CHRISTIAN LIVING
Big Christmas
I
am laughing to myself these days when I see the stores filling up with Christmas decorations in the middle of October. Grocery stores have started selling eggnog, and even the building supply store has removed all the gardening supplies to make way for lights and Christmas trees. We haven’t even had Thanksgiving yet! In fact, it was still weeks from Halloween when the colors of Christmas nudged out the tawny colors of fall. I love this! This is such a joy to me! Why? Because the world simply cannot contain Christmas. Nor can it confine Christmas to one simple day or one simple month. Not even two months. Christmas requires far, far more than that. But you might argue that the stores are just being commercial. Well, that’s certainly what they think they are being. But you and I know that it’s impossible
Death by Living N.D. Wilson, $19.99 | I-124 In this award-winning book, bestselling author N.D. Wilson reminds each of us that to truly live we must recognize that we are dying. In the meantime, we are all authors, creators of our own pasts, of the books that will be our lives. We stand in the now. God says create. Live. Choose. Shape the past. Etch your life in stone, and what you make will be forever. A poetic portrait of faith, futility, and the joy of this mortal life.

to keep Christmas from bursting out months before the arrival of the actual day. It’s just way too big for that. And let’s be honest here. If we limit ourselves to the few weeks of Advent, we simply wouldn’t have time to do all the singing and baking and buying and wrapping and shopping and celebrating we want to do. October is the perfect time to begin the Great Preparation for the Greatest Feast. It’s official. Let us all get started. And make a point to laugh as you fix and fit and furnish Christmas for your people. Enjoy the glory of all the proceedings and preparations for the Day. And may we offer it all to the One who is “the brightness of His glory” (Hebrews 1:3). Now I realize you may be reading this in a catalog in December. If that’s the case, you can just start gearing up now for next October!
How to Be Free from Bitterness Jim Wilson, $12.00 | E-104 Bitterness often grows out of a small offense—a passing word, an accidental shove, a pair of dirty socks left in the middle of the floor. But when it takes root in our hearts, its effects are anything but small. In this collection of short articles, Jim Wilson and others discuss what it means to live as imitators of God. They remind us that we are to forgive others just as we have been forgiven, pointing to Scriptural admonitions and examples as they offer sound teaching on the trials and temptations of everyday life.

The Silver Lining Nancy Wilson $15.00 | G-116 “The silver-haired is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness” (Proverbs 16:31). The Christian life is a journey, and mature Christian women are still traveling the way of righteousness and still growing in wisdom and holiness, in courage and love, and in joy over all. At last...a book for grandmas (and ladies who are looking forward to that stage in their lives). Nancy Wilson, herself a grandmother for going on twenty years, has lots of wisdom to share with those who are further along the road and eager to make the most of their travels. As a Christian woman encounters new milestones—becoming the mother of adult children, a mother-in-law, and a grandmother— her core identity in Christ never changes. Her nest may be empty, but He always fills her and calls her to fruitfulness. A helpful resource for ladies who desire to face the challenges of aging with grace.

Nancy Wilson, $12.00 | G-115
Hard teaching makes soft, tenderhearted Christians, and soft teaching makes callous, hard-hearted Christians. Being Christian delivers hard teaching in bite-sized lessons of applicable wisdom—the product of over three decades of Jim Wilson’s pastoral experience. The book shares St. Paul’s ambitious goal: to present every person perfect in Christ. Topics include prayer, evangelism, everyday holiness, joy, love, family, and (of course) what it means to be a Christian. ead at your own pace or dowload a free 52-week reading schedule from canonpress.com.
This study of fourteen biblical virtues will help women of all ages pursue fruitfulness in the knowledge of Christ. Learn about the Christian woman’s first and highest duty, why it’s so important for wives to be women of valor, what it looks like to be a leading woman in your community, and how to pursue virtue when everyone tells you that sort of thing is no longer important. Virtuous features concise explanations, application questions, assignments that will involve and challenge everyone, and lots of biblical wisdom for individuals and groups.
Eve in Exile and the Restoration of Femininity Rebekah Merkle, $16.00 | I-130 The swooning ladies of the Victorian Age and the suburban housewives of the 1950s genuinely needed to be liberated. So wave after wave of feminists have held rallies for women’s suffrage, marched for Prohibition, promoted abortion, and stood firmly for...nobody’s quite sure what. The truth is, feminists don’t know what liberation is. They have led us into a very boring dead end. Eve in Exile sets aside the stereotypes of china-doll femininity, of fainting Victorians, of women not allowed to think for themselves. It dismisses the stiletto-heeled executives of TV, the outspoken feminists freed from all that hinders them, the brave career women in charge of their own destinies. Once those fictionalized stereotypes are out of the way, Christians can focus on real women. What did God make real women for?

Big Story
TO ORDER: canonpress.com 800-488-2034
by Darren Doane
A
s a filmmaker, I’m constantly thinking about images and the stories they tell. Every picture gets my mind racing, from good food to my kids’ sporting events to watching the evening news. We think of images as static—but every one is a story waiting to be noticed. Whatever you see, there’s a story there. You already know how to do this when you pull out your phone: New post on Instagram? Read the story. A tweet? It’s part of a bigger script. Reflections. Inthe-moment rants. Political updates. (And what a year for that! Talk about story.... By the time you read this, we will know who the next president of the United States of America is going to be.) But right now, they’re all just a bunch of little stories. The big story sometimes disappears in these little images. And the Big Story that got us here—to the place where you can’t believe all the little stories are actually
real—is unprecedented. We know that good stories lead to good images—a video of my son wrestling or a snapshot of my daughter running—but what about the bad stories? What good can those lead to? To answer this, we have to look at the worst image of all: There is Jesus, the Son of God, on the cross, dying. Doesn’t get any worse. The most horrible picture of suffering you have ever seen does not compare to the injustice of the cross. You’re standing there, and the world has come to an end. The Messiah is dead. Sinless and perfect, the one who everyone was sure was going to usher in a new kingdom, a new political party. It’s all bad. And it all happened at the hands of angry fellowmen who decided they would rather a criminal be released in his place. But God works this way. He likes these kinds of images and the stories they encapsulate. And so here we are.
Jesus dies and the political hopes of a people are dashed upon the rocks. And three days later that event is bigger and more beautiful than ever imagined. The King of the Jews now becomes the King of kings and Lord of lords. Not just over a piece of dirt in the Middle East, but over the entire world. Every square inch. Not just one country being forgiven of their sins, but an entire world. And I could go on. That’s the Big Story. For this reason Jesus was born. To take the story of last-second buzzer-beaters to a new place and give us hope in all situations that God works all things for good. (Even this year’s election.) Christmas is the reason for the hope that all Christians have that God is doing amazing perfect things. Those things work themselves out through stories that take time. So take time. Take pictures. Reflect. Prepare. Give gifts in the midst of trials and suffering. Be a blessing. Be a part of the Story.
Stories to Grow On Richard Hannula Whether living family and friends or heroes of the past, models of faithful living are crucial for every child’s growth into Christlikeness. These collections of brief biographies are soul food for kids and grown-ups alike.

Heralds of the Reformation Thirty Biographies of Sheer Grace Richard Hannula, $15.00 | K-116 The sixteenth century in Europe was a tumultuous time. Monumental inventions like the printing press rocked society as huge philosophical shifts caused by Copernicus split the scientific world. But just as important was the seismic upheaval within Christendom herself, as the Church of Rome responded to internal rebuke with oppression. This collection tells the important story of the struggle between the theological authorities and the men and women who refused to keep quiet about the sheer grace of the gospel. Designed for students young and old, this book includes an overview of key events and authorities, a detailed timeline of 1516–1598, seven short summaries of Reformation basics, and comprehension questions and answers covering all thirty biographies.

An exploration of the narrative nature of the world and the personality of the Poet behind it all. What is this place? Why is this place? Who approved it? Am I supposed to take it seriously? Nate Wilson examines the ways humanity has tried to make sense of this carnival ride of a world, looking at everything from quantum physics to the problem of evil. These frequently humorous and uniquely beautiful portraits express the reality of God’s story unfolding around and among us. Welcome to His poem. His play. His novel. His comedy. Let the pages flick your thumbs.
Running time: 90 minutes + 90 minutes of additional footage
Obergefell v. Hodges was a wonderful decision—in that it’s now forcing every Christian to decide whether their allegiance is to the Supreme Court or to the Supreme Being. In every other way, it was a disaster for our nation. And, as with every disaster, the biggest benefit is in understanding how we Christians ignored all warnings and let it happen. Same-Sex Mirage traces the effects of the foundational institution of marriage in every area of life.
Douglas Wilson applies the political craft of radical progressives to Christian efforts in the culture war. The result is a spicy blend of combat manual and cultural manifesto—a little bit proclamation of grace, a little bit Art of War, and a little bit analysis of past embarrassments and current cowardice, all mixed together with a bunch of advanced knife-fighting techniques. Motivating, provocative, and just plain good to read.

Empires of Dirt Secularism, Radical Islam, and the Mere Christendom Alternative Douglas Wilson, $16.00 | I-128 As it self-destructs, the strategy of secularism (the idea that nations can be religiously neutral) is splitting between American exceptionalism and radical Islam. American exceptionalism, the belief that “America” is more than a nation, is folly. Radical Islam is obviously wrong as well, but Muslims at least own the nature of the current cultural conflict. You must follow somebody, whether its Allah, the State, or Jesus Christ. This important and timely book is an analysis of the changing face of religion and politics and also an extended argument for Christian expression of faith in Jesus Christ. This does not mean a withdrawal from politics to our own communities and churches. Instead, we Christians must take what we have learned from the wreck of secularism and build a Christendom of the New Foundation: A network of nations bound together by a formal, public, civic acknowledgment of the lordship of Jesus Christ and the fundamental truth of the Apostles’ Creed.
Confessions of a Food Catholic Foodolatry, Fussing, and Freedom Douglas Wilson, $15.00 | I-131 In recent years, many Christians have developed an unscriptural approach to food. Now, we can sin with food in many ways—by not sharing it, by eating way too much of it, by throwing it across the table—but we do not sin by bowing our heads over it, saying grace with true gratitude in our hearts, and tucking in. Our current issues are not ones of taste or quality, but of phobias and pharisaism. Sharp-edged but funny, Confessions of a Food Catholic tackles threats to Christian table fellowship, the know-it-all pride of newfangled kosher rules, and the displaced moralism that makes “organic” and “natural” the signs of righteousness and disdains the brethren who buy their beef at Stuffmart. A great starting point for those interested in a biblical approach to food.

If the Church is to rise up, full of people who care only for the glory of Jesus and His Kingdom, we must grasp what made Jesus so killable. BloodBought World shows where Christians have hidden behind respectability, comfort, fear, and other idols instead of following Jesus on the path to real authority and power: the cross.
What’s the point in stirring up differences between Geneva and Rome? Don’t we have enough division already? The truth is, we don’t have nearly enough, because clear disagreement is a necessary step on the way to agreement. A starting place for anyone, Catholic or Protestant, with honest questions.
Brewed for clear thinkers and irrational dreamers, this blend is balanced, smooth, and fullflavored. In Dr. Ransom’s opinion, no one brews quite like an Ottoman. Help yourself to the so-called “magical fruit” favored by the Chief Coffee Maker of Suleiman the Magnificent.
Then Tweets My Soul The Church Curmudgeon (David Regier), $12.00 | Q-130 “It used to be that the pastor’s wife was huge and the sanctuary was smokin’ hot.” So observes the Church Curmudgeon, the Internet’s most infamous purveyor of fine vintage whines. With more than nine thousand tweets and ninety thousand followers, he’s proven himself a stalwart of holy hilarity. This poetic collection of the Curmudgeon’s best 140-character compositions will make you ROFL as you recognize the regular cast of churchy characters, including the worship leader, the usher team, and maybe even yourself. One more to whet your appetite: “Usually when the writing is on the wall, it portends the death of a culture. But hey, fine, throw out the hymnals and use a projector.” A perfect stocking-stuffer.
