1966 and All

1966 and All That How Sir Alf Ramsey won the World Cup Sir Geoff Hurst Tuesday 10 May 1.30-4pm BAFTA Join us, 50 years on, as we watch dramatic highlights and relive the day that England won the World Cup for the first and only time on Saturday 30 July 1966. As wild celebrations erupted inside Wembley Stadium and people poured onto the streets, it seemed there was just one man able to remain calm. Sir Alf Ramsey, the mastermind behind the nation’s greatest-ever sporting triumph, raised a warm smile but, remarkably, kept his composure as well as his seat on the bench.

About Sir Geoff Hurst Just five months into his international career, Sir Geoff Hurst made sporting history when he became the first and, so far, the only player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final. He won 49 caps and scored 24 goals. He played for West Ham, Stoke City and West Brom and also managed Chelsea for two years from 1979-81 before leaving football to forge a successful career in the insurance business until his retirement in 2002.

We explore 1966 and all that with hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst as he recalls the leadership and management techniques of the man who won the World Cup. Sir Alf, aka ‘The General’, possessed an astute football brain, was flexible with his tactics and as a technician was well ahead of his time. His greatest talent though was his ability to bring out the best in his players. Discover how at this inspirational event with unique first-hand insights from Sir Geoff.

The rapid growth of our digital world has brought huge advantages but we are also wary of its impact on our lives. Computers risk becoming less of a productivity tool and more like information fire hoses, drowning us in a deluge of data that can keep us from doing meaningful work. The devices in our hands connect us like never before, but they vie for our attention to the point where they are beginning to disconnect us from the real world. Dave Coplin, chief envisioning officer at Microsoft UK, argues we should stop thinking about the digital deluge as a problem and instead see it as an incredible opportunity. Technology offers our society so much but it is up to us, the humans, to rise to that potential.

About Dave Coplin Dave Coplin is the author of two books on the need to rethink the usage of technology in the modern world. He is currently the chief envisioning officer for Microsoft UK and an established thought leader on the role of technology in our personal and professional lives. He has worked across a wide range of industries and customers, providing strategic advice and guidance around the intersection of a modern society and technology both inside and outside the world of work.
