F IN D IN G YO U R F E E T AT U N I
You start your degree with hopes, dreams and expectations of how the next three years will turn out. Then something happens and it all goes pearshaped. Try not to worry too much: it’s rarely as bad as you think it is. In fact, usually it’s a lot better than you might realise. “Your family and friends provide different insights and perspectives that you probably wouldn’t get if you didn’t ask them. Remember that asking for help is okay, it helps you in the long run,” writes Mia Perlman in College Magazine. “When it comes down to it, more insight only helps you get closer to finding a solution to your problem. So, why not look to others for help?” Get out of your comfort zone It’s easy to see the same people day after day – or to see no one. But trying something new – joining a new society, going to a club or accepting an invitation to a night out – can really change your life.
Problems can come in all shapes and sizes. One week you might be bickering with your housemates; the next week you might be feeling lonely, or fretting over getting your coursework done. It seems like once a problem is solved, a new one takes its place. Whatever the problem, finding solutions that work can help you get back on track. Our top tips can help…
6
Finding new hobbies can help ensure that your coursework doesn’t overtake your life - and even help you keep track of deadlines by providing an outlet for stress. “Be brave. Every day speak to one person you don’t know and smile, even if it’s the person next to you in a lunch queue,” says Journalism Lecturer and Associate Professor Victoria Neumark Jones. “You’d be surprised how often they smile back.” Begin as you mean to go on University life signals a lot of fun for everyone. This is supposed to be the time of your life, but think about how you can evenly split your time from partying to studying to working part-time.
We all need some “me” time, and how you choose to spend it is up to you, But remember that you’ll have deadlines, lectures and essays all year-round. Now is the time to take control and start a routine - one which you can follow throughout your academic journey. Devise a new option It can be difficult thinking up solutions to problems, especially when you’re so involved that you can’t see straight. “Sometimes students get stuck trying to decide between two choices. Keep in mind that there may be a third choice you haven’t considered, or you may just need a little more time or information to make a decision,” writes psychologist Laurel Lippert Fox PhD. “Not every choice is yours to make but some of them are; so control what you can control, choose what you can choose, and know that sometimes you may even have the freedom to change your mind.” Think before you act Look before you leap, and make sure you think of the consequences of your actions before you dive straight in. “Thoughts, feelings, and actions are three different things. Often you have little control over how you feel or what thoughts pop into your head, but you have a great deal of control over how you act.
Get out and about Having a nice place to live, where you feel settled and cosy, has a massive impact on your work ethic and your way of thinking. But make sure your home-away-from-home is not so nice that you never want to leave. “Shutting yourself away in your bedroom and wasting your days in bed watching Netflix is easy when you have no one checking up on you regularly,” writes Angel Kissi in The Uni Bubble. “Although the independence that university gives you can be empowering and exciting, it also allows you to retreat from situations that make you feel uncomfortable, awkward and unsure of yourself. “Feeling as though you have no friends can lead to a lot of alone time, and this can lead to even more problems.” Get some help Sometimes a problem shared is a problem solved. “Speaking to tutors and members of the university wellbeing team can lift a weight from your shoulders. “Just the act of talking to someone can help you to feel better when you’ve spent so long feeling lonely,” adds Kissi.
“Some thoughts or feelings that make you uncomfortable might be normal and will eventually pass,” says Dr Fox.
“I encourage everyone who feels lonely to talk to someone they trust, whether it’s a friend or family member or someone at the university. When I finally spoke up about how I’d felt I was shocked to discover that I was not the only one.”
“However, acting or behaving impulsively or dramatically can result in permanent consequences for yourself or other people that you may regret. So if you’re having a strong emotion, slow down and think before you act.”

FIVE TIPS TO ESSAY SUCCESS We all know essays can be a stressful and none of us really like them, but for the next three or four years, your time at university will be filled with them. However, if you follow these tips the whole process should be bearable, and you should come out with success and a solid grade.
PLAN ORGANISE RESEARCH UNDERSTAND RESOURCES PLAN ORGANISE RESEARCH UNDERSTAND RESOURCES 8
1 2 3 4 5
PLAN
Planning is key to a successful essay. Write out a structure of what you want to say before you start writing the body of the essay itself. Learn about Harvard referencing and how to avoid plagiarism. When in doubt, ask your lecturer.
ORGANISE
Make sure you plan out the timings for your essay. You will know your deadline well in advance so work backwards from that date. Plan when you want your first draft completed and set yourself deadlines for each element of your essay.
RESEARCH
Knowing your topic is key to a successful essay. Research the question and know what you’re talking about, then you’ll be able to reel off the essay in no time. Use a variety of academic sources, including ebooks and library items. Avoid Wikipedia!
UNDERSTAND Ensure you completely understand what the question is, so you are able to answer it to your utmost ability. Refer back to the previous point and research all avenues of your question fully to get the maximum potential from your answer.
RESOURCES
Use all the resources you possibly can. London Met not only has qualified helpers at the Learning Centre, but also a plethora of Academic Mentors on hand to help you do the very best you can. Ask for help - that’s what they++’re here for.

A - Z OF STUDENT SURVIVAL
EW M IN U S A F LETTERS
Think you have it all sussed? You probably do, but even the most savvy fresher might need a steer in the right direction. Special contributor Molly Arnold, a London Met alum, gives us the law of the land...
A B C D E G
Accommodation, you probably have that all sorted now. Whether you’re staying in a private home, student accommodation or living with mum and dad, where you live is very important! If you’re in student accommodation, make sure you are 100% on what your contract says you can and cannot do. If you don’t feel safe or you have a problem, talk to the reception team at your accommodation, your landlord, or a London Met accommodation advisor. Booze is definitely popular during Freshers’ Week and with affordable drinks, The Rocket is a great place to hang out with your friends after a busy day studying and great for parties during your first week at uni and beyond. Just remember that nobody likes not remembering what they did the previous day and those drunk texts to your best friends or your ex aren’t that funny when you’re sober. Look after yourself and your friends while drinking. If you don’t drink, don’t feel pressured into ‘just one shot!’ Water and soft drinks can lead to a good night as well! Cash! We’re sure you know how expensive the city is. If you are struggling with money management, saving or there are problems with your Student Finance, be sure to speak to your friends at the Hub who can direct you to the right advisor. Doctors are all over the place and there is sure to be one close to where you live. If you have moved away from home, you’re probably going to have to find a new GP. Most student accommodations have a special open day where the local GP surgery staff show up with plenty of information, health advice, and signing up forms. If not, check out the local area or look online to find a local doctor. Be ready for the not-so-delightful ‘Freshers’ Flu!’ Holloway has plenty of doctors surgeries, just walk the street and pick whichever you feel suits you best! Exams and coursework are going to be a constant part of your life for the next few years, but don’t let that put you off. The library is there to help and your lecturers are there to support you. If you feel you need that extra help or there is a problem, don’t sit in silence until deadline day - talk to your lecturers. Top Tip: Essays written overnight aren’t that great! Start long before the night it’s due. Gym memberships can be expensive! You don’t want to have to empty your wallet just to enjoy a local gym. So don’t. Your university has a fantastic gym with great equipment and friendly staff. Best of all, it’s free! Head for a work-out after or before your lecture, it’s around the corner from The Learning Centre, just before Arsenal stadium.

Homesickness is sure to hit you at some point. From a young age, all you want is to move away and be independent, but the moment you move away and become independent, all you want is to be back home! If you find you are struggling being away from home, talk to a friend or a teacher. There’s always someone in university to listen to you. Top Tip: Skype is free and fantastic!
Internships. You’re going to be hearing this word A LOT! You might also hear it phrased as ‘work experience.’ Your lecturers love talking about internships and they love it even more when you tell them you have one! You get experience in a work environment and you progress better on your course. indeed.co.uk and Internwise are fab places to look.
Jobs are everywhere in London, but it can still be hard to find one that suits you, fits your time schedule and pays enough to keep you living comfortably. Check out job sites like indeed.co.uk, Student Beans, and Gumtree. Also, Met Temps is a great site to check out if you want a temporary job. Become a Student Ambassador - it pays! Libraries may not have been a huge part of your life before university, but London Met’s libraries are going to becoming a huge part of your daily lifestyle now. With books for everything you might need, you are sure to find some literary support here for your important essays. Check out the library services online to see if your book is there for you to take out or maybe there is an E-book for you to read without even leaving your desk. Just make sure you return your books on time or you’ll find yourself with a growing fine. Mental health is just as important as your physical health. University is a big change for you and it’s not as easy as past graduates always say. It is normal to feel low, anxious, scared and stressed, and you are far from being alone! Many students feel this way, but not all of them feel like they can say it. If you do feel low or anxious, don’t hide it away. Talk to a friend, a teacher, or go to the Hub, which can point you in the right direction. If you don’t feel like talking to someone close to your uni, head to your GP who can help you find the best solution. Represent you and your fellow students by becoming a course representative. Lecturers love to know what students think of their course and it’s a great way for you to express what you love and what you don’t love. It also looks great on your CV. “Sex, baby. Let’s talk about sex.” Salt-n-Pepper were right; let’s talk about sex. If you find you have an issue that requires a trip to a sexual health clinic, there are plenty of options out there for you. For free condoms, birth control, STI tests and pregnancy tests, PULSE on Holloway Road, next door to the university, is free to anyone under 21 - without an appointment. For a bigger service, Archway Sexual Health Centre, which is only a twominute walk from Archway tube station, provides free HIV testing with instant results. Traveling to university is easy! Both Holloway and Aldgate campus have great tube links and bus links. Cheapen your journeys by getting a student Oyster Card and a 16-25 railcard, which will save you a 1/3 on all your rail journeys. It makes going home, visiting friends and exploring close-by cities so much cheaper. Verve - get involved! If you want to take part in something great and show off your wonderful university, get involved with Verve. Whether you’re interested in the radio or TV station or the magazine, we’d love for you to become a part of us. Get in touch with the Students’ Union to know more.

STUDENTS’ UNION OFFICERS - GET TO KNOW YOUR BRAND NEW TEAM We caught up with our brilliant Students’ Union Officers, and got to know them a bit more! We asked a few questions and essentially got the low-down on what these former London Met students are looking forward to...
DIIN I MU SE - PRE SID ENT Q: What are you looking forward to most this year? “The new incoming students, having the chance to meet new people and work on the campaigns I’ve already started during last year and this summer break.” Q: What are some of your hobbies? “I like to binge watch TV series, movies or animes. I love doing this because it’s the only time outside of work I get to shut off. I also like travelling around the city finding new and interesting things to do.”
Q: How did you spend your freshers when you were students? “I was pretty much at all the freshers’ parties! I found the freshers’ fair very interesting, found out more about sports and societies.” Q: What can the students look forward to this year? “Meeting all of the new incoming students and getting the chance to get to know them as well as seeing the returners.”
JES SICA HOARAU - FT OFF ICE R CAS S, SCH OO L OF ART, ARC HIT ECTURE AN D DES IGN AN D THE SCH OO L OF COM PUT ING AN D DIG ITA L ME DIA Q: What are you looking forward to most this year? “I’m looking forward to meeting the new students and welcoming back our returning ones. MEET UP
GET INVOLVED WITH STUDENT ACTIVITIES CATCHING UP WITH LEONIE BARKER, LONDON MET SU’S NEW SPORTS AND SOCIETIES’ COORDINATOR
Hi there! My name is Leoni Barker, and I’m the Sports and Societies’ Coordinator here at London Met Students’ Union
I’d like to give everyone - both returners and Freshers - a warm welcome, and I hope you’re all as excited for the new academic year as I am. Freshers’ is one of the most important events of the year. It’s a fantastic way to make new friends, connect with different
34
people, expose yourself to new ideas and cultures and try something new. First-year jitters can be a little scary, but I assure you there is absolutely nothing to worry about once you get stuck in! Being part of a sports team or a society can be incredibly exciting. Not only do they give you the opportunity to make new connections with a bunch of new people, but most importantly, you’re able to develop skills you already have, or learn something completely new; after all, isn’t that the whole reason that you’ve come to University? As a student here, I was lucky enough to join a sports team in my first year and I was the Captain of the Dance Team for two years in a row. Sports and societies gave me so many wonderful opportunities (I even won Outstanding Sportsperson of the Year last year!), and I would love it if you took advantage of these in your time here. You won’t regret it! This year, we’re making it even easier for you to get involved. If you’re interested in joining a sports team or a society, we’re offering a free trial period for the first two weeks, so you can try any of the activities we offer, free of charge. Come along to our Freshers’ Fairs (3/10 at Holloway, 4/10 at Aldgate) to meet our teams and societies, or come along to our Societies’ workshop on 26/09 to find out more. If you have any questions or queries about sports, societies or Uni life in general, please do not hesitate to contact me. Or you can pop into a designated drop-in session every Friday at the SU from October 4th between 2pm-4pm until November 1st. teamsport.su@londonmet.ac.uk
Catering outlets You’ll find a wide variety of food and drink offers at London Met from a quick confectionery snack to a freshly made traditional or international meal. We are pleased to be launching our exciting NEW menus in September, come and try them out!
