WINDOWS 8.1 TIPS AND TRICKS Windows 8.1 is vastly different from any previous version of Microsoft Windows, both in appearance and functionality. Getting up to speed with Windows 8.1 does, therefore, present certain challenges that can test one's patience and even commitment to this version of the operating system. TIP 1: CHOOSING YOUR START UP ENVIRONMENT  User

should go to the start screen and click the start screen button or press the Windows logo key on keyboard.  By going down to the task bar in desktop environment, right-click and select Properties from the pop-up menu.  Next in the Taskbar and Navigation Properties window, user will click the Navigation tab and go to the start screen section.  User can turn this option off, if you don't like it, but there are other options to select from i.e.  Show my desktop background on start.  Show start on the display that you're using when you press the Windows logo key.  When user press it on the keyboard, they will be taken to the start screen.  When you do make a change make sure to click Apply and click OK to save those changes.


TIP 2: SHOWING APPS INSTEAD OF TILES  2.1

When user is on Desktop screen of the computer, go to taskbar and right click, select Properties. Select the Navigation Tab from the Taskbar Properties and Navigation Window.

There is a check box that will allow user to show the apps view automatically when user will go to start.

Check the box and click Apply and Press OK.


TIP 3: PINNING E-MAIL FOLDER TO START SCREEN  3.1

Click the Start button and go to your Mail application for example, Microsoft outlook mail

Select Folders from the side bar and right click on Evernote option on the screen.

A pop-up menu will display at the bottom of the screen.

Select pin to start by right clicking on the pop up

Now when user click the start button again, user will find the Microsoft app in your application list.


TIP 4: USING CLASSIC SHELL’S START BUTTON  Some

new users of Windows 8.1 find it difficult to find Start button and other applications because they are used to work on classic version i.e Windows XP. Windows 8.1 enhanced the look and feel of their new OS but for few users its still a struggle to deal with. For these users we can follow the steps and can change the look and feel of Windows 8.1 to Classic XP by following the steps below:

To use the classic version in your Start menu, go to Internet Explorer and type ClassicShell.net.

Download the Classic Shell to your PC and Run the Installation process.

 4.3

User can select the different options from Setup Window to download like Classic Windows explorer, Startup menu, Classic IE and Shell updates.

Select Next button and complete the Installation. Click Finish and close all other windows.

At the Start screen user can find the classic Start screen.


TIP 5: DISABLING CHARMS AND HOT SCREEN BUTTONS  5.1

Click the start button on the bottom left corner of the Windows screen.

Type in the search box PC Settings, it will display few options to choose from. Select PC Settings and select PC and Devices from the options provided.

 5.3

Select Corners and Edges option from the left pane options provided.

 5.4

On the right screen under App Switching choose the options to on or off the settings of different corners and edges accordingly.

 5.5

In the end, close the window and on the start screen check the corners and edges for the changes applied.
