Welcome to the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2012/13 season
In 2012/13 the Orchestra is proud to celebrate its 80th anniversary season and we are happy to return to Brighton Dome for four more Saturday evening concerts. This season we are delighted to bring the very best conductors and artists to perform with us in Brighton; Osmo Vänskä teams up with violinist Christian Tetzlaff, and American Marin Alsop leads a concert of works by Gershwin and Copland, joined by her compatriot, the pianist Garrick Ohlsson. Highlights of this season include Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony which opens the season (3 November), an all-Sibelius concert conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste (2 February), Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (23 February) and, closing the season, Elgar’s popular Enigma Variations (16 March). As ever, we are proud to continue fostering young talent. This year we are joined by cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan, First Prize and Gold Medal winner at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, to perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto on 16 March 2013. OSMO VÄNSKÄ conductor CHRISTIAN TETZLAFF violin One night in 2007, conductor Osmo Vänskä took the London Philharmonic Orchestra through the thrilling orchestral showpiece that is Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony. The performance – of rare involvement, energy and beauty – became a critically acclaimed recording. Now Vänskä, whose concerts with the Orchestra invariably combine sparks of energy with startling levels of finesse, returns for a second look at this most irrepressible symphony of yearning and longing, with Dvorˇák’s treacletoned Violin Concerto and music of plaintive rhapsody from Carl Nielsen to begin.

It was often when most frustrated that Jean Sibelius created his most enduring and moving masterworks. The composer’s dream of becoming a virtuoso violinist was dashed when he failed an audition for the Vienna Philharmonic, but that only added charge to the inspiration behind his resplendent Violin Concerto, a testament in music to the virtuoso Sibelius never was. At his deepest depths of despair, diagnosed with cancer and fighting off debts, Sibelius created his Fourth Symphony; perhaps his most stark, evocative, chilling and moving. Its dark, craggy outcrops and shadows conspire toward the formation of one of the most unusual but inspiring symphonies ever created.

Just as Antonín Dvorˇák lived the American dream through his touching symphonic hymn to the slave songs and spirituals of America, so Aaron Copland expressed the hope of his countrymen in the shining optimism of his Fanfare for the Common Man – heard here alongside Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman. Two slices of pianistic Americana complete the programme: the slinky blue notes and thumping jazz rhythms of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and the touching, playful simplicity of Copland’s beautiful Piano Concerto. Marin Alsop and Garrick Ohlsson are on hand to give this concert an authentic American touch.

Two masterpieces of manipulation: Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony, built on an infamous four-note theme, and Elgar’s towering variations based entirely on a touching and chameleon-like improvised tune. Few works offer the cumulative power and familiarity that these do, and few offer orchestral brilliance hand-in-hand with dazzling intellect and resource. In between we hear Schumann’s Cello Concerto – an isle of bliss in an otherwise troubled life. And how you hear it in the music; through the touching song of the cello it marries sweeping greatness with technical brilliance, radiating content through its human beauty.

The Concert Hall has several specially designed seat positions as well as lift access and accessible toilets (RADAR keys in operation). A companion sitting in a neighbouring seat may be admitted free of charge.
Brighton Dome is situated on Church Street in the heart of historic Brighton, on the Royal Pavilion Estate. It comprises three spaces – the Concert Hall, Corn Exchange and Pavilion Theatre.

Parking The nearest car park to Brighton Dome is the Church Street Theatre Car Park. This car park has launched a new evening rate of just £4.50 for parking between 5.30pm and midnight. The car park is a 2-minute walk from the venue. In addition Brighton Dome & Festival Members can save an extra 30% on top (making it just £3.15 per visit). The Lanes car park on Black Lion Street, accessed from Grand Junction Road on the seafront, is a five-minute walk to the venue and charges £4.50 to park from 6pm to midnight. * Car park charges correct at time of going to press.
