These body types are based on what you might have often heard of as Body Mass Index (BMI), which is arrived at using a simple formula. BMI = Weight / Height2 BMI ≥ 30 = Moderately Obese BMI ≥ 35 or 40 = Severely Obese BMI ≥ 35 or 40 - 44.9 or 49.9 = Morbidly Obese
Advantages • Targeted depth of penetration makes it a highly effective aesthetic solution. • Collagen network strengthens thereby improving texture and skin tightening. Disadvantages • Not a permanent solution. Needs maintenance sessions once every 12 – 18 months. • The results are not very prominent compared to surgical procedure.
Most of us through our struggle over the years have come to accept the body type we fit into. As a first step, find out which box you tick: • Fit physique but resistant fat deposits • Moderately obese • Severely & morbidly obese
Uses focused Radiofrequency and Ultrasound Technology to redefine appearances. Employs a cooling system to heat deep tissue.
Besides these, there are few other categories that result following pregnancy: • Post Pregnancy Belly with Perfect Weight • Post Pregnancy Belly with Overweight
Towards a Fitter Body
Before you set out on your shape-up journey, understand your body type and decide whether you aspire to become lean, muscular or fit and healthy. Scenario #1: Fit physique but resistant fat deposits • Ideal Weight • Unable to lose weight in specific areas of the body even with regular workouts and dieting Advice: Don’t over exercise or go on a crash diet to lose this fat, or you may end up losing the charm on your face (which is surely not what you want), accompanied by breast sagging in women and an overall sick look. You have a variety of virtually painless, almost risk-free and non invasive / non surgical options like lipolytic injections and body contouring procedures such as Exilis, Coolskulpting and Ultrasound Cavitation, to name a few.
Coolsculpting
Uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells under the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Once crystallized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from the body. Advantages • No downtime • The healthy skin cells remain undisturbed. Disadvantages • Not suitable for extremities like arm or thighs. • Need to wait for at least 6 months to see appreciable results. However, will not match surgical results.
Lipolytic injections
• Involves injecting Phosphatidyl Choline, a natural substance obtained from soy beans. • Enables fat in specific, individual regions of the body to be broken down, which is then absorbed by the body’s metabolism and disposed off naturally. Advantages • It is a gentle, virtually pain free procedure. • Can help getting rid of unwanted localized fat deposits permanently. Disadvantages • The results are not very prominent compared to surgical procedure.
Cavitation Ultrasound
This combines bi & tri polar radiofrequency. Ultrasound waves create a bubble in the tissue of the fat cells which then expands rapidly and compresses, creating temperature increase and implosion. This reduces the fat into a liquid, which is then passed out of the body in the form of urine. Advantages • No downtime • Minimal results Disadvantages • Not ideal for patients with kidney/liver failure, pacemaker and pregnant / lactating mothers. Unfortunately, the above options are not ideal when the fat depots are significant. In such scenarios, surgical liposuction is a much more cost – effective proposition and a onetime affair.
10 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
In the breast area, sagging, upper pole emptiness and weight gain in certain areas are common making them disproportionate compared to the rest of the body Scenario #2: Moderately Obese • Slightly overweight • Overall weight loss paralleled by body toning should do the trick Advice: Choose a solution based on your needs. Combo 1 – Weight Loss + Body Contouring • Weight Loss Programs: The ideal solution would be to instantly resort to an ideal weight loss program. There are a variety of time-tested ones such as Human Chronic Gonadotropin or HCG diet as it is called. The treatment duration spans 26 days or 40 days, depending on the weight loss desired. Here the person who wishes to lose weight is administered HCG injections on a daily basis for 26/40 days, and parallely put on a 500 calorie diet. HCG helps mobilize the unused fat deposits in the body, which is then utilized as a source of energy for anything that the body needs above the 500 calories. Women can lose up to 5 – 7 kg and men up to 6 – 8 kg in a 26 day program. In a 40 days program, women can lose between 6 – 8 kg and men between 8 – 10 kg. • Body Contouring: If some resistant fat deposits persist after the weight loss, non surgical options discussed in the earlier scenario can also be used to supplement.
Combo 2 – Surgical (Liposuction)/Non-surgical + Weight Loss • Surgical options like liposuction can be of help if you aspire for quicker results in difficult areas. • Non surgical options, like the ones explained earlier can also help contour the difficult areas to some extent. Following any of the above surgical / non surgical interventions, for overall weight loss, HCG will be the recommended option. However, in both the scenarios, you may experience issues of loose skin if the weight loss is on the higher side. There are a variety of skin toning creams that can come to your rescue complemented by massages to a certain extent, if not completely. In addition, the non surgical options can help in skin tightening to a significant extent. But the extent of tightening is dependent on the age and lifestyle. Scenario #3: Morbidly Obese • Significantly overweight, limiting even day to day activities • Could be due to some genetic / underlying hormonal problem • May have serious coexisting medical conditions Advice: The most preferred solution in the given scenario is bariatric surgery. Here, weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach, or through removal of a portion of the stomach, or by resecting and re-routing small intestines to a small stomach pouch. It has additional advantages such as significant long term weight loss, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors etc. In case the patient is not willing to go in for bariatric surgery and is very motivated to lose weight through exercise, then a controlled weight loss program like HCG, along with fitness BEAUTY BECAUSE | 11

In case a morbidly obese patient is not willing to go in for bariatric surgery and is very motivated to lose weight through exercise, then a controlled weight loss program like HCG along with fitness programs like yoga is strongly suggested. programs like yoga is strongly suggested. The resultant loose skin can be addressed with cosmetic surgical procedures, which is usually excision of extra skin along with or without liposuction. Skin tightening can also be improved with body contouring devices. Scenario #4: Post Pregnancy Belly with Perfect Weight The most common issue following pregnancy is loose tummy skin and wide gaps between stomach muscles. In the breast area, issues confronted are sagging, upper pole emptiness and weight gain in certain areas making them disproportionate compared to the rest of the body. Advice: For such patients, it is strongly recommended to patiently wait for at least a year as the body condition reverses to a significant extent by then. Till then, patients are advised to perform regular workouts, tummy exercises and follow healthy diets. At the end of this period the following options are available: For a Trimmer Tummy • Mini Tummy Tuck: This is aimed at tightening the muscles in the lower abdomen and is suitable if the abdominal wall does not protrude significantly. It has the advantage of leaving minimal scars compared to full tummy tuck and also faster recovery. • Full Tummy Tuck with Navel Reposition: This addresses muscle separation above and below the belly button and the excessive or loose skin in the belly. It is the treatment of choice if the skin has been stretched by multiple pregnancies. Here the underlying muscle is pulled into a 12 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
tighter position, excess tissue removed and navel detached and repositioned at the appropriate place. This may require a minimum of 1 -1.5 months of recovery. For Firmer Breasts: Breast lift is designed to raise the breast position and nipple/ areola complexes on the chest wall. Tightening of the skin envelope of the breast may serve to raise the position of the breast and can be accomplished in a number of ways: • Breast Lift with Fat Fill: Fat grafting shall involve performing a liposuction from some area of your body, harvesting the fat cells, separating the liquid from it and injecting fat as small droplets into the breast using small special cannulas. Pain tends to be minimal and has reduced downtime to recovery. • Breast Lift with Implant: A simple breast lift may have a disadvantage in that it cannot make breasts bigger and fuller, raising the need for implants. Combining these procedures lift and increase the firmness and size. Occasionally, breast lift might have to be accompanied by a liposuction. Scenario # 5: Post Pregnancy Belly with Overweight This often results from overeating during the pregnancy and breast feeding phase. Advice: Eat healthy, avoid overeating and exercise enough. Doctors prefer putting them through weight loss programs like HCG, enabling loss of up to 10 – 20 kg. The breast sagging and loose tummy can then be addressed in a similar fashion as that in scenario 4.
& MAQUILLAGE
MAKE-UP
AGE
The two most vital secrets to looking beautiful is that we should keep our makeup as natural looking as possible and that we should wear cosmetics that complement our age, skin-tone and face structure Mrs. Sunethra Selvam Naturals -Training and CRM Head sunethra@naturals.in
which results in dry and lacklustre skin. Older women tend to have drier skin and to combat the issue, you should use a cream blush, which is more hydrating along with a radiant primer to add a bit of shine and lend a glowing touch. Apply makeup in an upward motion, including the cheek area when applying blush, contouring, bronzer, etc. to give the face the appearance of a lift.
Graceful Forties
M
akeup is an art. A perfectly touched up face earns compliments while a pancaked visage becomes the subject of ridicule. Knowing the what-to, when-to and how-to of makeup application is as important as matching the dress to the accessories. If not done well, it jars with your personality and makes you stand out for the wrong reasons. Here is a brief guide to ageappropriate makeup:
Trendy Twenties
In your 20s, the skin has its own natural glow. So go light on the foundation and match it with your skin tone. The same rule applies for the colours you use for your eyes.
For your cheeks, all you need is a sheer stain or a gel blush to enhance your features. You can experiment with bright blushes; however, it is important to keep in mind the colour of your complexion when choosing the right shades.
Tricky Thirties
Women in their 30s need to tone down the palette of their makeup as this is the age that the initial telltale signs of aging like crows’ feet and fine lines begin to appear. Go a little on the heavy side with your foundation, but wear blush in more muted colours. As women grow older, oil production by skin glands is substantially reduced
For women in their 40s and above, it is the time to let yourself age with grace. Be kind and gentle to your face and avoid makeup that is matte-based. Frosty, shiny or metallic colours for your eyes are a no-no because that will only highlight the lines and wrinkles. Keep your lipstick colours light and never attempt to wear bright hues such as blues or reds.
Choosing the Blush
A brush of blush adds an instant breath of freshness to the face! But if applied wrongly, it gives a caked appearance to it. The simplest trick to finding the right blush is to pinch your cheeks and then pick a shade that is closest to your natural flush. This method will ensure that you pick the most flattering colour for your skin tone. Powder blush is typically best for oily and combo skin; cream is great for dry skin; liquid and gel are perfect for oily skin. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 13

H
uge multinational investors have started venturing into the cosmetic surgical space, to exploit the ever growing urge of consumers to seem perfect and enhance appearance for reasons of emotional or social acceptance. The bad news is this has caused a lot of commercialization of cosmetic procedures and dilution of ethics, due to the underlying profit motives. It is so unfortunate that clients are put through such painful procedures when they could have been addressed with simple, pain-free, non-surgical interventions at times. In the name of profit maximization, a number of services are performed by unqualified professionals, wherein the procedure demands qualified and certified professionals to handle equipments, understand its working and alter treatment delivery accordingly.
Unethical Practices
An ethically sound surgeon refuses to perform procedures that are unnecessary and / or if they feel the patient is not ideal for that intervention. It is unfortunate that clients opt for doctor shopping when denied a procedure rather than understand the ground reality. It is very important to respect the opinion of a surgeon and understand that any decision made is in your best interest.
Here is an example:
• Liposuction is meant for shaping up and not for weight loss. It works on those with stubborn fat pockets, or male breasts. There are clients with not so stubborn fat, in whom HCG diet plan works wonders and helps lose 6 – 8 Kg in a month. In hypertensive and diabetics, bariatric surgery is most recommended and could potentially improve their condition in addition to making them appear more appealing. Do you expect a commercially driven centre
to understand what any of the above means except for in terms of return on investments? • Another disturbing area of exploitation is hair transplantation (Follicular Unit Transplantation), where the treatment cost is calculated on a per graft basis. Believe me, irrespective of the experience, no surgeon can estimate the exact number of grafts that one can derive from a donor area on the treatment table. Irrespective of the numbers, a responsible surgeon would deliver all of the grafts that he can possibly to the recipient site as it makes no sense to deprive someone of extra grafts just because he paid for less than the actual number of grafts. And if they don’t, you know what their focus is like. A look at the statistics of the number of corrective surgeries in the cosmetic space today would leave every ethically practising cosmetic surgeon startled, the reason being that these consumers are left trapped in the hands of commercialists. And the irony is that the client pays more than what he/ she had planned for in the first place due to the series of corrective surgeries that follow and that too without appreciable results.
Consumer Rights
There are often times that clients are unhappy that the treating surgeon delivered less than desired outcomes, when in reality the surgeon would have been at his best. It results from underlying differences in the perception of what is perfect and not so perfect, which may vary from one individual to the other. This is particularly true in fat fill procedures and nose correction (rhinoplasty). There lies a heavy responsibility on part of the client to put forth what outcome exactly he/she desires and this requires that they find a surgeon
who can give them a lot of time to understand him/her. It is every client’s right to research the credentials of the treating surgeons, tour the treatment space and gather information about alternative treatment options available. In fact, it is strongly recommended that by the time the client comes over for a face to face consultation, they should ideally know about the options to address their issues. This shall help them to pose the right questions and bridge gaps between their views and what the surgeon has to advise. And if the client ever senses that they are being pushed to take up some procedure/ products, they should certainly seek a second opinion. Unfortunately, a number of corporate hospitals (I do not wish to mention names here) base the pay of surgeons on the number of surgeries they perform or the number of products they can push. Please do not get carried away by flashy advertisements. After all, they are meant to get you carried away and your discrimination matters. PEARLY WHITES A brief insight into how to design the perfect smile window Dr. Sharmilee Mohan Dentist sharmileemohan77@gmail.com
A
smile can be simply defined as a facial expression but its significance is far from being simple. Its mystique has been glorified and pondered upon by poets, lyricists, linguists, bards and writers of the literary world and studied extensively by the medical world. It goes without saying that an appealing smile can vastly improve the attractiveness of a person and boost their self-esteem and confidence. Most of us may not be blessed with such a dazzling smile and if you are one among them, your next stop should be at your dentist’s. The set of front six to ten teeth that are exposed while smiling is known as the Smile Window. Your dentist, with the help of scientifically advanced methods collectively known as Smile Design, can greatly improve the aesthetic appeal of this window to give you that perfect Hollywood star smile. Let us touch upon two such methods:
Teeth Whitening: Discoloured
teeth ruin even the most proportionate smile. If you have stained teeth that you would love to have whitened but the fear of pain is stopping you from visiting your dentist, then toss away your fears. Today’s physiciansupervised whitening systems are painless, effective and not at all time consuming. And the best part is that they do not alter the structure of the tooth enamel.
Dental Veneer: Dental veneers
are tooth coloured wafer-thin shells designed to cover the front surface of a tooth to improve its appearance. Imperfections such as discolouration, corroded teeth and gaps between teeth can almost magically be corrected just by applying a dental veneer. Veneers are made up of different materials. Your dentist is the best person to suggest the right material. It is beyond the scope of this article to explain the entire processes of Smile Design. Please consult your dental expert and smile your way to success in life!

Everyone desires a perfect set of teeth but genes, lifestyle factors, illnesses and poor oral hygiene may play spoilsport. To mask cosmetic imperfections and improve the shape, size and colour of the teeth, dental composites can be the ideal answer
D
ental composites occupy a vital place in dentistry. These synthetic resins are primarily used as tooth fillings. As the name suggests, a composite is a combination of two or more different materials, the main ones being ceramic and plastic compounds. There are double benefits of using resin composites: they are the most convenient materials for the front teeth as they sharply resemble the appearance of natural teeth; the strength of resin compounds make them perfect for use in the hardworking and durable back teeth as well.
Composite Improvement
Having been in use since prehistoric times for varied reasons, the entry of composites in dentistry was relatively late. Since then they have undergone many changes in their chemical composition and seen vast improvements over the years. These changes have come in terms of greater colour stability thanks to the use of more stable polymerization promoters, marked increase in resistance to wear
and tear due to finely ground fillers, and use of dentin adhesives making them well sought after by dental patients and widely accepted by dentists.
Composite Application
There are several steps involved in the application of a composite filling: • Before the procedure begins your dentist numbs your tooth and applies a rubber dam. The rubber dam will isolate the teeth that the dentist will be working on, and will protect you, the patient, from water spray or the accidental ingestion of any materials.
illnesses and poor oral hygiene may play spoilsport. To mask cosmetic imperfections and improve the shape, size and colour of the teeth, dental composites can be the ideal answer. • Spaces between teeth look undesirable and may take away from the aesthetic appeal of the face. These spaces can be filled and streamlined by adding composites. • Composites can also be used to protect thermally sensitive areas and to repair and strengthen broken teeth.
• The tooth is ready to be filled after all the decay and weakened tooth structure has been removed. • The composite resin is applied in layers and hardened using a specific wavelength of light after each application. Hence, they are also called as ‘light cured fillings’.

Composites vs. Amalgam
Amalgam or resin composites: the topic has perhaps always been an area of dentistry debate. Traditional dental fillings were mostly made of metal amalgam, locally recognised by people as silver fillings. These fillings were considered stronger and longer lasting and so were used for the back teeth. But now that resin composites have upped their position thanks to technological improvement, they have become favourites for the back as well as the front teeth too. There are several advantages to using composite fillings over amalgam fillings. • While metal amalgams have a visible silver tint, the wide palette of colours available in composite dentistry ensures near invisible restoration of teeth. • The fact that composite fillings are glued (bonded) to the tooth means that unlike amalgam fillings, destroying healthy tooth to create retentive features is not needed. In case of an amalgam filling the dentist has to rely to an extent on the internal shape of the tooth to hold the filling and this sometimes requires drilling of a healthy tooth to retain the filling. • From an environmental perspective, composites are ‘green’ fillings compared to amalgam fillings as the former avoids mercury contamination which may be common in case of the latter. While adjusting amalgam fillings, some mercury-containing amalgam is inevitably washed down drains. Also, preparing new amalgam fillings and drilling into existing ones, dentists get exposed to harmful mercury vapour. Use of composite fillings generally eliminates this danger, unless the procedure also involves removing an existing amalgam filling. • In the versatility stakes too, composites are way ahead of amalgams as they can be used to repair a variety of problems like chipped, broken, worn teeth which may not be possible with amalgam fillings. It is comparatively easy to replace damaged composite filling than metal amalgam ones. Though the scales appear to tip heavily in favour of composites, amalgams are not without their pros: 20 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
Amalgam or resin composites: the topic has perhaps always been an area of dentistry debate. These fillings were considered stronger and longer lasting and so were used for the back teeth. But now that resin composites have upped their position thanks to technological improvement, they have become favourites for the back as well as the front teeth too • In some situations, composite fillings may not last as long as amalgam fillings under the pressure of chewing, particularly if used for large cavities.
• Composite fillings are more economical and conservative alternative to dental crowns but could cost a lot more than amalgam fillings.
• Due to the sometimes complicated application procedures and the need to keep the prepared tooth absolutely dry, composite restorations may take up to 20 minutes longer than equivalent amalgam restorations.
• Both fillings require expert hands but the level of expertise required in case of composite fillings is much higher than that of amalgam fillings. The onus is on the patient to find a skilled practitioner.
• Keeping the prepared tooth completely dry can also be difficult for any work involving treatment of cavities below the gum line.
• The coarse surface of the composite filling may encourage the accumulation of plaque. So, proper finishing of the composite restoration is an absolute must.

BREATH Surveys on dating websites show that oral odour is the biggest turn off on a date and keeps potential relationships from forming. ad breath, as we all know, is unpleasant odour from the mouth. Some people get it occasionally, while for others, it is a chronic condition. The mouth has hundreds of nooks and crannies, making it the breeding ground for bacteria to gorge on food particles, speeding them to rot, therefore smell bad. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 21
Certain foods contribute to smelly breath. Remember those fumes a loved one blew all over you? It was after a hearty Italian meal loaded with garlic. Other smelly but nutritious foods include raw onions, some cheeses, fish, even coffee Bad breath causes
Two major sources of mouth odour are bacteria and decaying food particles. Morning breath, though is a different story altogether. Almost everybody has it. Saliva production nearly stops when you sleep, bacteria grows, causing bad breath. Certain foods contribute to smelly breath. Remember those fumes a loved one blew all over you? It was after a hearty Italian meal loaded with garlic. Other smelly but nutritious foods include raw onions, some cheeses, fish, even coffee. A low carb diet, meant to drop a few kilos can contribute towards you losing a few friends as well, because of what is called ‘ketone breath.’ These diets cause the body to burn fat as its energy source. The endproduct of making this energy is the ketone, which causes a fruity acetonelike smell, which is evident among anorexics too. Tobacco products are villains in more ways than one. Smoking and chewing 22 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
them leaves chemicals in the mouth, staining teeth and reducing your ability to taste food. Besides, smoking repercussions include gum disease or oral cancers. Result: bad breath. Poor dental hygiene is a sure shot to bad breath. Animal teeth must be made of stronger stuff. But we humans must brush twice a day and floss regularly, or lodged food particles and the bacteria already residing in your mouth will have fun helping food bits rot. Lack of dental care leads to a build up of plaque in the mouth: another cause for its own brand of distinguishing odour. Plaque build up could lead to gum disease. A mild form is called gingivitis. If left untreated, it advances to periodontitis. Health problems cause mouth odour too. Diseases like sinus infections, diabetes, pneumonia, thrush, throat infections, lactose intolerance and liver or kidney diseases contribute to smelly oral fumes. Often, when someone needs hydration, bad breath occurs. A dry mouth is again the playground for bacteria.
Saliva needs water to help moisten and cleanse the mouth. Hydration, though, is not the answer to every dry mouth. It could have any of these causes: salivary gland problems, connective tissue disorders, medication or breathing through the mouth. Cavities or crooked teeth, if not cared for and straightened are inviting nooks for food to snuggle into, resulting in mouth odour. Crooked teeth can be corrected by braces, but proper care has to be taken when braces are in the mouth. If braces (and ill fitting dentures, for that matter) are not properly cleaned, they automatically become new homes for food particles to lodge into, allowing the resident bacteria to have fun. Some medication, including insulin shots, antihistamines, diuretics etc. cause the dry mouth syndrome, which automatically results in mouth odour. Anaesthesia too has this temporary effect on the mouth. While the teeth and surrounding gaps
invite food particles to lodge, the tonsils too play host to calcified food, mucus and bacteria. These are called Tonsil Stones and could be painful if left untreated adding to the concern of bad breath. Baby breath could turn unpleasant when babies have unclean stuff sticking in their noses, causing them to breathe through their mouths.
Possible Remedies
• First of all, dental hygiene is a must. Brush your teeth twice a day. When you brush, remember to clean your tongue. Use your toothbrush or get a tongue cleaner. Even the edge of a spoon will do. Be gentle, as you could ruin your taste buds and what is life without food? When you have a drink, swish it around in your mouth and suction your tongue a bit. It will dislodge the food that could be stuck there. • Every few days, use floss in between your teeth. The package comes with instructions, read them. Flossing is as important as brushing. It frees
Get your teeth cleaned by a dentist twice annually. Visiting a dentist could be your last priority, nut make it your first – every six months food particles sticking to your teeth, between your gums.
• Drink lots of water. This may sound like a fitness tip, but water works in many ways. So drink up the zero calorie stuff. Staying hydrated helps generate saliva, the arch rival of bad breath. Teach people to swallow it instead of spitting it out. The enzyme kills bacteria and keeps the mouth smell free. • Chew gum. It is a good jaw exercise and keeps the salivary glands active. Choose cinnamon flavours over mint. It helps reduce bacteria. However, try to keep away from the sugar coated gum. Instead looks for the variety sweetened using xylitol – a sugar substitute. • Dentures MUST be removed at night. Do not sleep with them on. Clean them before going to sleep.
The advantage is you can see them from all angles.
• Try and avoid stinky foods. If you must, eat them for dinner so you can brush immediately after. Whatever you do, don’t gorge on them for lunch, and not before an important meeting or job interview. • A carb-free diet can be awful on the breath. Try to bung in a banana or an apple into your diet mix and blend it all together. • Get your teeth cleaned by a dentist twice annually. Visiting a dentist could be your last priority, but make it your first – every six months. • Finally, if all else fails, fix that appointment with the dentist immediately. It could be a medical problem that would need simple medication. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 23

An increasing need to become fairer could result in a paradoxical effect: Cosmetic Melanosis. This is a condition, where the skin gets more darkened than before due to careless use of bleaching creams and over-the-counter (OTC) skin glow products. 24 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
I
t is human nature to try and be what you are not or get what you don’t have. The straight haired want it curly and the curly haired want it straight, those who are dusky skinned want to be fairer. What we have is never what we want. Talk of the grass always being greener on the other side. Perhaps paramount among these wants is the need we feel to look fairer than we are. Because of this, the quest for the perfect fairness product is always on. Along with more spending power the need to become fairer is growing at such a pace, that people are often swept down the garden path by marketing gimmicks. Various pharmaceutical companies and cosmetic corporations endorse skin-lightening products through whatever media they can, whether it is print, internet or television. Buyers are so swept away by the promise of a fairer skin that they forget to ask relevant skin saving questions. How exactly do these products work? What could be the possible results or side effects (if any)? Are the results long lasting?
Harms of Hq
Hydroquinone (Hq) is the most common de-pigmenting agent available in the market. It gives a drastic colour change over a short period. However, the FDA and other standard setting agencies have reported that long term use of Hq can result in blue-black darkening and thickening of skin, a condition called ochronosis. A study was conducted amongst darker skin individuals from two South African hospitals. Among 69% of patients who used skin-lightening agents, 42% of females and 15% of males were recognised with ochronosis. Hq also makes skin sensitive to sunlight. Hence, it is mandatory to use good sun-safety measures when using Hq containing products. Nevertheless, most patients who buy OTC products are not aware of the importance of sun protection, and notice skin darkening in spite of using this ‘fairness cream’ constantly.
advise you rightly on how to apply these products and for how long to apply.
Banes of Bleaching
Another common way of masking skin pigmentation is through the use of bleaching agents. In many areas, unregulated products are sold without listing their contents. These agents often contain steroids, Hq and mercury oxide. In most bleaching products, Hq may be included with different names such as Quinol, Benzene-1, 4-Diol, Tequinol and many more. The lay person is not aware of the exact product contents and their effects. Here is information: Mercury can slowly but surely cause skin and nail darkening. In a study conducted on 620 women from Saudi Arabia, most were forced to continuously use the bleaching agents, as stopping them caused more darkening of the skin.
See a Specialist
The only way to fairness is to understand the reasons behind your individual skin pigmentation. Once you know the how and the why of your skin, your dermatologist will be able to suggest a course of action. The reasons can be the simple effects of sun damage to inflammatory skin disorders. Now for the good news: a doctor’s palette of skin brightening treatment options is increasing tremendously. They range from external applying agents to physical treatment options such as chemical peeling and lasers. Remember, treatment through a skin specialist will be individualised according to patient’s skin characteristic and cosmetic concerns. This is quite unlike OTC products that could cause adverse effects such as Cosmetic Melanosis.
In fact, Hq is banned in certain parts of the world because of its long-term side effects. In India, 2% Hq is available over the counter and 4% available via doctor’s prescription. The National Toxicology Programme, which provides scientific study data to FDA in the U.S., is still assessing the longterm dermal toxicity effects of Hq. A few animal studies indicate that oral Hq has carcinogenicity and immuno-toxic properties. This means they are harmful if consumed orally.
Tribulations of Tretinoin
In addition to Hq, the other common ingredients in skin glow products are steroids and Tretinoin (Vitamin A derivative). Tretinoin helps in penetration of Hq, whilst steroids help in reducing the irritation caused by Tretinoin and Hq. This combination is studied worldwide and is proven effective in skin lightening. However, if used over a wide time frame, steroids can result in side effects such as acne, hirsutism, telengectesia (fine blood vessels under skin) and skin weakening. Similarly, imprudent use of Tretinoin can result in retinoid dermatitis, where there is intense irritation, dryness and redness of the skin. Using Hq and Tretinoin continuously in areas with thin skin such as nasolabial folds and around eyes, can result in hyperchromia (skin darkening). It is important you consult a qualified dermatologist before using these products, as he or she will
A formal assessment with the skin specialist will help you:
• Understand the pigmentary problem in depth • Understand different treatment options • Choose the option according to your concern and skin type • Understand how the treatment works • Take precautions while switching treatment options • Understand the side effects, if any, and how to get them treated BEAUTY BECAUSE | 25

When did you discover your love for all things fashion? Ever since I can remember I have felt the need to be near all things beautiful, rearranging things to make them look appealing or sketching my thoughts on paper. If these were not telltale signs enough of a future designer, my parents will tell you that as a child growing up in the Middle East, I would scout the most expensive stores for the perfect pieces. I always thought I lived in two parallel worlds at the same time: one life was just too boring for my liking. What are your feelings and emotions at the start of your fashion show? Before a show I am usually just frantically running around to make sure that all the key elements are going to function well together; it is like a big production, the ensembles, models, hair, makeup, choreography, music, lights and action. However much planning I put into it, inevitably it still is chaos back stage, considering there are about 20 models, and hardly any time for costume changes...so it is mayhem! Each show I tell myself, I am going to be a spectator this time, just sit back and watch proceedings but that has never happened. I feel if I am not there looking into each aspect of it, it will fall apart. Those are the perils of being a perfectionist, but then only I know my collection, and would not trust anyone else with it. Simply put, it is a huge rush of adrenaline. 26 | BEAUTY BECAUSE

Last year at the CIFW, your retro collection turned quite a few heads. How did the collection come about? Every season I am inspired by something different. My sensibilities remain the same, but my inspirations and fascinations keep changing. Summer ’14 was all about a retro revival, and I was mad about Mad Men (the sitcom) – it seemed to bring back lady like styles of the 50s and 60s, which had got lost in the subsequent androgyny of the following eras. I was just having a lot of fun with the collection: saris with strawberry print cholis, checkered lehenghas with cropped tops matched with hats and suspenders. I love drapes, and quirky fashion, and high street fashion as seen on the streets in Helsinki, it was a potpourri of elements, experiments and mix and match. What are your thoughts when you create a fashion range, in general? What silhouettes and body shapes do you keep in mind while designing? I am like a possessed being when I am creating a range; when I am inspired by something, I am constantly working in my head, visualizing the collection, the colours, silhouettes, textures, all just seem to fall in place to create the perfect harmony and balance. As a designer I am fickle about body images, one season I like skinny models, the next it is the voluptuous pin up girl that I fancy, but it all depends on the collection and the imagery I like to portray. When we see models sashaying down the ramp in varied creations we feel the connection between them and the clothes. Is it difficult to achieve that connection or does it become a cakewalk with experience and instinct? I think it is a skill that the models need to perfect besides the catwalk. Most professional models will perfect how to emote the feel of the garment, based on the designer’s vision. We usually brief the models on the inspiration and feel of the collection, so that it will reflect in both their attitude and walk. Yes it takes years to be a supermodel who will with ease blend into the collection. Mehendi has been featuring quite prominently on the Indian wedding scene. What was the motivation behind starting the magazine? The magazine is the brainchild of my friend and publisher Fayaz Mohammed who hails from a business family that deals in weddings cards and with whom I joined hands later on. The wedding industry is huge in our country, we have all heard of the Big Fat Indian Wedding, but until now it was a largely disorganized affair full of cacophony, especially in Southern India. This in itself was motivation enough. Mehendi is South India’s first Wedding Magazine, which aims at giving the readers various options to plan their most memorable day, from themes and locations to ceremonies, honeymoon, gifting etc. What is your take on wedding grooming and bridal fashion in the Indian context? Like I mentioned earlier, although it is a huge industry, grooming was a half baked affair; it was run by people with partial knowledge and no passion. Today grooming is like a religion, especially for the bride and groom; months of preparation go into planning the wedding attire, hair/makeup 28 | BEAUTY BECAUSE

As a child I would read Vogue and National Geographic with equal fervour. Not surprising then that I wanted to be a fashion designer and a journalist at the same time. I did not know what to choose, so I decided to do both (laughs). Of course, fashion is my passion and livelihood; I studied to be a professional designer, but being a writer was by chance, although it was a just fancy. ON THE WALL Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a condition which causes people to obsess about their appearance and also to have an exaggerated perception of a flaw. Although this flaw is unnoticeable to others some BDD sufferers may not leave the sanctuary of their homes, fearing others may notice it and discuss it. These thoughts can affect the normal day to day functioning of a person who suffers from it Dr. Mini Rao Psychologist raomini@hotmail.com
BEAUTY BECAUSE | 29
Most of the time people with BDD are preoccupied with some aspect of their face and may believe that they have several defects concerning their eyes, nose, chin, hair, skin and lips. People living with BDD will complain that a particular feature is too small, too big, too broad or too narrow. BDD can relate to any part of the body as well including breast, thighs, stomach, neck
BDD
is more common among people who have previously gone through cosmetic surgery or suffer from a mental illness. When a person is suffering from BDD, cosmetic surgery is not the answer as it is a mental health problem that is related to body image. It is more imagined and exaggerated in the sufferer’s mind.
Imagined Ugliness Syndrome
‘Dysmorphophobia’, as BDD was earlier called, was first used by Italian psychiatrist Enrique Morselli. He coined it over a hundred years ago and the term is still used sometimes in the UK. BDD is often referred to as the ‘imagined ugliness syndrome’. The perceived ugliness is very real to the sufferer. People with BDD mostly realise that others believe their appearance to be ‘normal’ and have been told that repeatedly but their perception of ugliness is very real to them. Body Obsessed
Now, don’t go into a flight of fancy thinking you have BDD, because everybody has normal concerns and complaints regarding their facial features or body. It is the degree of obsession that varies. When the obsession becomes too intense, hampering daily life and movement, it is considered to be BDD. People with BDD are extremely preoccupied with their obsession and are distressed by it. To them it is so real that they cannot forget about it and function normally. There are people who don’t want to go to work because they think their nose is too big and colleagues will make fun of them. People with BDD avoid a range of social situations because of the anxiety and discomfort these situations create. If they have no choice but to be present at the social function, they may camouflage themselves excessively to hide their imagined defect by overdoing their makeup, styling their hair in an unusual way, wearing heavy clothes and generally trying to take the focus off their defect to other areas like clothes and accessories. Some behaviours particular to people suffering from BDD include: • Checking their appearance in a mirror • Constantly seeking reassurance about their appearance • Adjusting their hair repeatedly • Touching their skin often to feel it
• Comparing themselves to models/actors in magazines or their friends and family
Self Esteem Issues
Generally, people hide their disorder rather than seek help for it. Often it is because they are not aware that help is available, making statistics difficult to measure. Most sufferers of BDD also have other mental health problems and often the BDD may get misdiagnosed or not recognised at all due to this. Like a lot of other self esteem related issues, BDD strikes most commonly in adolescents, a time when young adults go through insecurities about their looks. Many suffer from negative body image and are very sensitive about their appearance. These young people feel embarrassed to talk to a professional about their problems. They live with BDD for many years unaware that help is available, only if they seek it. When they get round to asking for help, they often hide their real problem and talk about other symptoms for depression and social anxiety, till the qualified professional they go to skilfully unravels the real problem. People living with BDD are likely to experience social isolation as they are too concerned about their imagined minor defect. Several feel shame, guilt and loneliness. These feelings manifest into other mental illnesses like anxiety disorders, depression, suicidal thoughts or phobias. One study reported that 19 % of people diagnosed with BDD had suicidal thoughts. 7% attempted suicide because of their appearance. Some even have a worse quality of life than those with depression.
Theories behind BDD
Reasons for BDD are still being researched and it continues to be a baffling subject. There are two different theories - one is hereditary and the other psychological. The hereditary explanation suggests that people are more likely to develop BDD if it is present among their family members. Triggers for BDD include stressful events, trauma or abuse in childhood. The psychological explanation relates BDD to low self-esteem and the way people judge themselves almost exclusively by their appearance. They expect perfection in their looks and get dejected if they don’t achieve it. Many individuals with BDD have repeatedly sought treatment from cosmetic surgeons with little satisfaction, before finally turning to get help for their deeper psychological issues from a mental health professional.
Help is at Hand
There are different kinds of psychological help that can be administered to those with BDD: • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT): a combination of psychotherapy and behaviour therapy. The main aim of CBT is to help a person challenge their thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes (their cognitive processes) that have negative effects on their feelings and behaviour. Through CBT, a person develops new ways of thinking and of coping with emotional difficulties. The main emphasis in CBT is to focus on the negative attitudes and beliefs the BDD sufferers have regarding their physical appearance and the person’s perceived defect in particular. During CBT people learn alternative ways of thinking, including ways of directing their attention away from their defects. They are made to confront their fears without hiding behind them and learn to stop rituals such like checking in the mirror and excessive grooming. • Medication like anti-depressants has been known to have had some success in treating people with BDD. Antipsychotic drugs have been known to work with BDD sufferers to reduce their bizarre thoughts and delusions regarding their imagined defect.

• Some BDD sufferers feel the need to manage the condition themselves. For them self help books and easily accessible online guidance can help them deal with their problem. The internet is preferable for those who prefer anonymity and physical invisibility, and could benefit from joining a self-help group. Meeting others with the same condition reassures them and makes them feel that they are not alone and can provide moral support and useful tips on coping with BDD on a daily basis. VAGINA DIALOGUES
Even in the 21st century, female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) is a hush hush topic. This coyness, however, leads to a lot of wrong decisions and a lifetime full of regrets. L
ike Harry Potter’s arch nemesis, Voldemort, the vagina has gained the dubious tag of “The One which must not be named”. Uttering the ‘V’ word causes a lot of squeamishness and discomfort, especially in the subcontinent which in spite of being the land of Kamasutra, unfortunately prefers to sweep the subject of sex and sex organs under the carpet. Many women wish to undergo genital cosmetic surgery for diverse reasons but the lack of proper information hinders them from getting the right kind of treatment.
The Right Reasons
Most women opt for genital plastic surgery not only for improving the vaginal structure but also for enhancing their self esteem. Before opting for any procedure, they must analyse the reason they want to do it for. The main ones include: • Conforming to Perceptions: The external genitalia of a woman, called the vulva, comprise the labia majora, the labia minora, the clitoris,
the urethra and the vagina. Many women wish to alter the appearance of the vulva as they think that they do not conform to the normal range.
• Boosting Sexual Gratification Post Pregnancy: Studies point towards vaginal relaxation being among the top reasons why treatment is sought. In vaginal relaxation, the muscles become lax, especially after childbirth, and have poor tone, strength and control. Women who have had children want a solution to rejuvenate the vagina and improve sexual satisfaction. • Overcoming Genetic Determination: Sometimes, genes have the last say in the shape of the vulva. In some women, heredity may dictate that they have vaginas which vary widely from the normal range. In these cases, cosmetic surgery can be a great boon. • Correcting Congenital Defects/ Abnormalities: Conditions such as vaginal atresia (absent vaginal passage), Mullerian
agenesis (malformed fallopian tubes and uterus), intersex conditions (male and female characteristics in a person), tearing of labia minora due to accident, age etc. may warrant genital surgery.
• Aesthetic Reasons: Thanks to the advancement in beauty, skincare and increase in awareness of personal hygiene and aesthetics, women going in for grooming techniques such as Brazilian wax, shaving etc. are on the rise. Such procedures may make them feel self conscious about the appearance of their labia and they may opt for cosmetic surgery. • Others: Bothersome complaints like chronic irritation, improper hygiene and interference with wearing tight clothes can also determine a woman’s desire for opting for the procedure.
The Perfect Procedure
FGCS is a vast umbrella under which diverse procedures are available. The doctor is the best person to suggest the right one depending on the complaint: • Labioplasty: Middle aged women with enlarged labia are normally offered reduction surgery. Labioplasty is done under local anaesthesia with minimal post-operative discomfort. Healing
Sometimes, a minor complaint may warrant a minor corrective step: exercise, a change in diet or medication. In such cases, it is better not to opt for surgery. Many a time, the ‘problem’ could be a body image issue. In such cases, counselling can help a lot. Go in for the surgery only when you determine that the problem is causing you physical discomfort, mental stress and lifestyle hindrances 34 | BEAUTY BECAUSE

have been contemplating FGCS for any reason, do keep the following in mind before taking the decision:
• Hymenoplasty: This is offered to women who want to restore a ruptured hymen. This surgery is also done under local anaesthesia and heals well with a few days of rest at home. • Vaginal Tightening: This surgery is done to narrow wide and lax vagina with around 95% patient satisfaction and a bonus of improved sensation in 50% of them.

Normally performed with a view to improve sexual gratification, it has been claimed to have helped reduce symptoms of stress urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine when laughing, sneezing, coughing, and/or exercising).

A perceived imperfection in the vaginal area is not reason enough to rush to the nearest cosmetic surgeon. In case you
• Never withhold information from your consulting expert: Be open and frank; discuss the exact reasons and the results desired. Provide your medical history, list of allergies, if any, especially to medication. • Empower yourself about the risk factor: All surgeries carry some possibility of risk. Make sure you are aware of or informed about the possible risks, side effects etc.
• Age Matters: As full genital development is not generally complete before 18, the procedure should not be carried out on minors in normal circumstances, unless otherwise recommended by the doctor.
Precautions and Care
If you have opted for FGCS, keep in mind the following: • No to Smoking/Drinking: Stop consuming alcohol and smoking at least a fortnight before the surgery. • Medication to Avoid: Ensure you follow the list of medicines to avoid as per your doctor’s advice. Normally, experts advise the discontinuation of the use of medicines which act as blood thinners as they could cause excessive bruising, bleeding etc. • Discomfort Factor: Post operation there could be some discomfort and swelling and this may need you to refrain from exercising or sexual intercourse for a few days, as per your doctor’s advice. NEW EAR
One of the objectives of otoplasty is to help pin back prominent ears. Here, we shed light on the external ear deformities, otoplasty techniques and outcome Dr.Venkat Kiran Cosmetic Surgeon - Chennai Plastic Surgery kprasadnv@gmail.com
A
beautiful face always attracts compliments. “Almond shaped eyes”, “An aquiline nose” or “Bee stung lips” are among the frequently heard ones but you can barely hear someone say, “What proportionate ears!” When assessing the face, the external ear is hardly given much importance when compared to its other facial feature cousins such as eyes, nose and lips. However while perfectly proportionate ears blend in naturally with a person’s profile, prominent or deformed ears stand out and attract a lot of negative attention. Those who have ears that ‘stick out’ know the disharmony and unhappiness this causes. 36 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
What is Otoplasty?
It denotes surgical and non-surgical techniques for correcting deformities or defects of the auricle (external ear). It is performed on patients who are dissatisfied with the natural shape of the ears or when an injury has deformed the normal shape. Otoplasty is done more commonly on children and rarely on neglected adults. This surgery does not alter hearing ability as it involves only the external ear. Success rate depends on proper planning and execution of surgery. There is no specific surgical technique for otoplasty.
It is a combination of multiple meticulous techniques wherein execution differs in each patient.
Aesthetic Parameters
There is wide variability between the normal and the abnormal ear; it is literally a question of angle and shape of individual parts in the auricle. The normal external ear is separated from the side of the head by 2 cm and forms an angle of less than 25 degrees. Beyond these approximate normal limits, the ear will appear prominent when viewed from either the front or back. The helical rim should project symmetrically about 10 to 12 mm from the scalp at the uppermost part of the auricle. Ideally, the upper third of the helix should be visible on frontal view, 2-5mm laterally behind the antihelical and also the helix should follow a smooth curve. The conchal depth and the ear lobule are also important for symmetry of the auricle.
Auricular Deformities
Prominent ear is the most common auricular deformity affecting approximately 5% of the population. In fact, it is considered the most common congenital deformity of the head and neck. The three most common causes for prominent ear are: underdeveloped anti-helical fold, prominent concha and protruding ear lobule. The most frequently noted abnormality is a relatively underdeveloped antihelix, especially underdeveloped at the upper pole along the superior crus. This leads to flattening, lengthening and asymmetry. The second most observed deformity is conchal deformity (normally the tragus-antitragus complex should project laterally about 1 cm from the depth of the conchal bowl). A less common abnormality is the underdevelopment of crura, commonly inferior crus of anti- helix. Another infrequent deformity is a deficient helial roll and protrusion of ear lobule. Macrotia, lop ear, cup ear, stahl ear, cryptotia, shell ear, Machiavellian ear, elfin ear, bat ear and flop ear also appear in the list of uncommon deformities of external ear.
It denotes surgical and non-surgical techniques for correcting deformities or defects of the auricle (external ear). It is performed on patients who are dissatisfied with the natural shape of the ears or when an injury has deformed the normal shape.
Surgical Correction
The goal of otoplasty is to set back the ears in such a way that the angle is normal, the contour appears soft and symmetry between both ears is maintained without any telltale signs of surgery. The correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold by antihelical fold manipulations and to reduce enlarged conchal cartilage by conchal alteration. Antihelical fold is manipulated by suturing techniques, incisions, anterior controlled abrasions or a combination of them. Conchal alteration is done by suturing and excision techniques. Incisions are generally made on the back side of ear where it can be hidden well. If incisions are necessary in the front of the ear, they are made within the folds to hide them. Patients prone to scarring problems such as keloidal tendencies are advised about the possible complications arising out of surgery. A child with protruding ears is physically strong enough to undergo surgery at 10 years of age. There is no rigid rule about when the surgery should be performed but 4 years is seen as a reasonable age. Surgery is done commonly under general anaesthesia and rarely under local anaesthesia. It is done as a day care procedure, but young patients and patients who are not cooperative enough may need three days’ admission. In some deformities with ear cartilage deficiencies, the cartilage has to be supplemented from the rib or the normal ear on the opposite side. This cartilage has to be sculpted to the required shape based on the template designed from the normal ear pre-operatively; if both ears are affected, then the template is taken from a normal ear of someone from the same age group as the patient. This cartilage harvest does not cause any deformities in the patient. In the postoperative period, a bulky non compressive dressing is placed for three days and a loose headband is worn for 6 weeks. Complications in otoplasty are not very common. Haematoma, infection and suture dehiscence are rare; one complication that may arise is asymmetry when compared to opposite ear. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 37

ZAPPING AWAY THE ZITS
Dr.Chidambaranathan Homeopathy consultant - Laxmi Homeo Clinic drcheena@gmail.com
Beautiful skin is a blessing. Right from the days of Cleopatra, people have given much importance to complexion and personality. Pimples have always been viewed as obstructions to a smooth skin and thus regarded with trepidation
Y
ou know those days when you are just waiting to step out in your Sunday best and a last minute peek at the mirror reveals a bright red spot in the middle of the right cheek. Pimple outbreaks are quite common, especially among adolescents, but the sight of a zit is enough to dampen the mood.
Adolescent Anxiety
Surprisingly enough, when the tiny red spot makes its debut in their chaotic world of hormones, peer pressure, crushes and heartbreaks, teenagers initially feel happy as they regard pimples as a sign of ‘growing up’, but soon enough the joy gives way to anxiety as the zits leave marks on the face and start recurring frequently. Pimples turn from being the happy harbingers of adolescence to the first offenders of a teenager’s personality causing physical and psychological stress. To get rid of them, teenagers often mask their face with cream, lotions and makeup, blocking the pores of the face and not letting it breathe.
All about Pimples
Pimples are the mild form of acne, a red eruptive skin disorder, mostly occurring in teenagers due to hormonal changes. The pimples usually subside after the age of 23 and rarely persist. It is a superficial infection of the skin forming blisters (papules) which may vary in size, shape, colour, course and effects. Pimples usually occur on the face, sometimes involving the neck, chest, back and upper arms too. It is usually caused by the blockage of skin pores or obliterated, inflamed duct of sebaceous glands in the skin. So pimples are a combination of dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria.
occur in girls. Sometimes, some girls feel pimple is an indicator of periods.
Pimples are the mild form of acne, a red eruptive skin disorder, mostly occurring in teenagers due to hormonal changes. The pimples usually subside after the age of 23 and rarely persist Stages of ACNE
Although adult acne is a common occurrence, adolescents are more prone to pimples. The skin produces excess sebum (for lubrication) during hormonal changes or any bacterial infection. This may be felt as oily material in the face. This excess sebum attracts dust and forms a plug to close the pores of the skin. The acne progresses as inflammatory red spots (papule), blackheads (comedones) or whiteheads, and if it gets deeper, produces boil-like lesions called nodules or cysts. During this period, slight burning, soreness or pricking pain and redness may be present. Normally, It takes approximately 5-8 days to get healed. But if it goes deeper, it may even take 15- 20 days to resolve. After the lesion heals, scars may form as permanent marks as evidence for pimples incursion. Bacteria are the common culprit for all forms of pimples.
CAUSES OF PIMPLES
Science is not yet so developed as to pinpoint the exact cause and to rule out the same. But some common circumstances where pimples erupt are: • Hormonal changes - Occurring during puberty, menstrual periods, pregnancy, the start or stoppage of the use of birth control pills generally aggravates pimples. The male sex hormone testosterone (also found in women) triggers the sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum, making the skin greasy which in turn causes pimples. Hormonal changes occur in both sexes but predominately 40 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
• Bacteria - The most common pimple causing bacteria are Propionibacterium acne, Corynebacterium acne, Staphylococcus albus and Pityrosporon ovale. • Food and intakes - Oily, fatty, spicy and fast foods, pastries, chocolates, nuts and milk products have been found to increase sebum production and thus pimples. • Environment - Increased exposure to ultraviolet rays of the Sun and to environmental irritants such as pollution and high humidity can also cause and increase pimple incidences. • Hereditary factors - It is often found to run in families. • Physical and mental stress – Stress may aggravate the condition for a flare up. • Cosmetics - Greasy cosmetics stick to the skin and form a plug in pore causing pimples. • Infection- Dental sepsis and Sinusitis sometimes cause pimples.
Prevention is Better
The secret to pimple prevention lies in keeping the skin clean from dirt, allergens, bacteria or viruses. Simple washing usually helps in maintenance of clear skin by removing germs.
Do
• Wash your skin at least 3 times a day • Steaming is the best to open the pores of the skin and to keep it fresh • After exercise wash sweat immediately to wipe off salty deposition
Take
• Adequate amount of water to keep your body hydrated • Fresh fruits and vegetables for healthy skin and better healing
Avoid
• Washing face with strong chemical soap • Picking or squeezing or peeling the papule; it will cause scarring • Exposure to hot sun • Excessive application of powder directly to face (it is better to rub the powder in the hands and apply gently and mildly.) • Poor quality cosmetic and make up products • Over moisturizing the skin • Food with high content of fat like chocolate, nuts, cheese, chips, oily foods, fast-foods
Homeopathic Approach
Treating skin disorders to get a complete cure is usually a very tough process, since it is the outermost part of the body and often gets exposed to irritants or pollutants or frictions. Also recurrences are very common. And in case of pimples, the habit of picking, pinching, rubbing also hinders
the cure process and adds to the infection and scars. The earlier you treat pimples, the speedier and more complete is the recovery and without any scars. Homoeopathic treatment can give permanent relief from recurrent pimples. All forms of pimples are due to an internal disorder, so the usage of external application alone won’t yield permanent results, since it usually just soothes, suppresses the condition and leaves the skin prone to thickening. The tendency of eruptions is in the body, not on the face alone, so it is better to go for internal treatment also to combat the recurrences.
ACNE Medicines
Medicines commonly used for acne are Acid nit, Anti crud, Bacillinum, Beri Beri Aq, Carbo animalis, Calc carb, Graphites, Hepar sulph, Kali Brom, Lycopodium, Nat mur, oleum jac, Pulsatilla, Pyrogen, Staphysagria, Silicea, Sulphur, Thuja, etc. These medicines should be taken under the advice and diagnosis of a qualified homoeopath
There are no magical instant cures. The pimples will slowly come down in occurrence, size, intensity and duration. Internal homoeopathic medicines are often the best natural option to stop the recurrence of acne by raising natural resistance towards it without side-effects. If suppressed just with ointments, external applications or steroids, they fade away immediately but bounce back with vengeance. After taking homoeopathic medicine, the disease does not disappear all of a sudden, but recurs with less intensity and is of short duration without pain. It also heals fast and finally fades. Dimples are oh so cute when they make small grooves in the cheek and make the dimpled darling irresistibly gorgeous. But when these depressions appear on the hips, thighs and buttocks they turn into dimpled devils. Here are some effective ways of getting rid of cellulite Dr. Arvind Maharaj Cosmetic Surgeon - Chennai Plastic Surgery pmarvindmaharaj@gmail.com 42 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
T
he perception of human beauty, particularly of women, has undergone a vast change over the millennia. In the bygone era, curvaceous voluptuousness was seen as the epitome of beauty but in the modern age, a well toned no-fat figure is considered perfect. This change in perception has led to a desire to reduce weight drastically. The loss of subcutaneous fat has resulted in the pronounced appearance of blemishes of the skin. The most common and most widely publicized phenomenon is that of cellulite.
Causes of Dimpling
Cellulite has a degenerative and evolutional effect on the subcutaneous tissue. Cellulite is considered as a series of events characterized by abnormal fat cell deposition under the skin, collection of fluid in between these cells (extra cellular spaces), leading to secondary changes in the fibres of connective tissues and their consequent scarring and retraction which results in dimpling. It is mainly observed on the buttock and on the lower limbs of women. The main manifestations of clinical cellulite are: • Flaccid “mattress-like” skin, with multiple depressions and some elevations, caused by irregular retraction of the skin, forming a surface where protuberances and depressed areas alternate. • “Orange peel” skin due to the tumefaction of the epidermis and dilation of follicular pores. The process almost always starts in puberty, affecting particularly the lower limbs. Other triggers are pregnancy, periods of sexual dissatisfaction, lack of human or family understanding in combination with an altered lifestyle, wrong diet and intestinal dysfunctions. Very few women above 18 years of age are totally free from some form of cellulite.
Classification of Cellulite Degree / Stage 0
There is no alteration to the skin surface.
Degree / Stage 1
The skin of the affected area is smooth while standing or lying down, but undulations on the skin surface can be seen on pinching the skin or during muscle contraction.
Degree / Stage 2
The ‘‘orange peel’’ or ‘‘mattress’’ appearance is evident when standing, without the use of any manipulation (skin pinching or gluteus muscle contraction).
Degree / Stage 3
Presence of alterations described in second degree or stage II, plus presence of raised and depressed areas and nodules. Though establishing a diagnosis of cellulite is almost always by clinical examination, a few blood tests and at times a few imaging studies are done to rule out other conditions. It should always be borne in mind that ineffective or hardly effective aesthetic treatments have three inescapable consequences: clinical damage, aesthetic injury and, more frequently, serious psychological damage.
Various Terms Describing Cellulite
• PEFS: PanniculopatiaEdematoFibroSclerotica (edematofibroscleroticdermo-lipodermic pathology) • Nodular liposclerosis • Celluliticdermohypodermosis • Sclerotic-fibrous-edematous panniculopathy • Panniculosis of the dermis • Cellulitichypodermosis • Gynoidlipodystrophy • Hydrolipodystrophy • Herniation of the fat with hypodermic tension bands

Fundamental here is acceptance that cellulite is not a female whim or something considered unsightly, but a real disorder, or rather, different disorders that represent aesthetic pathologies that must be cared for from a medical and cosmetic point of view Therapeutic Strategy
Once clinical diagnosis is complete, a therapy aimed at a gradual recovery of the different aesthetic tissue disorders can be devised. The therapy of cellulite is a multi pronged modality which combines • Systemic Medications • Local Medical Therapy (Topical Applications) • Topical Procedures • Surgical Modalities For most patients, the most effective therapy is one which is a combination of all these modalities. Systemic medications involve the use of tablets that are aimed at reducing the fluid, and resultant fibrosis in the extracellular spaces of the skin. These include: • Agents that increase microvascular flow • Agents that reduce lipogenesis and promote lipolysis • Agents that restore the normal structure of the dermal and subcutaneous tissue • Agents that prevent or destroy free-radical formation 44 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
Local medical therapy involve the application and massaging in the skin (mesotherapy) of topical oils, liquids or gels with properties similar to the systemic medications. The third method is that of using certain machines and machine aided procedures to reduce cellulite. The most common ones being • Endermologie • Beautytek • Triactive These techniques involve using the specific machines on the surface of the skin over multiple sittings to remove the underlying fluid, dissolve the fat and improve the skin. The final part of the treatment armamentarium is surgery. It includes: • Liposculpting This is a refined form of liposuction done with fine cannullaes (less than 2mm in size). The aim of the surgery is to remove all the small localized fat pockets and break the tight retracting fibrous band that result in the peau de orange appearance.
• Subcision This is a procedure of localized release done using needles. • Carboxytherapy This involves the injection of carbon dioxide gas in the subcutaneous plane over multiple sittings. • Lipolysis This is done by injecting medicine which causes dissolution of the localized fat pockets. The therapy for each person is planned to meet the individual’s needs. The therapy usually extends for a period varying from a few weeks to months during which multiple sittings of the treatment procedures are done, the person is reevaluated, new procedures added and a lot of additional lifestyle modifications are advised to attain the desired effect. Fundamental here is acceptance that cellulite is not a female whim or something considered unsightly, but a real disorder, or rather, different disorders that represent aesthetic pathologies that must be cared for from a medical and cosmetic point of view.
DR. SATISH C VYAS
MORE THAN A SURGEON His eyes are sharp as are his words when he says, with a passion, he absolutely abhors two sentences: “I don’t have time,” and “I am tired.” Multifaceted cosmetic surgeon Dr. Satish Vyas tells Ameeta Agnihotri about his profession, passion and unending zest for life Dr.Satish C Vyas Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeon, Chennai Plastic Surgery bhagwansatish@gmail.com “I did not want to wait till I became sixty to do all that I wanted to do,” says Dr. Satish C Vyas, Cosmetic Surgeon and mentor to many. His silver beard becomes him as his well kept tall, wiry frame houses more than a Cosmetic Surgeon. For he is a painter, sculptor, singer and writer and when the fancy takes him, Dr. Vyas sits at a machine to tailor garments.
Family First
During his 30s, after he qualified to be a doctor, Dr. Vyas realized he wanted to do everything his heart desired the moment the desire was felt, instead of waiting till he was retired. “Spending time with my family was also a priority. I worked for 20 hours or less each week.” The only disadvantage of this turned out to be less money. “But otherwise, everything else is an advantage. I thought that will be Ok.” His wife and two children, of course love that he spent more time with them, being there for his children, as they grew up. Instead of regretting not having spent enough time with them after they had grown up and moved out to follow their dream. With that clarity firmly in place, he found himself to be productive in anything he ever did. “For me work is not ‘work’. It is fun. I get money in exchange,” Dr. Vyas says.
Of Prejudices and Skin Colour
His attitude is transparent, and his confidence, heartening. Because, Dr. Vyas is a sought after Cosmetic Surgeon in the US, very good at what he does, irrespective of what it is. Whether it is painting, sculpting, singing or tailoring, he gives back to society in more ways than one. Among his charitable work are his frequent visits to India. The country really needs people like him, for when here he performs free plastic surgeries in rural areas, on people who need it. Back from a recent visit to Madhya Pradesh, he shows us proof of how much his work is needed there. On a blank wall pictures come alive. Those sitting around gasp in shock. For right there in front of us is an image of a woman whose face has been disfigured brutally because of burns that have been inflicted on her. Some of us close our eyes in pain. When we open them again, the image has changed. Same woman, this time, she’s smiling. Her face is much better and yes, there’s a world of difference. “Nowhere else in the world is such a thing done to women,” he says and shakes his head ruefully. Changing gears but still remaining on the same track, he talks
about the skin lightening obsession that we Indians have. “Look at this business of lightening skin cream. Nonsense, as far as I’m concerned! If you are dark skinned, what is wrong with it? But that is something that is engrained in the culture of this country – lighter skin is more desirable. Or maybe we are always trying to get what we don’t have. The white skinned people are trying to tan their skins to make themselves look darker,” he says. Looks are always a case of wanting what you don’t have. The straight haired get it curled, the curly haired get theirs straightened. “It is probably a deep seated part of our nature, that we are always trying to have what we don’t have.”
Handling Unrealistic Expectations
Often patients go to him with pictures of celebrities, and ask him to make them look similar. Dr. Vyas hears them out, and gently bring their expectations to ground level. Nobody can look like anybody else. Each of us is born with a unique personality, and preserving that is of utmost importance. Explaining this to patients can be a challenge. A Cosmetic Surgeon’s job is not easy. Sometimes he has to don the psychologist’s role and hearing the patients out through their insecurities is part of the daily routine. Sometimes, patients opt to go in for cosmetic surgery because of pressures from outside sources, like a spouse or a boyfriend. If that is the case, the end result is more insecurity and dissatisfaction. “Cosmetic procedures can be irreversible. So, it is very important to know who they are doing this for. It has to be for themselves,” Dr. Vyas insists. Many times, patients get so happy with the results they see in their appearance, that they fall in love with the Cosmetic Surgeon. “Well, my patients like me a lot,” he chuckles, “but I’ve never experienced any of them falling in love with me.” He always maintains a friendly distance so they understand where the line is drawn. We end our talk with trends, something like the top of the charts, of course, there has to be something that everybody likes to get done. “The commonest surgeries in the US,” he says, while I hold my breath, wondering if it is what I think it is, and let it out when he continues, “is liposuction. Second in line is breast augmentation, then nose surgery, eyelid surgery, followed by abdominoplasty and other things.” On that note, it is time for him to leave, to meet and change yet another life. Extrinsic Aging
A number of extrinsic, or external, factors often act together with the normal aging process to prematurely age our skin. Most premature aging is caused by sun exposure. Others include repetitive facial expressions, gravity, sleeping positions and smoking. The Sun damage or photo damage: Without protection from the sun’s rays, just a few minutes of exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin: freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, a blotchy complexion, actinic keratoses (thick wart-like, rough, reddish patches of skin).

While you cannot stop or even slow down the intrinsic aging process, you can prevent signs of premature aging by protecting your skin from the sun, quitting smoking and eliminating facial exercises Causes of Aging Skin
Before you contemplate any treatment it is important to understand the different signs of aging. There are two distinct types of aging. • Aging caused by the genes we inherit is called intrinsic (internal) aging. • Extrinsic (external) aging is caused by environmental factors, such as exposure to the sun’s rays.
Intrinsic Aging
Intrinsic aging, also known as the natural aging process, is a continuous process that normally begins in our mid-20s. Within the skin, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a little less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and turnover of new skin cells may 48 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
decrease slightly. While these changes usually begin in our 20s, the signs of intrinsic aging are typically not visible for decades. They include: • Fine wrinkles • Thin and transparent skin • Loss of underlying fat, leading to hollowed cheeks and eye sockets as well as noticeable loss of firmness on the hands and neck • Dry skin • Grey hair • Hair loss • Unwanted hair Genes control how quickly the normal aging process unfolds. Some notice those first grey hairs in there 20s; others do not see greying until their 40s.
• Avoiding deliberate tanning, including use of indoor tanning devices. • Staying out of the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest. • Wearing protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves, when outdoors during the day. • Applying sunscreen year round. Sunscreen should be broad spectrum (offers UVA and UVB protection) and have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before going outdoors to all skin that will be exposed. It should be reapplied after sweating or being in water.
Options to Explore
A number of treatments are available for both the types of aging. Injectable procedures are suitable for people with busy lifestyles who do not want the inconvenience of a long recovery, giving the skin a smooth and contoured look. Most people look to get rid of wrinkles. A wrinkle is a ridge or crease on the surface of the skin. Anti-wrinkle treatments or anti aging treatments are non-surgical cures.
Botox
Among the treatments available perhaps the most popular one is Botox. Botox Cosmetic is an injectable drug, but it is not a wrinkle filler. Instead of filling the wrinkle, it keeps muscles from tightening so the wrinkles don’t show as much. It is an FDA approved procedure wherein purified protein is injected which blocks nerve impulses for the time being and weakens the nerve muscles that cause the wrinkle. This treatment is most commonly used for getting rid of frowns, forehead lines and crow's feet.
The Treatment: The treatment process for cosmetic Botox is safe and simple. Before the procedure your doctor will discuss the areas you want to target and tiny injections will be inserted into those areas. This usually involves targeting the areas around the eyes, nose and mouth, as this is where wrinkles and fine lines tend to develop. The procedure is quick and the injections should not be painful. When Botox is used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), injections are inserted into the skin of the armpits. If Botox is used to treat chronic migraines, the injections are inserted into the forehead, temples and the muscles at the back of the neck. The procedure is usually very quick and in most cases treatment time is less than 20 minutes. This will depend on the
number of injections. It is not necessary to have anaesthetic before Botox treatment and pain should be minimal. After treatment: One of the major advantages of Botox is that there is little or no recovery time, and most people feel fine and can return to their normal life immediately. Results: Results of the treatment vary according to the individual, but frown lines and wrinkles appear reduced within just a few days. The results of the treatment should last around 3-6 months and the procedure can be repeated after this time. As the treatment results begin to wear off the lines will start to reappear, so repeat treatment is required to restore a youthful complexion.
Safe to Repeat: It is safe to have repeat Botox injections and most people have treatment every 4-6 months to keep the results ‘topped-up’. The more treatments you have the longer the results will last, as the muscles responsible for forming creases and frown lines will gradually weaken. However, excessive treatment can cause the body to produce antibodies against Botox, which will reduce its effectiveness. Side Effects: Botox is generally considered to be a very safe procedure, but it is possible for side effects to occur, the main one being headaches. Discuss the pros and cons with a qualified expert in details before you go in for the procedure. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 49
Fillers
Non invasive dermal fillers: As we age, our faces begin to deflate with less collagen and elastin, the magic stuff that gives our skin its supple, youthful look. This leads to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and an overall loss of volume in the mid-face, which can in turn create all sorts of problems, from deep nasolabial folds between the nose and mouth, to hollowed-looking eyes, or sagging jowls. Dermal fillers are an ideal way to address the creases, volume loss and hollowing in the skin that occur naturally with age. Dermal fillers can also be used to enhance the volume and shape of the lips, and restore a more youthful appearance to the neck, chest and hands.
As we age, our faces begin to deflate with less collagen and elastin, the magic stuff that gives our skin its supple, youthful look. This leads to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and an overall loss of volume in the mid-face Fillers are made of various types of materials, and some include a combination of products. Some products also contain lidocaine, which numbs the skin at the injection site. The materials used to inject wrinkle filler include Temporary (absorbable) fillers • Collagen injections are made of highly purified cow or human collagen. Collagen is a natural protein that is a major component of skin and other tissues in the body. 50 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
• Hyaluronic acid gel is a protective lubricating gel produced naturally by the body that binds with water to plump the skin. Permanent (non-absorbable) filler • The body does not absorb them. Dermal fillers for lines, creases and folds on the face and around the eyes can be used to: • Add the lost “apple” volume back to your cheeks, diminishing the creases around the mouth and lifting sagging jowls
• Minimize the appearance of nasolabial folds, i.e., smile lines, running from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth • Fill in horizontal lines on forehead and the vertical “11’s” between the eyes • Smooth out the tear troughs running from the inner corners of the eyes down to the mid-cheek • Add lost volume back to the under eye area, reducing the “hollowed out” look • Address the “crow’s feet” around the eye
Thread Lift
A thread lift is another less invasive option. A thread lift can provide results as a face lift, but is quicker, cheaper and, generally all these procedures are referred as “lunchtime facelift”.
A thread lift is another less invasive option. A thread lift can provide results as a face lift, but is quicker, cheaper and, generally all these procedures are referred as “lunchtime facelift" Procedure: A thread lift uses surgical sutures to lift sagging areas of the face and neck. The sutures are threaded under facial tissue with a thin needle. There are barbs located on the thread, which grab and elevate the sagging skin. The thread lift is performed on several different areas of the face. The middle face, brow and lower face all provide desired results with the procedure. Individuals who have a small amount of sagging skin are the best candidates for a thread lift. Thread lifts are often times used in
combination with other procedures. This procedure does not require anaesthesia, doesn’t have incisions, stitches or scarring. The thread lift procedure typically takes only 1 to 2 hours. After Treatment: You may experience some bruising and swelling for about a week following your procedure. Depending on your comfort level, you should be able to return to work the day after your procedure and you can
wear makeup as well. You will need to avoid any facial and be careful of mouth movements and rubbing or applying pressure to your face for the first 3 weeks following your procedure. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, fish oil and other blood thinners for at least a week before all these treatments. Results: The results of a thread lift can be seen right away. You will see a noticeable “lifting” and shaping of the brow, cheek, jowl and neck.

No matter how elaborate the montage, how hectic the preparations and how beautiful the subjects, that decisive click, fleeting, ephemeral, perfectly timed, is all that matters. Here is where the skill of the magician behind the camera becomes paramount. And Karthik Srinivasan definitely knows a thing or two about weaving magic with the camera. The ace photographer on modelling, muses, success mantras and more…
People know you as an acclaimed photographer but you started your career as a model. When and why did you decide to become a model? I came to Chennai to be a cinematographer. I tried my luck at the Film Institute. As I was tall and well built, people there advised me to try my hand at modelling. That is how I decided to take a shot at being a model and gain experience. When did you decide to get behind the camera? My passion has always been cinematography. I may have taken up modelling on people’s advice and since I did not gain admission in the desired institute (to do a course on cinematography), but I was never very keen on modelling or acting. I feel modelling has a short shelf life. Although I did do reasonably well as a model, after a point of time I thought it was time for me to leave the spotlight and leave the field to youngsters so I stepped down and moved on to photography. I found it be an extension of what I had been doing thus far. Were both the journeys smooth sailing or did you have to tackle obstacles? It is not easy to get into the glamour field without contacts and connections, especially for a guy from a small town. So it was tough for me to get started without knowing anyone or having a Godfather to promote me. I had to do a lot of hard work to get campaigns and shoots. Once I got established and made a name for myself though, the journey became easier. 52 | BEAUTY BECAUSE

From conception to execution, what is the story behind Dreeamcast? Were there any challenges along the way? Dreeamcast, I believe, was one of the earliest production houses of its kind; it has been around for 15 years. Its main aim is to try and bridge the gap between Indian and international producers. I try to get international ad filmmakers to India for shoots and vice versa. I try to facilitate things by arranging for the models, props, locations and liaising with other professionals. Through Dreeamcast I made a lot of contacts which have helped me in my work as well. In your field you deal in and with beauty. What is your perception of beauty? The general perception is to equate beauty with fairness, slimness and height. As a photographer I meet all kinds of people and I can vouch for the fact that beauty comes in all sizes, shapes and hues. I am not a doctor or a cosmetic surgeon; I cannot change anyone’s features. I can only highlight the existing features through proper lighting, camera angles and click the best shot. And I believe everyone is beautiful in their own way. Beauty cannot be defined in absolute terms. A 5’10” slim and svelte woman has her own set of attractions but so does a well rounded 4’10” lady. 54 | BEAUTY BECAUSE

What do you feel are the key ingredients that go into the making of a top model? Over the years, modelling has evolved so much that the fixed list of ingredients has become obsolete. Modelling has a lot of segments: fashion, print, television commercials. Fashion choreographers are looking to instil fresh ideas and you can see people from all walks of life on the runway now. That is very refreshing to see. As a photographer, which features in a subject capture your eye the most? I find the eyes very captivating as they express a lot without words. Having worked with some top models and actors, who would you pick as your favourite and why? I am really glad that I have worked with a lot of celebrities but it is really difficult to pinpoint one as the favourite. I like different aspects of different celebs. For instance, Trisha’s smile is very endearing; Deepika (Padukone) has striking eyes.
What is the motivation behind Hits Academy of Photography? When I came to Chennai to be a cinematographer, there was no one to guide me or help me out. I could not intern with anyone, there was just one institute in the whole of South India offering suitable courses. It took me ten years to understand the nuances of the industry. I want to make things easier for upcoming photographers and I feel such an academy will help them as it teaches them all aspects of commercial photography, right from makeup, lights, angles and others. Finally, with your experience, what tips would you offer youngsters aspiring to get a toehold in the glamour industry? Now we are living in an age of instant coffee, instant meals, instant everything. It took me almost fifteen years to build up a network but today youngsters just sit in front of the computer and get connected to people who matter online in fifteen minutes. However, building contacts instantly is not the only part of photography. They have to get acquainted with the camera as well, know it like their best friend. Only then will they realise their dreams. It took me many years to perfect camera angles and I persevered throughout. Patience is a virtue and if they have this virtue they will definitely succeed in life. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 55

When it comes to PRP in aesthetic space, it is all about looking youthful beyond one’s own age, and as naturally as possible. Here’s how it is done:
Yes, PRP does not give your skin the post-Botox looks but certainly a more natural radiance and glow that won’t go unnoticed. It is certainly a treatment of choice in view of the results and also the fact that you are using your body’s natural healing processes
Preparation
Universally, the preferred raw material for a PRP preparation is one’s own blood. Whole blood comprises of rich reservoirs of growth factors, otherwise referred to as platelets, the key players in the rejuvenation process. Simply put, PRP is defined as plasma comprising above – baseline concentration of platelets. Quantities varying from as less as 10 ml to about 120 ml are used, with the final volume varying anywhere between 5 ml and 20 ml. Using special processes like centrifugation, these platelets are separated from the rest of the blood components to the maximum extent and delivered to the site of interest. Thanks to the advent of a number of bedside PRP processing machines like GPS III (Biomet), Magellan (Arteriocyte), Harvest SmartPReP (Harvest Tech) etc. the entire procedure can now be completed in less than an hour.
Administration and mechanism of action
While there is a general awareness, perhaps, that PRP has many functions, the fact remains that the role of PRP is not yet fully understood. It is believed that PRP comprises multiple growth factors, hormones, stabilizers and a variety of bioactive ingredients which synergistically promote a conducive environment.
Skin
Anyone who wishes to minimize loss of volume, fine lines and improve skin texture shall be an ideal candidate for this procedure. Using special techniques, thousands of microscopic channels are created in the skin and PRP is applied topically so that it is absorbed. This induces new collagen synthesis and blood supply which is responsible for plumping of the skin and reversing visible signs of ageing. As a standalone treatment, the preferred route of PRP administration is via inter or sub-dermal injections.
In matters of the skin, PRP is suitable to address: • Crow’s feet • Lip and frown lines • Nasolabial fold (Laugh line) • Cheeks and mid-face • Jaw line • Sagging skin on the neck and face • Acne scars • Back of the hands • Décolletage
Hair
Of late, PRP has gained popularity in hair restoration
procedures – both surgical and non surgical. It has been proven beyond doubt that PRP is capable of reversing miniaturizated hair follicles, the non surgical way. It is believed that growth factors are absorbed by resident stem cells in the bulge area of the hair follicle, eventually improving density and diameter.
PRP is ideal to be used in the following situations:
• Early stages of male pattern hair loss • Miniaturized hair • All stages of female pattern hair loss • Hypotrichosis – fine/reduced hair of eyebrows and beard • Alopecia Areata (Patchy hair loss) • Medication induced hair loss For both skin and hair, the patients are advised a minimum of 2 to 3 sittings at monthly intervals. Yes, PRP does not give your skin the post-Botox looks but certainly a more natural radiance and glow that won’t go unnoticed. It is certainly a treatment of choice in view of the results and also the fact that you are using your body’s natural healing processes. But it is very important to keep in mind that some age related concerns respond well to PRP, while the wiser decisions for the rest would be HA (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers, peels or laser resurfacing. It definitely needs the guidance of a well trained and experienced cosmetic physician/surgeon to help combine the right treatments and steer you on the right path. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 59

lot of diseases today, including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and food intolerances are on the upswing due to faulty eating. However, we would think, “Do we really need a professional to teach us what to eat? Don’t we have the innate knowledge to ascertain our body’s requirement?” All of us are internet savvy and many of us get carried away due to information overload, through the internet, health magazines and other forums. Result: total confusion and havoc as we move from one diet to the next, something like following fashion trends with a different one every season. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 61
Metabolic Wiring
Remember: each of us is metabolically different. One man’s food can be another man’s poison. Examples that demonstrate this are the food intolerances like lactose or gluten where simple food like dairy, wheat, oats, barley and rye create a gamut of health problems. Yes, it is hard for some of us to let go of rotis, oat porridges and whole wheat bread from our daily menu. However, a small paradigm shift is all that is required to accept new foods and make the transition into a whole new body, one that is vibrant with healthy energy.

POLYCYSTIC OVARY
Many adolescent girls are walking around with PCOS these days. 15 year olds are suffering from irregular menstruation, high insulin levels or impaired glucose tolerance, darkening of the neck (acanthosisnigricans) and excessive body fat. It is a vicious cycle – irregular periods result in gaining excess weight which in turn causes hormone fluctuations.
The best way to tackle PCOS is:
• Screening by a qualified physician and taking appropriate medication • Being physically active – yoga or a good mix of cardio and strength training coupled with core strengthening workouts – on a regular basis. Five days a week would show results • Eating right
Eating for PCOS
Stabilizing blood sugar levels is the key factor to assist weight reduction. Here’s how: • Consume 6-7 small meals and beverages • Avoid refined cereals, excess breads, noodles, pasta; rice and rice based dishes like idli, dosa, pongal, appam, upma can spike blood sugar levels because they lack adequate fibre. High GI grains or millets are the best options to make your idli / dosa/ upma / pongal nutritious. The fibre load, micronutrients and crude fibre is a treat for your insides • Remember, plain simple sugars, soft drinks, juices with sugar, cold coffee, granitas, doughnuts, thick breads and

maida based dishes feed the PCOS • Drink 2.5-3 litres of fluids per day. Water is a great cleanser and a medium for all physiological functions. Ensure you keep the internal environment spic and span • Glycemically balanced meals are the best. Plan meals around 1 part high fibre grain + 2 parts fibre rich vegetable plus 1 part protein rich food. Ensure 1:2 ratio for cereal:vegetable. In fact you can go on a NO GRAIN diet for 6 days a week and include grains ONCE a week . Don’t panic, it’s easy to get carbs from dried beans (kabulichana, rajma, black dal, chick peas, yellow dals), starchy vegetables and fruits.

It is the ability of a food to raise the blood sugar levels. Foods like white bread and table sugar have a score of 100 and quickly increase sugar levels • Porridges have a high GI since they are finely powdered and once cooked they are easy to digest. This is perfectly fine when one has fever where easy to digest foods are best suited, but otherwise, it is best avoided. • White bread is high on the GI on its own. However, make it into a sandwich with vegetable slices, boiled chicken and lettuce leaves. Presto! The GI automatically becomes moderate or lower due to the presence of protein and fibre. • Lean meat, eggs, mushroom, lentils, dried beans, nuts, dairy products, whey protein, casein are all excellent choices for protein intake. Each meal or snack should include these in optimal quantities. • People with high insulin levels might need to stay off fruits since fructose levels can really influence their rate of weight loss. Up the vegetable intake instead. • Healthy fats from nuts, organic ghee and butter, grass fed cow’s milk, country hen eggs, free range hens, coconut oil, olive oil, cold pressed oils are add-ons for a wholesome 64 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
meal. Limit the intake of fats to 5 teaspoons per day but choose from the list above.
• Get enough sunlight, walk those 10,000 steps. Sleep by 10 pm for at least 7 hours. Bring those stress levels down and you will find your weight reducing and PCOS becoming in control. PCOS can be controlled with a sensible eating plan, regular workouts and medication under professional guidance. • Yoga works beautifully in stabilizing hormonal imbalances as it influences the neuro-endocrine system. The hardcore gym workouts coupled with cardio is a great way to improve insulin resistance and reduce excess body fat. • Eating right is not rocket science. But, food definitely needs to be customized for individual needs. Making a shift in eating habits needs a strong purpose and will. Determination, persistence and perseverance are essentials in the path of weight loss when other medical complications are present.
The Diet that
)Re(SHAPED MY LIFE Testimonial
5
½ years of marriage seemed relatively a short period in comparison to the mighty 15 kg that I had gained since then. I have given it different names – post marriage hormonal changes, depression, stress, whatever crossed my mind, when people advised me about my physical appearance. Not that I was not trying everything I could behind the scenes to shed those extra kilos, may be just that Dr. Karthik had not spelt out the “you should try HCG” as yet. Constantly carried away by witnessing his liposuction procedures, I casually remember asking Dr. Karthik if I could be an ideal candidate for liposuction to do away with the extra flab. Trust me, I wished to hear, “I don’t think you need to lose weight”, so that I could just tell people the doctor feels that I look just perfect the way I am. But then, it turned out otherwise. He opened up a new option of HCG to my disappointment. I told him I wanted to know more (though I did not want to, for nothing was going to work for me) hoping I would be able to refer someone to him for the treatment. He sent me to Ms. Theepa Karthik for diet counselling. By the time I peeped into the list, my mind went bonkers and I hardly paid any attention to what she was saying. “I am already hypoglycaemic and diet makes me sick,” I told her. She was trying to convince me that HCG will help me handle the hunger through the diet by mobilizing fat and fighting fatigue. I told her that I needed sometime and am worried about side effects though she convinced me that there would not be any. And one fine day, I was revisiting Chennai Plastic on professional grounds and suddenly expressed to Ms. Theepa that I am in the mood to opt for this treatment. Something told me it was going to work or I felt I needed to at least try it to know that it doesn’t work. I told her, “Please get me my first injection before I change my mind,” and even before I finished saying that, one of her staff nurses held out the syringe to me and so this time there was no going back on the decision. Day 1 and 2 went off in busily hogging on all those sumptuous
things that I generally don’t have even on normal days. Day 3 turned out to be a nightmare when I had to make coffee for all at home but for myself. By Day 5, I almost buried my tongue alive for it was living dead. But one small glimpse at a mirror accidentally told me that I could see a small change in my structure, not that size zero kind of figure, but at least something that is not making me look awfully bloated. On Day 6, I felt my tongue was getting accustomed to those no – milk diets and the protein filled lunch. And from there on till Day 26, I have seen myself shed flab and reshape gracefully. By the time I was halfway through the diet, the weight loss dream almost became secondary as more than the flab shedding the way I felt from within was refreshing and boosted my confidence tremendously. Instead of those diets that make you feel deprived and miserable, I liked this one where I was eating quality food that I might have otherwise not had in my entire life. What seemed once an intimidating task has now become a healthy habit. I can now work out with ease and that matters a lot to me. There is not a day in the 26 day long diet and after that I have not heartily thanked Dr. Karthik and Ms. Theepa. I am convinced that their approach to losing weight was the answer that I had been searching for all my adult life, but it took a few more additional kilos to finally get sick enough and opt for a HCG. I don’t know how much Chennai Plastic would be advocating HCG, but I have been advocating it heavily to all those to whom it can make a difference just the way it did in my life. I love the following quote: “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take”. I am glad I don’t have to regret anymore and my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Karthik Ram for giving me that chance. Most of the traditional methods like waxing, shaving, tweezing, plucking, threading are not only sheer torture to sit through, the results are agonisingly short lived too. When first described some 7 years ago, laser hair removal created controversy. As the technology matured, it became popular not only as a safe, noninvasive, pain-free procedure, but also because it is effective, rapid, easy and affordable. The statistics are in its favour too: a single treatment can reduce hair by 10–40%; three treatments by 30–70%; and repeated treatments by as much as 90%. These results persist for as long as 12 months. All these factors explain the quantum jump that laser and light-based hair removal technology has seen in the last decade. Of course, like any other treatment laser hair removal is also not without its negatives. Most complications are generally temporary. Diffuse and perifollicular cutaneous erythema (reddening of the skin around the hair)
and pigmentary changes are the most common adverse side effects.
Hair Biology
A hair follicle consists of three regions: the infundibulum (upper segment), isthmus (middle segment) and hair bulb (lower segment). On an average, the bulb is approximately 4 mm in depth from the surface of the skin requiring a deep penetration by the laser lightbased systems. Human hair grows in a cyclic pattern. The cycle consists of a growth or anagen phase followed by intermediate degradation of a portion of the follicle, known as the catagen phase and then by a resting period when no growth occurs – the telogen phase. The anagen duration varies greatly depending on age, season, gender, body site, hormones and underlying genetic susceptibilities. It is during the anagen phase that melanin production occurs
and becomes part of the growing follicle. It is also in the anagen phase that damage can affect the structure theoretically responsible for hair generation. To achieve long-term hair removal, it is essential to destroy the structures that are responsible for hair growth: the bulge and bulb, which is what the treatment seeks to achieve through a photothermal reaction that destroys the hair follicle while sparing the skin.
Types of Laser
The laser source may be continuous mode or pulsed. The former emits a continuous stream of light as long as the medium is excited, resulting in heating and vaporization of the target tissue. Alternatively, a pulsed laser emits light only in short amounts, which may vary from nanoseconds to as long as seconds. Diode Lasers (800–1000 nm) for hair removal were cleared by the FDA. Because of the longer wavelength, the active cooling and the longer pulse widths, individuals with darker skin can be treated more safely with this system. Although numerous lasers are available for laser assisted hair removal, their use in individuals with dark skin type presents many challenges due to competition from epidermal melanin. The ideal candidate for hair removal is a light-skinned individual with dark terminal hair. Dark skinned patients with high epidermal melanin content are prone to adverse side effects ranging from immediate pain and pigmentary disturbances to scarring. Consult a qualified expert before you go in for the procedure so that you can educate yourself on the positives and negatives of laser hair removal. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 67

HOT HAPPENING She is the last word in glamour. Draw up a list of sensuous divas of South Indian cinema and her name is bound to figure among the top few. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 69
70 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
Ever since you made your debut in South Indian cinema, glamour and Namitha have been synonymous. Did you ever consciously work towards earning the tag of ‘glamour queen’ or did the tag automatically get attached to you? I never considered myself hot or sexy at all; in fact, quite the opposite. I certainly did not think of myself as an exotic beauty. But I think the roles I chose and the songs I did made me get tagged automatically. You won the Miss Surat title in 1998. What motivated you to participate in a beauty pageant at a time when society was still quite conservative and cloistered? Surat was a very small town at that time and I would perhaps never have taken such a step on my own. It was my mother who put my name in the competition. She is an incredibly beautiful lady. When she was young she was very keen to get into the glamour field, but she was not allowed to do so as her parents (my grandparents) were very, very conservative. So she decided right then, “If and when I have a daughter, I will make sure she can make a name in this field.” And she did. You followed up your first success with a very commendable third spot in the Miss India contest in 2001. What was the experience like? In a way, I was still a child when that happened. In fact, I was one of the youngest participants. I was not fluent in English and basically very raw so I did not expect to succeed at anything at all. Yet I ended up winning a couple of subtitles: the Sony Viewers’ Choice title and the Cyber Queen 1st Runner Up title. Recently, you were coined the “Ideal Indian Beauty” by a Japanese TV Channel. How does it feel to go truly international and strengthen India’s position on the beauty map? It was again a surprise when I heard that piece of news. I could not believe it as Indian cinema per se is full of incredibly beautiful women and for me to have won the award, I was quite delirious. I felt very honoured at the same time. It has now almost become a cliché that the next step for beauty queens is the silver screen. What do you feel about the view? To this I would say, ‘to each her own’. Although there is a tendency to generalise, I feel nowadays women from various walks of life are choosing to enter diverse fields and it is the same with beauty queens as well. Even among those who choose the arc lights, not all want to be silver screen heroines. Some choose television serials, others cut music albums. Once they gain experience on the international level, they can do anything their heart desires. It provides a huge platform for them. Yet another done to death remark is that models cannot act. Having successfully transitioned from modelling to the movies, do you think it is high time we buried this cliché? I don’t know what to say to that. Maybe there is a tiny grain of truth in the remark. As far as I am concerned, right from when I was eight or nine I have been on stage. That experience has certainly helped me and I have been
able to make a smooth transition, but there are many who are paralysed by stage fright. I think it will take a lot more models to prove the theory wrong. Had it always been a childhood dream to act or did some particular trigger set off the ambition? Oh, I always wanted to be an actress. I remember the first time I voiced my ambition was when I was four. Of course, I did not know what I wanted to do was called acting. I just innocently told my mother, “I want to go inside the TV.”

Even when the size zero fad was raging I never jumped onto that particular bandwagon. I don’t want to be size zero ever; I just want to be nicely curvaceous. Countless beautiful faces have graced Indian movies over the decades. Who is your ultimate matinee idol and why? I admire Sridevi and Rekha equally. And if you had to choose an international movie star who symbolises grace and beauty who would it be? It has to Marilyn Monroe, for sure. What is the one main difference between Namitha in reel life and Namitha in real life? In the movies, Namitha has done a lot of bad things; she is evil sometimes. In real life, however, Namitha is a very gentle and warm hearted person. I cannot wish evil even upon my enemies. How do you unwind after a hectic day of shoot? When I come home I play with my shih tzu, Chocolate. He is an absolutely adorable pooch and helps me relax. I like watching TV as well. You are no stranger to the fact that celebrities are always the hot targets for the paparazzi, the gutter press and the rumour mills. How do you cope with the negative attention? I just take it as part of my job and don’t let it bother me much.
You have made a mark in movies in all four South Indian languages. That is a rare achievement indeed. From among the movies you have acted in, if you have to pick your favourites, which ones would you opt for? I cherish all the characters I have portrayed because each has her unique qualities. I especially love my role as Poovu in Pachchak Kuthira because I think I have done outrageously good acting in the movie (smiles). I could not believe it was me who had given such a good performance. In Billa, I liked the way I looked: the dresses I wore, the hairstyles I sported, they all became me. You stand tall and elegant at close to 6 feet. DONNING MANY HATS KARUN RAMAN Fashion Choreographer naachatkaruns@yahoo.co.in
From dance choreography to fashion choreography he has made a lot of celebs move to his tunes. In the midst of all this, he also found the time to judge beauty pageants and to follow his passion for designing. A tête-à-tête with Karun Raman
What got you hooked on to fashion choreography? I started out as a dance choreographer and my passion for fashion started from there. While coordinating the costumes, music and themes for dance shows I developed a love for all things fashion. I started working backstage in various fashion weeks and gained in confidence. From there on, it was a matter of time before I moved on to fashion choreography almost completely. Who are your role models in this field? I am very fond of Mark Robinson. I follow his work a lot. What are the aesthetics you keep in mind while choreographing fashion shows? I am very focussed on the fact that I have very good models, the venue, a good guest list, the ambience of the evening and the entertainment X factor. Matching the moves to the music and keeping onlookers hooked can be quite a challenge. Given the great response that your shows garner, what are the ingredients to a successful show? It’s nothing really (smiles)! I just pray to God before the start of a show! Rehearsals are very important, I feel. I also think I am lucky I get to work with great models. Being thorough professionals, they walk in sync to the music. We as the viewers get to see the polished and suave end product, but the scene backstage must be chaotic. What challenges have you personally faced? Thankfully, I have not faced any drama so far. I do come across stray instances where some model tries to stir up a small amount of trouble but nothing that has gotten out of hand. I am pretty happy with whoever I have worked with till now. Your attempt to choreograph the fashion marathon last year was really unique. Could you walk us through the experience? It was very inspiring to see an institute (Dreamzone, School of Creative Studies) come up with such a unique idea. They offered me the proposal to choreograph the show.
Showcasing 500 + designs in 80 + different themes was a very daunting task but I have always loved challenges. I believe it was a good attempt. You also design as a hobby. Do you think choreographing for your own designs comes easy for you as compared to choreographing for other designers’ ensembles? No, I don’t think there is any difference. Whether I choreograph for my designs or for others’, I put in the same amount of focus and work into every show. Which celebrity do you feel carries off your designs perfectly? I think Rochelle Rao carries off my designs very well. As a man with an inherent love for designs, your personal style statement has always been very bindaas, very flamboyant. Do you feel men are finally ditching monochrome and taking to colours? Oh, yes! Men have become very open about their style preferences and have embraced colours. Not only on the fashion runways, even in everyday walks of life, men have taken a strong liking to colours and have started dressing really well. You have judged several beauty pageants in Chennai. What is the key ingredient you look for in a beauty queen? Beauty does not just mean a pretty face. Brains are equally important. And the beauty has to be holistic. The right attitude, some amount of grace and elegance will make a beauty queen befitting of the crown. And finally, how do you relax outside of work or is work the relaxation for you? Admittedly, work is relaxation. Apart from work, I enjoy watching films, especially comedy movies. I am a great fan of Shah Rukh Khan so I am into Bollywood movies as well. I travel a lot. Paris is my favourite destination, so is Mumbai. And I love entertaining friends at home.

HAIR APPARENT Hair is such an emotionally provoking topic and so close to our hearts that every small thing to do with it bothers us. Most of us are very attached to our tresses and it pains us to see clumps of it clinging to our combs daily, but now it may be possible to prevent severe hair loss and keep our lustrous locks in place Dr. Talat Salim Trichologist doctor@scalpandhairclinic.com

he hair is the richest ornament of women, and even men. Hair has a strong correlation to our confidence and self esteem while normal hair represents youth and virility. Balding represents aging and very few are able to accept this gracefully. 75% of patients who suffer from hair loss also suffer from loss of self confidence and low self-esteem.
Decoding AGA
There are different causes of hair loss. It is very important to diagnose the cause of hair loss, in order to receive the right treatment. With proper investigation and treatment it is possible to arrest hair loss if treatment is started early. In certain cases of severe hair loss, treatment can delay the thinning of hair and balding. In patients with a family history of hair loss (Androgenetic Alopecia or AGA), intensive care can delay balding, but it is a tedious and almost lifelong treatment. AGA is a genetically determined disorder and is progressive through the gradual conversion of terminal hair into intermediate hairs and finally to BEAUTY BECAUSE | 77
vellus hairs. In AGA, patients have a reduction in the terminal-to-vellus hair ratio, normally about 4:1. Following miniaturization of the follicles, fibrous tracts remain. This condition has a typical patterned distribution of hair involving hair line recession and vertex balding. Women normally exhibit a diffuse hair thinning over the frontal areas. Drug therapies specifically approved for treating AGA are limited. The conventionally used medication like Finasteride, Minoxidil and normal therapies although beneficial, pose undesired side effects. Cell Mediated Treatments for AGA are still in phase 1 or 2 trials. The cells are cultured and the culture supernatant is processed to produce a compound rich in hair growth promoting factors such as wnt proteins for use in treatment.
Treatment Choices
There are various methods of correcting the problem of hair loss, once it has begun. A suitable treatment is chosen depending upon the extent of hair loss, ability to maintain the continuity of the treatment and cost considerations. As a reaction to this situation, dietary supplements contain natural compounds are playing a more and more important role in treatment of AGA. Treatment is usually started with oral intake of vitamins, biotins, amino acids, caffeine, melatonin, copper complexes, minerals and oral antiandrogenic or oestrogen promoting herbs like Saw-palmetto, green tea extract and grape seed extract.
Grape Gain
Grape seed extract is highly active on the androgen receptor. Since androgen receptor plays an essential role in AGA, grape seed extracts hold an important potential for treatment of hair loss through local androgenic stimulation. The main components of grape seed extract are the monomeric phenolic compounds, catechin, epicatechin and epicatechin gallate. The effect of grape seed proanthocyanidins to promote hair follicle proliferation is great and possesses remarkable hair-cycleconverting activity from telogen phase to the anagen phase. 78 | BEAUTY BECAUSE

Green Goodness
Green tea has a 20 times higher anti-oxidation power compared to vitamin-C. The EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and ECG (epicalechin gallale) present in green tea are inhibitors of the type 1 iso enzyme of 5α- reductase, which is involved in male – pattern baldness by its activity on the androgen receptor (AR) at the level of the scalp. The inhibitory effect on the androgen receptor is even more potent in conjunction with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). The desirable effect of these medicines are not yet entirely elucidated, however supplementing the diet with these extracts does not pose any health threat and it is safe
and effective for long period of administration.
Lotions and Potions
Application of topical lotion like Minoxidil and protein serum can help. Procedures like mesotheraphy, in which injections of medicines and vitamins are given with a gun or derma rollers on the scalp, can also prove effective.
Platelet Power
Currently gaining popularity is the PRP (platelet rich plasma) isolated from whole blood. Platelets have multiple growth factors associated with them as well as other potentially stimulatory mediators.
Injections of stem cell are newer treatments available which aim at providing pluripotent stem cell to the hair roots in order to revitalise the hair roots
Stemming the Problem
Injections of stem cell are newer treatments available which aim at providing pluripotent stem cell to the hair roots in order to revitalise the hair roots.
Laser Lights
Low intensity diode lasers, light emitting diodes and high frequency current machines also help to a certain extent. Low-level laser stimulation (LLLS) has a panel of laser lights which shines light on the scalp but does not burn it, because of which it is called a cold laser. The visible red light from the hood’s lasers travels several layers into the tissue without harming the skin and scalp. Since the laser does not cut or burn the skin, the therapeutic light-energy is absorbed by the cells, that kick starts the cell repair process. One theory of how this non-invasive, non-chemical hair loss treatment works is that it stimulates the production of energy at the cellular level, therefore improving cell function. During this process, additional nutrients and oxygen are provided to the scalp in order to assist the normal chemical processes performed by those cells, which generate heat, thereby increasing overall blood microcirculation. Lasers, when applied to the scalp and hair, have been said to improve overall hair quality, promote hair growth and increase hair-shaft diameter.
Transplant Tales
Hair Transplants are a surgical treatment option for the most common kind of hair loss which is the pattern hair loss, and transplanting is one of the most effective ways for a person who has undergone severe (or even mild) balding to regain patches of hair. Surprisingly there is no one time treatment for hair loss. Most people need to be on anti-hair loss treatment. This procedure is a good idea for people who experience severe trauma thanks to the shedding of their locks.
Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Lastly, biomedical research shows clear links here between our thoughts, cognitive minds and bodies. An optimistic mindset can improve health and physical wellbeing. Listen and be aware of your thoughts. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones and you may just be surprised. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 79

COORDINATING
SUCCESS
JENNIFER SUDARSHAN Model Co-ordinator dnewgen@gmail.com
She may be a part of the glam world and lovin’ it but she does admit that being a model coordinator is a 24x7 job where work life balance is often non existent. 10 questions with Jennifer Sudarshan
Having been a model coordinator, what has been the most rewarding aspect of your job and what has been the most harrowing part? I tend to meet various talents and get a feel of the changing trends, but the pride of being a part of the fashion world is the most rewarding aspect. Like in any other job, here too there are trust issues and a few people who look at this profession with varied interest. But I have the guts to tell anyone who walks into my office to clear my premises if they have wrong intentions about my profession or my models. How are you able to zero in on a model as being perfect for the shoot in mind? Here is where, our homework starts. The pattern of the scene is narrated by the director. We suggest the face and looks that suit the scene or the story. Based on our suggestion, the production team and the direction team decide upon the model or artist. ‘Co-ordination’ conjures visions of running around, liaising, fixing up dates and being on your toes all day long, yet it is so important to remain ever smiling and well groomed in your line of work. How do you manage to achieve that? This glam world needs well charged, high spirited and ever smiling people to work with. With numerous tensions that are a part of this business, we cannot afford to exhibit our mood swings. How have you maintained the personalprofessional life balance? It is very difficult as none of the work centres are in our control. Hence, it is more like 24 X 7 when the work starts. Of course, as soon as it falls in place and I am convinced all is going well, I can have the luxury of relaxing a bit. Personal life gets its time on weekends and nothing takes me away 80 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
from it. Saturdays and Sundays are family time. What are your tips to spruce up in a jiffy? A cold water wash works the best in any situation. What cosmetic essentials should a lady’s handbag contain? Compact, eyeliner, lip gloss and lipsticks, not forgetting your hairbrush and your perfume. Even men are conscious of their appearance these days and go that extra mile to be well turned out. What grooming cues would you extend to them? Well, for one thing, I would ensure to tell them that they first and foremost need to maintain their physique, for which gym and exercising is quite important, secondly the right dress codes and dress combinations is a must. Men these days have some very good skin improvising creams which they should use based on doctor’s advice. What is your personal summer beauty care regime? Drink a lot of water/liquids, apply loads of sunscreen, eat mild food and wear light coloured clothes. Model coordination seems such a vast domain. What advice would you offer those hoping to get into this field? It is a huge challenge which draws you away from your family and personal life, so you need extreme strength and talent to stay focused and clearly bifurcate the time between the profession and personal life. You also need to have a clear mind about the business you want to do. Here you will find people with all kinds of mindsets approaching you. You should have the guts to keep the bad away, however big and powerful the name is.
Like in any other job, in model coordination too there are trust issues and a few people who look at this profession with varied interest. But I have the guts to tell anyone who walks into my office to clear my premises if they have wrong intentions about my profession or my models

EXPLAINING
EXILIS E
xilis offers a non-invasive form of treatment for the reshaping of targeted fat deposits and the reduction of wrinkles.
in cellulite reduction, skin tightness, tone and elasticity. It is the fastest body contouring treatment available.
Serving Multiple Purposes
Mechanical effects of ultrasound energy allow access and treatment of previously resistant tissue. Exilis precisely targets deeper fat layers, while contact cooling of the surface regulates the temperature of the skin and protects fine dermal structures. The device delivers ultrasonic waves and controlled heating to the tissue. As part of the process, mechanical waves help to open up fibrotic fat structures, causing the separation of the fat-cell defensive formation into individual units. The exposed fat cells are then more isolated and responsive to treatment. High-frequency energy
Exilis technology uses controlled heating to the tissue through uniform molecule excitation, combined with the beneficial effects of ultrasound. It also compliments pre and post treatment in invasive liposuction techniques. Exilis treatments can postpone or eliminate the need for invasive surgery particularly for patients with mild to moderate fat deposits and who may not be candidates for liposuction. It provides effective body contouring via fat volume reduction and skin tightening for a wide variety of clients. The treatment also results in marked improvement
Different Techniques Ultrasound Lipolysis

causes targeted deep thermal heating. Metabolic activity is initiated and the local fat tissue lipolysis process is accelerated. Fat cell volume decreases and the fat layer is reduced. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 83
• In terms of long-term effects on the cardiovascular system, this is very undesirable. According to histological findings, it is clear that a combination of therapeutic ultrasound in conjunction with highfrequency current, strongly affect the local metabolism of fats. This is opposed to standard measures such as diet, exercise and dietary supplements, which tend to have a negligible impact. This ultimately leads to a reduction of the total volume of fat tissue.
Who is It Recommended For?
Exilis is recommended for any patient between the ages of 25 and 70+ who desires cosmetic improvement, particularly those areas that show the signs of aging, and have not responded to treatment options other than surgery. As the Exilis device is guided over the area to be treated creating a deep heating sensation, the underside of the applicator provides cooling to the skin’s surface, ensuring more comfort during the treatment.
Treatment and Downtime
Exilis is a relatively new device, but current studies show that those who have had treatment over 2 years ago have maintained their results. Typically, once fat cells have been destroyed, they do not come back Radio Frequency Collagen Rejuvenation
This shows dramatic improvement of skin density and dermal thickening based on neocollagenesis. Treatment is not dependent on skin colour and is available for all skin types. Synchronized pulse energy delivery enables the precise dose of superficial heating. Only a fraction of energy is needed when compared to existing technologies. How it acts: The collagen fibres triplehelix structure is affected by heat. This initiates the unravelling process. The ultrasound waves mechanically disrupt the collagen fibres. The combination of energies quickly and efficiently dissociates the collagen structure. The natural healing process evokes the fibroblasts to produce new collagen 84 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
fibres. The skin structure is refilled with new collagen.
Not Only for the Overweight
Even in objectively slim individuals with a BMI of below 25, there are localised fat deposits that are very difficult to access from a metabolic perspective. When trying to reduce these deposits by systemic measures, one encounters several problems: • A very low calorie intake (VLC), results in the increased synthesis of fatty acids (FA) in the liver and subcutaneous fat. • Consequently, there is a change in the composition range of fatty acid in serum (TAG). • The body’s content of saturated fatty acids increases at the expense of its unsaturated fatty acids content.
The Exilis platform was designed to deliver energy in a short treatment of under an hour for greater patient convenience and comfort. Generally, a series of 4-6 treatments will be required to achieve the desired result. There is no downtime with this procedure. There may be temporary pinkness or redness in the skin for about 20-30 minutes that quickly subsides.
Target Areas and Results
Due to the unique design of Exiis, the neck, face, body, arms and legs, back fat and knees are all treated successfully. Exilis is a relatively new device, but current studies show that those who have had treatment over 2 years ago have maintained their results. Typically, once fat cells have been destroyed, they do not come back. You may start to see some skin tightening and facial reduction results after just 1 to 2 Exilis treatment sessions. Treatments will be spaced out over 1 to 2 week intervals. Though Exilis will not deliver the same results as a surgical facelift or neck-lift, it is a great non-surgical alternative for those who wish to tighten the skin and remove isolated areas of fat.
FACIAL REJUVENATION Faceology, a new technology developed by beauty expert Narayan, blends traditional healing practices with modern means to knock the years off our face leaving you feeling younger and fresher Mr. Ashokumar, ckashok5@gmail.com

yes may be the windows to our soul but our face is the window to our entire body. In these days of stress and nerves, our face tells its own tales: the dark circles under the eyes betray the late nights while lustreless skin indicates corporate tensions. Acnes and other facial blemishes hint at dietary imbalances and fine lines perhaps point at financial worries. Faceology is a facial skin treatment that promises to address these issues and tap into our inner radiance to let the glow reflect on the outside thus lifting years off our visage.
Reiki: Reiki is a Japanese technique
Combining the Techniques
Technique, or EFT, is a psychological acupressure technique which aims at improving emotional health which is believed to be absolutely essential to physical health and healing. In essence, it is the same as traditional acupuncture, but here instead of the invasive needles, fingertips are used to tap the energy meridians of the body while voicing positive affirmations to relax and de-stress the body.
This designer-facial technique was developed by Narayan (aka Krisit Marie Jones), a licensed manicurist/ pedicurist. Narayan promotes Faceology as a body/mind/emotion/ spirit approach to treatment. Each session, typically lasting 60 or 90 minutes, is actually a combination of three different healing techniques, Reiki, facial reflexology and EFT.
for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Commonly called hands-on-healing, in this process, universal energy (reiki) is transferred through the palms, which is believed to allow self healing and restore equilibrium.
Facial Reflexology: In this
technique, experts use their hands and fingers to stimulate and manipulate the facial muscles and the nerve points to open up the energy system of the body for holistic rejuvenation.
In addition to applying principals used in reflexology, Reiki and meridian tapping, Narayan also employs crystal therapy, guided meditation, and breathing techniques during her Faceology treatments.

The FUT-FUE Formula
Hair transplantation has been around for a number of years; however, recently its popularity has increased with two main methods occupying centre stage: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). Here is how these two methods work: In FUT, a strip of hair is taken from behind the scalp which contains skin (epidermis and dermis) and fat upto 20 cms long and 2 cms wide. Once the strip is taken, the wound is closed in layers. From each strip, Follicular Units are cut using a microscope, without spoiling the roots and transplanted to recipient areas. The biggest advantage of this advanced procedure compared to past hair transplantation procedures is that while the latter used larger grafts (10-15 hair) and often produced an unnatural look, in FUT the results will mimic the way hair grows naturally thus making the transplant virtually undetectable. FUE is a relatively simple procedure when carried out by a specialist where the follicular units are extracted from the
Hair transplantation has been around for a number of years; however, recently its popularity has increased with two main methods occupying centre stage: FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) occipital area using a small (0.9mm) punch and transplanted to the recipient area. FUE seems to be widely preferred to follicular unit strip surgery. Scarring at the back of the head and post-operative pain is more as this procedure is incisive but no sutures are required and the recovery time is much faster. Also, the number of graft harvested is more (up to 3500) and graft spoilage is less. The survival role rate is more than in the case of FUT when it is done by an experienced surgeon.
Other Options to Explore
Apart from FUT and FUE, two other methods of hair transplantation are also in the running.
PRP Platelet Rich Plasma: In PRP, 20ml to 60ml of
peripheral blood is collected. The collected blood, which contains PPP (Platelet Poor Plasma) and RBC, is centrifuged and this PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) contains several growth factors which are essential for hair growth. Sometimes, the PRP therapy is combined with FUT and FUE for optimum results.
Full Length Long Hair Transplant: Unlike regular
hair transplant procedure, in full length hair transplant the results are instant. The transplanted hair usually falls off in 2
to 3 weeks from the day of surgery. But experts note that in most cases only 50% hair fall occurs in most patients. So in long hair transplant procedure, even if half the tresses fall off after 2 to 3 weeks the remaining half is enough to ensure a crowning glory.
Post-Operative Instructions
As with any other operation or surgical procedure, hair transplantation also requires certain post operative guidelines to be followed: • Have liquid to semi solid diet for 12 hours. • Keep the head elevated for one week. • Take doctor prescribed antibiotics and painkillers for five days. • While going outdoors, wear a surgeon cap for the first five days. • Keep hair dry for first five days. • After five days use Betadine / Shampoo and wash hair gently. • Undertake travel only after 24 hours post surgery. • Hair oil/Hair spray can be used after three weeks. • Helmet/hair cut/ hair dye application should be resumed only after one month. o matter how prepared we are for that dreadful point in our life when we start losing hair it still takes a heavy toll on our individuality, personality and self-confidence. Though hair loss is something that cannot be completely ignored, be it due to heredity or other reasons like stress, overexhaustion, inadequate and improper health routines, we can definitely take measures to lessen its blow and restore our confidence and sense of self identity. Thanks to the advancements in science and technology, there are a plethora of surgical and non surgical options to combat hair loss. Hair replacement, surgical and non-surgical, is a widely popular method. Hair transplant has now grown out to become the most successful as well as sought after technique to not only combat hair loss but also help regain their lost hair. However, hair transplantation requires enough hair growth to serve as donor hair and hence is not appropriate for all. In such cases, non surgical hair replacement is the most preferred option when medical and surgical interventions do not optimally help the client.
Non Surgical Hair Replacement
It is a replacement technique to give back your lost hair in a seamless and life changing way. The secret behind its virtually undetectable and natural feel is an artificial “skin, a micro-thin lace/ fabric that is so porous and virtually invisible to the human eye. Premium quality human hairs are incorporated by hand, strand by strand, into the artificial skin base to match your hair’s texture and colour. As the hair system is placed on the head, it adopts and moulds itself to match the exact shape of the head, giving you a natural look.
Hair Extensions
Hair extensions offer a safe and natural
solution that instantly adds length and thickness to your existing hair. Mostly used by women, hair extensions are perfectly styled and blended to meet individual requirements and make it look completely natural. Hair extensions now also come without glues or heat or high tension braids.
Volumizer
Volumizers are specifically useful to address the issue of thinning hair in women, especially on top of the head or near frontal or on partition area. Customized to suit individual hair texture and colour, volumizers are attached to the head giving instant volume and bounce to the hair and also helping in combining flawlessly with the existing hair. Volumizers apply a simple and proprietary attachment method that can even be self attached.
Laser Hair Therapy
A preventive method targeting early hair loss, laser hair therapy involves the use of a laser hair comb to energize and invigorate hair follicles by penetrating laser light into the tissues of the scalp. This process stimulates blood circulation, cell metabolism and protein synthesis thus strengthening and regenerating the hair roots and hair shaft.
Hair Systems for Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia
Hair loss for patients undergoing chemotherapy, although transient, can be a very devastating experience. The emotional wellbeing of people suffering from cancer can greatly contribute to treatment compliance and recovery. Hair system allows a person to engage in daily activities to resume normalcy while undergoing treatment and even thereafter. Patients can go on with their daily activities without any restraint or the fear of others discovering about their illness. However, care should be taken to wear only FDA approved hair systems or those recommended by medical doctors. Such hair systems eliminate any risk of infection to the person and are tested to be safe for people undergoing chemotherapy. Furthermore, there are fun, fashionable wigs made out of high heat fibres that can be worn to sport different styles. These wigs are available in various styles to suit individual preferences. besity is described as the excessive accumulation of fat that exceeds the body’s skeletal and physical standards. Obesity, today, constitutes a significant disorder in the world India has an alarming rate of increase in obese people with close to 20% of the population being obese and around 2% being morbidly obese.
they are morbidly obese, their success rate slips down to only 10%. This adds to psychological distress and affects their quality of life. If you are tired of trying all treatments without much success, you might explore the surgical option. It is the only proven method of achieving long-term weight control and also regress co-morbid conditions effectively.
Understanding BMI
Weight Loss Surgery
BMI = Weight in kg Height in m2
Candidates for Surgery
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a statistical measure of body weight based on a person’s weight and height. It is the most widely used diagnostic tool to identify weight problems within a population, usually whether individuals are underweight, overweight or obese.
It is a serious health risk when BMI becomes morbid that is when an adult is 40 kg or more over ideal body weight (BMI of 38) or has a BMI of 32 or more in combination with a health related condition (co-morbidities). Some of the most common diseases that are directly and indirectly linked to obesity are Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic heart disease, high cholesterol.
Weight Loss by Medical Management
This essentially involves lifestyle changes and nutritional counselling with or without usage of supplements. other alternative procedures like ultrasound waves (cool sculpting), Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), GM diet, Nasal Tube Therapy, has also added variety to weight loss. But these modes are not for the morbidly obese. The fact is that only up to 30 % of individuals succeed with these modes, and if
Objectives of weight loss surgery include: • Reduction of energy intake • Increase in the patient’s energy output • And thus help the body to achieve new energy balance • To modify metabolic inefficiency thus aiding in improvement of associated disorders • BMI > 40 kg/m2 or BMI>35 with pronounced comorbidities. • several failed non-surgical attempts at weight reduction under the guidance of a physician over a period of one year • in India, modification to international accepted criteria were made by Obesity Surgeons Society of India (OSSI) by way of reducing the BMI by 2.5 points.
Preparing for Surgery
A detailed preliminary outpatient consultation with the bariatric surgeon, nutritionist and counsellor is mandatory. Thorough investigation and appropriate referral consultation is obtained as and when necessary.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is an operation in which approximately 2/3rd of the left side of the stomach is removed BEAUTY BECAUSE | 93
laparoscopically. The stomach become like a hockey stick or sleeve. The capacity of stomach ranges between 60 – 100 cc and satiety s achieved very early.
Gastric Bypass
It involves creation of a small stomach pouch, which restricts the food intake. In addition, the initial segment of the small intestine is bypassed and a direct connection is made from the remaining part of the intestine to the new stomach pouch to reduce absorption of food. The small stomach (25-30cc) created sends early signs of satiety and the bypass segment of the intestine (100-150cm) leads to incomplete absorption of food. Hence there is greater degree of weight loss. A new addition in the armamentarium is Mini Gastric Bypass, a modification to gastric bypass as an alternative for patients who needs to consume more volume than bypass patients and yet get similar results. However, long term results are awaited to this new emerging technique. Other available techniques like bilio-pancreatic diversion and duodenal switch are not eligible for Asians, especially Indian population who are less of protein eaters. In right hands the mean operating time for sleeve should be around 45 - 60 minutes and around 90 - 150 minutes for gastric bypass. Though there are certain complications associated with bariatric surgery like leaks, bleeding, intestinal obstruction, nutritional imbalance etc., they are rare and often are minor and temporary issues that gets better with time.
Revisional Bariatric Surgery
Revision Weight Loss Surgery is is performed on patients who have already undergone a form of bariatric surgery, and have either substantially regained the lost weight or have not successfully achieved significant weight loss results from the initial surgery. Procedures are usually performed laparoscopically. There are several weight loss surgery options, some of which may limit later options for revision weight loss surgery. The most common procedure that requires revision is Gastric Banding. However the choice of revision surgery will be made only after detailed consultation with the bariatric surgeon.
Weight Loss after Surgery
The bariatric procedure can successfully start patients on the road to recovery from clinically severe obesity, but surgery alone will not ensure long-term success. In order to get down to a healthy weight, patients must adjust their eating habits and exercise patterns. Expected weight loss is around 55-75% of the excess. Successful habits include eating three small, wellbalanced meals, and a maximum of one snack a day. Patients tend to regain weight if they start eating larger portions, graze, consume high fat or ‘junk’ foods, or drink high-calorie beverages. A program of regular exercise is very important for promoting and maintaining weight loss. Studies have shown that patients who exercise 30 minutes at least three times per week lose an average of 18% more excess weight than patients who do not exercise regularly. Patients should take personal responsibility for staying in control. Regular attendance of support groups and workshops greatly increases patient’s compliance with optimal weight loss and maintenance.
Operative Techniques
Surgical weight loss is exclusively performed by laparoscopy 94 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
or keyhole surgery in which operations are performed through 4 – 5 small (usually 0.5 – 1.2 cm) incisions. Specialized equipment and instrumentations are necessary for this technique thus making it a little more expensive than laparoscopy for other diseases.
What is New?
Latest additions in the field of laparoscopy include Single Incision Laparoscopic surgery, and Endoluminal surgeries. Single Incision Laparoscopic surgery (SILS) This technique famously called SILS or Single port Surgery is where laparoscopy is performed through one hole instead of three different holes. Though SILS faces difficulty in manipulation and traction of tissues as well as ergonomics huge benefits with regards to literally no scar seen, less pain, and early return to work compared to laparoscopy made it one of the most sought out technique of this decade.
Endoluminal Bariatric Surgery
There is a whole range of endoscopic procedures used to treat obese patients. The balloon device is commonly used, and is currently available in the world market. However these techniques are mainly used as an intermediate step to reduce 10 – 15 kg or as a first stage to reduce weight of a super obese patient. There is a role for endoscopic intestinal sleeve for reduction of diabetes. Various endoscopic treatments are currently under investigation. However, a few accepted treatment options are available for primary treatment of obesity as well as for revision procedures.
Making a decision
The first and the most important step in the process of preparing for surgical weight loss management is the decision making. It may be difficult to distinguish between various procedures, practices, surgeons or hospitals. Consulting an advanced tertiary centre with all possible options of weight loss program available is the best way forward as the entire treatment option should be tailor made to suit individual needs. You also need to think about your determination and ability to make some serious changes in the way you live your life. Bariatric surgery is a tool to help improve your health. As with any new tool, you must actively learn how to use it to get the best benefits.

Disproportionately large breasts could not only cause awkwardness, they could also cause neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain and skin rashes. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to make them proportionate to the body size and reshape and lift them for aesthetic appeal
W
e women have to face a harsh fact: sagging breasts are inevitable with age. As you watch your pert chest losing the battle against gravity and drooping little by little with the passage of years, you may feel a sense of loss and see your self confidence ebb day by day. The good news is: you don’t have to live your life with deflated breasts. Mastopexy could be the answer you are looking for to perk up your assets.
Why do breasts sag?
At the onset it is necessary to be assured that breast ptosis (breast sagging) is natural. As they are devoid of any muscles to hold them up, they start drooping when the tissues giving them support stretch and lose their elasticity. This happens mainly due to aging. Indulging in strenuous activities without proper support, hormonal imbalances and weight fluctuations are other reasons. Heavy smoking could cause your breast to sag by destroying the skin’s elasticity protein, elastin. Breast lift surgery is done to correct the change in volume, reshape the breast and lift the nipple to its proper place. The extent of scars depends on the particular problem being addressed. In general, they are a small trade off for the gratifying benefits obtained. The diagnosis of the problem and the procedure should be done by an experienced and accomplished plastic surgeon.
Breast reduction surgery
Disproportionately large breasts could not only cause
awkwardness, they could also cause neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain and skin rashes. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to make them proportionate to the body size and reshape and lift them for aesthetic appeal. Improvement in posture, rise in confidence levels and overall mental wellbeing are the added pluses. The results are long lasting too. Depending on your personal situation, it can be done in an outpatient facility, or you may have to stay for one night in the hospital. In either case, the surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgery lasts anywhere from 2 to 7 hours.
How your surgeon does it

HEALTH CONTENTMENT GOODNESS O
besity is a direct repercussion of the junk food invasion: so many temptations, so little resistance. Add to this the innumerable fleeting fad diets and the scenario steadily worsens. Dieters find that no sooner do they shed two kilos, three more annoyingly snake their way up our thighs, hips and belly. If you are one among those who are disgruntled with their eating regimes, try your hand at the HCG diet plan. Not only is it safe, it also offers rapid weight loss that involves using a combination of a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) and Human Chronic Gonadotropin (HCG) injections.
What is HCG?
HCG is one of the natural hormones secreted by the placenta during pregnancy. It has many functions and is used medically to treat a variety of conditions, including assisting the body to metabolize fat to be used as energy for both mother and foetus. Medical studies have shown that when
used in combination with a low calorie diet and exercise, fat loss occurs along with the inches melting away. Although still under the scanner for weight loss, HCG has been approved by the FDA as a treatment for other medical conditions.
Benefits of the Hormone
Used in extremely low doses for weight loss, HCG injections must be administered under the strict supervision of a qualified professional. When used in larger doses, HCG increases fertility. Smaller doses, however, do not increase fertility. On the subject of fertility, it has been found, with every 2.5 kg of weight lost, it does increase. HCG can cause a false positive pregnancy test in urine only.
Some of the benefits of HCG include the following: • A positive effect on mood • Increased energy levels as compared to other low calorie diets • Relief from back pain • Relief from migraine attacks • Rapid inch loss • Safety
• Re-sculpting the body by removing excess fat proportionately from where the excess fat resides • Helps to reset hypothalamus • Increased BMR

HCG FAQs How does the HCG diet work? Basically, your calorie intake is restricted to 500 calories per day, along with the HCG injections. Together, the injections and the calorie intake work towards speeding up your metabolism and sustain weight loss for the long term. The diet has to be monitored by a qualified nutrition expert. The HCG diet is a means to help you get healthy and slender and prompt you into eating nutritious food instead of food loaded with fat. The rapid weight loss is a motivating factor as it helps you get out of the ‘obesity’ bracket and become closer to your natural weight as quickly as possible. You will be happy to note that this is not a diet that ends the moment you stop being on it. The changes you see and feel will remain with you for a long time. Of course, you will have to cooperate with your body by eating healthy and staying fit. Is HCG safe? Yes. In fact, HCG is extremely safe. However, as with any weight loss or exercise program, it is always advisable to consult a qualified specialist before embarking on any diet plan. Who can go on the HCG diet? Anybody can, at any age, go on the HCG diet. The HCG hormone is present in every human tissue, man or woman. Sadly for the ladies, men drop those kilos quicker and easier than the ladies do.
slows down, you feel sluggish, and when you get back to eating normally, the weight comes back again because your body is busy storing all the food it gets in anticipation of starvation. So, in effect, it is not a good idea. Enter HCG. When you use this hormone in the prescribed ultra low doses, the stored excess fat is used as energy and the low calories prevent the fattening of fat cells. You do not lose muscle mass or bone mass. You only lose the excess weight and keep it off. I am sure to get hungry with so little food going in. It is a mind thing. Can HCG help? Here is where self control comes in. People do feel hungry during the first few days on the HCG diet. It is normal. But, by the second week, you will find yourself adjusting to the food situation and find your hunger is actually satiated. HCG works by activating the fat cells to be used as energy, and reducing appetite. Drink plenty of green tea through the day. It helps. And remember, you will feel good, energetic and ready to take on the world even though you are on a restricted calorie diet. I am diabetic. Can I still follow the HCG diet? Yes you can. When you are on the HCG diet, you do not get the hypoglycemia symptoms as there are no hunger pangs. If you do get weak or begin trembling, simply consume 2 tbsp of sugar. Remember to monitor sugar levels regularly.
Note: If pregnant or nursing, HCG is definitely not for you. Pregnant women are supposed to have more of the HCG hormone in them. Then, how come they put on weight instead of losing it? It works like this: HCG will utilize the fat only when the food intake does not provide the requisite number of fat calories needed for the body to function normally. This is the very reason why when someone is on the HCG diet, they are prescribed a very low dosage of the hormone in combination with a very low calorie diet. Result: effective and rapid weight loss. From what I’ve heard and seen, a low calorie diet means the body will go into fat storage mode. The repercussions include a sluggish, slow metabolism. Will this happen to me when I do go on the HCG diet? As a rule, when we starve our bodies of fat and the calories they are accustomed to, they begin to store calories as fat. Metabolism slows down. As a result, when we begin eating normally, we gain more weight than before going on the diet. Fat, despite its notoriety, is a source of energy. Therefore, when the HCG hormone is used in combination with a very low calorie diet, the body begins using the stored fat for energy, automatically dropping the kilos and toning up your body, naturally. HCG resets your metabolism. Why do I need HCG? I can very well do it with just a low calorie diet, can I not? Yes. You can lose weight by eating fewer calories. But, remember, the body goes into shock mode and begins storing any fat it gets during starvation. You are likely to lose more muscle than fat during such ‘deprivation’ diets. I am on medication. Can I continue with the HCG diet? Yes. HCG does not interact with ANY medication. However, as stated previously, it is always better to consult a doctor before embarking on any weight loss or exercise program. Can a pregnant woman go on the HCG diet? No. Discontinue it even if you have started on the HCG diet and discover you are pregnant. It is a given that you must consult your doctor immediately on discovering your pregnancy. Exactly how much weight can I expect to lose on the program? While an exact number cannot be named, people have lost between 11-15 kg through the 40 days program. For those taking on the 26 days program, the weight loss is between 6-8 kg. A lot of the weight loss depends on an individual’s constitution. Does HCG affect menstrual cycles? No. your periods will come as regularly as they normally do. The amount of HCG is so small that no changes will be experienced. Similarly, if you are trying to get pregnant, HCG will neither hamper nor enhance the process. A word of caution: do not embark on the HCG program if you are 5 to 6 days away from your menstrual cycle. But, if you are already on HCG, you can continue with it and remain on your diet even during your periods. Like in other diets, will my weight loss slow down after the first two weeks? Just like in any other exercise or diet program, the first two weeks show amazing results. Then, the weight loss slows down to a plateau and levels off. It will not completely stop. In fact, the inch loss will continue and after a short period of time the weight will drop again. When you weigh yourself, you are bound to smile. Suppose I skip a meal? Never skip any meals. You MUST eat the entire 500 prescribed calories, especially the protein, so that your body loses fat, not your muscle. What about exercising every day? Absolutely yes! You can definitely do some easy walking for 30 minutes. Won’t my body need multi vitamins while on the HCG diet? Of course it would. But it must be under supervision as your body will need the perfect dosage of vitamins and minerals to give you energy and rev up that metabolism. In some rare cases, dieters experience leg cramps for which they need potassium. We recommend you get on this diet after consultation with a qualified specialist who will monitor your progress and keep you motivated. Is it normal to get a headache during the first week? Are there any other side effects? Slight headaches are a rare possibility among some dieters during the first week. Your body is busy getting rid of excess fat really quickly and is going through a major detoxification.
Naturally it could find the change difficult to digest. Result: objection in the form of slight headaches. In case they happen, please go ahead and have Paracetamol tablets if needed. Besides these slight, rare and mild headaches in the beginning, there are no side effects to the HCG diet. Suppose I want to keep dropping my excess kilos, can I continue to take the injections beyond the 40 prescribed days? Get this right. 40 days is the limit you can continuously take the injections for. Beyond those 40 days, you must take a break that lasts between 2 to 6 weeks. Your consulting expert will be the best judge of when you can re-start. The idea of the break is to ensure your body does not get used to the HCG hormone. Remember: it takes 40 days for the body to get habituated to anything. Even during healing after surgery the most important time is the first 6 weeks. Another point, the last 3 days of your HCG diet, you will be advised to stop the injections but continue with the diet. This is to flush your body of all HCG before your consultant puts you on a maintenance diet. Your diet will become 1200 to 1500 calories per day and you can go back to exercising regularly. I am afraid of weight loss slowing down or plateau-ing. What could I do to overcome these? It could happen. If it does, up your green tea and / or water consumption. Keep the intake up by drinking 2-3 litres a day. Still if the weight remains stubbornly up for more than 5-6 days, go on an ‘Apple Day’. On this day, you will eat only 6 apples. You will get nothing else to eat or drink, except water. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 103
vegetarian protein? Don’t worry. There are options. You could have 100 to 120 ml of skimmed milk daily. For those who eat eggs, you could have one full egg with three more egg whites – either boiled or poached. Half a cup of cottage cheese (non fat) or plain yogurt (again non fat) can be eaten. Have all the mineral and vitamin supplements recommended by your consultant regularly. They are prescribed for a reason – to help you achieve your goal while giving your body all the nutrients it needs. As a vegetarian, I have heard that nuts are great substitutes for protein. Can I have those and wheat? No. nuts and wheat are great sources of protein, but they are accompanied by starch, which is not HCG diet friendly at all. Have soy milk, if your system can handle, as a replacement to cow’s milk. However, remember to have the sugar free version. Will I gain back the weight once I finish with the HCG diet? Not if you maintain your weight by watching what you eat and by exercising. If you are negligent, overeat and become a couch potato, of course the weight will slither on again. Does one diet plan fit every body? Not really. Your HCG expert will determine the kind of diet plan you need, depending on the protocols of your body and personal needs. Whatever the protocols may be, you will not be permitted to eat sweet fruits. Starches and milk are either limited or removed totally from your diet plan. Be warned: HCG is serious business, not a mere lifestyle change. It is a whole new direction for a whole new you. Use of simple things we take for granted, like moisturizers, chapsticks for chapped lips or conditioners will be monitored. They all contain fats which could be harmful and detrimental to the very purpose of HCG.
What if I feel like an alcoholic beverage while on the HCG diet? Ask your professional consultant about that one. How about makeup? Can I use it? You could. Try to avoid lotions and moisturizers or any oil based liquid makeup. HCG is very sensitive to oils, creams and fats to an extent that use of them could slow down your weight loss process and cause you to face disappointment. There’s hope, though. You could use mineral makeup or pressed powders like a compact, along with an oil free foundation. Eye makeup and lipsticks are allowed. When it comes down to that glossy stuff like chapsticks or lip glosses: avoid them for the duration of your HCG diet. In case your skin gets too dry, use mineral based baby oil as a moisturizer. Do I need to prepare for the diet? Yes you do. Make up your mind to stay focused on the results. It is small price to pay for the big pay out. Remember: the diet is only for a few weeks. It is not something you have to go with for the rest of your life. You CAN do it. And once it is done, the weight stays off, provided you don’t go into binge mode.
These tips will help:
• Recognize the need to lose weight • Set a goal • Choose the date and stay committed • Find out the foods that conform to the diet and stock up on them • Pre-prepare the week’s meals and snacks before you start • Make tracking charts to maintain records of the weight and the inches you have lost. Update them daily • Weigh yourself every single day, as soon as you wake up and have eliminated all waste from your stomach. While weighing yourself, wear light weight clothing and use similar garments every day. Keep your charts handy, so you can update them immediately. Your chart should have the following:
Starting date: Goal weight: Date
Dosage of HCG

HCG DIET- OVERVIEW:
news is you can add 4-5 tsp of healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil per day into your diet.
Phase 1: Days 1 and 2
It is now time for you to start your exercise plan. Begin regular workouts that include both aerobic and anaerobic exercises.
This is for both the 26 day and the 40 day program Loading days are the first two days of the diet. The term ‘loading’ literally means you load yourself with food but take the HCG injection. This is so that your hypothalamus gland is balanced. Eat to your fill.
Phase 2: Days 3 to 26 or 40, depending on the time frame prescribed to you The ‘diet’ begins from Day 3. This is when you start consuming your permitted 500 calories. Don’t plan any lavish parties, lunches or dinners. Stay home and stick to the diet. It is now that your body will begin dipping into that bank of stored fat and using it up as energy thanks to the HCG hormone you will be injecting. Those cravings you so experience during other diets will surprise you by not appearing at all.
Phase 3: Almost the end
Yes! The end arrives, eventually. This is when you stop the injections, but stay on the 500 calories diet for 3 more days to help flush your system of the HCG hormone.
Phase 4: Maintenance phase
There is a school of thought that believes you should only weigh in once every week. After HCG, we suggest you weigh yourself every day to help keep the weight you have achieved constant. Should the scales show a gain of up to one kilo, simply observe ‘Steak Day’. It will stabilize your weight straight away. During Steak Day, drink 2-3 litres of water. For breakfast, lunch and snacks, have zero calories. During dinner, eat 150-200 grams of protein along with an apple or tomato. Make-up, lotions, and moisturizers are allowed during the maintenance phase.
Phase 5: A lifetime of healthy weight!
Once the maintenance phase is complete, you can start having sugars, starches and healthy carbohydrates. Remember, moderation is the key. Stay away from sugar as much as you can, and if you cannot, eat a tiny bit. Chew on it slowly.
As soon as your diet ends, the maintenance phase begins. Now that you have achieved weight loss, you have got to know how to keep it off. Your body must learn to continue the metabolic speed it has picked up and maintain its balance it with your new weight.
Starches can make a comeback into your daily food. Add them a little at a time instead of in one large surge. Keep away from potatoes, refined foods, fast foods, hydrogenated oils, processed foods, canned fruit, fruit drinks and sodas. Carry on with the proteins.
This phase lasts for exactly 3 weeks and you get to eat 1100-1500 calories per day. Easy? Well, definitely easier. You must say a firm ‘no’ to starches and sugar. The good
Check your weight as often as three to four times a week. If you find any weight gain, go into Steak Day mode instantly.
Tips and caution alerts while on the HCG diet
The single most important reason you are on this diet is because you want to lose weight. The HCG diet helps you achieve your goal. However, there are rules you have to follow that will help you get the best possible results: • A daily weight check is important • Walking for 30 minutes every day helps • Before you start or stop any medication, talk to your doctor • Be religious about taking your prescribed multi vitamin and mineral supplements to give your body the nutrition it needs • Do not overdo the exercise bit. You will get hungry and tired • No unprescribed medication. Talk to your doctor before swallowing any pills • No skipping meals or overeating • Say a firm ‘no’ to sugars and starches BEAUTY BECAUSE | 105

If you are haunted by comments about your sunken under eyes and pronounced laugh lines, then help is at hand. Nano fat grafting for facial rejuvenation lets you put your best face forward
Nanofat is essentially used to fill in irregularities and grooves that occur on the skin. It is also known to significantly reduce pigmentation. It finds application in a variety of other indications
W
ith the ever-growing list of fat grafting indications, there has been a parallel evolution of the grafting techniques over the last 50 years – from basic fat grafting (macrofat) intended at adding volume in various body parts to micro grafting (microfat) that is directed at addressing smaller facial structures and eventually nanografting (nanofat). The present day popularity of nano fat grafts in the lipofill arena traces back to the discovery of the role of adipose – derived stem cells. With increasing awareness about fat grafts, Botox and fillers have taken a backstage.
Steps Involved
Just as in a regular fat grafting procedure, fat is liposuctioned from feasible areas of the body, emulsified by passing it back and forth through fine apertures between 2 syringes, followed by filtration of the lipoaspirate. Nanograft technique requires fat to be emulsified into pure liquid of very fine consistency, which is then injected as a fine liquid layer under the skin in the desired areas with needles or cannulas as small as 27 gauges. It is preferably injected into the intradermal level of the skin for improved quality. A nanofat average preparation yields about 1 ml of nanofat per 10 ml of lipoasirate. It carries very few intact fat cells but its cellular component is stromal vascular fraction made of a substantial concentration of adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells, with excellent proliferation and differentiation capabilities. Experts opine that the improved outcomes are due to increased collagen production and remodelling that are triggered by the grafted stem cells. They play a supportive role for the adipocytes (fat cells) in the injected area and later in neoangiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) of the fat graft. Due to the underlying stem cell activity, the results may take months to show up.
Banish those Grooves
Nanofat is essentially used to fill in irregularities and grooves that occur on the skin. It is also known to significantly reduce pigmentation. It finds application in a variety of indications such as smooth restoration of: • Fine facial lines • Wrinkles • Neck lines • Rhytides (perioral) • Scars • Stretch marks • Periorbital skin (esp. dark lower eyelids) • Nasolabial folds (laugh line) • Perioral lines • Lip rejuvenation • Areola rejuvenation • Sun damage in décolletage area This nanofat protocol can be used in conjunction with chemical peels and also laser resurfacing.
A Distinct Advantage
It has a distinct advantage over fillers in that fat used is from the patient’s own body and hence 100% risk-free from rejections. Moreover, they are more of a permanent fill in comparison to a few other fillers that get absorbed over time. It carries an additional advantage of being feasible to be performed under local anaesthesia. To highlight the importance of natural fillers such as nano fat grafts, organizations in western countries have established facilities to store fat and use them when needed as a much more economical alternative to use of repetitive artificial fillers. Swelling is a common occurrence following the procedure, which will subside in less than a week. Fat grafting procedures are considered relatively safe. BEAUTY BECAUSE | 107

T
ime and again, many people from philosophers to hair colouring experts have asked the question, “What would life be without colours?” We live amongst colour, everywhere we look there is colour, we cannot avoid colour! Hair colour adds style and substance to a person’s look. Colour can change someone’s entire attitude. Shyness can give way to confidence and boldness with appropriate hair colour! That was perhaps the reason why natural dyes were in vogue right from the days of yore. However, consistency was very difficult to get with natural hair colours and many people were allergic to the ingredients used. The first safe commercial hair colour was finally created in 1909 by a French chemist, Eugene Schuller. His company, then known as the French Harmless Hair Dye Company, soon changed its name to its present popular avatar, L’Oreal. Colouring hair changed from being an art to a very precise science. Today 75% of women all over the world colour their hair, with a growing number of men following suit.
How does hair colour work?
Hair is mostly composed of keratin, the same protein found in your skin and fingernails. The natural colour of the hair depends on two other proteins, eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin is responsible for the darker hair shades, brown to black, and phaeomelanin is responsible for the lighter shades, golden blond, ginger and red. Absence of either one of these melanins produces white hair. Hair colour is the result of a series of chemical reactions between the molecules in hair, pigments, as well as peroxide and ammonia, if present.
To Colour or Not to Colour
Not surprisingly, there are a lot of misconceptions about hair colour. Complaints abound with people claiming to have observed greater hair loss, drier hair, rougher hair, and even increasing white hair with every colouring. Is this what you can expect too? If it is really so harmful, why then are there so many people opting for hair colour? We clear up some fallacies.
1 – Colouring my hair leads to greater hair fall and/or dry hair:
• Myth
It is really important to know that 100 strands of hair falling a day is normal. This is a part of the hair growth cycle and cannot be avoided. If you are planning to colour your hair, it is better not to do it at home. Hair colouring is a professional service and it should be done
110 | BEAUTY BECAUSE
One surprising piece of information we learned from our research? Dirty hair is ideal for dyeing! The scalp’s natural oils work as a buffer to prevent irritation of the scalp during colouring. It is also much easier to section slightly dirty hair, which ensures even colour distribution. So there, nothing, not even unwashed hair, can prevent you from getting that amazing look you have always wanted! Here’s to a life full of colour!

by professionally trained hair dressers. Also important is that you insist on using quality professional hair colouring products available in the market. It will never lead to any dryness or hair loss. You should also take care of your hair once it has been coloured. It is nothing much: just continue using the colour-save, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner recommended by your hairstylist.
• Myth 2 – Colouring my hair leads to more white hair:
White hair is caused by the absence of melanin. Your body stops producing melanin gradually, not all at one go. So yes, white hair will increase with time. Hair colour is only an external service, as it is applied on the outer surface of the scalp. Melanin is produced in the root bulb of the hair shaft present beneath the scalp. Hair colour has nothing to do with increasing white hair.
• Myth 3 - Maintaining coloured hair is expensive and time consuming:
Keeping your hair in the best condition does take a little effort, but so does keeping your skin beautiful and your body healthy. Coloured locks need a specific home care regime, but this mostly consists of using a specific shampoo and conditioner which help your hair retain shine and make the colour last longer. Avoid using strong retail shampoos as they can strip your colour sooner and make your hair dry.
Hot Tips for Cool Hair: Do’s and Don’ts of Hair Colouring
• Choose your hair colour based on your complexion and what will suit it, not on what your personal preferences are. For instance, if you like pink, it definitely doesn’t mean you should colour your hair pink! • If you find you are using more make up than before, you probably have used the wrong hair colour. Hair colour should make your face glow and your skin tone comes alive when you have chosen the correct hair colour. So, it is important to consider your natural hair colour, your skin tone and even eye colour when choosing a hair colour. Take your hair stylist’s advice in this matter as he or she can help you pick the right shade. • When going to the salon for a hair colouring service, never combine it with any steam related service for the hair at the same time. • Emulsification, a type of massage where the colour is sealed into the hair, is very important after colour is applied. Do ensure your stylist pays enough attention to that. It makes your colour long lasting and gives it a rich shine. • For some extra pampering, try a colour leave in mask occasionally. This protects hair colour against free radicals and strengthens the hair from within.
