‘This was an outstanding performance from the LPO: virtuosically detailed in articulation and colour, engaged to a level beyond professionalism.’ The Independent on Sunday, April 2010
The warmth and richness of the playing was exceptional, with every department contributing its share of complex timbres and holding them together in a finely achieved sound picture.’ The Guardian, February 2011

Welcome to the 2011/12 season at Brighton Dome
Building on last season’s success the London Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to return to Brighton Dome for four Saturday evening concerts. We have an exciting season ahead offering a range of talented conductors and soloists and inspiring programmes to suit all tastes – lush, romantic melodies from Rachmaninoff for Valentine’s weekend, Vaughan Williams’s meditational masterpiece The Lark Ascending, and exotic Spanish flair from the pens of Manuel de Falla and Antonio José.
Timothy Walker AM Chief Executive and Artistic Director
We are proud to continue our tradition of fostering bright young talent. We welcome Eduardo Portal, a Spanish conductor whose star has been rising rapidly in recent years, Russian pianist Boris Giltburg, and violinist Fanny Clamagirand, a First Prize winner at the Monte Carlo Violin Masters Competition and International Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna. Closing the season, the internationally renowned conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier makes a welcome return to Brighton Dome. Having thrilled audiences with his visit in 2010, on this occasion he combines the fiery Fourth Symphony of Tchaikovsky with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a work of sheer ebullience and joy. We hope you can join us for another season of wonderful music-making in the South East’s cultural hotspot.

JOSÉ Suite, The Muleteer FALLA Nights in the Gardens of Spain FALLA Suites Nos. 1 and 2, The Three-Cornered Hat MUSSORGSKY (orch. Ravel) Pictures at an Exhibition
EDUARDO PORTAL conductor JAVIER PERIANES piano Manuel de Falla took such fastidious care with all his music that those works he did finish are all exquisitely crafted gems, each encapsulating something utterly in tune with Spanish culture. His fiery flamenco-inspired ballet score The Three-Cornered Hat is conducted here by a young Spaniard who has made quite an impression on concert-goers in the last two years, Eduardo Portal. He finishes with Mussorgsky’s celebrated set of pictures in music – a touching walk past etchings and sketches by Victor Hartmann infused with the orchestral colour and power of Maurice Ravel.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 Kreisler (arr. Rachmaninoff/orch. Leytush) Liebesleid Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2
Neeme Järvi conductor Boris Giltburg piano Here is the very height of touching, heartrending romance from the composer who arguably did both those qualities better than any other. There’s a reason Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is his most popular: it’s his most rapturous, his most readily moving and his most sweepingly emotive. There’s also a reason his Second Symphony is played more than any other of its companions. Here thick, rich textures and sombre harmonies wrap themselves around Rachmaninoff’s finely contoured melodies, the music smouldering, flaring up and eventually propelling itself towards a whirling, spirited climax. Surrender to the alluring warmth and beauty of Rachmaninoff. In co-operation with the Serge Rachmaninoff Foundation.

WEBER Overture, Oberon MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto VAUGHAN WILLIAMS The Lark Ascending SIBELIUS Symphony No. 5
FABIEN GABEL conductor FANNY CLAMAGIRAND violin Vaughan Williams’s lark soars skywards – spiralling, floating and propelling its way towards the firmament with a sense of aspiration and discovery: a lone creature set against the expanse of the skies; a single violin countering the weight of the orchestra. When he saw a flock of sixteen swans taking flight over his Järvenpää villa, Sibelius knew he’d glimpsed the blazing light of optimism amid a sea of dark depression. He thrust the swans’ sure but graceful ascent into the final movement of his Fifth Symphony, which itself soars optimistically upwards, free from its creator’s earthly concerns.

MENDELSSOHN Overture, Ruy Blas BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 1 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4
Yan Pascal Tortelier conductor Hong Xu piano Fate. It has hung dagger-like over the art of music since Beethoven seized it by the throat. In 1877, Tchaikovsky felt its weighty hand on his shoulder. His artistic response was a Symphony unlike anything he’d created before: ‘This is fate’, he revealed to his confidante Nadezhda von Meck, explaining the opening notes of his heart-onsleeve Fourth Symphony. But by the Symphony’s final chapter, Tchaikovsky’s darkness had turned to light. ‘Rejoice in others’ rejoicing’, he urged Nadezhda, and the Symphony veered towards the sort of unstoppable, ebullient confidence and joy that Beethoven captured so gloriously in his First Piano Concerto.
