F
or the past three years, London On-Water has been developing as Central London’s On-Water Boat Show. Held at the historic and very scenic St. Katharine Docks, located next to Tower Bridge and just a stone’s throw from the City, our biggest hurdle has always been the lack of available land space on which we could present a far greater variety of Exhibitors. This year however, we are trying something different, with the introduction of a spectacular 1200sqm Floating Village. In this village you will find a wonderful array of Exhibitors including yachting holiday companies, cruise lines, boat builders, property, retail and service companies, as well as a fantastic ‘Big-Screen Theatre’ and the Framptons Oyster & Champagne Bar. As a result, London On-Water is now developing not just as London’s premier On-Water Boat Show, but as something far greater - a true Floating Festival, celebrating everything concerned with being on, by or in the water. From Paddleboards to Superyachts and everything in between, plus some great music, lots of cafés, bars and restaurants, London On-Water is three days of fun in the sun (hopefully) and an event for the whole family to enjoy! A TRUE CLASSIC FROM DISCOVERY YACHTS GROUP London On-Water in May will see the launch of the Britannia 74, a remarkable new boutique super yacht from Discovery Yachts Group. Reminiscent of a bygone age but with all the convenience of modern day yachting, everything about the Britannia 74 will be elegant. Easily handled by two people, with push button sailing and just three control ropes, this is luxury sailing with the minimum of fuss. The launch event at the show will feature a scale model and complete designs available to view. The aim is to start production on the first hull in September 2018, delivering the first finished yacht in time for the Southampton Boat Show in September 2019. The Britannia 74 is the brainchild of Sean Langdon, Managing Director of Discovery Yachts Group. “There was a gap in the market between what Spirit offers in terms of classic yachts and our own modern luxury market. The Britannia will sit firmly between these two markets as a classic yacht with all the benefits state of the art technology has to offer. And you don’t need a vast crew to sail her.” Don’t miss the launch event at London On-Water in St Katherine’s Dock on Friday 11th May from 7-9pm when the full specification will be revealed and ingenious plans to take this classic to market.

ow in its fourth year, London On-Water is London’s Spectacular Floating Festival & On-Water Boat Show. Held between 10th - 12th May 2018, St Katharine Docks, Central London’s premier marina (right next to The Tower of London & Tower Bridge) is a very popular gathering point for Londoners working or living in or near the City. This year, London On-Water 2018 will have more than a passing resemblance to Venice, the famous water-locked Italian city, as the addition of a spectacular ‘Floating Village’ located in the middle of the historic Central Basin of St Katharine Docks gives a great atmosphere for everything associated with water. The Big-Screen SUMMIT in the middle of the Floating Village will stage Presentations on a wide-range of subjects, and will be open for all Show Visitors to attend to listen to some of the best experts in their field. Expect to be entertained by speakers from many of the world’s top yacht & boat builders, yacht charter and sailing companies, cruise ship operators, boat retailers, car and bike manufacturers and dealers, equipment & service companies and much more!

A Picturesque Restyled And Reconstructed 18th Century Pub And Restaurant

he Dickens Inn is an original warehouse building near Tower Bridge, Tower of London and the Shard. As an original warehouse building, it’s thought to have housed tea or to have been owned by a local brewery. H
enri Amel was fascinated by sailing from a young age and sailed small yachts as a teenager. Wounded in one eye during the war, he lost his sight completely for several years but never gave up his dream of building yachts that would be robust, comfortable and easy to handle. In 1964 he took over a company in La Rochelle; ARPIN. After ARPIN’s workshops were destroyed in 1968 the current AMEL shipyard was opened in 1969 in PÊrigny, La Rochelle AMEL has always developed its own equipment such as the AMEL sail furling systems in 1983 and the electric retractable bowthruster in 1985. The Super Maramu was the success story of the late 80s and early 90s with 480 built. For Henri Amel this was the highlight of his career and synonymous with the AMEL name. From his death in 2005 all yachts have borne the name AMEL. Entirely designed and built in La Rochelle, current models benefit from fifty years of experience with the AMEL spirit driving every stage of construction, from choice of materials to the finishing of woodwork, as well as ongoing customer support throughout the world. Today, AMEL staff number around 125 with three models in the range: the AMEL 50, AMEL 55 and AMEL 64. Interior design and external lines reflect modern trends but AMEL fundamentals are still respected: safety, easy handling and comfort at sea in every sailing condition.

Inherently Unfair?
I
nheritance Tax is widely viewed as unfair, and even the chancellor agrees it’s complex: only effective and early planning can minimise its impact on your estate. Well overdue, perhaps, was the news that Chancellor Philip Hammond has asked the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) to review Inheritance Tax (IHT) with a view to simplifying the regime. In writing to the OTS, he acknowledged that
“IHT, and the system within which it operates, is particularly complex”. Currently, if your net estate is worth more than the standard nil-rate band of £325,000, 40p in tax is charged for every pound that exceeds the threshold; except that, broadly, if you leave your main residence to a lineal descendant, £100,000 is added to that nil-rate band (rising to £175,000 in 2020/21). Unused elements of both allowances are transferable on death to a surviving spouse or civil partner. The regime has been criticised also for being discriminatory against those who do not own their own home, those who do not have children, and those who are not married or in a civil partnership. Even if there is potential to simplify IHT exemptions, it’s probably too much to hope that the tax will be scrapped. After all, a cash-strapped Exchequer seems increasingly reliant on taxing people’s estates posthumously. By 2023, the UK’s Exchequer is expected to raise more than £6 billion from IHT.1

That said, several governments around the world have convinced themselves that reforming or repealing estate taxes is vital to their political survival. If Donald Trump’s ambition is realised, the United States will join a growing list of nations where taxing people’s estates is being phased out or abandoned. Sweden abolished the practice in 2004, while Hong Kong and Russia did the same in 2006. In Norway, inheritance and gift taxes were abolished in January 2014.2 IHT is often referred to as a ‘voluntary tax’, and it does seem that inertia or ignorance is largely to blame for wealth ending up in the hands of the taxman rather than surviving family members. The fact is that with some careful planning, those with estates currently worth more than the nil-rate band can legitimately reduce their IHT liability, or possibly pay nothing at all. Take advice IHT often falls on the ill-prepared and unadvised. That’s why it’s important to seek financial advice, so that all your assets are properly protected. earch and Rescue Experience is a brand new and exciting team building experience for corporate companies, or any organisation looking for a unique type of team building or staff training day. Our small team of experienced RYA instructors have years of knowledge and expertise most of whom have been former RNLI crew or Coastguards, ensuring clients get the best and safest training and the best experience using a former Atlantic 75 rigid inflatable lifeboat. Team Lifeboat will run regular team building days for corporate companies or organisations wanting a unique and innovative training day out on the water at the Queen Mother Reservoir in association with Datchet Water Sailing Club. Participants perform the role of coastguards co-ordinating a variety of staged incidents out on the water (within sight of Windsor Castle), whilst also taking it in turns to crew the lifeboat and deal with what you’ve been sent to or play the role of the rescued! It might be searching for a canoeist, picking up someone from the water or providing first aid to someone on board a pleasure boat. Having been taught useful first aid and VHF radio skills, given an input on search and rescue techniques and of course, given the opportunity to helm the lifeboat, guests can successfully complete and receive a recognised qualification, with the option of going on to further their training or use the opportunity to signpost them to volunteering themselves.

Buying A Boat Is Exciting - And An Important Investment Boat Purchase and Warranties Buying a boat is exciting - and an important investment that you’ll want to protect. Paul Finney from Boats & Yachts Warranty talks us through different types of boat sales, plus seller obligations with regards to guarantees and warranty. It is important to remember that a guarantee or warranty acts as an addition to a buyer’s statutory rights. What is a guarantee? A guarantee is a conditional promise by a manufacturer or dealer to repair, replace or refund free of charge, goods that do not meet the specifications set out in the purchase particulars. They are normally for a set period of time for a failure attributable to manufacturing defects. What is a warranty? Warranties/extended warranties, provide cover for mechanical and electrical failure of specified components, usually after the initial guarantee has run out. However, it can run the same time as a guarantee where it offers additional cover. Good warranties include clearly defined terms explaining what is, and what is not covered; claim limits; how to make a claim and how your repair will be completed. New Boat Sales: New boats are sold with a manufacturer’s guarantee (sometimes called warranty). However, watch out for restrictions and service requirements they impose. Some manufacturers now provide a limited extension to the initial guarantee period e.g. 3+2 year. Dealer stock used boat sales: Such boats are sold and owned by the dealer. They are legally required to include a warranty. The buyer also benefits from protection under the new Consumer Goods Act. However, the length and terms of such warranties vary. Beware! It’s vital to check that your dealer warranty meets your requirements AND has clear terms and conditions. Many dealer warranties are ‘Return to Base’ (RTB) meaning, it must be returned to the purchase location for repair - difficult if you bought in Scotland and keep your craft in Spain! Brokerage used boat sales: Most boats are sold on a brokerage basis. The broker sells the craft on the owner’s behalf and charges a commission. Such purchases are classed as a private sale between the owner (vendor) and the buyer. There is no warranty given or implied, so it is important prospective buyers satisfy themselves as to the boat’s condition.

Private used boat sales: Just like brokerage sales, such sales don’t include a warranty - the term ‘buyer beware’ and ‘sold as seen’ come to mind! Extended warranty plans offer peace of mind! If you’d rather feel sure that your craft is properly protected, then an extended warranty plan could be for you. These plans cover mechanical breakdown. In most cases, they can be bought at the time of boat purchase, either directly, or through a dealer - or at any point after. If your craft suffers mechanical breakdown of a covered component within the extended warranty period, you simply contact your warranty provider. Make sure you look out for clearly defined terms and conditions as well as claims procedures. Once the repair has been assessed and approved, a good warranty provider will settle the bill directly with the repairer - so you won’t even have out-ofpocket expenses! While standard extended warranty plans cover engines and various mechanical components, the better providers, like Boats & Yachts Warranty, offer the option to customise cover to suit your craft including; generators, thrusters, hydraulics, navigation equipment etc. So! Make sure your warranty covers the locations you sail in; has clear terms and offers a straightforward claims process!

t’s what I tell everyone and it should be tattooed on my forehead: high season summer is no time to go cruising the coasts of Italy and France. At the beginning of July, most of the locals shut up shop and go on holiday. A lot of them have boats of one sort or another and so the coasts and islands are busy with everyone who has something that floats out on the water. So just what was I doing there in July and August? The usual excuses apply. We had work to finish off. A friend was ill and needed comfort. And when we finally got out to Skylax in Greece, the job list didn’t quite work out as
planned and everything just took longer than we thought. That left us setting off for Italy in mid-June and all set to arrive just in time for the high season. “Well so be it,” we said, and if we have to shell out for an expensive marina here or there, we would just have to grin and bear it. Not that we intended to do that often, but if the weather turns or an anchorage proves to be untenable then there is usually the option of good, if expensive, shelter nearby. It turned out to be a fairly windy summer. Is it just me or do I detect the seasons moving forward by one month or six weeks. Most of the evidence is anecdotal, mine included,
but it does seem as if settled summer patterns are later in the year and run into what used to be early autumn. We had three goes at leaving the Ionian for Roccella Ionica or the Strait of Messina depending on the weather. On the first we had just left the bottom of Levkas when we got a text from a friend in Messina who was delivering a boat from France to Greece. ‘Gale blowing,’ the text read, ‘Expect to be here for another day or so.’ We double-checked and sure enough a gale warning had just been issued for the Ionian. We were to have one more attempt before we finally left nearly a week later. Roccella Ionica on the sole of

club rule, but he had just spotted a nervous newbie crew. He took us through the race stage by stage with sound advice. This was mostly to find clear water to avoid close quarters situations. We took this on board and set out a planned route I had assumed that the more we spoke to other skippers and crew the more confident I would get, but nobody was being reassuring about the weather. Wind was to be a typical southwesterly but Force 6/7 outside the Solent. We agreed to get Ceilidh across the start line and any further would be a bonus. The novices fully expected us to get round for a champagne finish, but we would be well past the start

a team and learned a lot. Although far from mastery, I was confident we could get round safely in light conditions. When the forecasts started firming up for heavy winds on race day I was disappointed we would most likely have to pull out. Being in Cowes before race day was a brilliant part of the whole experience. The excitement and camaraderie among crews new and old made us feel part of something special. We visited the Island Sailing Club where Commodore Mark Wynter approached us. I assumed we had broken a

fresh bread when someone noticed a rowing boat bobbing by less than a biscuit’s toss on our starboard beam. It was one of those dreadnought pulling vessels with cuddies fore and aft, plastered with sponsors’ stickers. Nothing unusual there, you might think. After all, the oceans are stiff with these contraptions nowadays. The only thing was, there was nobody in the well where the rowers go about their daily task of 18

n the June edition last year I shared my novice perspective on preparations for the classic Round the Island Race. My wife Rachel and I had just had our first few days sailing on the south coast with Ceilidh, our then newly purchased Westerly Regatta. We had not raced our previous boat and were about to train with three novice crew. Angela and Mark had never sailed before and it was several years since Julie had been on the water. We were looking forward to a fun day in the sun going around the Isle of Wight, but gained a much more intense experience. During three training weekends in a range of weather we gelled as

The 58 offers the versatility of a shoal draft centreboard keel, allowing owners to explore waters not normally accessible to yachts of this size, combined with outstanding up-wind performance. Twin spade rudders ensure fingerlight control, even in boisterous conditions. On deck, the 58 is designed for easy sailing and outdoor living. The helmsman has all of the main sailing controls at his fingertips, and she can genuinely be sailed singlehanded. ardys have been in production for over 40 years and over 4,000 have been built. Recent years have seen the concentration being on smaller numbers of very high quality build boats, all with the emphasis on great sea-keeping qualities. Our customer base even includes the RNLI who have two Hardy 42s used for crew training. We have six semi-displacement, Andrew Wolstenholme hull designs from the 32 to 65 which, with various coachroof configurations, give us a range that can meet most requirements – whether for aft cockpit and flybridge to low profile designs for inland waters. Every Hardy is individually built for her owner and is therefore optimized to her intended use. Possibilities include twin or single engine installations, interior layout variations and many interior finish options. Every Hardy shares the same DNA – sturdily built hulls easily capable of taking the stresses and strains of bad weather, designs that can maintain speed in comfort in adverse conditions, extremely high engineering and finishing standards, and a plethora of proper sea-going features such as safe, well protected side decks and plenty of handholds. In recognition, the First Sea Lord invited the Club to apply for its own blue ensign – the only known instance of such an invitation being made. Just a few years later, several club members participated in the Dunkirk evacuation. Although many survived, to this day there is a tattered Little Ship Club ensign hanging in a frame on the wall at the club with the poignant legend: “Found on the beach at Dunkirk - owner unknown”. Today, the club is a vibrant hub in the heart of London with a community that extends across the world.

This 32.5m (106ft 6in) variant sets the tone that takes Numarine out of its comfort zone of performance motor yachts into the world of long-range go-anywhere cruising. The 32XP yacht has more than 3,550ft² of living and social space, with 515ft² in the saloon alone. The owner’s stateroom has about 430ft² and the four guest staterooms total nearly 1,000. What the numbers add up to, combined with floor-to-ceiling windows in some areas, is an overall sense of light and space. The hull was designed for efficiency, with a top speed of 14 knots, via twin CAT 715bhp engines. It cruises at 12 knots, although at 9 knots the yacht has a maximum range of 4,000nm. Beyond its intrepid hull, the superstructure is unusually contemporary for an explorer yacht, with its oversized windows and elegant hardtop.

The 645ft² flybridge is a perfect party platform, with comfortable sofas, a dining table for 12 and a full wet bar. On the deck below, the owner’s cabin includes a walk-in closet, bathroom, and exclusive access to the aft deck. The aft deck also plays host to the 9m RIB and a pair of jet skis (if you want them) or even a car. The main deck has a second master suite, with a large bedroom and separate his-and-her bathrooms that share a large rain-forest shower. On the same deck, a professional galley (with four full-size fridges, freezers, and cooking equipment for long voyages) connects via a pantry to the open-plan saloon. Two VIP double cabins and two twin cabins all with en-suite bathrooms on the deck below, along with crew quarters for five via a separate entrance, complete the accommodation. Particular attention has been paid to reducing noise and vibration on the 32XP and partnering with Silent Line helped surpass RINA’s ‘Comfort Class’ standards in the 50 meter (165ft) class.
