Welcome to the Royal Festival Hall and to today’s joyful performance of Appalachian Spring! Aaron Copland’s iconic music will take us back to 19th-century rural Pennsylvania, where a young couple prepare for their wedding day and look ahead to a bright future. Originally composed for a ballet, Appalachian Spring is thought of as typically American classical music, and features some very famous tunes that you might know already. We will also hear Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, which celebrates the American dream of the 20th century, and celebrate the ‘uncommon woman’ with Joan Tower’s brilliant fanfare, as well as learning more about Copland’s own American dream through our participation song, One Hundred Years Ago …. Along the way we’ll also take a trip on a ship across the Atlantic with pioneering Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen. So, pack your bags, warm up your singing voice, and get ready for our musical adventure across America!
