Pre-IB Programme
Introduction Our Pre-IB Programme is dedicated to supporting young people aged between 15 to 17 in progressing seamlessly from national education systems into the International Baccalaureate. The benefits of the IB Diploma Programme and the IB Career-related Programme are well known and we believe that completing Pre-IB will allow our young people to benefit fully from everything the IB has to offer in Senior 5 and 6.

Pre-IB Programme Our one year course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to embark upon either the IB Diploma Programme or the IB Career-related Programme. Pupils taking this course will benefit from an integration into British culture, immersion in the English language and mastery of academic subjects from the IB modes of study. What Does the Course Look Like? Intensive, immersive EAL support (as required) 6 - 8 subjects from the IB modes of study: English as an Additional Language (EAL) or English Language B: either French or Spanish Individuals and Societies: History, Geography, Business and Economics Sciences: up to three of Biology, Chemistry, Physics Mathematics Creative Arts: Visual Arts, Drama/Theatre, Music To prepare them for both the subject specific disciplines and also the Core elements of the IBDP and IBCP, pupils on the pre IB pathway will also study the following the courses: Inquiry Learning Course: a bespoke course focusing on the on the thinking skills required to be a successful IB student Study Skills: preparation for independent study, research, academic writing, and academic integrity
Physical Education including competitive team sports, fitness and athletics Access to a wide a range of extra-curricular activities which fulfil the requirements of Creativity, Activity and Service: group volunteering initiatives, art competitions, access to the fully equipped school gym, and the opportunity to develop independent living skills in our boarding house, Burnbrae Participation in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Programme, with the opportunity to move to Gold in Senior 5 and Senior 6 Individual music tuition in a range of traditional and contemporary instruments, including voice Option to participate in school shows and musical events Access to a range of educational trips and excursions Possible Outcomes By studying the Pre-IB course at Lomond School you will move onto IB in sixth form with an excellent grasp on the your chosen subjects and the core competencies of the IB curriculum. You will also have the opportunity to sit examinations at the end of the Pre-IB year in order to gain National 5 qualifications.
Boarding at Lomond School As the West of Scotland’s only boarding school, living and studying at Lomond School offers a truly unique experience for boys and girls from the UK and around the world. As a co-educational house, siblings can live together under one roof and the mix of boys and girls of different ages engenders a real family feel, helping our boarders to settle in to life at Lomond School with ease. As Senior Boarders, Pre-IB and IB pupils will be afforded a number of freedoms and responsibilities that will help to prepare them for independent living when they eventually move on to life beyond school.
Living in Helensburgh Burnbrae House is located in a quiet residential area of Helensburgh, just a 5minute walk from the main school campus and ten minutes from the shopping area and seafront. The house has been purpose-built to ensure our boarders are comfortable and well catered for and being situated off the school campus helps our young people to feel like they are leaving school and coming 'home' each day. Consistently named as one of the top places to live in the UK, Helensburgh offers an unrivalled balance of easy access to the countryside, whilst also having excellent transport links to cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. This provides the perfect environment for our boarders, with a host of outdoor pursuits on their doorstep and culture and entertainment only a short trip from home.

Activities and Enrichment Weekends are a busy time for boarders with events and activities aplenty. By taking part in a broad range of extra-curricular activities and excursions, our young people nurture new and existing interests that encourage lifelong learning. It also provides our young people the opportunity to form strong bonds with their class and housemates through shared experiences and team sport. Whether they are skiing in the highlands, visiting Edinburgh Castle or canoeing and camping on Loch Lomond, boarding at Lomond School is a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
