London Philharmonic Orchestra 2015/16 Concert Season Brighton Dome Concert Hall 01273 709709 brightondome.org

‘ This was a whiplash interpretation, swift to scorch and devastatingly focused.’ The Arts Desk, September 2014

Welcome to our 2015/16 season at Brighton Dome We are delighted to return to Brighton for our fifteenth season of concerts at Brighton Dome Concert Hall. Opening the season with a programme of rapturous French music on Saturday 14 November is conductor Robin Ticciati, who began his tenure as Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera, of which the LPO is Resident Symphony Orchestra, in 2014. We’re particularly excited to welcome Andrés Orozco-Estrada back to Brighton Dome where he made his debut with the LPO in 2013. This time in his new role as Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra, Orozco-Estrada conducts a programme including Stravinsky’s luminous Firebird Suite and Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto on Saturday 27 February.

As always, we welcome exciting emerging talent to share the stage with us, such as prize-winning pianist Stefan C´iric´, who performs Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 on Saturday 16 January, and more established world-class soloists including Classic FM Award-winning classical guitarist Miloš, who gives a rare performance of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Guitar Concerto No. 1 on Saturday 16 April. We hope you will join us for another exciting season of music-making at Brighton Dome.

Timothy Walker AM Chief Executive and Artistic Director

As part of the worldwide Shakespeare anniversary celebrations of 2016, we are presenting a series of Shakespeare-inspired works in both our London and Brighton seasons, including Strauss’s Macbeth on Saturday 27 February and excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet on Saturday 16 April.

NOVEMBER

Saturday 14 November 2015 7.30pm Brighton Dome Concert Hall Fauré Suite, Pelléas et Mélisande Ravel Piano Concerto in G major Ravel Valses nobles et sentimentales Debussy La mer Robin Ticciati conductor Louis Schwizgebel piano Robin Ticciati leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra in this celebration of exquisite orchestral craftsmanship. At the heart of this concert is Ravel’s toe-tapping concerto, a musical postcard from the streets of Harlem where he experienced the harmonic exoticism and rhythmic drive of jazz. The composer is a little more restrained in his teasing waltzes, which come with the same clarity and luminous restraint that imbues Fauré’s delicate reflection of the tragedy of Pelléas et Mélisande. To finish comes Debussy’s orchestral depiction of the sea, sketched down on the coast in Eastbourne: a swirling musical canvas unrivalled in its subtlety and evocation.

JANUARY

Saturday 16 January 2016 7.30pm Brighton Dome Concert Hall Mozart Overture, Lucio Silla Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 Beethoven Symphony No. 7 Adrian Prabava conductor Stefan C´iric´ piano Not until the upheavals of the 20th century would another composer conceive of a piece so controlled and driven by rhythm as Beethoven did in his Seventh Symphony. Here is a work in which you hear the controlling rhythms in almost every bar, whether in the propulsive energy of the outer movements or in the inevitable tread of the slow march. While his first Piano Concerto had spoken of the love and yearning of a young man, when he came to write his second 22 years later, Brahms was a changed being. This intimate yet wholly magisterial concerto – Brahms’s ultimate musical summation of civilisation – is performed by prize-winning pianist Stefan C´iric´.

FEBRUARY

Saturday 27 February 2016 7.30pm Brighton Dome Concert Hall R Strauss Macbeth Khachaturian Violin Concerto Stravinsky Firebird Suite (1945 version) Andrés Orozco-Estrada conductor Kristóf Baráti violin The Stravinsky who would change music forever was first glimpsed in the luminous 1910 score, The Firebird. In this blazing ballet music, Stravinsky unleashed the pictorial powers with which he would shock and enchant generations of theatregoers. The composer had found the perfect subject matter in the compelling collision of the evil powers of Kashchei the Magician with the forceful good of the irrepressible Firebird; the ballet would end in an infernal dance, ripe for Stravinsky’s own brand of violent syncopation. Principal Guest Conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada conducts the condensed Suite from the ballet alongside the rhythmic vivacity and emotional fervour of Khachaturian’s rhapsodic Violin Concerto.

APRIL

Saturday 16 April 2016 7.30pm Brighton Dome Concert Hall De Falla The Three-cornered Hat (Suite No. 2) Castelnuovo-Tedesco Guitar Concerto No. 1 Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet (excerpts) Jaime Martín conductor Miloš Karadaglic´ guitar

© Margaret Malandruccolo

Long before the Kirov Ballet staged their Romeo and Juliet ballet using Prokofiev’s music in 1940, the bulk of the score was widely heard in a suite in which the composer arranged the most vivid moments of the score for concert performance. Audiences can’t have been in any doubt as to the characters and events Prokofiev was describing in what is surely one of the most remarkable conjurings of character, mood and circumstance in musical history. Before this ground-shaking depiction of Shakespeare’s Montagues and Capulets comes a rare performance of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s beautifully intoxicating Guitar Concerto No.1 by star guitarist, Miloš.
