WELCOME Wolf Alice (London in Stereo Feb ‘13)
I've spent the best part of 24 hours trying to work out what to say here about the fact that this issue marks our second birthday as a physical publication, but I'm finding it harder than I thought I would. It simultaneously feels like it was a life time ago, and just yesterday. Wolf Alice (our first cover band) have gone from packing out The Old Blue Last to playing Shepherd’s Bush Empire, and we've grown from a humble following to what feels like, to us, an extraordinary amount of people paying attention to what we do. DOE
We'll be celebrating with a party on March 11th at Birthdays, having a good old knees-up to celebrate the ridiculous whirlwind that it's been, and you're most definitely invited. And I know I say it a lot, but you can never really say it too much; thank you, to everyone who contributes to the magazine, reads it, supports it and, most importantly, enjoys it. You guys are the best.

EAST INDIA YOUTH
EAST INDIA YOUTH CAROUSEL
When young William Doyle, aka East India Youth, took to the stage at Heaven in London on Thursday November 13th last year, it marked a turning point of sorts. Not only was it one of the last times he would play a set entirely culled from material from his Mercury nominated album Total Strife Forever, but it was the first time he debuted material from his much anticipated second album for XL. And if the song he played that night, Carousel, is anything to go by, it will be a monumentally good album. John Doran
THE MOONLANDINGZ MAN IN ME LYFE
Who are these mysterious psych bastards and what is this oil stained masterpiece of buzzsaw guitars, raga-like chanting and groaning synths? The Moonlandingz sound like the sort of hot-breathed, greasy-haired no marks who want to finger you behind a bus stop, steal your fag money and then run off with a semi on. (And is it a coincidence that this sounds like a mischievous collaboration between the Fat White Family and Eccentronic Research Council?) John Doran
CLAUDE SPEEED TRAUMZEUGE
The opener of Sun Czar Temple, Stuart Turner’s new EP, is a none-finer distillation of the ambient producer’s work. The first half saturates slow-shifting piano chords with caustic distortion, gradually subsiding into the second, the bare bones of a gorgeous, Mogwai-esque song, lyrics of small-hours reflection lying on the edge of earshot. Laurie Tuffrey
CARTER TUTTI PLAY CHRIS & COSEY SIN
A contemporary reworking of a track taken from Chris & Cosey's 1991 album Pagan Tango, the seduction of the original spills out onto a canvas of new throbbing modulations. Cosey Fanni Tutti's cries of "lay me on a bed of sin" are a warm embrace laced with the tang of leather. Sophie Coletta
CLAUDE SPEEED
BILL WELLS & AIDAN MOFFAT THIS DARK DESIRE
The prolific Aidan Moffat returns with The Most Important Place In The World, a brilliant second album in collaboration with Bill Wells. This is the first track to be taken from it, a slow-moving ode to sex in the city, piano and soft trumpet rubbing up against Moffat's distorted vocal whisper like two new acquaintances, tongues tied in a drizzly alleyway. FUTURE BROWN By their very definition, all supergroups ought to be amazing. So why aren’t they? Perhaps because they’re invariably the vanity projects of rock dinosaurs, who’ve long since sacrificed creative ambition in favour of feathering the nest egg. Perhaps because success breeds ego, and the sound of mutual back-slapping shrouds any pleas for quality control. Perhaps because it’s a damn sight easier to trade off your name than it is to tread new ground. Depending on your levels of optimism, Future Brown are either rescuing the reputation of the supergroup, or they’re the exception that proves the rule. Either way, they’re one of the most exciting production outfits you’ll encounter in 2015. Comprised of Hyperdub’s Fatima Al Qadiri, Lit City Trax label boss J-Cush, and Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda of
Nguzunguzu, the quartet are all trailblazers in their own right. Collectively, they’re arguably even greater than the sum of their parts. Sucking in sounds from rap, R&B, reggaeton, Chicago bop and sino grime, they make sense of a melee of influences, spitting out sleek dancefloor cuts that reflect their distinctly global outlook. Combine this with a revolving cast of guest vocalists – including members of Ruff Skwad and associates of Roll Deep, plus rising stars Kelela, Maluca Mala and Tink – and the result is an eponymous debut that’s as mind-bending as the magic-mushroom trip that inspired their moniker. TALES FROM THE CITY by Shinies
The first time in my adult life that I visited London was to record on a tugboat on the Thames. Before that it was two brief visits, once when I was eight after visiting Legoland in Windsor and then again at twelve, when London was the only place you could sit on a fucking massive Ferris wheel. That time I bought a Clash T-shirt. I thought I was Joe Strummer. The brevity, I guess was for no other reason than it was miles away from where I grew up, geographically, and the more I think about it (despite everyone’s best attempts to deny it) culturally as well. This isn’t a north / south divide rant, you could live in Watford or Staines and feel the same way. If you came from where we came from, Manchester was exotic. Our first time as a collective in the capital, we drove in a borrowed car, ignorant of the congestion charge, and cut a 7” single. It was the first time we’d been in a recording studio. I’ll never forget driving out of central London in the middle of the night and listening back to something the four of us had made for the very first time. Something we’d created in a damp basement in our house
and now it was real song you could listen to on a tinny car stereo. It was such a kick. I’d never felt so attached to a stretch of motorway before. Big shout out to the M25 for being a part of such a weird experience. Since then we’ve come to love and loathe London in equal measures and visited it frequently. We’ve locked ourselves out of vans (my bad), had inter-band fights in fried chicken shops (my bad again), crashed cars (not my fault that time!) but also formed relationships with people who we would have never met otherwise. At the risk of sounding soppy, the best thing that has come out of driving eight-plus hours or sitting on a Megabus for even longer on regular occasions, is because a shitload of people live there, some of which we’ve become very close friends with. London’s alright I guess. If it was good enough for Joe Strummer, it’s good enough for me. Adam Davison Shinies release Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere via Dirty Bingo February 2nd. They play The Shacklewell Arms February 13th.

TENNIS Words: Gemma Samways
“It’s definitely been a long time coming,” admits Alaina Moore. Speaking from a hotel room in Vancouver, the Tennis frontwoman is reflecting on the release of their latest album, Ritual In Repeat, which is arriving in the UK five months after its US release, and an entire eighteen months on from its completion. Turns out this deferred street date was probably the least problematic part of the process. “Patrick [Riley] and I struggled with writer’s block for about a year, writing songs and then throwing them away,” Moore recalls. “We eventually realised that removing the mystery – and reducing writing to this unromantic, tedious, monotonous routine – was the key to producing again. And when you imbue any constricting routine with personal or spiritual significance, it becomes a sacred ritual.” This painful process doesn’t just jar with Tennis’ whole sensibility – founded on the breezy indie-pop of 2011’s Cape Dory, an album inspired by a yachting sojourn – it’s at odds with the effortlesslymelodic end-product. Variously produced by Spoon’s Jim Eno, The Shins’ Richard Swift and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, Ritual In Repeat is by far the duo’s most sonically ambitious set yet, extending from the lush dream-pop of Viv Without The N to the acoustic balladry of Wounded Heart, via forays into funk on Night Vision and I’m Callin’. Moore credits their expanded range to a “more autonomous writing process”, in which she and Riley would work-up ideas separately, before exchanging demos for the other to finish. “I imagined I’m Callin’ as a piano ballad,” she laughs. “When I brought it to Patrick, he gave it a bassline and a disco beat.” Describing Tennis’ sound as the overlap in the Venn diagram of their separate tastes, Moore admits her own songwriting is rooted in the “strong vocal melodies” of her childhood. “I had an incredible upbringing, but it was extraordinarily sheltered, conservative and religious. The music I listened to was mostly classical, or old American standards, or songs from musical theatre – singers like Judy Garland and Peggy Lee.” She credits her creativity on this record to discovering her “patron saints of songwriting” – Laura Nyro, Carole King and Judee Sill – and feeling “emboldened by these discoveries.” Consequently, Ritual In Repeat is also the first Tennis record that foregrounds the female narrative, confronting the concept of maternal altruism (Needle And A Knife) and the religious guilt that can surround the female experience of sex (Bad
“...the feminine experience is not seen as universal; the masculine experience is.” Girls). Why wait three albums to tackle those experiences?“ I think I felt timid about my voice being female,” Moore muses. “When I first started writing melodies, I would imagine a male voice singing them. Even though my perspective on the world is that of a woman, the feminine experience is not seen as universal; the masculine experience is. And it bothers me that work done by men appeals to everyone, whereas work done by women only appeals to women. So, for a long time, I worked really hard to make my writing androgynous. “Even now, I don't want anything I write to feel polemic or sententious, but I do want those experiences to be
there for anyone who wants to find them. And I like to use religious imagery, the way that Judee Sill would. She was an atheist, a heroin addict and a prostitute, but she wrote these beautiful, vivid, spiritual songs with biblical metaphors, because it’s the language that she inherited. I feel the same.” The result is a Tennis record that, for the first time, is as rich in meaning as it is in melodic beauty; a development that was definitely worth the wait. RECORD OF THE MONTH FATHER JOHN MISTY
I LOVE YOU, HONEYBEAR The thought of an ex-drummer from parent-approved beard-popularisers, Fleet Foxes, setting down sticks one last time, donning sunglasses and going out on the town drugging, drunking, screwing about and screwing up might sit a little incongruously with you. You may suspect you’re gonna be faced with, I dunno, Nick Cave on a Segway or a budget Bukowski. Goddamn, is I Love You, Honeybear ever gonna skew some expectations. Ostensibly this is a concept album, revolving round a fight to be the kind of person that can deal with the commitment needed to experience real love completely, but, to hell with that. All the highs here are found in our anti-hero’s belligerent misanthropy; in the fuck-ups and regrets, in the mind-blowing lyrical finesse with which he paints these situations, especially during Bored In The USA when, Bella Union faced with everything he ever wanted, he gazes into the February 9th stupefying abyss of normality - like Goodfellas’ Henry Hill in witness protection - and wants out. Sweat drips off every Stand Out Tracks: extraordinary moment, and it’s impossible not to be swept The Ideal Husband along by the rush of self-destruction, impossible to control I Love You, Honeybear your pulse amidst the hollering, clattering, repetition of Bored In The USA “I came by at seven in the morning!” in The Ideal Holy Shit Husband. Sure, there are questions about whether we should be thrilling to this or whether we should be condemning facebook.com/fatherjohnmisty the piece of shit for acting like he does, but - and here’s @fatherjohnmisty the suckerpunch - such is his borderline lameness, so innately human are his failings, that condemning him will Live: Village Underground February 26th only result in shifting the stare inward and, well, nobody wants to be doing that. Not without a bourbon or two. Musical touchstones? Think the fevered imagination of 70s Elton John sat at his piano, think steel-pedal country trad, think mariachi blast, think soulful choirs, think string sections touching the very heavens - all this, and yet somehow so contained and focused. Lord only knows what he’ll do with them, but this breathtaking album will surely see Father John Misty walk away with all those end of year trophies. Dave Rowlinson
JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ
VESTIGES & CLAWS Peacefrog Records // February 16th The little touches, the flourishes, the flairs: it doesn't take long for José González's latest record to get under your skin. It's almost as though the music gets to know you as much as you get to know the music. The soft timbre of his voice, the crisp handclaps and guitar-side clatters, the gently rousing strums and the snapping solo strings reach out as if to start a dialogue with the listener about what it means to be alive. And that's the heart of this record. Vestiges & Claws is a fragile, exposed, reassuringly stark meditation on the human condition, with a warmth and life-affirming beauty that successfully “reminds our restless souls of the beauty of being here at all”. Lauren Down
DALTON
DALTON Fierce Panda // February 23rd If there’s one thing lazy music hacks love, it’s being able to pigeonhole artists; an invented portmanteau genre, a couple of bands to which they can claim homage is paid, and boom, job done. Nate Harar, the motherfucker behind Dalton, had other ideas for us. To his credit, the result is pretty astounding, his debut veering from delicate piano-led ballads to lo-fi slacker-pop to rough-edged punk to bleak, dreamy minimalism to anthemic college-rock to country-flecked folk and, Jesus Christ, the list goes on. Crucially, Dalton’s disparate collection of tracks avoids tripping over itself into a directionless heap, the album drawn together and contextualised by the presence of thoroughly brilliant songwriting throughout. Intriguing, smart and catchy, you’ve sort of got to ask: why can’t all music be this great? Jack Urwin
IBEYI
IBEYI XL Recodings // February 13th French-Cuban twin sisters, Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz, stand out from the crowd: striking, honest and creatively daring, they’ve already enjoyed notable stamps of approval, topping The Guardian's 2015 list and signing to relentless trend-setters XL. Their debut record is a triumph, thanks to a wonderfully intelligent blend of religious, traditional - indeed their late father was a cajón player with Buena Vista Social Club - and classy contemporary. From the other-worldly Oya to the melancholic Mama Says, the pair showcase undeniable raw talent and that innate vocal and rhythmic relationship that comes from a blood-tie. Broken-up by acapella interludes, Ibeyi is real, eye-opening, refreshing and there's no doubt the young twins are, as their songs’ often divine themes suggest, a force to be reckoned with. George O’Brien LiS 19
PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING THE RACE FOR SPACE Test Card // February 23rd Given their specific, perhaps limited, shtick of crafting songs around vintage audio clips, PSB faced a challenge in kicking things on from their hit 2013 debut. Their solution is this concept album about the Cold War clash for celestial supremacy, facilitated by access to rare BFI footage. Yet the band’s ambient electro-rock leans too heavily on the gravitas of the archive speech, and serves mainly as thematic backing despite instrumental and choral boosts to the guitar, drums and sequencer template. Tracks achieving lift-off include E.V.A, whose fusion funk bookends a vertiginous evocation of a space walk, and the rocketpropelled Go!, in which NASA chat is smartly synced into a motorik pulse. Otherwise, PSB make do with only staring at the stars. Nick Mee
SIR RICHARD BISHOP
THE DODOS
Drag City // February 16th
Morr Music // February 10th
“The guitar had a strange energy. I couldn’t put it down.” So recalls Bishop about the dusty acoustic sixstring he picked up last year in a Geneva shop. A few months later, the 19th century axe joined the Arizona journeyman on a summer trip to Africa. Holing up for a week in a rooftop apartment in Tangier, Bishop feverishly improvised by day; recorded by night. Part classical reverie, part ancient blues hoedown, Bishop delights in the guitar’s impressive tonality. He thrashes out a frantic flamenco dervish on Safe House while letting the meditative Bound in Morocco shimmer in its own warm, radiant majesty. This is urgent music from the Sun City Girl that requires a patient ear to unlock its narcotic allure. Geoff Cowart
Meric Long and Logan Kroeber are two inventive, inquisitive Californian musicians who, for the past ten years, have been called The Dodos. Being admirably restless in their quest to better their art has led to them expanding their sound beyond its initial template of drums, guitar and vocals, but there’s a feeling that, despite these developments, they’ve never bettered their excellent debut Visiter. For their sixth LP, Individ, they’ve returned to that minimal approach, and – whaddayaknow! – it’s the best record they’ve released since their first. Tempting though often it is to applaud experimentation for its own sake, the songwriting here – especially on the Shins-like Bubble or John Fahey joins Animal Collective romp of Precipitation – makes a far stronger case for having gone back to basics. H. HAWKLINE
IN THE PINK OF CONDITION Heavenly Recordings // February 2nd Huw Evans’s third album as H. Hawkline effervesces with potential but its accessibility depends upon whether or not you appreciate its two main references: Television and Pavement. Opener Sticky Slithers is an angular and cacophonous twinguitar assault that revels in chromatic riffs. It sets the tone for over half the album, though it’s in the record’s slower moments that he reveals a cunning sleight of hand. Cate Le Bon’s production and melodic sensibilities are all over Concrete Coloured Clothes and In Love V2 - both raised to glorious heights by their romantic Welsh melodies. It’s hard to love it all; nevertheless Huw Evans is a weird and beguiling minstrel. Tim Hakki
COLLEEN GREEN
I WANT TO GROW UP Hardly Art Records // February 23rd Having spent the past few years releasing home-recorded, fuzzed out indie pop Colleen Green is ready to step into her own with I Want to Grow Up. Green’s first studio recordings and her second album for Hardly Art, I Want to Grow Up finds the Los Angeles songwriter dealing with relationships and everyday life in her own unique way – direct, straight to the heart indie rock combined with pop smarts. While there is always a danger when moving from home-recording to a real studio, Green has managed to do so without fault; she has muscled up her sound and added a bit of studio sheen, while retaining the immediacy and charm of her previous work as well as delivering her finest set of songs so far. Johan Alm
TRUST FUND
NO ONE’S COMING FOR US Turnstile // February 9th December’s announcement that Trust Fund had signed to Turnstile for the release of this, their debut long-player, was both unanticipated and wonderfully heartening. That a label, which boasts Perfume Genius and Los Camp! among its ranks, was willing to throw its weight behind a trio making scrappy bedroom rock felt like something of a victory for the underdog, while also adding a weight of expectation to No One’s Coming For Us. Verifying that those expectations have been met is the easy part; from the outset the record is assuredly engaging, quietly unraveling like the late-night confessions that seemingly provide the records narrative. Quite where the absorbing captivation comes from is more difficult to discern. However, from boisterous lead single Cut Me Out, through the apathetic numbness of Stomach and its more refined moments, this is a record that constantly, and beautifully, cuts deep – led by a hazy sense of magic that’s simply unyielding. Noah Lennox is talking to me from a freezing Lisbon – a city which has been his home for the last decade – about the track Tropic of Cancer, the centrepiece of his spellbinding new Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper record. It sees Noah meld a harp sample from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker to a vocal line about disease. ‘You can’t come back, you won’t come back,’ he sings in plaintive falsetto. It’s the type of stunningly and oddly beautiful song that only he could make. It’s also a microcosm of what the whole album is about. “I was just playing with that little section from the Nutcracker and trying to make different loops – going over and over it again until the way it really starts to feel right comes into focus like a Polaroid.” It’s a strikingly elegant and deft way to describe the process he goes through to create his music. Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper sees him put his ideas through a dreamy, warped filter and submerge them under echo and reverb. The song also underscores the themes of change and death that lie at the heart of the album. “It’s about disease and, as horrible and as sad a force it can be in our lives, I was trying to have sympathy for it in the context of it being just another element in the universe. It also highlights the process I went through with every song – it starts from a very personal place and then gradually expands to be about disease with a capital D, rather than this thing that happened to me.” “For this album I was really motivated to write stuff that wasn’t just about talking about myself. It was my M.O. in the past to use introspection as a tool that could hopefully be useful to somebody but I wanted to expand my perspective, so I wasn’t
naval-gazing. I just wanted to look bigger and get over myself.” Looking bigger is most definitely what he’s done. The Grim Reaper... is Lennox’s most ambitious record to date. It’s an album of beauty and invention, taking dog barks, drum breaks, and samples to create something spellbinding and intimate – both accessible and layered. “There was a lot of stuff that I threw against the wall in my brain, some of it stuck, some of it didn’t. The usage of the drum breaks can be traced back to the very
“I’m like a golfer, competitive against MYSELF.” beginning. I also knew I wanted to do something that on the surface was very easy to digest while making secret all these sounds that take a little more time to wrap your LiS 25
head round – I think that sort of relationship was what I was thinking of from the beginning.” It’s not a mix that’s easy to pull off. “It’s really tricky to combine those ideas. We recorded for about a month and then Pete (Kember, his talented co-producer) went back to his studio and would send me mixes and we went back and forth with those and that took about seven months. Harmonising the two aspects of the songs was a really difficult process.” “Come to Your Senses was one of the first things that we started recording and one of the last things we finished. Every time we change something Pete will save it with a new number and we got up to a couple of hundred with that one. There’s a threshold and diminishing returns and we were inching close to that line but the fact I can hear stuff now and still get into it is proof that we didn’t burn the bridge. In fact Come to Your Senses and Mr Noah are probably my favourite songs on the album. They’re the most fully realised of what I imagined the songs were going to be when I started.” His vision has been achieved and then some – Grim Reaper... still marries his uncanny knack of using electronic elements to create something textured and with a human warmth. It’s an atmosphere and feeling he’s very mindful of creating. “Part of it is being conscious of that happening or not happening. Another thing is allowing imperfections in the production and the performance, which isn’t always easy. The impulse is, especially when you’re working on computer, to polish it as much you want. You can edit every little drum hit. And we did none of that. A lot of the vocal takes are
kind of crude I guess but the upside of that is you get something that feels more organic.” And what about that wonderful album title? There has been speculation that this was a concept album about death but the answer is something a little more prosaic – the focus here is about mortality and change. It’s also a nod to the titles of old dub albums. “I’ve had the title for a while. The direct inspiration is from dub records – a bunch of records that came out of Jamaica in the 70s. And in DJ culture you have something versus another thing. I found all of those kind of ideas amusing and attractive.” “Nothing on the album talks in a literal way about death. There’s a lot of stuff about going through changes and because of that change there’s this mental image of dying, but never literally so.” “It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about, even beyond the two years I’ve been making the record. I even noticed that a lot of my older songs address these sorts of subjects as well. I don’t know, maybe I’m sort of obsessed with it.” If it hasn’t come across already it should be noted that Noah is unassuming and a man for understatement and self-deprecation. Yet that’s coupled with a fierce determination to not rest on his laurels or repeat himself. “I don’t really go back and listen to stuff a whole lot but the times that I have heard stuff since mastering the record I’ve been pleasantly surprised.” I ask about the weight of expectations for the album but it’s clear that, despite the success of Animal
Collective and recording with Daft Punk, the biggest expectations still come from within himself. “There’s enough coming from me that I don’t know that I need any extra juice. I’ve always been that way – I’m like a golfer, competitive against myself.” This determination to keep evolving also means you won’t be hearing any Person Pitch material when he heads to the UK to play live. “The quality of a lot of the Person Pitch songs stands out not in a positive way when I hold them up against these new ones.
The way I recorded it was pretty bad. It’s got an idiosyncratic quality to it that I like but it doesn’t feel like it meshes when I try to do it it’s really noticeable that there’s new thing there and it doesn’t feel like it’s part of the wave of what’s happening now.” Not to worry: listening to Grim Reaper... it’s clear that what’s happening now is pretty special. Panda Bear meets The Grim Reaper is out now via Domino. Panda Bear plays Electric Brixton March 4th.
“There was a lot of stuff that I threw against the wall in my brain”

EVENTS
a selection of new stuff we’re excited about: CONVERGENCE MUSIC + ART + TECHNOLOGY
KIASMOS
After a successful launch in 2014, Convergence is back with renewed vigour this year, expanding beyond the four venues of last year and welcoming another stunning line-up. Launching the nine-day stint of events is a kaleidoscopic set from Warp’s Clark, with the days only bettering themselves as the likes of Kiasmos, Gary Numan, Portico and Snow Ghosts all appear throughout. As this is a festival of technology, music and art, this year sees the welcome introduction of a three-day series of discussions that focus on how these elements intersect, looking at innovative collaborations and investigating technological trends of the past and present. A celebration of the arts with a difference, Convergence is a most welcome addition to the London events calendar, get your tickets quick. 12th-21st March // various venues @ConvergenceLDN // convergencelondon.com
HAWKER HOUSE These street food (and booze) events have seen us sitting under Hungerford Bridge feasting on BBQ and hot-dogs, falling off bikes after Rumstock, eating all the very best ribs you can imagine in one day, huddling in yurts on winter rooftops sipping Vin Chaud, and even braving the glass city of Canary Wharf for river-side beers and chicken. At a lot of these things it rained. So, let’s get indoors. Returning for 2015, it’s Hawker House; three floors of incredible food, the best drinks and Streetfeast’s patented vibes. It’s in a new location this year, but the line-up’s even stronger, including the legendary Bleecker St Burger and relative-newcomers Boom Burger, pizza from Born & Raised, BBQ from Smokestack and Busan, the ever-dreamy steamed buns of Yum Bun and absolutely tons more. January 30th-April 4th (Fridays & Saturdays only). Hawker House, 260-264 Kingsland Rd, E8 4DG @StreetFeastLDN // streetfeastlondon.com LiS 30
MONTY’S DELI AT THE OLD BENGAL BAR Anyone that’s been to New York, sampled the likes of Katz’s Deli, and come back needing that salt beef and pastrami fix, has long known that the only place to go is Monty’s, set up in an archway on Druid Street near London Bridge. Now, for one month only, they’re coming to the Old Bengal Bar (Liverpool Street area) to cure weekend hangovers with some exclusive brunch dishes: Monty’s French Toast, an incredible-sounding salt beef hash, plus a dish called The Fresser which is yiddish for ‘glutton’ so, yeah, you can guess how great that’s gonna be... Feb 7th-March 8th // 16a New Street, EC2M 4TR @MontysDeli // montys-deli.com // @OldBengalBar
PASSPORT BACK TO THE BARS This February, War Child and O2 are teaming up to produce a series of intimate shows with a selection of incredible artists. Ride, Bastille, The Vaccines, Duran Duran and more will take to tiny stages across London, giving fans a chance to see a unique, one-off show from the acts and - to make it even better - the whole thing is for charity. To pile on the excitement (and to make it more fair) entry is gained by entering a ticket lottery, so pick your show wisely and get texting in. February 16th-24th // various venues // For lottery details on all shows check warchild.org.uk/passport Each entry costs £4.50 - Draw closes February 8th

CRAFT BEER RISING Celebrating the dizzying rise of craft beer in the UK, Craft Beer Rising returns for its third year, and the first in conjunction with London Beer Week, where 70+ breweries will be showing off over 450 beers. As well as London favourites, like Bear Hug and Beavertown, a host of UK, US and New Zealand brewers will be descending on Brick Lane and treating us all to the very best craft beer around. Burger Bear, Prairie Fire BBQ and more are supplying the food, whilst Jazzie B and Don Letts will be on hand to deal with any sudden urges to dance. Cheers! 19th-22nd February // The Old Truman Brewery, EC1V 9DP // @CraftBeerRiseUK // craftbeerrising.co.uk LiS 31

LIVE DOE
FAKE LAUGH // DOE Sebright Arms // January 14th First up this evening is Kamran Khan's latest outfit Fake Laugh, a fairly recent collective but from the outset the four-piece sound like they've been in this band all their lives. Brilliantly tight they make the lo-fi recordings heard on their 'Freely' EP sound polished and perfected yet never losing their distinctive charm. Kahn’s equally shimmering vocals are the focal point though, stealing the show with his almost-falsetto that distinguishes this act as something unique. One after another these delicate indie-pop tunes lift our feet, make us dance, and only too soon it's over. We needn't have worried though, because Doe storm the stage with the kind of forceful energy that'll make you forget anything else exists. Jake Popyura's drumming is instantly mesmerising, full of vigour and yet seemingly effortless in its precision. It’s the vocal harmonies and clashes between Popyura and lead singer Nicola Leel that add something special though, giving it just enough rough around the edges to make us want to learn all the words and scream them along. Maybe by the next time we just might have. Nate Rockwell
DIE ANTWOORD Brixton Academy // January 17th Walking into Brixton Academy to hardcore rave insanity classic, Now Is The Time, is as good a start to an evening as any. This was courtesy of Jackmaster, who got everyone excited with bangers that spanned the last 30 years. Suitably hyped, the crowd is desperate to get nasty when DJ Hi-Tek, shirtless and donning a Mexican wrestling mask (maybe?) gets behind the decks and kicks off with a loop of DJ Hi-Tek is gonna fok you in da ass, before Yolandi and Ninja swagger onto the stage sporting bright orange jumpsuits, What followed is pretty much what you’d expect from Die Antwoord. Dancers in witch hoods, Pink Floyd pants, Ninja’s beloved 'sausage flick', a giant inflatable evil boy (boner and all), Yolandi’s piercing squeal, trap beats, gabba beats, rap, rave and and a fuckload of ZEF. There’s not much else to say, but I don’t think anyone’s here for anything else. I'm certainly not anyway. Big night. Oli Knowles LiS 59

IF STREAMING IS A CUTE KITTEN, THEN BUYING PHYSICAL IS A HILARIOUS HAT THAT IT JUST LOVES WEARING: by Jack pOp of Alcopop! Records It may be old news now that streaming is killing off digital downloads and ushering in a new era of music consumption – but I was keen to make it clear that, for the humble indie record label at least, I think it’s a wonderful time to be alive! When we first kicked off this whole label thing back in 2006/7 we had an idealistic, if slightly naïve, outlook that we didn’t need digital sales anyway. Alcopop! has always been all about producing super-sexy physical releases, working niche ideas to create the odd eye-catching piece (see Fixie bike compilation or FrisbeEP) – so why should we ship the songs we represent on iTunes? That view lasted for about six months. But now, years on, I’m pretty sure that streaming and buying physical products are absolutely destined to go hand-in-hand – and with folk self-curating their own listening/ purchasing habits more and more, this can only benefit indies who genuinely are picking the cream of the crop… This whole system is going to support genuinely exceptional records. Look at it like this… In the olden days a fat, rich record executive could chuck a tonne of cash at generating hype, get a band all over the press – and sell a load of records off the back of that before people realised the act was actually pretty crap. Nowadays, people pick their magazines and blogs of choice; which introduces them to incredible artists - then they go and have a listen themselves before choosing what they want to buy. The death of physical, thus foretold for years, has always been bullshit. People love buying records (and some still dig CDs). Of course they do. It’s human nature to want awesome things, and I imagine I speak for at least a decent proportion of London in Stereo readers when I say we don’t all want to live in a solely metaphysical cloud full of digital media. Records are awesome. Records with CD/T Shirt/Slipmat bundles are even better. Whatever though – I’m pretty sure we’re in an idealistic place for music right now, and it’s suiting consumers more than ever. Sure, artists and labels are going to have to work harder than ever to write superb songs, find their listeners, and get them to buy the cool, creative stuff they make… But for those that do, the prevalence of streaming and physical going hand-in-hand means we’re in a good place right now!
