About the
weekend
“ A thoroughly enjoyable weekend musically and in every other way” “A splendid weekend” “ A wonderful package of good accommodation, music, food and company”
T
he London Mozart Players’ weekend at the Grand Hotel is now a permanent and popular fixture in the hotel’s calendar. The 2014 weekend, the twelfth year of the event, features members of the London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble performing two perennial favourites of the repertoire: Schubert’s profound and haunting String Quintet in C major and Mendelssohn’s youthful and exuberant String Octet, an extraordinarily accomplished and mature work, written when the composer was just 16 years old. Sitting alongside these two great central works, a programme of interesting and unusual arrangements for chamber groups has been devised. On Friday night, the LMP Chamber Ensemble feature two works arranged for string quintet: a contemporaneous arrangement of Beethoven’s Horn Sonata and Mozart’s Fantasia for mechanical clock in F minor. On Saturday evening the arrangements are for String Sextet: Haydn’s ‘Echo’ Divertimento and a beautiful arrangement of Mozart’s famous Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, where the solo parts are shared amongst the whole sextet and which breathes new life into a much-loved work.
