and electrification, and smart and safe transport. The potential when combining these three pillars is huge. Increasingly energyefficient combustion engines will continue to play a role in the transport system of the fu-

ture, running on fossil-free fuels or combined with an electric powertrain. Vehicle electrification is developing quickly and with its environmental, social, and cost benefits, it will play a fundamental role going forward. We are working full speed ahead on electrification with industry partners to solve infrastructure and battery capability issues for the technology to fulfill the business requirements of heavy bus and truck customers. When optimising these transport and mobility flows in a smart way,
using digitalisation and automation, we continue to reduce waste in the transport system. Our aim is that wherever in the world our customers go to buy a Scania solution, they should be offered an alternative to a fossil-fuel vehicle. We are committed to making sustainable solutions our standard offer, and fossil-fuelled engines the alternative. Redefining Scania If 2017 has shown that the move to sustainable

transport is gathering pace and the market is responding, we still need to do much more to offset the impact of greenhouse gas emissions because even as the technology advances, so does global warming. We believe that businesses that are not part of developing solutions to the sustainability challenges of our time will struggle to survive. For us, the question is not whether a future of sustainable transport will come, but when. It is towards this future that we are working in close cooperation with our customers and customers’ customers. Partnership is crucial in accelerating change. Besides the synergies that lie in sharing certain research and development within Volkswagen Truck & Bus (now newly named as TRATON Group), Scania is collaborating with a range of players within the ecosystem of transport and logistics, creating clusters of teams with key players, such as fuel and technology suppliers. Partnership equals leadership in the shift towards a sustainable transport system. Fulfilling our vision The transportation industry must adopt rapid and immediate change in order to contribute substantially to achieving global goals and realising a fossil-free world by 2050 (Paris Agreement). We are more determined than ever to fulfil our vision of driving the shift towards a clean, safe, and reliable transport system. To make this shift happen, we are challenging ourselves, our customers, their customers, policy-makers, and academia. We are developing our people by respecting and integrating the diversity that makes us who we are. We keep improving our profitability, reinvesting our resources in the people, services and solutions that improve our customers’ profitability, today and tomorrow. I believe the true meaning of corporate responsibility is to take a 360-degree perspective of the world and assume the added layer of responsibility of a global citizen and leader. We have decided to take the lead in the shift towards a sustainable future of transport and logistics, and we stand by it. It’s time to act, and we urge others to join us. Scania’s three-pillar approach Recognising that there is no single, standalone solution to the issues affecting global transport, Scania has adopted a holistic three-pillar approach to driving the shift towards a sustainable system. The focus is on energy efficiency, alternative fuels and electrification, and smart and safe transport, all of which – individually or combined – will help to bring about that shift.
“Our aim is that wherever in the world our customers go to buy a Scania solution, they should be offered an alternative to a fossil-fuel vehicle.” Energy efficiency Providing the most efficient technology in combination with first-class services is the core of Scania’s offering. In order to provide customers with energy-efficient products and solutions, the company maintains three focus areas: powertrain performance, vehicle optimisation, and fuel consumption. Alternative fuels and electrification Alternative fuels can be applied separately or in combination with electrification in Scania’s solutions. Providing the greatest variety of engines for alternative fuels on the market, Scania has also focused its ef-
forts on electrification technologies for vehicles and infrastructure alike. Smart and safe transport Connectivity is a key enabler, allowing more efficient logistical flows and greater filling rates. Safety can also be significantly enhanced through digitalisation and automation – when applied in driver assistance technologies, for instance. We, at Scania, are focused on delivering energy efficiency, alternative fuels and electrification, as well as smart and safe transport. All of these elements must work in parallel with one another in order to create a truly sustainable transport system.

Preventable downturns Kushal Nahata, CEO and co-founder, FarEye, discusses losses incurred due to improper cold storage in supply chains

T
he global cold chain market size is valued at USD147.55bn in 2018 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 15% from 2018 to 2025. Growing penetration of connected devices and automation of refrigerated warehouses across the globe are anticipated to spur industry growth over the forecast period. The increased number of organised retail stores in the emerging economies are demanding more solutions for cold chain. Across the globe, products are stored and shipped at improper temperatures and are delivered past their shelf lives which leads to a humongous loss of billions of dollars. It has been estimated that 30% of global food production is wasted annually; food loss represents a significant challenge to closing the food gap for the global population. In developing and middle-income countries, food loss is often highest at the production and distribution level where the lack of infrastructure poses threats to safe food storage. On top of warehousing and storage solutions there is a need to quality assurance product protection services that mitigate spoilage. “Temperature True” options for temperaturesensitive air and ocean freight, all with proactive monitoring and intervention services are one of the solutions to diminish wastage and losses incurred in the industry. The term “cold chain” for uninterrupted refrigeration has given way to “temperature-controlled”. Many products also react to humidity, light, vibration, and shocks. A potential solution, or at least partial solution to reduce post-harvest loss, is the introduction of a temperature-controlled supply chain. A cold chain for perishable foods is the uninterrupted handling of the product within a low-temperature environment during the postharvest steps of the value chain including harvest, collection, packing, processing, storage, transport, and marketing until it reaches the final consumer. An integrated cold chain encompasses the management of the movement of perishable food products from the field, ranch or body of water through the entire postharvest chain to the final consumer. Cold chain logistics is the planning and management of the interactions and transitions between these five segments, in order to keep foods at their optimum temperature for maintenance of quality, food safety, and prevention of waste and economic losses. Speed is often the key to success when handling and marketing perishable foods using a cold supply chain. The cold chain is a well-known method for
reducing food losses and food waste and has long been so. The required infrastructure and investments in necessary facilities, equipment, and management skills, however, are generally lacking in developing countries. There has been reasonable growth in cold chain infrastructure in Morocco, Egypt, and lately in Libya, but in all developing countries there is still major room for growth and much great efforts to improve capacity training to form better technicians and to improve applications. Hence, logistics play a key role in synchronising the cold storage in supply chain processes across the world. Proper utilisation of technology and SaaS platforms can reduce food wastage to huge extends. Startups across the globe are coming up with Arti-
ficial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning enabled technology that can solve the issue of food storage during the transportation process. Also, Internet of Things (IoT) is modifying the efficiency of long-distance perishable and food supply chains. The use of cold is not a cure-all or a onesize-fits-all proposition but is an important component of an agricultural handling system or value chain in its entirety. Each type of fresh produce and/or food product has a specific and limited storage potential related to its physiological nature and lowest safe storage temperature, and the use of the cold chain can help reach this potential and reduce perishable food losses.

of more than 1,000 culturally diverse, passionate and experienced professionals. Our operations worldwide are supported by a well-established distribution and logistics department, with the most advanced computerised stock monitoring systems and large warehousing facilities across the UAE which contain over 2.32ha of dry and cold storage areas. Are Truebell’s operations based only in the UAE? At present, we have two warehousing facili-
ties in Sharjah, three in Dubai (Dubai Investment Park), and three in Umm Al Quwain. All warehouses possess dry, ambient, chiller and cold storage facilities. In terms of bonded warehouses in seaports, we have two in Ajman, three in Umm Quwain, and multiple others in Fujairah. Our head office resides in Sharjah, with further offices located in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Fujairah. Truebell’s group companies are established in the UK, Kuwait, India, Sri Lanka, and West Africa.

What were Truebell’s operational milestones like in 2017? The 2017-2018 marked an important milestone for Truebell for several reasons. We implemented SAP across our corporate departments. We also set up new operations in both India and Sri Lanka. Besides that, we signed a partnership with Unilever for Duty Free India. Furthermore, we acquired exclusive distribution rights for LVMH portfolio in Sri Lanka. We also opened a new state-of-the-art distribution centre in Dubai Industrial Park (DIP), with full operations set to begin in October. Who are some of Truebell’s regular and/or recent clients? Spinneys and Virgin Megastores recently signed deals with the company to supply premium household goods from KitchenCraft, a UK-based kitchen supply expert. As part of the new contracts with Spinneys and Virgin Megastores, Truebell will initially supply a range of kitchenware from an extensive range, including products as diverse as bakeware and thermometers to espresso cups and cutters. Plans are already afoot to increase the brand range with new announcements expected in the near future. Other clients include Dubai Duty Free, Marriott Group, Hilton, Jumeirah Group, Carrefour, Maritime and Mercantile International (MMI), African & Eastern, and Barracuda Beach Resort. What does sustainability mean to Truebell? How is this incorporated in their business style? Sustainability to us is efficient and reliable operations with reduced carbon footprint that can be achieved by the appropriate use of environment-friendly machinery, materials, and other resources, as well as with a well-planned waste management and recycling system. Sustainability has always played an important role in our operations, with our focus in previous years to improve sustainability through efficient waste management systems, route optimisation in logistics, and optimisation of warehouse processes and operations. In recent years, we felt the rising need for a sustainability-driven operation and our new distribution center is our first major step towards realising this vision. The facility is equipped with storage solutions and efficient machinery that operate on reduced carbon footprint and protect the health and efficiency of both men and machines alike.
better insulation but increases our efficiency. • MHEs – This is the first time, man-up order pickers with a 1.2m lift height have been used in a distribution centre in this part of the world. Similarly, it is the first time, insulated cabin VNA reach trucks have been used. This type of equipment helps ensure optimum productivity by facilitating nonstop operations in the freezer department. • Check-out counters for dispatch – All deliveries will be made through touch screen check-out counters – again another first in the industry. Items will be scanned to confirm propriety, quantity, and shelf life. Orders are pre-packed and barcoded to ensure delivery accuracy.
Truebell’s latest DC in Dubai Industrial Park is said to be ‘the first of its kind’. What makes it different from other facilities by Truebell, and even those by competitors? Meticulously planned to have the highest efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint for an operation of this magnitude, the new distribution centre comprises various stand-out features which contribute to it being the first of its kind in the region. These include: • Storage solution – The main storage solution features aisles with a width (pallet to pallet) of 1,660m. The aisle width is the narrowest in the world and requires high levels of precision to operate. • High-speed doors – These doors are controlled through machine sensitive sensors with separate doors for man entry. The highspeed doors used for the freezer department are made of panels. This again is a first for the region and not only helps us to ensure
Further notable features are as follows: • Flooring – The warehouse features smooth flooring which has been laid as per the rack layout with no joints in the aisles. This ensures longevity of the MHEs and minimal interruptions in operations due to a faulty floor design. • Racking – The racking has been built using SS540 grade steel and galvanised uprights. This design helps ensure we have the best specifications for the food industry. • Lighting – Fitted with LED lighting to conserve energy, a minimum lux level of 350 is maintained across the entire facility. Tailor-made luminaires in the aisles ensure light is not spilled over to the racks and is evenly spread. During the day ample sunlight is available using sky lights. With all the above resources and processes, the warehouse will possess maximum efficiency in terms of inventory accuracy, delivery accuracy, housekeeping and resource utilisation.
