THE IRISH HEART OF LONDON – BE PROUD OF IT, BE PART OF IT A Chairde, I am delighted to welcome you to our 2020 Spring/Summer ‘What’s On’ where we have a packed programme of arts, culture, wellbeing and education for you to enjoy. We have hundreds of events planned for you here at the Irish Heart of London, as well as further afield and we are thrilled to be appointed as Programme Partner for the London St Patrick’s Day Festival in Trafalgar Square you can read more about this on page 8. Other highlights include the 3rd annual St Brigid’s festival which celebrates Irish women’s creativity over the first weekend of February in partnership with the Irish Embassy as well as an expanded St Patrick’s celebration in March and a continuing partnership with the IFI Film Club. Interest in the Irish language continues to grow. In the past 12 months 487 students/daltaí participated and we hope to break that record this year, so whether you want to learn a few words or master the language we have a course for you. Our Wellbeing Service offers a fantastic range of activities from creative writing, kayaking and mindfulness to the more traditional activities like singing, crafts and bingo. They all have one thing in common, you will experience a real warm welcome and sense of belonging whether you are Irish or any other nationality. Slán leat, Seán Kennedy

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The London Irish Centre is currently embarking on a redevelopment plan to turn the Centre into a world-class community and cultural centre in the heart of London. This building was purchased in 1955 when the LIC first opened its doors. The location was chosen due to its close proximity to Euston Station which had a direct line to Holyhead where many Irish emigrants got the boat to. While 50-52 Camden Sq has served the LIC well over the years, our building is no longer fit for purpose. The ambition is now to renovate the premises to allow the charity to provide more life-changing services and make it more accessible for our clients. Some of the challenges this current building faces include: - There is no full disabled access, and while improvements have been made, there is still work that needs to be done to make the building disability friendly. - Due to the multiple entrances, there has been increasing security issues. The new plans aim to have one single entrance to all of our services. - In its current form, the Centre has poor event infrastructure, with sound and IT equipment in need of considerable improvements. - As the building is made up of three houses which were built in 1850, the layout is poor. Further additions were made as funding and resources became available, however, the building was never planned out for future use and consequently a large amount of space is wasted. - The building is not in an energy efficient or sustainable state, and without serious improvements it will continue to require costly maintenance and be a burden on the environment. - With an increasing demand on our services, the Centre needs to find new ways to support our work in the community.
Coffey Architects were appointed to spearhead the project last year and it is thought that the planning permission application will go into Camden Council by February. The building work will likely take between 12 and 18 months and roughly cost £15million. The new and improved LIC will include: - Design enhanced community facilities to ensure our advice, welfare and day centre offices are all situated close to one another. - Create an enhanced Wellbeing Centre offering activities, education, social space and lunches. - Provide a Community café, bar and meeting space. - Provide flexible event and office space to support the LIC’s charitable objectives. - Create an improved destination for the Irish community in London, as well as an important cultural asset for Camden. - Enhance the Irish identity of the Centre through design and storytelling in its redevelopment. - Design a sustainable building that reduces the Centre’s impact on the environment. The LIC has long been the Irish Heart of London and we hope to keep that magic going forward as we make these necessary improvements to the building to secure the future of the Centre. We invite you to join us on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shape the future of the iconic London Irish Centre. Please contact us if you would like more information on our redevelopment plans and how you can get involved.
