The Presentation Coach 5 steps to public speaking perfection Graham Davies Wednesday 20 January 9.30am-12pm Wellcome Collection

You probably hate giving presentations. You probably hate listening to them too. Why? Because most business presentations are too long, too detailed, too boring... and submerged under a blizzard of PowerPoint. The single most important presentational tool isn’t a slideshow – it’s you! Whether you’re speaking to one person across a table, 20 people in a boardroom or 1,000 people in a ballroom, it’s all about the words you say and how you say them. Graham Davies will reveal how to face any speaking challenge and communicate with clarity, confidence and impact. You’ll learn Graham’s bare knuckle 5-step process to effective presenting and how to apply it to all business speaking, from large-scale presentations to one–to–one client meetings.

About Graham Davies Graham Davies has used all the experience he has gained from his time as a criminal barrister and an international speaker to develop a highly transferable presentation methodology that can be adapted to any situation. He is the joint founder of the consultancy Straight Talking, which has a 15 year track-record in presentation coaching for a spectacular client list, including Tesco, IBM, Porsche, KPMG and UBS. Graham ensures that his clients can be as professional in their spoken communication as they are in every other aspect of their career.

Happiness by Design Finding pleasure and purpose at work Prof Paul Dolan Wednesday 20 January 1.30-4pm Wellcome Collection

How can we make it easier to be happy? Drawing on the latest cutting-edge research, Professor Paul Dolan will reveal that it’s not just how we think but how we act that affects our happiness. Being happy at work is important. Research shows that those who are unhappy at work are less productive, take more sick days and are poor problem solvers. Paul will explore how to create a happier working environment at this event. He’ll explain that being happy at work isn’t all about fun but about the fulfilment in what you do and crucially, the feedback you get from it. Find that unique balance of pleasure and purpose to create a truly happy workforce.

About Prof Paul Dolan Paul Dolan is a Professor of Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics and Political Science. An internationally renowned expert on happiness, behaviour and public policy, with over 100 peer-reviewed papers, Paul conducts original research into the measurement of happiness, its causes and consequences. Previously, Paul worked with Professor Daniel Kahneman at Princeton University.

Engage Engage Take your team from ordinary to extraordinary! Adrian Webster Tuesday 26 January 9.30am-12pm BAFTA

It’s people that make the difference and give us the competitive advantage. At this event, Adrian Webster will take you on a journey into his world of Polar Bear Pirates where everyday people deliver extraordinary results. The Polar Bear Pirates are highly focused, successful characters, who motivate everyone around them and, just like you, they love to have fun. Their quest is to take on the Sleepwalkers, the workplace zombies who are with you in body but just going through the motions, standing out like beacons of disappointment. Join Adrian and the Polar Bear Pirates in their mission to conquer complacency and re– awaken dormant talent. You’ll leave inspired and ready to get the best out of your team.

About Adrian Webster Adrian Webster is recognised as one of the most entertaining and effective motivational speakers in the UK. He has a very eclectic background – riot police officer, milkman and salesman were just a few of the entries on Adrian’s CV before he moved into the I.T. industry and discovered the ability to motivate and inspire others. Drawing on his own practical experience and years of research, Adrian brings to life a whole new world of fun, motivational terminology and characters that everyone can relate to.

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill The history behind Britain’s greatest leader Dr David Starkey Tuesday 26 January 1.30-4pm BAFTA

Find out more and book at www.londonbusinessforum.com or call 020 7600 4222

Sir Winston Churchill is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest leader. His steadfast refusal to consider defeat, surrender, or a compromise peace boosted British resistance, especially during the difficult early days of World War II. Churchill was particularly noted for his speeches and radio broadcasts, which helped inspire the British people and secure victory over Nazi Germany. Less well known is the huge impact and influence his ancestor John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough and Britain’s greatest general had on him. Churchill’s interest in his ancestor’s struggles against Louis XIV of France provided lessons from history that would prove instructive in his own duel with Adolf Hitler.

Dr David Starkey will explore what this means for modern organisations and leaders and how valuable history can be. He will argue that leaders can and should be guided by history, which judges people as they really are, not as we would like them to be. About Dr David Starkey Dr David Starkey is widely regarded as one of the world’s most eminent historians. He is the UK’s leading constitutional and monarchy expert and a colourful media personality. He appears frequently on television and radio, often invited onto such programmes as BBC’s Question Time and Newsnight. His books on Elizabeth I’s early life and Henry VIII’s six wives were Sunday Times bestsellers.

Presence

Presence A guide for aspiring power posers Amy Cuddy Wednesday 10 February 1.30-4pm British Museum

Presence is characterised by enthusiasm, confidence and the ability to inspire others but how can we bring these traits to life’s most challenging situations? Situations we often approach with fear and leave with regret. Amy Cuddy suggests we stop worrying about the impression we’re making on others and instead change the impression we’re making on ourselves. Cutting-edge science reveals that if we adopt behaviours reflecting power and strength, we liberate ourselves from the fears and doubts that obstruct us. Filled with practical tips on how you can use body language to influence others and yourself, Amy Cuddy will show how her ‘power poses’ can help us in high-pressure moments and increase our chances of success.

About Amy Cuddy Amy Cuddy is a social psychologist and professor at Harvard Business School, where she studies how nonverbal behaviour and snap judgments affect how people perceive others. Amy’s TED talk on body language has had nearly 30 million views and she was named one of 2012’s ‘Game Changers’ by TIME magazine. Amy is also a classically trained ballet dancer, which further informs her research on nonverbal communication.

Success The good psychopath’s guide Prof Kevin Dutton Tuesday 23 February 9.30am-12pm Wellcome Collection

What is a good psychopath? And how can thinking like one help you to be the best that you can be? Professor Kevin Dutton has spent a lifetime studying psychopaths; he has discovered that good psychopaths have a number of character traits that help them to excel in business. Unlike bad psychopaths, they can dial up or down qualities such as fearlessness, focus, conscience and empathy to get the very best out of themselves – and others. This session will explore how good psychopaths think differently and what that could mean for you. What do you really want from life? And how can you develop qualities such as charm, charisma, self-confidence and courage to get it?

The Good Psychopath Manifesto gives you a unique road-map to self-fulfilment in your professional and personal life. About Prof Kevin Dutton Professor Kevin Dutton is an expert on the science of social influence and is a research psychologist at the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford. He is author of Flipnosis: The Art of Split Second Persuasion and The Good Psychopath’s Guide to Success. He is equally at home (according to Andy McNab – and he should know) on a fruit and veg stall in London’s East End as he is on an academic podium.

This gamechanging exploration of how to build success will change the way you think about achievement.

Talent Ladders Help your best people climb to the top Richard Reeves Tuesday 12 April 1.30-4pm Wellcome Collection

The key to business success lies not only in finding talent in the marketplace, but finding and fostering it within organisations. Talent does not always come pre-packaged with the ‘right’ qualifications, university degree or CV; companies can save time and money by finding the skills they need among existing employees. This event will look at how to build robust internal ladders for upward mobility, recognising that real diversity in business today does not only mean gender, race and sexuality – it means diversity in social class background too. Rather than talent scouts, you need talent ladders.

He is currently a senior fellow in Economic Studies, policy director of the Centre on Children and Families, and editor-in-chief of the Social Mobility Memos blog at The Brookings Institute in Washington DC. The rapid growth of our digital world has brought huge advantages but we are also wary of its impact on our lives. Computers risk becoming less of a productivity tool and more like information fire hoses, drowning us in a deluge of data that can keep us from doing meaningful work. The devices in our hands connect us like never before, but they vie for our attention to the point where they are beginning to disconnect us from the real world. Dave Coplin, chief envisioning officer at Microsoft UK, argues we should stop thinking about the digital deluge as a problem and instead see it as an incredible opportunity. Technology offers our society so much but it is up to us, the humans, to rise to that potential.

About Dave Coplin Dave Coplin is the author of two books on the need to rethink the usage of technology in the modern world. He is currently the chief envisioning officer for Microsoft UK and an established thought leader on the role of technology in our personal and professional lives. He has worked across a wide range of industries and customers, providing strategic advice and guidance around the intersection of a modern society and technology both inside and outside the world of work.

Anything is Possible As one of Britain’s most successful Olympians and adventurers, James Cracknell brings new meaning to the word endurance. In 2010, he suffered a near fatal accident during his record attempt to cycle, run, row and swim from LA to New York. After a difficult six-month recovery period, James defied doctors’ expectations and went to the Canadian Yukon, completing the coldest race on earth. James will reveal what motivates him and offer his insights into building a high performance team, overcoming adversity and harnessing the mind-set to succeed against all odds.

About James Cracknell Since his victorious rowing career which led to a much deserved OBE, James Cracknell has taken on numerous challenges, which include winning the treacherous 50-day race across the Atlantic with Ben Fogle and taking part in the Amundsen Omega3 South Pole Race with Ben Fogle and Dr Ed Coats. An elected member of the British Olympic Association Athletes Commission, he is also a member of the Sports Honours Committee and Vice President of Headway (The Brain Injury Association).
