2016/17 Concert Season at Brighton Dome Concert Hall

Welcome to the London Philharmonic We look forward to welcoming conductor Orchestra’s 2016/17 season at Brighton Dome Rory Macdonald back to Brighton Dome where he We are delighted to be returning to Brighton for our sixteenth season of concerts at Brighton Dome Concert Hall. Inspired by Osmo Vänskä’s Sibelius Symphony Cycle in our London season, we’re thrilled that Vänskä will be opening the season on Saturday 29 October with Sibelius’s haunting Swan of Tuonela and the monumental Symphony No. 7, paired with Walton’s Italian fantasy of a violin concerto, performed by Tasmin Little. As always, we are pleased to introduce you to exciting emerging talent throughout our season in Brighton, and the first of these is young American cellist Dane Johansen who performs Walton’s sunlit Cello Concerto on Saturday 26 November. Conductor Joshua Weilerstein brings limitless youthful energy, and teams up with British pianist Mark Bebbington, to explore the dark passions of Rachmaninoff’s best-loved piano concerto on Saturday 29 April.

made his debut with the LPO in 2015 in a ‘glorious showpiece of a concert’; this time he conducts a programme including Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1 and Elgar’s Enigma Variations on Saturday 11 March. We do hope you will be able to join us for what is set to be an exciting season of concerts at Brighton Dome.

‘Other composers serve colourful cocktails’, said Jean Sibelius. ‘I serve pure cold water’. Not that there’s anything cold about the haunting Swan of Tuonela – or, for that matter, Walton’s glittering Italian fantasy of a violin concerto, played on this occasion by Tasmin Little. But there’s no mistaking the purity and freshness of the Finnish landscape as evoked in Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony – it’s some of the most serenely beautiful music he ever wrote. Osmo Vänskä has this music in his blood, and he ends the evening with the monumental Seventh Symphony: a life’s work, brought to completion in a single mighty gesture.

For Tchaikovsky, Glinka was the acorn from which all Russian music grew. So there’s no more fitting upbeat to Tchaikovsky’s impassioned Fourth Symphony than this delightful miniature from the ballrooms of Imperial St Petersburg – think War and Peace. And then, with a shattering fanfare, Tchaikovsky lets fly with the symphony in which he poured out his soul: a no-holds-barred autobiography, told in music of raw emotion and dazzling colour. It’s a gripping showcase for guest conductor Dima Slobodeniouk; first, though, he joins the young American cellist Dane Johansen to bask in the Mediterranean warmth of Walton’s sunlit Cello Concerto.

Rory Macdonald conductor Igor Tchetuev piano In the right hands, one tune can unlock a universe. Dvorˇák took a half-forgotten song and turned it into an orchestral work of magical warmth and colour. Tchaikovsky used one of his very greatest melodies to throw down an epic challenge to a virtuoso pianist: the brilliant Igor Tchetuev picks up the gauntlet this evening. And Elgar – well, he never told anyone the secret of his Enigma. Instead, he created a musical portrait-gallery that’s become part of our national life. Renew your acquaintance with Dan the Bulldog, Nimrod, and all the rest of Elgar’s ‘friends pictured within’ as Rory Macdonald conducts the LPO in music that goes straight to the heart.

Pathétique means ‘full of emotion’. And from the tragic depths of its opening to its final, heartbreaking moments, every note of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony is drenched in feeling. This is Russian music at its most honest, its most romantic, and its most ravishingly tuneful – and it’s quite simply unforgettable. Conductor Joshua Weilerstein brings limitless youthful energy, and teams up with British pianist Mark Bebbington to explore the dark passions of Rachmaninoff’s best-loved piano concerto. First though, Shostakovich meets Shakespeare, and decides to pull his leg. Expect shivers, surprises and pitch-black humour in the extraordinary Hamlet Suite.

Recent recording highlights Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3/10 Songs (arr. Jurowski) with Vladimir Jurowski LPO-0088 ‘Jurowski’s reading of Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony was most remarkable for its discipline, the brief lament for horn, clarinet and cello so audaciously quiet and finely blended that you had to hold your breath.’ The Times, May 2015

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5/Coriolan Overture with Klaus Tennstedt LPO-0087 ‘The remastered concerts show off Tennstedt’s abilities at their best – dynamic, inspired and spontaneous.
