Welcome to the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2013/14 season We are delighted to be returning to Brighton Dome for another season of four Saturday evening concerts, and once again we are proud to be working with brilliant international soloists and conductors. Opening the season on Saturday 9 November is Mendelssohn’s joyful Symphony No. 4, inspired by the colours and atmosphere of Italy. Charismatic cellist Leonard Elschenbroich joins the Orchestra to play Dvorˇák’s lyrical Cello Concerto.
Concluding the season is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 on Saturday 22 March, which the Orchestra released as a recording to great critical acclaim in 2012. Also on the programme is Bruch’s First Violin Concerto performed by virtuoso Liza Ferschtman. We do hope you will join us for our 2013/14 season which promises to be rich with musical talent and variety.

Other season highlights include Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 performed by pianist Michael Roll on Saturday 30 November, the Orchestra conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, while Vasily Petrenko leads a romantic concert of Berlioz, Rachmaninoff and Brahms on Saturday 22 February.

Saturday 9 November 2013 | 7.30pm Brighton Dome, Concert Hall Dvorˇák Cello Concerto Rossini Overture, William Tell Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 (Italian) Daniele Rustioni conductor Leonard Elschenbroich cello Dvorˇák had intended to end his Cello Concerto with a rhapsodic flourish. But on hearing of the death of his beloved sister-in-law, the composer instead wrote a delicate, tender song for the cello in which her memory is enshrined. Bathed in southern warmth, Felix Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony contains some of his most exhilarating music, its striding opening theme lunging out over pulsating winds. Such infectious joie de vivre has made Rossini’s overture to the opera William Tell one of the most iconic works in history, a raucous gallop that has proved infectious for nearly two centuries.

Kodály Dances of Galánta Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 Dvorˇák Symphony No. 7

Andrés Orozco-Estrada conductor Michael Roll piano When the London Philharmonic Society asked Antonín Dvorˇák for a new symphony in 1884, the composer knew he had to deliver something special. In the resulting Seventh, the doubts and frustrations Dvorˇák experienced as a composer are defeated by music of compelling argument, triumphing over its own nervous energy in the final bars with a glorious plunge into the brightness of D major. In between that and Zoltán Kodály’s infectious Slovakian dances comes one of Beethoven’s most moving concertos. In his Fourth Piano Concerto the composer famously ‘tamed the furies’ in music that combined virtuosity with delicacy like none before it.

Saturday 22 February 2014 | 7.30pm Brighton Dome, Concert Hall Berlioz Overture, Le Corsaire Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Brahms Symphony No. 2 Vasily Petrenko conductor Kirill Gerstein piano Overlooking Lake Wörthersee in the small Austrian resort of Pörtschach, Johannes Brahms set about creating a symphony that captured all he saw: a clear, light day; the infinite beauty of the sunset; the stillness of night; a peaceful awakening and gratitude for another day – the miracle of life. And yet its musicians were to play, said Brahms, as if ‘with a ribbon of mourning around their arm’. Such meeting of glowing melancholy and piercing brightness created what many consider Brahms’s finest symphony. In contrast Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is a rapturous and devious dance, played here by the supremely gifted Kirill Gerstein.

Saturday 22 March 2014 | 7.30pm Brighton Dome, Concert Hall Wagner Siegfried Idyll Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 Joseph Swensen conductor Liza Ferschtman violin The workings of fate were an obsessive theme for Tchaikovsky – in his private life and in his public music. As he grappled with his forbidden homosexuality, his failing health and his crippling self-doubt in the summer of 1888, Tchaikovsky sat down to write a symphony that he hoped would save him from ‘the inscrutable design of providence’. And, for once, Tchaikovsky discovered the joy of optimism. The overwhelming theme of the Symphony was hope, communicated through music of typical power, emotion and brilliance. Before it, a piece concerned not so much with opposing forces as beauty and virtuosity: Bruch’s spectacular Violin Concerto played by the brilliant Liza Ferschtman.

Brighton Dome is situated on Church Street in the heart of historic Brighton, on the Royal Pavilion Estate. It comprises three spaces – the Concert Hall, Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.
The Concert Hall has several specially designed seat positions as well as lift access and accessible toilets (RADAR keys in operation). A companion sitting in a neighbouring seat may be admitted free of charge.

How to find us
Parking The nearest car park to Brighton Dome is the Church Street Theatre Car Park. This car park has launched a new evening rate of just £5.00 for parking between 5.30pm and midnight. The car park is a 2-minute walk from the venue. In addition Brighton Dome & Festival Members can save an extra 30% on top (making it just £3.50 per visit). The Lanes car park on Black Lion Street, accessed from Grand Junction Road on the seafront, is a five-minute walk to the venue and charges £4.50 to park from 6pm to midnight. * Car park charges correct at time of going to press.
