Newcomer Tirzah lit up our summer with her debut single I'm Not Dancing, produced by Micachu on her finest form. Inciting you to do exactly what its title tells you not to with its rough and ready recorders and loose percussion, and fronted by one of the most open and instantly likeable vocals of recent times, this is a dance track full of heart and soul.
The debut single from the collaborative project of Fatima Al Qadiri, Nguzunguzu and J-CUSH delivers filthy club music made up of all the recognisable hip hop, R&B and dub elements, but is stitched together in such a way that makes it so much more than its parts. With Al Qadiri's familiar ghostly synths and a biting vocal from Tink, this is a track that evokes the moment while reaching into a dark, abstracted future.

This aquatic tune from the London-based producers builds from a relatively simple grime backdrop to form a richly interwoven track that seems to shimmer as it moves. Dense yet frothy and fun, it's a fair shout for one of our favourite tracks of this summer.

LOBO (PRODUCED BY FOREST SWORDS) Annoyingly young Barbadian rapper Haleek Maul and returning Tri Angle producer Forest Swords are an unlikely but show-stopping pair on this heady and heavy new track. Matching the sinister palette of the latter's upcoming album, Lobo features a funereal beat and some arrestingly bleak lyrics from the 17 year old MC.

HOLD ON WE'RE GOING HOME Is it a rapper? Is it a singer? Who cares! It's Drake doing synth pop, and like ketchup mixed with mayonnaise, it's a combination you never knew you wanted but now won't be able to quit. An amazing tune for cruising around at twilight.

CAMP WORDS: JACK URWIN “Don’t eat me, I’m just a li’l burger!” Elizabeth Sankey squeals, her impression of an anthropomorphic sandwich as unexpected as the preceding revelation that Summer Camp’s third full-length will be “a concept album through the history of American fast food”. In context, this isn’t quite so batshit. “Every band I love has made a bad album,” Jeremy Warmsley clarifies. “I think maybe we should make one on purpose, just to get it out of the way.” The topic of burgers in our short chat is curiously, delightfully dominant. “A bunch of people who met through our shows have got this club where they go and check out different burger places - that’s so cool,” Warmsley says, his joy of witnessing friendships formed by mutual fandom for their music so palpable. A desire to please seems essential to Summer Camp’s existence, extending even to the lowest of the low: journalists. “I’m continually amazed and flattered when people take the time to write anything about us,” Elizabeth says. “I don’t want to encourage anyone to write a negative review for the sake of it, but I love
“ IT’S ETERNALLY DEPRESSING THAT I’M NEVER GOING TO GET TO SEE US PLAY LIVE” a really well written and thoughtful bad review, it’s so helpful - although horrible to get.” Given the calibre of the eponymous follow-up to 2011’s Welcome To Condale, it doesn’t seem too likely the duo will have to deal with such negativity this time around. Conceived during last year’s festival season, the 11 tracks that made it to release were whittled down from an initial 50; a combination of home recordings and studio time at the hands of desk-man extraordinaire Stephen Street. “He’s made records that I have literally listened to hundreds of times, so for us it was amazing. We felt really starstruck, the first time I was recording a bit of
guitar for the record I was so nervous, my hands were sweaty.” Between working with Street and tightening up the songwriting process, Warmsley explains how Summer Camp has comfortably dodged the dreaded ‘sophomore slump’. “More than ever we’ve revisited and edited and hopefully that’s part of why in my mind it’s a stronger album than Condale.” Sankey chips in: “It was something that I was loathe to do - I don’t do drafts, I don’t go back over things, so it was actually quite hard for me to think ‘okay I need to look at these lyrics again’.” Reluctantly, she admits it was worth it.
Meanwhile Jeremy, eschewing any false modesty, confesses it’s “eternally depressing that I’m never going to get to see us play live”. As Elizabeth gently mocks him for this display, the couple’s true dynamic appears. Every bit as charming and witty as their music, all you need to understand the beauty of Summer Camp is a few minutes in the company of Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley.

Come to London, drink beer, watch bands, hang with Henry the American Football player from Dawson’s Creek and cut down on that overrated sleeping stuff. The PINS guide to succeeding at A-Levels (and maybe life) sounds good to us: The 18th June 2007 was my first ever London show. It was a Monday night before one of my Music A-Level exams, so I should’ve been at home studying or getting an early night or whatever, but instead I was at the (then) Monto Water Rats near King’s Cross for the first ever Huckster Club night, curated by XFM’s Marsha Shandur and her friend Cerian. The bill was Tellison, Cats and Cats and Cats, Hearts Under Fire, My First Tooth and Pagoda. (A FIVE BAND BILL, on a Monday, in London!?) My bandmate Ross and I hopped on the train down from Northampton with cans of Guinness in hand. It was quite surreal, because Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire, Dawson’s Creek) was in Pagoda. Why was I in London on a Monday? Why was Michael Pitt there? He gave us his band’s album. It was weird and I’m pretty sure they all wore matching ‘Pagoda’ T-shirts. It was a super fun night anyway - the gig was really busy and sweaty, I felt very excited to be there (and a bit guilty), I danced to Tellison (for the first of many times in my life), drank some beers and got home at 3am having fallen asleep on the last train. My exam was at 9am and somehow, despite being more than a little groggy in the morning, I managed to totally nail it. The moral of this story is - if you party on schoolnights, you get A grades.

FACTORY FLOOR WORDS: TOM JOHNSON
After releasing their debut single way back in 2008, Factory Floor are finally ready to release a full-length record. They've spent those five years developing one of the best live shows around, tweaking the line-up and constantly experimenting with their sound; the result is a self-titled album which is as bold and beautifully realised as many always knew it would be. 'Turn It Up' is quite a measured introduction to the record. How has the reaction been? Gabe: It's been a really great response actually, considering it's so minimal. It's really nice to get such a good reaction out of the real bare bones of Factory Floor. It's a good pre-empt to the album; starting stripped back and building it up, like we do live. This is our first album so it’s a bit of a new experience. It feels like it's time to celebrate. Nik: We've worked on this for two years so it's become a really personal thing. I'm not sure if I want to read reviews because I'm so pleased with it in my own head. I love this record. Why did it take so long to put together? Nik: We decided to record it ourselves so we had to set up a studio and learn how to record 'us'. In the grand scheme of things, two years wasn't that long to come up with a record we're really happy with. Gabe: It was definitely a learning curve. We were trying to work out the best way to record Factory Floor.
We always felt like doing it in a live situation would be the best way, we wanted to capture playing off each other and progress forward as three people. It took a while to break things down to the simple three elements and to realise that sometimes less is more. Nik coming in changed the direction of the band somewhat. Was that the starting point for the album as a whole? Gabe: Yeah. It just gelled it together, completely. Nik: Me joining just allowed us to reinvent ourselves. It wasn't me joining that changed the sound of Factory Floor it was me joining and then all of us enjoying what we could do together. Dom: There was no resistance between any of us, which is a rare thing. It was a key point when Nik joined because we were all up for experimenting and it just moved forward from there. There's always pulling in different directions but I think that's what gives us a quite unusual shape. It's three artists doing their own thing and then exploring ways to tie it all together. Did the fact that you have such a strong live reputation almost get in the way of making a studio record? Gabe: A little bit. You lose the adrenaline, you lose the nerves, so you're losing that whole side of things. It's a completely different kind of atmosphere in the a studio situation, but they can still be just as dry or as magical as each other. Nik: We made a conscious decision for the record to do something different. Live, it's all down to a spontaneous reaction, which can get quite full and intense and that just wouldn't
translate on record. We wanted the tracks to be a bit more disciplined and we had that freedom of choice; to go back and change things and also experiment more. It's almost like cheating at an exam. In what situation does the record work best? Gabe: On headphones there's another kind of dimension to it, you can really get in to the intricacies of it, but it would be great to hear it on a huge PA system in a club too. You probably wouldn't want to sit down to dinner with it. Dom: I think the album will make more sense after we've played it live, both to us and the people who buy it. I think there's another stage with this album and that'll be when it goes back in to the live arena and we interpret what we recorded. That will be another shift of understanding. Do you want to take another two years before releasing another full-length? Nik: We're permanently exhausted! Gabe: We're totally fucked by this one, it's going to take a couple of years to get over it! Nik: I think we will get on with more stuff pretty soon, but we need a little break. In the new year we'll probably get back together and write some more again. Dom: When we play live we always seem to embellish on old ideas and that's when new ideas happen. It's an on-going experimenting process between ourselves, which always throws up some ideas. We take those and then we see if any imprint themselves on us enough to become something more. We'll wait and see...

FOREST SWORDS ENGRAVINGS Tri Angle // Out Now
A lot is said about space in recordings. Whether exploited or left as open chasm, it's in the silences, the open depths where certain records’ romance allows itself to be truly revealed. Matthew Barnes' Forest Swords alias has stood as a rightly adored
testament to that exercise since his lurching debut 'Dagger Paths'. But in 'Engravings', his once somewhat sinister grandiosity gives way to something more amorous and forgiving - and it's to its infinite benefit. Stand outs 'Thor's Stone' and 'The Weight of Gold' bring a broader accessibility to his pulsating, dub-owing pieces whilst the minimalism in the likes of 'Onward' and 'An Hour' still manage to expand on his most experimental of adventures to a thrilling new level. ‘Engravings’, in all of its bravery, proves to

be a truly wonderful example in a balance of subtlety – infrequently immediate, but a true stand out in the often-neglected premise of sonic depth. Come album closer 'Friend, You Will Never Learn' - with its longing, drawn-out melodies and broken classical samples Forest Swords' fragile heart exposes itself as one that beats truest within its reclusive space. Once inside, though, it’s a comfort that few will want to escape from. Will Grant
Fortuna Pop! // September 9th Working quietly under the radar for the past few years, eager ears have finally started pricking up for Joanna Gruesome in 2013 - and it's easy to see why. Signing to Slumberland and Fortuna POP! and recording with Hookworms' MJ, the Cardiff five-piece have stuck a comb through their hair and had a scrub behind their ears; the result being a more "accessible" sound and songs ascending through the fuzz. Flitting between punky scream and delicate lullaby combined with jangly guitar and some seriously good song-writing, 'Weird Sister' is everything you could want from a debut album and more. Columbia/Sony // September 17th Not quite the sales catastrophe their record label had feared, MGMT's self-styled 'anti-commercial' second album 'Congratulations' appears to have emboldened the duo's sense of purpose. Once again steering well clear of big singles, 'MGMT' offers brief flashes of 'Nuggets'-ish melody early on, but dissolves into lurching psychedelic soup by side two. The drab, sprawling electronica of 'Astro-Mancy' and wispy, whispered plod of 'I Love You To Death' may provide them stock for live wigouts, but here they're laborious at best. Ultimately the album's main problem is not that it sounds like a bad acid trip, just a really uninteresting one. Tom Edwards
DIM PEAKS TIME OF JOY
Gold Robot Records // September 3rd In these Rayna James inspired times - with flannel shirts and broad Texan accents firmly back on the agenda - a re-imagining of what we once, half-embarrassed, called Alt.Country seems way overdue. This, from the ever spot-on Gold Robot Records, seems a mighty fine starting point. It may lack the raw, wounded, gravitas of the genre’s mountain fuckers, but by recalling the lyrical dexterity of Malkmus and the beaten-up world weariness of Grandaddy, ‘Time Of Joy’ proves an affecting, stirring record, gently imbued with a cold-beer-on-wooden-porch beauty, and with just a touch more edge than ‘Boys and Buses’. Superball Music // September 16th ‘Wild Light’ begins with a female voice stating “No one knows what is happening” – and it’s a line that aptly sums up the complexity of an album that takes you with it on many unexpected twists and turns. Having created epic textural soundscapes on their first three albums, the Sheffield post-rockers eschewed this in favour of dance-ready rhythms on previous album ‘While We Were Exploding Anyway’. Now with ‘Wild Light’ they merge those two styles – so while the focus is on brooding post-rock sonic cathedrals like ‘Heat Death Infinity Splitter’ and ‘The Undertow’, other tracks like ‘Prisms’ are upbeat electro bangers. It’s an approach that doesn’t work every time but this is a vast album that’s easy to get lost in. Danny Wright 21
YOUNGHUSBAND DROMES
Sonic Cathedral // September 16th With tantalising vocals, distorted guitars and gentle synthesisers as the musical building blocks, Younghusband’s longplay effort is one of consistent quality, feeling like a natural extension to their ‘Crystal’ EP. The album is at its best when the vocals are thick and anthemic; when the record’s river-flow sees psychedelia threaten to turn from a trickling stream into a voluminous tributary. This never quite happens to a severe enough degree however, sometimes leaving the listener wanting for a wider palette of sounds and textures than those here, which occasionally feel bogged down in the 90s with the Stone Roses’ Lost Demos. NEKO CASE THE WORSE THINGS GET...
Anti // September 2nd It's an extraordinarily long title for a reasonably short album, but Case’s sixth solo album, the first since 2009’s Grammy nominated ‘Middle Cyclone’, is an Americana soaked joy. Country isn't a genre that holds the immense following here it does in the States, often confined to the dark dusty corners of record shops, but there’s no doubt ‘The Worse Things Get..’ could help open us up to its merits. With heartbreaking lyrics and intricate guitar work at its core, it’s an album 100% in control of itself, a journey of discovery that just won’t let you go. Jack McKenna
CRUSHED BEAKS TROPES
ASL // September 16th The scuzzy UK garage-rock revival has been simmering away for some time; generous helpings of eye-catching and head-banging outfits are all finding their feet and, although London pair Matthew Poile and Alex Morris have been honing Crushed Beaks' sound and gaining fans for a good couple of years, the 'Tropes' EP is their first proper release. Before you know it you are deeply committed in 'Feelers'' full-blooded, punching chorus, complete with gloriously indulgent drum fills. The title track offers similar reckless abandon, as punk-esque vocal excursions kick back into anthemic "woah-woah's", before 'Lies' offers some bleary respite to proceedings. 'Day Residue' stands out; a screaming riff winds its way above more crashing drums and another knockout chorus, majestically wrapping-up this all-too-short, but thoroughly enjoyable, offering. Oval Space // Netil House // London Fields Brewhouse // August 10th “This is another good song” yell Cloud Nothings, and it is, and the crowd continue to go ballistic, and the thought occurs (right there, right then) that Visions needs to be a permanent fixture on the festival calendar. Emerging from the genesis of last year’s super-rad Radfest, but spread over three venues, this proves to be a bigger, bolder and, yep, even better experience. We take respite on Oval Space’s ornate terrace, we savour the sunshine from the Netil House rooftop, soaking up London views. Flitting between stages, we take in as much as we can from a bill stacked equally with quality and variety: 48
The vaguely gothic, very great, folkiness of Gaps eases us into the day, the frankly astonishing Kirin J Callinan (“a symphonic car crash” we overhear someone describe it as) embraces inclusiveness and slight revulsion, Public Service Broadcasting say ‘Public Service Broadcasting’ a lot, the portentous, smothering electro of The Haxan Cloak fills us with simultaneous doom’n’party, whilst the all out racket’n’kicks of the aforementioned Cloud Nothings provoke crowd surfing levels not seen since the early 90s (mostly by the notorious Jackson Scott). There’s more, too much to mention, too much to praise. Just make sure you’re there next year to embrace it. Dave Rowlinson

As 80 or so people gather in the low-ceilinged downstairs of one of London's finest-up-and-coming venues, the anticipation (and heat) in the air is palpable. We're excited to hear the infectious rhythms of his upcoming debut album in the flesh, and we are definitely not the only ones. Most remarkable about Jamie Welsh's brand of electronic dance is its ability to capture the hearts and feet of those soaking it up, the sheer enjoyment and connection with his productions are plain to see. Tonight hits the spot, and we know, in such a tiny venue, at such an important time in his career, that we saw something special this evening. Jess Partridge
They open with a bang; ‘Overload’ and ‘Run for Cover’ get us emotional, taking us back to the year 2000. From the get-go it’s clear the girls have been working hard; harmonies tight, each voice standing out uniquely, but melting together like the creamiest of butters. The new material is a perfect blend of early Babes and seriously addictive hip-hop/gospel infused pop that simply oozes cool. What’s more, you can see the girls genuinely believe in it, loving the songs like the audience do. They end with a mash-up of new single ‘Flatline’ and ‘Push the Button’ which naturally we go crazy for. The original Sugababes are back, and with more than a vengeance. Lara Piras

GHOSTS by JAPAN... DAVID LAURIE ‘Ghosts’ is one of the weirdest, most singular singles to grace the Top 5. It has no drums and is very, very quiet for the most part. It’s exotic, beguiling, unusual, impassioned, beautiful and very, very memorable. Whatever box ticking is required for a hit single, ‘Ghosts’ has none of it, save a half-spoken chorus of sorts. Japan were a band that took years to find themselves and were pushing, if not forward, then at least outward, to see what they might become. ‘Ghosts’ is about that yearning to move on, hindered by the past and, to me, always felt of-a-pair, sonically and thematically, with This Mortal Coil’s take on ‘Song To The Siren’. I’d never ever heard music like ‘Ghosts’ before; never mind massive hit singles. Hearing it for the first time felt like the world was whisked silently away as you were parachuted through the night into someone else’s dream. Waking, trapped in a dark, secluded house, the eerie silence interrupted only by floorboards creaking, half heard static and whispers that draw you into room after room and finally reveal themselves as your own thoughts. The sickening gut punch of finally realising something you’ve half known for ever. The dream is real and the person turning the key in the lock is you; always has been and always will be. If you haven’t, you should.
