London Lifestyle Awards

S

ince 2010 the London Lifestyle Aw a r d s h av e b e e n t h e u l t i m a t e celebration of the greatest city in the world. London is not merely the backdrop for my life but one of its key architects. When I first arrived, sixteen years, ago I knew I had found a home; a home in which to live out my dreams and to create the life I wanted to be remembered by. London is by no means an easy city but it is a rewarding one, especially for those who have the tenacity to consume and embrace it. There is one anecdote that has resonated with me over the years in regards to what people expect when coming to London. Some friends were debating, well more like having a heated conversation, as to how to spend a memorable evening in London. One made a bold statement saying, “I did not come to London to eat at Pizza Hut.” No offence to Pizza Hut, but I couldn’t help but agree with him. People come to London to indulge, to immerse themselves with exceptional experiences.

The fantastic thing about London is that you come here to live a life that is var ied and exciting; to do things here that you generally don’t have the opportunity to do in other cities. This is what keeps me here, what makes me feel alive and most impor tant, what makes London my home. I immerse myself in all that this great metropolis offers; the theatre, the restaurants, bars and fitness facilities, the people - basically everything that enhances my own London lifestyle! Finally: Thank you to all the businesses and the people that have been involved and a par t of the London Lifestyle Awards over these last five years and, of course, a big thank you to the great city of London - we couldn’t have been more inspired or done it without you. Enjoy our book - here’s to the next five years!

stories from the LLA vaults Jason Gale in conversation with Yasmin Sulh

I

mentioned in a magazine last year, these first five years of the London Lifestyle Awards have been the experience of my life... That initial dream of holding an event to celebrate this great city, has evolved into a year round business, across multi-media platforms, culminating in an annual gala. I have had many happy memories from the past few years and a few scary moments that sent my pulse racing through the roof! It all really began in 2009 when I went to meet President Bill Clinton, he was talking at one of the prestigious Park Lane hotels and I was fortunate enough to be invited to meet him prior to his talk about the Clinton foundation. I will admit I was very much in awe of the man. Very few people over the years have exuded so much presence. In the short meeting we had he must have used my name several times, which made me feel a million dollars, and completely ingratiated him with me, so prior to his talk I was ready to believe every word he said and this is really where the awards started. For a long time I believed London was the greatest city in the world and wanted to do something about it, but was not sure what. Clinton took to the stage and like any good performer congratulated the audience on their great city, but he went on to say that the problem with Londoners is that you don’t know how good this place really is and went on to eulogise for a good ten minutes on why he loved this city. With his words ringing in my ears I went home to consider what I loved so much about the city and mind mapped the London Lifestyle Awards, the celebration of the greatest city in the world.

MR. LONDON “London is not just the backdrop for my life- it has a firm hand in creating it.”

Many of you will know him as the enigmatic CEO and Founder of the London Lifestyle Awards & World Lifestyle Awards. Jason Gale is also a successful publicist and public relations consultant but we thought you might also like to know a little more about the man himself - from his footballing days in Yorkshire to the flashing lights of London’s Paparazzi.

lla interview

Jason where are you from originally? I was born just outside of Cambridge,in a town called Ely, where my father was stationed with the RAF at the time. When I was 2 years old we moved back to Yorkshire, to Willerby just outside of Hull. This place was my whole world growing up, I lived right around the corner from my primary school, and was always playing in the streets around the neighbourhood with my friends and siblings.

What brought you to London? At the tender age of 11, I was regularly playing football around Yorkshire and other parts of the country, it was then I realised that there was a big world that needed exploring. Aged 24 I won an exciting modelling contract and moved to Manchester. I was travelling to London a lot and knew that this was the place I needed to be if I was going to have the career I wanted. In 1998 I finally made the transition to London.

What did your journey entail? Whilst modelling I was also writing Television programmes as I loved the creative industries. Long story short, it was the dot com era, and although we raised enough money to get started we didn’t raise enough so we quickly ran out. Throughout these experiences I knew I had a knack for PR and as I had already built up such a great contact book full of journalists, brand owners and celebrities, I set myself up as a freelance consultant.

What goals did you set out for yourself and do you feel you achieved them? No I don’t think I have achieved all of my goals yet but I have definitely achieved some of them. I’m fortunate that I am able to live on my creativity, and profit from my ideas. I get to work with brands that I am passionate about with people who I like, and that in it self is an achievement. I am a great believer in that everything has its time.

What does the future have in store for you? After five successful years, the future is assured and we will continue to celebrate London with LLA, through our events, publications, websites and apps. But we’re also taking this unique format internationally to allow other passionate lifestyle consumers in other iconic cities to celebrate their urban centres. We are also on the verge of signing a television deal for the awards, as well as partnering with some international sponsor brands. I’ve also started writing again and over the next 18 months will be completing my book. To aid this process I’ve recently started my blog, jasongale.com, writing about the things that I’m passionate about - London, London lifestyle and of course, the London Lifestyle Awards! London is not just the backdrop for my life, it has a firm hand in creating it... and I want to continue to shine light on the exceptional lifestyle opportunities that this city provides.

What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Prepare yourself and get as much experience as you can. Study for the PR world; read (across all media) all the time. Understand what the consumers of your media want and become passionate about it.

Describe yourself in 3 words? Creative. Ambitious. Tall!

lla star interview

TV personality, singer, dancer, actor, fashion icon, and national treasure... The lovely Sinitta talks to us about her love of London and her role as ambassador for the London Lifestyle Awards... You have been involved with the London Lifestyle Awards since 2011. Why are they so important? I think it’s impor tant for businesses in par ticular because although the awards are a local event in London they actually send out a global message telling residents and visitors alike about the amazing things going on in this great city.

You have been a fantastic brand ambassador for the London Lifestyle Awards, what makes you so passionate about it? I once heard a sermon about London being the loneliest city in the world and it shocked me, as I never feel lonely here. I realised when you have a home and friends in the city you may regard it differently and also take knowing that city for granted. Being an ambassador helps me to shine the light and celebrate great places in London and direct people to them. Not just the hip and happening but also places where people can find companionship and friends such as Hillsong Church and thus remove that loneliness issue. The London Lifestyle Awards has an important role in showing everyone how amazing this city is and I am completely behind that.

How do you keep in shape and look so good in London? London has amazing fitness facilities, which I use regularly; Barrecore and Heartcore in particular but also Duo in Chelsea where I push a sledge. I also really enjoy practicing my skiing at the snow centre in Hemel Hempstead and ice-skating in Bayswater, so you see it’s far from normal! I also like to take vitamin infusions from Reviv in Knightsbridge quite regularly too, this helps to top up my nutrition and boost my immune system. I also try not to have the heating on in my bedroom as to avoid dehydration and wrinkly skin. When I was at boarding school we always had the windows open with lots of fresh air and I’m certain that it’s healthier for you.

What do you love most about London? There are so many things I love about London, without being corny obviously my family and friends are up there and also the love I feel for this city. I adore walking in the mornings and going to my various classes, hopping on and off buses along the Kings Road. I also tend to potter around Covent Garden and Notting Hill as it’s a buzzy place but also a cosy town.

with love, Sinitta!

lla star interview

What other cities or places in the world do you enjoy visiting? I really like New York now, but when I used to go there in the late 80’s before Mayor Guiliana cleaned it up, I didn’t like it much at all. I felt threatened and the city seemed dirty and dangerous, but at that time we bought a beautiful apartment in the residential side of the Mandarin on Columbus circle in 2002. I fell in love with the place; luckily being so high up I could see the sky. There is a lot of soul in New York but nowhere touches Blighty.

Where do you look for outfit inspiration? When it comes to memorable outfits I’m inspired by the greatest performers of all time; Josephine Baker, Marilyn Monroe, Diana Ross, Cher and of course British drag queen Danny La Rue.

How does fashion in London compare to other parts of the world that you have been to? I notice fashion much more while I’m in the UK than anywhere else to be honest. You just know when you are in London, because British girls know how to pull

You’ve had a very successful career, many of your earlier days were spent on the West End stage, what West End shows do you love? So many! Cats is back again with Nicole Scherzinger and I recently went and saw it, her vocals were incredible and it brought back fond memories because it was my first West End show.

Are there any roles that are currently in the West End that you would love to play?

edge, sex and innocence all into one outfit, and swiftly transition it from day to night.

London is known for being the Showbiz capital of Europe. What advice would you give someone wanting to pursue a Showbiz career in London? The best advice I could offer is to be original, don’t copy or even tr y to emulate anyone else that is currently out there. Visualise yourself living your dream, believe in yourself, and then practice like mad so you feel confident; and then give it all you’ve got!

I would love to play Miss Hannigan in Annie, as I’ve always played the sweet heart roles it would be nice to play a villain. I mean it must be so much fun rehearsing, it’s always a lot of fun when you bond with the cast, which can make being involved in a production

B

orn in Lambeth, raised in Elstree,

Hertfordshire, Simon Cowell left school at 16 with two ‘O’ levels. After stints window cleaning and mowing lawns, his Dad (who worked in the music industry) got him a job in the EMI mailroom. Ambition and sheer determination propelled Simon’s career forward. He became a talent scout and set up E&S Music before leaving to join Fanfare Records. The rest, as they say, is history...

What are your earliest memories of London? I’ll never forget walking through the gates to the funfair at Batter sea Par k for the fir st time. I must have been about four or five, and it was my absolute favourite thing in the world. In fact if an alien dropped down into London I’d take them to the site of the funfair and then ask them to invent a time machine so I could go back to that time and revisit. Total nostalgia! Over the years Simon’s become a regular at some of the key city hotspots, and has been influential in discovering some restaurants that are now London institutions.

Knowing that you’re a bit of a foodie, what would you say is your favourite restaurant? I don’t think I could tell you what my favourite restaurant is, I just like London restaurants. I love Lulu’s, and I’ve always liked Mr. Chow, I’ve been going there for over 30 years. There’s the restaurant at The Art’s Club. Then of course there’s Scalinis and their pasta and bean soup, which I’m literally addicted to!

What do you miss most about London when you are away? The things I miss most about London are the restaurants and of course the seasons. Driving through Hyde Park, just as spring is starting, when all the leaves and blossoms are coming out. It’s one of the nicest things in the world, so I always make a point of driving through the park when I’m in town.

If you were the Mayor of London for a day, what would you do? I would introduce first class driving lanes. You’d pay to use them, but there would be no speed limit. The drivers have a great time and the city gets more money... everybody wins. I’ll tell you another thing I’ve thought about on the subject of driving. I think we should have a London Grand Prix, like in Monaco. They trialed it a while ago, but it didn’t take off. Health and safety maybe. Can you imagine it? Driving past Buckingham Palace, The Mall, Trafalgar Square – incredible. Boris and Bernie need to talk.

So how did this boy from Elstree find worldwide fame and fortune? ‘Work hard and be patient’ is the best advice my dad gave me.

What was life like in the 80’s? I was a typical 80’s cliché. I had the cars, house and image, but everything was beyond my means. I spent too much time at par ties and then it all imploded. Losing everything is probably the greatest lesson you learn.

How did you achieve success? Everything I have done in my life, I’ve done by learning from other people. I always think if you are lucky enough to work with someone smar they teach you and you start to learn how to do your job. That’s exactly what happened with me; it probably took me 15-20 years before I actually knew what I was talking about, but I loved those 20 years of hustle!

What advice would you give to the younger generation? At the moment there is this ‘get rich quick’ mentality. Whether it’s my shows or the lottery, everyone wants to be rich within the year. But I would say to anybody: enjoy the trip – it’s the most fun!

Sponsors’ Spotlight

The curtain went up on The London Cabaret Club in an explosion of sequins, music and gastronomy, with pop-up extravaganzas at One Mayfair and The Collection saturating the press and thrilling its rocketing fanbase, who eagerly await its exciting expansion. Entrepreneur and Creative Producer Evelina Girling and top Choreographer and Artistic Director Doni Fierro created this revolutionary cabaret concept to celebrate all that is Great about Britain. And its prodigious combination of world-class, speciality acts, exquisite dancers, fine dining and cocktails has earned it worldwide critical acclaim, sold-out shows and an army of A-list fans. It even dazzled the king of enter tainment himself, Simon Cowell, who made a rare public appearance at the star-studded gala night (May 2014), treating Lauren Silverman to her first outing since their son’s birth, along with an impressive X Factor entourage including fellow judge, Louis Walsh, The Xtra Factor presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford and Sinitta. The spectacular was the hottest ticket in town, attracting the cream of Britain’s glitterati and demonstrating the excellence of its dance performances by wowing Strictly Come Dancing judges Darcey Bussell and Craig Revel-Horwood. Celebrity guests were so impressed, that many returned to the show as surprise performers, like Pixie Lott, Brian McFadden, Alexandra Burke, Dionne Bromfield, Eliza Doolittle and Vogue Williams. It also earned the showbiz seal of approval from a galaxy of stars, including Millie Mackintosh, Chloe Green, Donna Air, Talia Storm, Ritchie Neville, Natasha Hamilton, Henry Conway, Pips Taylor and Toiula Adeyemi.

The production evoked the glamour of the Moulin Rouge, while injecting a chic British opulence and provided a heart-stopping, cabaret journey through British culture, including dancing soldiers, acrobats, strong men,the peerless contemporary dance for which they have become renowned and even dancing DOGS. The London Cabaret Club’s exquisite attention to detail placed it in another league of immersive entertainment, with each element artfully executed to maximise quality and multi-sensory pleasure: The masterful gastronomy was provided by acclaimed Pont St chef, Sophie Michell and guests enjoyed a seamless fusion between the dining and performance, through ingenious twists like the James Bond act, somersaulting across the stage to deliver Smoking Martinis. Dazzling costumes were designed by iconic fashion duo, Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro and the country’s finest musicians were cherry-picked to provide the show’s live music. It snowballed into an entertainment phenomenon after just two pop-up spectaculars, so Evelina, Doni and the team are responding to the demand by perfecting finishing touches to their grand return in 2015, as well as a host of exciting charity projects and a possible, West End run. Not content with painting the town pink with their pop-ups, The London Cabaret Club is set to thrill fans on a daily basis, with the launch of its own, permanent venue within the next twelve months. The cabaret sensation’s extraordinary 2014 was beautifully rounded off, when they beat London’s top nightlife stalwarts, including Pacha, Barts, Cafe de Paris, KOKO and Ministry of Sound to clinch a prestigious gong, as one of The London Lifestyle Awards’ Clubs of the Year. The luxury entertainment juggernaut is tirelessly pushing boundaries and soaring to new heights, so dust off those sequins and take a deep breath, because it will take centre stage in 2015.

It’s why we celebrate Soho and are happy to call it the home of the LLA HQ. Maybe we are just trying to keep the rebellion of our younger selves in full swing; and if that’s so wrong then we cer tainly don’t want to be right. Since there are so many fantastic elements that make up this wonderfully ubiquitous location we want to share with you the reasons in which we find it so special (and why we think everyone should relocate their offices.) Not only is the district itself so well known but also a lot of the individual streets have their own story and thus a tapestr y, which together make up all of this bustling culture. In prime location just South of London’s Oxford Street there are many hidden gems (and personal favourites) such as Café Boheme which is part of the Soho House group and located on the corner of Greek Street and Old Compton Street; a Parisian feel

33

Other local establishments such as the infamous Coach and Horses pub are amongst our neighbours on Greek Street, well known for having a landlord with the self proclaimed title of ‘London’s rudest landlord’ it adds to the fun history and diversity of the watering holes that reside amongst us. Comforting us on the other end of the road we have Jazz After Dark, which has played host to performances from some of the major players in the music industry such as the late, great Amy Winehouse. If you couldn’t already tell Soho is the melting pot of our capital; it is home to a multitude of businesses, theatres, clubs, bars and restaurants. A home away from home for many sub cultures; the history here is almost never ending, take Randall and Aubin for instance. Well respected and one of the first French butcher shops in London might we add, which expanded into offering tasty baked goods and cheeses. Since 1996 it has been one of Brewer Street’s most loved seafood restaurants, offering fine foods and wines, but with a strict no booking policy. Making the high-end luxury of delicious dishes approachable and accessible to everyone. What makes London one of the greatest cities in the world is the fact that it has so much to offer, there’s always somewhere to go, and something to do. One of our favourite spots in Soho and we think it might become one of yours too, is Quo Vadis Members Club; not just you’re average club, located on Dean Street, the club has a warm welcoming setting, and allows you to host everything from dinner parties to board room meetings. The service is impeccable and makes you feel as though you have been a regular your entire life. That’s something worth celebrating, since the customer service industry is so vital to our economy. We absolutely adore all that Soho has to offer ; its rich history, culture and musical theatre are just scraping the surface. But to walk these streets on a daily basis and immerse your self in the all the atmosphere is something that is so inspiring and magical. Everyone is working hard and playing harder, and that’s what life in London is all about.

COFFEE HOUSE

Wild & Wood is an independent coffee shop that is well worth tracking down... These eccentrics have a appreciative following hailing it ‘unique’ ‘cosy’ ‘quirky’, and such is their passion for wood paneling, church pews, 50s music and perfect coffee that their following is ever growing. Expertly brewed Monmouth beans, food from Clarke’s of Kensington and Cocomaya plus wonderful juices from Devon orchards, make for a great experience.

Here’s what some Wild and Wood Coffee House customers had to say to us: “Wild & Wood has got to be one of the best kept secrets in the West End. The coffee shop is quaintly furnished with furniture recycled from old church pews.” “Wild and Wood is a haven of tranquility in an otherwise pretty desolate part of London. Its like a tiny corner of Rustic France has been transported to New Oxford street.” “ The coffee is fantastic on many levels - firstly it’s Monmouth so you know its going to be strong and flavoursome and have you wanting to jump up and change the world if only you knew how. Secondly it’s made with love and an attention to detail that never ceases to amaze me. Thirdly it’s the right temperature. This may sound crazy but when I order a coffee I want

to drink it rather than stare at it wondering how long I have to wait to avoid losing all taste in my mouth for the next week. At Wild and Wood it’s perfect drinking temperature. “ “ The staff here are very friendly but softly spoken and make me feel as though I’m wrapped in a warm blanket.” “This tranquil utopia takes you instantly out of the hustle and bustle of busy Holborn into a surreal space from times gone by. The atmosphere oozes effortless charm where you could easily lose hours drifting off forgetting all your troubles, immersing yourself in coffee and delectable hand made cakes and pastries. “

Regulars of the Kerb street food collective, The Bell & Brisket can be found “slinging” their pimped up salt beef bagels at markets across London, including The Gherkin, Southbank, Kings Cross, private events, parties and pop ups. 2014 was an incredible year for accolades and winning the London Lifestyle Award for Best Street Food was the icing on the cake. Plans for 2015 include steps to open their first takeaway restaurant, a new pub residency and of course festival season!”

Californian-born Gina Conway heads up four successful Aveda salons in London, attracting a clientele that includes the likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Paloma Faith and Lulu Guinness. I opened my first salon in 2001 and now head a team of 100. I’m really excited to be launching our new addition, Privé by Gina Conway, which delivers excellence in hair and beauty in the comfort and privacy of your own home, office or hotel room, including massage, facials, yoga, pilates, and acupuncture. I know from personal experience that people can’t always find the time to get to the salon, so Privé brings the salon and spa to you. Creatively, I always knew I wanted to do hairdressing. I worked in a top London salon, but knew I could do better and that inspired me to go it alone. My mother taught me to leave the world a better place from the environment I live in through recycling, making a difference to everyone I meet and employ and giving back through charity initiatives. All of these personal philosophies guide my business decisions. I’ve worked at London, New York and Paris Fashion Weeks and on shoots for Vogue Italia and Vogue Japan. I’m proud to have won over 20 awards including UK Entrepreneur of the Year, Best New Salon, an AVEDA Fashionista Award and London Lifestyle Awards Best Health & Beauty Facility 2014. Above all this, seeing my team blossom into professionals, taking pride in their craft and unleashing their own potential is my greatest achievement. My mission is to bring joy to my clients through impeccable customer service, a professional and educated team and a big warm welcome. We only use natural, ethical environmentally conscious products.

FASHION LONDON

97

Always in Fashion by Pooja Shah / Yasmin Sulh

London

is one of the leading fashion capitals in the world.

The correlation between its popularity and its value is estimated to be an astounding £26 billion. Some of the most creative and influential designers have achieved their success in London. Including such iconic names as: Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Jimmy Choo, and Manolo Blahnik... to name but a few. Every year this great city has the pleasure of hosting two of the most exciting events in the world. Fashionistas from all continents clear their diaries to attend what has become one of the most prestigious events in fashion, leaving the past behind and looking forward to fresh ideas and concepts for the future. Those who are lucky enough to nab themselves an invite to one of the amazing shows are taken on quite the visual journey. This is known as London Fashion Week. Each year, more and more designers have showcased their inter-seasonal collections between the Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons at London Fashion Week and many have kick-started their career at Somerset House, where the event is currently held. It’s safe to say that London’s fashion scene is fast paced and ever changing. We live in a city that has a major influence on international fashion trends thus generating a significant economic output. Despite this, it’s also a city that is full to the brim with inspiration and street style. You don’t have to look far to be inspired by the people that walk the streets of this city. Whether they are dressed head to toe in sartorial elegance or grunge chic, we are lucky enough to be able to say that we put our Fendi foot forward in all areas. With the rising popularity of technology, British fashion has become even more accessible through apps, social media and blogs. Fashion is an art, and a significant one at that as it’s not only used as a form of expression but each of us lives our lives through it, actively or passively.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘I am delighted to support British fashion, which continues to be at the forefront of innovation. From how our designers are working and presenting their collections, to the fast paced dynamism of the retail sector, fashion is utilising the latest technologies to ensure this important industry continues to generate billions for our economy. London is developing a reputation as one of the tech capitals of the world, but it is already a global leader for fashion.’ London has a mix of business, financial, entertainment, cultural and leisure activities and is globally renowned for having a strong identity. We house some of the world’s best fashion schools, which include Central St Martins, London College of Fashion and the Royal College of Art. Not only do we hoard these incredibly creative universities which have thousands of international applicants year on year, but Condé Nast also publish one of the most popular editions of the “Fashion Bible” known as British Vogue. Being for tunate enough to say that we are the bir thplace of many successful magazines, schools and designers is a real pleasure, but we must also shine a light on the fact that we have one of the widest ranges of high street retailers across the globe too! Take Oxford Street for example, this is the busiest shopping street in Europe and is home to a number of major department stores including Selfridges, numerous flagship stores including Topshop, as well as hundreds of smaller independent brands. High-street trends often emerge in London and catwalk trends are quickly conver ted into affordable, fast-fashions. London fashion is highly coveted by fashionistas all over the world so fashion your seatbelts; we have an amazing journey ahead!

I

n a city as beautifully dressed as London, the Metropolitan Line can smoothly transform into the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every morning I catch my train in Harrow, sit down with a coffee and appreciate the cultural catwalk that I enjoy, front row! Whether it’s a single-breasted Valentino suit on Mr. Liverpool Street or a vintage leather satchel worn by a Camden curator, both tell stories that I just love to read whilst traveling in the little-big city! One invaluable aspect of London’s internationally renowned fashion industry is our highly credible fashion schools. As a student at the London College of Fashion, I am regularly exposed to industry experts such as Sir Phillip Green as well as being taught by lecturers who have excelled in various creative positions, thus the level of education is really some of the highest. Judging by the numbers of alumni who have gone on to employment at leading fashion houses, degrees from institutions such as Central St Martins, London College of Fashion and the Royal College of Art are on top of the global leagues. Caroline Rush, CEO of the British Fashion Council (BFC) explains, “In Britain we are lucky to be the home of the world’s best art and fashion colleges which have been known for developing design talent for this exciting global industry”. Whilst writing this piece, I’ve reflected on British designer brands and we’ve come a very long way over the last decade. Ten years ago, the main big guns were a handful of highstreet retailers and today we boast leading labels including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. Even when companies have been founded overseas, their designers always insist on basing their studios in London. Why? We have a special, creative air in the city. London has the ability to remain stylish on every street through our diverse population and their unique styles and silhouettes.

101

Cara Delevingne for Tom Ford

London I was born and bred in London and from a very young age, I’ve taken a keen interest in clothing. My general rule is high-street clothes, designer accessories. Topshop, leading British brand under the Arcadia Group, never fails to please me. Whether I’m after a pretty blouse for a client meeting or a two-piece co-ordination to paint the town red in, they really do cater to my ever y need - especially the flagship on Oxford Street! When it comes to accessories, I’m all about McCartney’s Falabella clutch with Ford’s Daria sunnies and a spritz of No. 5… but that’s always necessary! We all cross paths with thousands of people and exchange little to no words with them everyday during our travels. I believe clothes are an extension of our moods, habits and inspirations and growing up in a fashion-forward city excites me everyday. I feel inspired when I’m walking through Soho and I see hipsters in their oversized denim jackets, gripping their moleskins because they have that retro/vintage style which is right up my street. I’m equally inspired by the amazing architecture and history of London. Fashion and architecture both reflect culture; they elevate aesthetics and appearance; and they both have a functional constraint. Whenever I’m around Westminster, I feel like letting out my inner-Kate and channeling a little Alexander McQueen and during nights out in West-London, nothing makes me happier than throwing on my Chanel flap-bag, a little black dress with MAC’s sin lip: a look which I like to call ‘Parisian Chic’. We, as Londoners, are very fortunate to spend our lives in such a diverse, fashion-forward capital and I can’t wait to see what London has in store for the future.

The awards have celebrated everything from street food to fine dining to gastro pubs and high street chains. I have found the Londoners love of food knows no bounds and certainly no snobbery is attached to the hundreds of nominations received every year at the LLA HQ. Past winners include Crazy Bear, Le Caprice, Mash and Coya with phenomenal competition from Nuno Mendes and Andrés Balazs’ Chiltern Firehouse,The Berkeleys Marcus Wareing, Jason Athertons Pollen St Social and one of my personal favourites that got pipped to an award last year is Scott Hallsworth’s Kurobuta. Kurobuta really shows why I love London. It started as a pop-up on the King’s Road and after years of toil at Nobu, consulting work and juggling hands on family life Scott now has a permanent venue housing Kurobuta number two at 312 Kings road. Meanwhile the old pop up will now host Joe’s Oriental Diner, the more rock and roll sister restaurant. This is truly a long journey of blood, sweat and tears with a pay off that sees Scott at the beginning of what I hope will become his career dream come true. The roads may not be paved with gold but determination, bloody minded hard work and excellence means that opportunity in our thriving city is still as vital as it has been for hundred of years.

How can anyone not love the feisty, ball grinding, dirty and decadent lady that is London?

Carlo Distefano’s passion for quality has been key to his success as one of the UK’s leading restaurateurs. Chairman of the award-winning Italian family business San Carlo Group, founded in 1992, Carlo now oversees a multimillion pound empire which operates 16 restaurants across the UK and has an international portfolio in the Middle East. In 2007 the Group acquired London’s legendary Signor Sassi, which originally opened in 1984. Located in Knightsbridge Green opposite Harrods, the restaurant is popular with celebrities and royalty from all over the world and is renowned for its exquisite yet simple Italian food and outstanding seafood. Signor Sassi’s spaghetti lobster signature dish is talked about - and photographed - worldwide! This acquisition set the scene for the company’s ambitious expansion plans and, in 2012, Carlo and his sons Marcello and Alessandro launched another London venue, Cicchetti. Located at 215 Piccadilly Circus, the chic Italian restaurant and bar serves small-plate dishes of freshly prepared, regionally sourced seasonal Venetian tapas. It is the perfect venue for informal dining, long business lunches or oysters and a glass of champagne. Cicchetti Piccadilly is constantly bustling with satisfied diners.

117

2 014 L L A F i n a l i s t

The London branch follows in the footsteps of the hugely successful Cicchetti, Manchester and Fumo restaurant and cocktail bar in Birmingham. In 2014, the Group opened a third Cicchetti, the second in the Capital, in Wellington Street, Covent Garden and a second Fumo at One St Peter’s Square, Manchester. All restaurants in the San Carlo Group offer a true Italian experience and epitomise all that is best in genuine Italian hospitality. Everything from the design and staff to the wine list - which is expertly matched to the food. Carlo Distefano never compromises on quality - he insists on using only the freshest ingredients imported from the best producers in Italy. Olive oils, herbs and tomatoes are sourced from the markets of Milan, Bottarga from Sardinia, Burrata from Naples, Culatello from Parma and, of course, Autumn white truffle from Alba. San Carlo Group restaurants include San Carlo in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol and Leicester; Cicchetti in Manchester, Piccadilly and Covent Garden, London; Fumo in Birmingham and Manchester; Bottega and Farmacia Del Dolce in Selfridges, Manchester; Fiorentina, Hale; Flying Pizza, Roundhay and Signor Sassi in Knightsbridge Green. The company also has interests in the Middle East with Signor Sassi in Kuwait and Bangkok. Dubai is scheduled is opening early 2015.
