I commend all of you that have got the year off to a start with a Dry January but over here it's kinda like we never stopped, with the year already gracing us with a bunch of awesome gigs. And, as we rapidly fill up our calendar for the rest of the year, it doesn't look like the pace will let up. You might have noticed the mighty Wild Beasts on the front cover of this issue? We've not been able to stop listening to their fantastic new album 'Present Tense' and we had a great time getting to know them a little better. Read Danny's interview on page fourteen. Anyway, the month ahead is chock full of album releases we've been looking forward to forever, not least former cover star MØ’s, and we're ready to get stuck in. You can keep up with our antics on Instagram these days too, or just drop us an old fashioned line to say hi, we'd like that.

with FARAO
DUKE DUMONT
Recorded in Iceland with Tunng’s Mike Lindsay, the glacial surroundings of Reykjavik have certainly had a direct effect on Farao’s music. Having impressed in 2013 with ‘Tell A Lie’ and ‘Skin’, Norwegian Kari Jahnsen kicks off the new year with her most accomplished offering to date. ‘The Hours’ (lifted from her debut self-titled EP - out 10th February) is a finely crafted ballad that’s as sweet and endearing as they come, with just enough of an emotional tug to keep you coming back for more.
Words cannot put into context the sheer size of this song. Building on the successes of ‘The Giver’ and ‘Need U (100%)’, Duke Dumont and collaborator Jax Jones have unleashed a total monster with ‘I Got U’. With its nod to classic Whitney, sun-drenched steel drums and unabashedly stratospheric chorus, it has summer smash (and Number 1 hit) written all over it in neon pink crayon. Bookies favourite to “Do a Disclosure” in 2014.

MOLLY BEANLAND NIGHT DREAMS
MOLLY BEANLAND
Delightfully named Londoner Molly Beanland embraces a bold and lavish sound with her debut single ‘Night Dreams’. A new face on the ever expanding circuit of lovelorn female vocalists, her aesthetic is firmly planted in the eighties - specifically the power ballad territory. The song is a tale of hopeless addiction that counters in all the good bits: Greed, lust and obsession. Bleak perhaps, but really rather brilliant.
NAOMI PILGRIM MONEY
Pop lovers have been eager to hear more from Swedish vocalist Naomi Pilgrim since debut single ‘No Gun’ dropped late last year and, with ‘Money’, the initial buzz seems to be more than justified. A sassy and confident take on the Lady original, there’s no doubt that 2014 will bring Pilgrim many riches.
JEROME LOL FOOL
Jerome LOL returns with regular vocal collaborator Angelina Lucero to deliver a perfectly pitched slice of downbeat future pop. All brooding atmospherics and clattering beats, over the course of six short minutes ‘Fool’ gently eases its way into the sensory zones - augmented deliciously with Lucero’s yearning vocal. One for the night bus home.

NEW SOUNDS ---------KWABS BY GEMMA SAMWAYS
What with Sampha, MNEK and Sam Smith nominated in the BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll, and the latter winning that competition and a BRIT, there’s hardly a dearth of hyped, young, soul singers in the UK. And yet, it’s Kwabs – the man the industry tastemakers missed – that’s exciting us most. A second generation Ghanaian, Kwabena Adjepong studied Music and Jazz at the Royal Academy Of Music before getting his first taste of fame aged 20, appearing on BBC Two’s 2011 programme ‘Goldie’s Band: By Royal Appointment’. Look out for the (incredibly moving) footage of him performing his song ‘Lost Child’ at Buckingham Palace on YouTube: it’s more than feel-good TV fodder, it marks the advent of a remarkable musical talent. Once left to his own devices, Kwabs began sharing more compositions. First, 2013’s ‘Spirit Fade’ – five minutes of glitchy, electronic soul, produced by
The Invisible’s Dave Okumu – and then the slow-burning, digital-throb of ‘Last Stand’, which he co-wrote with London In Stereo favourite, SOHN. Indeed, when we spoke to the latter last year he enthused at length about Adjepong, describing him as “fantastic” and confiding that “there’s so much more to come from him.” He was, in part, alluding to ‘Wrong Or Right’, their latest collaboration, and the title track from Kwabs’ debut EP which is due 3rd February via Atlantic. It’s his most upbeat offering to date, finding his rich, deep, baritone tripping over synth arpeggios and digital ticks. More importantly, it’s proof that we’ve only glimpsed Kwabs’ capabilities thus far. LISTEN TO: LAST STAND ONLINE: @KwabsMusic facebook.com/KwabsOfficial
GROUPLOVE TA L E S F R O M T H E C I T Y. . . We’ve been to London a handful of times with the band, but last November we were lucky enough to spend a week there uninterrupted. On the last night before we were scheduled to fly home to Los Angeles, we arrived at the doors for our XFM interview with John Kennedy about an hour early, so we started strolling around the area. It was freezing outside (this was November 2013) and we needed a place to warm up. Coffee shop? No, time to grab a real beverage. We walked over to Garlic & Shots and proceeded to treat ourselves to the house special – a delicious mixture of vodka, tomato, garlic, chilies and other spices, appropriately named a Blood Shot. After warming up there, we decided it was time for a tattoo. We hobbled down the street to Frith Street and both Christian and myself got matching tattoos on our fingers. To ease the pain and pass the time, it was once again time for another Blood Shot. We strolled back into Garlic & Shots and had ourselves another serving of the drink. It tasted like you were taking a shot of Sriracha - but in the best way possible. Time now for the radio interview we came here for… we arrived back at the station to find the rest of our band giving us the evil eye—we were an hour late. But that’s why we love our band; no one gave us too hard of a time (except our manager). John Kennedy was gracious and didn’t give us any grief for being late… we really were there an hour early, but got caught up. we wanted to stay outside of what was expected of us
WILD BEASTS words: Danny wright PHOTOGRAPHY: LUCY JOHNSTON
We’re sat around a table in an East London members club with the four members of Wild Beasts, surrounded by a pride of exotic stuffed animals. It’s a bizarre environment though it seems to make complete sense for such a singular and wonderfully idiosyncratic band. As lions and zebras look on, we discuss their stunning new album ‘Present Tense’, which is by turns deft and beguiling as well as the boldest they’ve ever sounded. The buzz around the table is palpable and much of the interview focuses on reinvention and an excitement about a new way of working and writing. There’s that sense they feel more like a gang than ever, ready to take on the world again. We talked about the bravery to be dumb, falling out of love with being a ‘proper band’ and why making a new album is like a surfer being ready for a shark attack. It’s a fantastic album. Has it turned out how you imagined it would? Tom: I think we’re all happy that it is what it needed to be. At this stage in our careers I think we certainly needed to take another turn. Hayden: Part of the pact of being in a band is accepting that having too fine a design for the album would be denying all the possibilities and beautiful accidents. We certainly didn’t have a blueprint of what we wanted it to be.
Was it a different way of writing to ‘Smother’? Tom: In some ways it was more constructed and computer first. We finally fell out of love with the idea of being a ‘proper band’ and wanted to marry the mess of a band with detailed production. Did you feel you needed to recharge your batteries before making this record? Hayden: There was a sense of not wanting to go and do another ‘Smother’. To do something predictable would have defined our own ceiling so we had to go away and re-remember those reasons we were flung together in the first place. Was ‘Wanderlust’ chosen as a single to show this new direction? Tom: It’s definitely a signpost. It was the first one we attacked in the studio and got “the sound”. Hayden: It’s kind of the mission statement, a way of re-marking our patch... in an aggressive manner but also in a fun way.
Now you’re four albums in do you have that confidence to do what you want? Tom: Hayden’s always saying he’s “made his peace with oblivion”. Hayden: A surfer goes out with the belief they’re not going to get attacked by a shark. It doesn’t make it any less likely; it just means you’re confident enough to do it. And that’s the trick we keep playing on ourselves before every album. If you’re always thinking about the critical reception you’d chicken out of everything. You said you wanted to “repel the beards”? Tom: What I meant by that is that ‘Smother’ was a step into adult themes and we wanted to stay outside of what was expected of us. It’s that bravery to be dumb. And, lyrically, was it a conscious decision to be more straightforward? Hayden: Our music always requires the benefit of the doubt – but this time we wanted to say “This is what I mean, not what I’m alluding to”.
The word political has also been used a lot, is that something you concur with? Hayden: It’s a result of the consciousness of now. We have a right wing Prime Minister who doesn’t care about the arts and, though it’s not life and death, it’s what we care about. So it’s political by nature but it’s not speaking about politics. You also changed producers, what did Lexxx and Leo (Abrahams) bring to the record? Ben: They’re really good guys, they didn’t come in with really big egos and they really cared. Chris: It was a wrench not to work with Richard. If you’d asked us after ‘Smother’ we would’ve said we’d be working with him but we wanted to make a leap in sound and wanted a fresh perspective for it. And finally, do you feel like the same band as when you started out? Ben: We’ve been in the music industry for a long time now and there’s stuff
that’s hard to take, like when it’s a 16-year-old kid singing a Johnny Cash song on X Factor and that’s what’s selling. Hayden: You live within an ever-present now in the music industry. You have to dispose of your past very quickly and be prepared to accept that your old songs don’t really matter for shit on the front line of putting a new record out. We’re more of a team and more of a collective than ever but we’ve also broken rules we never thought we’d break. Present Tense is released February 24th via Domino The band play Brixton Academy April 1st

HALLS LOVE TO GIVE No Pain In Pop // February 10th
The growth of Halls over the past two years or so has been entirely interesting to witness; a rarity in the modern age that an act is allowed to grow at their own pace and creative whim. ‘Ark’, the 2012 debut from the South London musician, saw the man behind
the moniker, Sam Howard, bloom from budding bedroom producer to an artist in his own right, switching focus from samples to more organic instrumentation. Now, with ‘Love To Give’ coming just a mere fifteen months later, its follow-up sees Howard flourish further, tightening his craft and expanding his sonic footprint. With such a confident and assured debut it would be foolish of Howard to switch things up too drastically on its successor. ‘Love To Give’ features all the trademarks that garnered such acclaim first time round (celestial atmospherics and Howard's longing vocal still remaining the focus here), but with more space to roam among an otherwise claustrophobic sound. Seeming a thing of both steadied growth and continuing flux, the record sees Halls take great leaps in many respects. With string sections and organs added to Howard’s palette, many of the songs veer off at increasingly unexpected tangents. The album’s centrepiece ‘Aria’ breaks down altogether before elegantly piecing itself back together, whilst twin closer ‘Body Eraser / Avalanche’ – as the title might suggest – sees the walls fall in altogether, ending the LP in frenzied catharsis. Luke Morgan Britton
BECK MORNING PHASE
Virgin EMI // February 24th For all his shapeshifting eclecticism, it’s the stripped back ‘Sea Change’ which has always been regarded as one of Beck’s finest records. And ‘Morning Phase’, his first album in five years (well, one that doesn’t require the ability to read sheet music), sees him revisit that sound. There are moments of sublime beauty that only Beck can deliver. ‘Blue Moon’ is swooning, yearning and lovely, while the majestic strings of ‘Wave’ envelop you in their noir-ish world. It can feel too one-paced at times, but tracks like ‘Blackbird Chain’ and ‘Turn Away’, songs which could sound leaden and morose in less skilled hands, are shaped into something shimmering and powerful by an artist who’s proved himself to be a master of reinvention for twenty years now. Danny Wright
MØ // NO MYTHOLOGIES TO FOLLOW Chess Club // March 10th
Scandinavia is showing no sign of relinquishing its position as the standout purveyor of electro-pop: This much anticipated debut record has seemed quite a long time coming but the old cliché is emphatically appropriate. The twelve tracks embody everything that enticed the blogosphere back in 2012: Attitude, passion and a thoroughly empowering knack for melody. The songs fans know and love – ‘Glass’ with its festive arpeggiated opening, ‘Pilgrim’s brilliant trumpet refrain and the desperate cries of ‘Waste Of Time’ – are joined by equally punchy counterparts as producer/guitarist Ronni Vindahl colours the record with the brooding power of ‘Fire Rides’, a warm calypso hue in ‘Slow Love’ and 80s pop perfection in ‘Don’t Wanna Dance’. Her eclectic influences, from Spice Girls to Major Lazer, all play their part with the former shining through in the numerous infectious choruses and girl power flavour, and the latter from the beat-heavy production in the likes of Diplo featuring ‘XXX 88’. Worth the wait indeed. George O’Brien
HOSPITALITY // TROUBLE Fire Records // Out Now
It’s difficult to plan for a bad hangover, but most seasoned drinkers will, if nothing else, have a core of two or three albums (looking at you, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning) on which they can count to soothe their whiskey addled brains back to sobriety. Hospitality’s Trouble, in its soft fuzz and warm, familiar arrangements is a “eureka!” moment in one’s search for the quintessential “oh god, even my hair hurts” soundtrack. Charming, melodic and, yet, not at all bland; rarely has a band’s name correlated more fittingly with their musical output. Jack Urwin
ANGEL OLSEN BURN YOUR FIRE FOR NO WITNESS
Jagjaguwar // February 17th Cutting her teeth in Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s The Cairo Gang band, Missouri-born Angel Olsen hits new heights on her second solo album. Now heading a trio, the guitar/bass/drums band sound relaxed and having fun with their classy southern-tinged, Pixies-meets-The Carter Family rock. But it’s Angel’s three tracks without the band that shine. ‘White Fire’ firmly sets the mood to gloomy as she tenderly eeks out “Everything is tragic/It all just falls apart” over a droning electric guitar. They’re obviously important songs to Angel since she chose the reverberating twang of ‘Unfucktheworld’s ramshackle acoustic guitar riff and dizzying multi-tracked singing to kick off the album in its glorious, pensive intensity. GARDENS & VILLA DUNES
HANNAH PEEL FABRICSTATE EP My Own Pleasure // February 24th
Fabricstate is the kind of record only Hannah Peel could have made. It's the sound of an incredibly versatile and uniquely creative musician maturing into the fully assured author hinted at on 2011's full length ‘The Broken Wave’. Seamlessly blending warm organic analogue sonics with gently pulsating electronic elements it creeps into your conscious mind at a deliciously slow pace. First track ‘Silk Road’, built around delicate strings and soft vocal refrains, is the perfect opener but it's on ‘Desolation Row’ and ‘Chloe’ that Fabricstate really comes into its own, Peel's flare for drama so perfectly captured in these demanding, insistent and intensely emotional creations. Lauren Down
Secretly Canadian // February 4th Frothy and euphoric, ‘Dunes’, the latest offering from California’s Gardens & Villa, possesses an infectious bounce that is deliriously addictive. The captivating groove of ‘Domino’ snakes itself around your eardrum within seconds, while ‘Echosassy’s icy barbs of Joy Division flavoured riffs are soothed by gooey synths, their harshness seemingly at odds with Chris Lynch’s seductive croon. Moments of calm do linger, ‘Minnesota’ is particularly arresting, but it’ll be the pure bubblegum pop that you ultimately opt to savour. With bags more potential than a grimy Spanish timeshare, you’ll be hard pressed to unearth a record that will banish the January blues with such uplifting abandon. Lee Wakefield
LET'S WRESTLE LET'S WRESTLE
Fortuna POP! // February 10th Always on the tip of your tongue, Let's Wrestle are the quintessential 'former hype band', and one of the the remaining members of the indie class of 2008. Their self-titled third album has moved beyond the punk roots of their previous releases, with the London trio releasing a more sedate and well behaved record this time around. It lacks the urgency and energy of their previous outings, and unfortunately that makes the album come across as a bit lethargic and uninspired. 'Let's Wrestle' is an overall pleasant experience, but it isn't one that will captivate its listeners. Jack McKenna
KATY B LITTLE RED
Columbia / Rinse // February 10th Now every pop star on the planet’s moving at 140BPM and/or dropping tokenistic references to “The Club”, the return of the real deal is something to be celebrated. Staying true to her Rinse FM roots, Katy B’s worked with Geeneus, George Fitzgerald, Jacques Greene and Artwork to create big-hearted pop that’s designed first and foremost for the dance floor. Lead single ‘5AM’ is still a stand-out, as is the Sampha-starring shimmer of ‘Play’, while vintage house cut ‘Aaliyah’ finds Katy silkily swapping lines with Jessie Ware for a narrative re-imagining of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’. Gemma Samways
ST VINCENT ST VINCENT
Universal // February 24th On the cover, sequinned with lilac roots, Annie Clark could be the terrifyingly serene queen of an ominous dystopia. This alternate universe is conjured vividly by the record's sonic identity: a delicious swamp of murky synths, discordant backing choirs and demented horn sections. Not to mention the panting. We can only speculate on Clark's preferred style of ruling in this hypothetical future, but lyrically her album has a one track mind from album highlight 'Prince Johnny's' coy couplet: “And we had such a laugh of it/Prostrate on my carpet”, to the shopping list mundanity of 'Digital Witness': “Take out the garbage/Masturbate”. Collaborating with David Byrne should be a hard act to follow, but Clark's fourth solo album totally raises the bar. Lucy Dearlove
SPEEDY ORTIZ REAL HAIR EP
Carpark // February 11th You can't move for folk negging on garage rock in 2014. Sure, electronic music is lapping up its perfectly well-deserved time in the sun, but look beyond castrated torchbearers like The Strokes and their simpering, entitled NYC offspring (Parquet Courts, I'm pointing my gnarled finger of disapproval your way) and you'll find some choice guitar-based bites. Massachusetts' Speedy Ortiz are a splendid example, churning out bundles of scratchily-realised thrills and in absolutely no need of a passing zeitgeist to vindicate their existence. Equal parts Eric's Trip squall and perfectly scuzzed out pop a la The Amps, 'Real Hair' is tried, true and effortlessly lovable. Tom Edwards

'Wonderland' is the most bizarre and brilliant record we've heard since, well, since Tough Alliance man Eric Berglund became ceo in 2010 and released his debut full length 'White Magic’. The new album, released on February 3rd, is incredible for many of the same reasons as its predecessor, but primarily because it exists in the present. It doesn't buy into nostalgic music trends and it doesn't concern itself too much with what might be, but rather with what is here, what is now. It's about letting go, which, as we delve further into 2014, seems appropriate. So, for all those looking for that release, we think it would probably be a good idea to delve into the mind of Wonderland's creator. You might realise something. You might not. It doesn't really matter though, only CEO can judge me. Speaking to Pitchfork in 2010 you said the world used to be “a scary chaos, a whore house, a war zone” but now it was your “oyster”. How do you feel things have changed for you since 2010? Do you still feel you spend a lot of your time lost in such places? Sorta kinda. I had some deep revelations back then and what was revealed to me didn't go hand in hand with certain places of my universe. My awe for the new was strong enough to shadow these places for a while but then I had to snap out of the awe to be able to continue my evolvement and materialize my insights in the relative world.
And of course the demons returned, to some extent. But what I finally came to see then was that the best way to turn demons into angels is to patiently caress them with your awareness. Just experience what they feel and keep a loving eye on them. Never deny them, never shut them out. They will just hit back harder than ever as soon as you lower your guard. So now I try my hardest to keep all of my universe illuminated, especially the dark parts. They've become a lot smaller thanks to that. I still feel like a lil' whore or a wildin' warrior sometimes, but the feeling never stays too long these days.
Do you feel more confident in your solo adventures the second time around? I feel a lot less anxious in general about it but less confident that people will be able to relate to it. That's fine though. I have no expectations on people enjoying Wonderland 'cause I know a lot of people are not ready for the ride. I didn't even dare hoping my friends would be. I feel confident 'cause I know I have done what I had to. Last time around I thought the world would change dramatically when I released the record but if it did I sure as hell didn't notice. This time I'm just happy that I have done something. In 2010 everything was about the lower case, you said you had developed an aversion to capital letters but hoped you would get over it soon. Everything seems to be in capital letters this time around? Does this mean your aversion has been overcome? Do you think it speaks to anything bigger within you spiritually? Yeah, I somehow killed that without noticing, I just started tagging the drafts for the album with capital letters. I still love lower case though so it's all good between the three of us. I think it says that I am cooler. Yep, definitely a lot cooler. The statement you released alongside your album announcement seemed to speak, at least to me, a lot about personal and internal freedom – of the importance of just letting go and feeling. Is that something you hope your music will stir in others? Got that right! We are all so unconsciously obsessed with what we think we should feel. Asking ourselves if what we experience goes along with our ideas of who we are. All of that gets in the way of life. Just let the
mind kick the fuck back for a while and let life wash over you in any way it wants to. What is this new record about to you? What are you expressing? Life, I hope. How I feel it. Wonderland may seem fantastical but to me it is about reality. I've tried my absolute hardest to paint an accurate and full picture of what I feel. I'm pretty sure I have failed but I don't think I ever came as close. Sometimes fantastical images are the only way to express reality. Who has helped you realise your vision? Both in life in an abstract sense and more practically in terms of who your collaborated with on this new album? Chief keef, Hubert Benoit, Jon Bones Jones, a girl called Diana, Squadda Bambino, Yves Klein, Kenzo Takada, Jennifer Lawrence and all my other shawtys. And I can't forget W.G. Sebald. My dear friends Dan Lissvik and Kendal Johansson helped out a lot too! There feels like there is a greater sense of hope, of light and of life to this album compared to your last – would you agree with that? I do. Even if it's super honest which sometimes leads through darkness, it's still more hopeful cause it's more real. Reality is always hopeful. Nothing real can ever be threatened, baby.

CASS MCCOMBS Queen Elizabeth Hall January 13th Who is Cass McCombs? We know he was born in 1977 in California, has no fixed abode, and that he’s as acclaimed as he is prolific. The rest is a bit blurry. Notoriously taciturn, he rarely grants interviews, so a live show is really the only opportunity most have to unravel the enigma. Unsurprisingly, tonight he doesn’t do banter. Or posturing. Or smiling, much. Not that he’s dour or withdrawn; he’s just so consumed in making music that chat seems superfluous So, after a quick, “Hey, what’s up?” he and his three-piece band launch into ‘Big Wheel’ before we can respond. From that two note guitar lick and 50
rolling groove onwards, he brings fresh urgency to material old and new. The once-amiable chug of ‘Love Thine Enemy’ now has teeth, and though ‘Angel Blood’ is backed by wistful pedal steel, McCombs’ vehement enunciation adds a potent sense of longing. Pre-encore, he ends with killer quartet ‘I Went To The Hospital’, ‘That’s That’, ‘The Same Thing’ and ‘Lionkiller’, the latter’s spidery riff sounding especially stormy. Concluding a highlight-heavy gig with the mournful alt-country of ‘County Line’, his falsetto cracks and there’s a momentary flicker of vulnerability. Naturally, he’s gone before you can glimpse more. Gemma Samways
SEPTEMBER GIRLS // JOANNA GRUESOME The Lexington // January 9th
Gritty noise, cheeky garage, and fuzzy dream pop all came together in one night when September Girls and Joanna Gruesome stepped on stage. Dublin-based September Girls gets the party started with dark-tinted jangle-pop. The tsunami of guitar, contortions and 60s drum patterns built up menacingly settling the ground for the Cardiff-based punky five-piece of Joanna Gruesome. Banging around like teenagers and conquering the stage as if at some unforgettable house party, Joanna Gruesome build on their record by adding a tongue-in-cheek attitude to the performance, giving the night a nonchalant kiss-off. STEPHEN MALKMUS The Forum // January 16th
“Well, that got that one out the way” deadpans our reluctant indierock hero/post-grunge dreamboat spokesman/any other rejected title, as ‘Lariat’ comes to an abrupt halt. You’ve got to feel for Malkmus a bit; he knows what we want, we want the songs that rhyme “venison” and “Tennyson”, we want the fun songs, live. And, yeah, maybe we want some Pavement. Tonight he meets us halfway, and we all win. Animated and joyful ‘Chartjunk’ shines from the selection off the latest album, whilst ‘Stick Figures In Love’ and ‘Jenny and the Ess-Dog’ highlight how rich his post-Pavement career has been. Speaking of which...we get ‘Harness Your Hopes’. It’s enough. Dave Rowlinson

BY SUMMER CAMP’S ELIZABETH SANKEY We've recently finished our first film soundtrack for 'Beyond Clueless', a documentary about teen films by Charlie Lyne. I've always been drawn to film soundtracks. You know, those moments of euphoria you feel when watching someone gorgeous walk down a corridor in slow motion, an obscure Led Zeppelin track filling your eardrums? Well luckily they can be yours to take home: just buy the soundtrack and you too can be lost in a story, you can feel what it's like to do something exhilarating. For example having an affair with a US senator, or walking out of your job triumphantly - the whole office inexplicably watching you go in awed silence - or killing a man with your bare hands. Feeling the bones in his face smash beneath your knuckles. Stick on 'The Electrician' and let Scott Walker take you there. The marriage of sound and screen can be beautiful, and I find it unendingly interesting. Sometimes films can be dirging, messy crap, but if the music is right, there's always the chance they will stun you with a moment of absolute perfection. Likewise a film stripped of its audio accompaniment seems empty and awkward. You're immediately aware that you're watching people being filmed saying words to each other that someone else wrote for them. Music gives films context, a way of introducing the audience to the narrative. 'Donnie Darko' does it really well. The hallway scene where we're sped through locker love-ins, pre-teen girls choreographing a dance to 'Notorious' by Duran Duran, snorted cocaine, and a thoroughly upset teacher. All with Tears for Fears' 'Head Over Heels' tying it together perfectly. So much good music has been discovered thanks to film soundtracks, for example 'You and Me' which was an unreleased demo by “lost” soul band Penny and the Quarters. It was used on 'Blue Valentine' and has since become adored by heartbroken Ryan Gosling fans the world over. Film soundtracks are a doorway into a more cinematic life, and who doesn't want that?
