On stage today Michael Seal conductor Rachel Leach presenter London Philharmonic Orchestra Screen animations by Yeast Culture

Roll up, roll up! Today’s FUNharmonics concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra takes us to a bustling Russian fair, where we’ll hear the story of the mischievous puppet Petrushka. We’ll meet his love interest, the talented Ballerina, and his rival, the dastardly Pirate – all brought to life through Stravinsky’s glorious music and specially commissioned screen animations. Along the way we’ll sing a song about a ghostly Victorian circus troupe, so get your best singing voices ready!

Although Stravinsky was born in Russia, he moved around a lot: he spent time living in France and Switzerland and later moved to the USA. Stravinsky's music moved around, too – he wrote pieces in lots of different styles. He wrote Russian-sounding music, music that looked back to previous centuries, modern music, opera and religious music. But it was his music for ballets that really made his name. The music for the ballet The Firebird made him famous as a composer and the following year he composed Petrushka – the work we hear today.
