Junior School Ages 3 - 12
Junior School at Lomond provides children from age three with the very best start to their education, with a nurturing environment that helps foster a love of learning and a sense of belonging for every child.
Welcome
Our experienced and passionate teachers and support staff bring energy, fun and wonder to every lesson, ensuring that our pupils are challenged and inspired at every stage of their education.
Housed within our Junior School building, our nursery children feel part of the Lomond School family from the very start. Our historic and treasured Clarendon building provides a warm and friendly environment for our youngest children to develop and grow.
Nursery and Pre-School
Central to our ethos is the conviction that learning is for life. For young children, this means that learning needs to be fun and engaging. It also means that we view learning in the most holistic sense, focusing on the whole child and being cognisant of their physical, emotional, personal and social development as well as starting them on their academic journey.
Our highly qualified staff skilfully support child-led learning indoors and out, ensuring that children can grow and develop at their own pace. Our provision is further enhanced by teaching from subject specialists in French, Music and PE.
Scientific research over the past 30 years has taught us that the most important period of human development is from birth to eight years old. During these years, the development of cognitive skills, emotional well-being, social competence and sound physical and mental health builds a strong foundation for success well into the adult years.
When children play, they learn. They solve problems, think strategically, relate to others, and manage life’s ups and Fromdowns.our earliest days, play is how we relate to the world, and to each other. When children have plenty of opportunities to learn playfully, they do what they do best: pursue their natural curiosity. And, as they do, they build skills and aptitudes they will keep for life.
When we think about preparing children for school, it can be easy to focus on academic areas such as reading and writing. However, it is important to take a holistic view and recognise that “preparing” children for this does not simply mean starting earlier. Play helps children learn how to learn and this is how we encourage children to become successful life-long learners and well-rounded human Atbeings.Lomond
Learning Through Play
Nursery we are dedicated to providing our young people with high quality play opportunities, including motor, cognitive and social and emotional skills. In playful experiences, children tap a breadth of skills at any one time without even knowing it. And that is the best kind of play!
From February the Pre-School children begin their formal transition programme, meeting with their new Junior 1 teacher or Junior School buddy on a weekly basis.
Transition to Junior 1
Our Nursery is an integral part of the school which makes the transition into J1 a seamless and natural process.
Throughout this extended period of transition, the children develop strong and supportive relationships with their teachers and peers, making them feel at home in school. J1 joiners who do not attend Lomond Nursery are also most welcome to join this transition programme.
By the time they reach August, moving up to Junior 1 is just another exciting adventure in their Lomond School journey!

“The nursery really is such a happy and exciting place. Regular online updates let me see all the amazing things that go on throughout the week, both in the nursery and out and about on the various outings and trips they take. My eldest has moved onto Junior 1 with ease, having grown in confidence both socially and in his learning and I know that this is down to the great start he has had in nursery.”
Throughout the Junior School years, strong foundations are set for every child to flourish socially, academically and creatively. Our pupils receive a rich, varied and flexible curriculum, combining an outstanding academic programme with a strong emphasis on health and wellbeing through involvement in sport and outdoor learning. We ensure a rigorous approach to core subjects and apply a more creative, inquiry-based approach to the wider curriculum. This allows us to build a truly unique programme to inspire our youngest learners, helping them see how things in our world are connected.

“The wraparound options both in nursery and school make life so much easier for our family. Knowing that we don’t have to juggle after school care and that our children can all be in the same place where I know they are safe and happy is so reassuring.”

Our Junior School curriculum is rich, varied and flexible. Children are encouraged to question and think creatively and critically. Our teachers are dedicated to delivering a stimulating and challenging inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that builds conceptual understanding, as well as supporting the development of knowledge and skills. Each year, our Junior School pupils will explore the following transdisciplinary themes through different contexts for learning: • Who we are • Sharing the planet • Where we are in place and time • How we organise ourselves • How the world works They will be able to help shape their learning based on their interests and their background knowledge. Through these different contexts, our young people learn a wide range of practical and academic skills across many subject areas. Our overall objective is to help children to develop a love for learning that stays with them for life. Curriculum
Our wider curriculum is built around the school’s Guiding Principles and includes specialist teaching in areas such as Art and Design, Cookery, Drama, Music and PE, as well as outdoor learning and adventurous activities such as climbing, sailing and skiing. This extended curriculum ensures our children are given opportunities and experiences which will help develop their characters and confidence in a safe and friendly environment. Surrounded by people who care about them and in a space where they are encouraged to take risks and step out of their comfort zone, each child has the space to discover new talents and develop skills with the support and encouragement of their teachers and peers.
Specialist Subjects
Years 6 and 7 in Junior School are known as Transitus 1 and 2. This provides our older pupils with the opportunity to explore their independence in a safe and supportive environment. Transitus is specifically designed to ensure children gain the skills and experience to underpin a successful and confident start to their secondary education. Children are steadily encouraged to become more independent in their learning and organisation, as well as being introduced to a wider range of specialist subjects.
Transitus classes are located in the Senior School building and pupils still benefit from the familiarity of a dedicated Junior School teacher. Their teacher continues to provide ongoing pastoral support, as well as core Maths and English teaching and the co-ordination of project work. Pupils who complete our Transitus years move onto Senior 1 with ease, surrounded by people who know them well, excited about their journey ahead.

“The Transitus years were so beneficial to our son in preparing him for life in senior school. When he moved onto S1 he knew many of the teachers, support staff and pupils which meant that there was very little adjustment and he really hit the ground running!”

Outdoor Education and Outdoor Learning are an important part of life at Lomond School. These opportunities allow our pupils to develop a wide range of skills and positive attitudes that will support them in the classroom and in their lives beyond Co-ordinatedschool.
Outdoor Learning
by our dedicated Head of Adventure and Service, outdoor areexperiencescarefully integrated into the curriculum and every child will experience sailing, canoeing, skiing, orienteering and climbing amongst other challenges within the core curriculum.
In addition to planned outdoor activities, our fleet of minibuses allow us to incorporate impromptu trips to our local woodland, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park or the waterfront whenever an opportunity for learning presents itself.
Clarendon Rangers
The Clarendon Ranger Award was created by our J1 and J2 teachers to ensure that the School’s Guiding Principles of Environmentalism, Internationalism, Adventure, Life-long Learning, Leadership and Service were fully embedded into our curriculum from Junior 1. The Clarendon Ranger programme embraces the School’s vision and values whilst delivering an unparalleled programme of structured, outdoor, active learning.
By visiting a wide range of different environments from forests to islands and beaches, they learn that it is their job to take care of the world that they inhabit. They learn about landscapes, habitats, plants, animals and protecting the environment. Most importantly, the pupils are taught to appreciate the beauty of our local surroundings and enjoy the freedom of being outdoors.
The curriculum is enriched by clubs and activities. Whether it be in sport, creative arts or in one of the many other activities available within our extra-curricular programme, our pupils gain skills outside the classroom, building confidence and developing qualities like leadership, courage and compassion which will serve them well in their future.
At Lomond School there truly is something for everyone and a chance for each pupil to discover their own unique talents.
Extra-Curricular
Extra-curricular activities are updated each term and take place during lunch and after school. Our Junior School pupils have lots of options to choose from throughout the year which span interests in sport, STEAM, creative arts and more. Supporting Busy Families
We recognise that, particularly for working parents, before and after school care can be both problematic and costly, often juggling various providers. At Lomond School, our wraparound services are included in the school fees, ensuring no additional cost for those who require the support of a longer school day.
Wraparound
Our wraparound service is specifically for our Junior School children and provides families with an early drop-off and late collection option. Our parents can be reassured that their children are safe and happy in school from 8 am – 5.30 pm.
Boarding Boarding is available at Lomond School from age 9 and our small, co-ed boarding house provides a warm and nurturing home from home for children from the UK and around the world. For families who require occasional support with childcare and want to ensure the continuity of their child’s education, flexible boarding or one-off arrangements can be accommodated depending on availability.
