Carols at Waterloo – Friday 9 December

After a two-year Covid hiatus, this Friday (9 December) we’re bringing back one of our favourite LPO traditions –Christmas carols at Waterloo railway station. Members of our brass section and friends, plus singers from the London Philharmonic Choir, will be spreading some festive cheer on the main concourse from 5pm onwards, raising money for Save the Children. James MacMillan: Christmas Oratorio

New on the LPO Label is James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio, recorded live at the work’s UK premiere in December 2021. Conducted by Mark Elder, it features the London Philharmonic Choir, soprano Lucy Crowe and baritone Roderick Williams.

Composed in 2019, the Christmas Oratorio embraces a Scots Gaelic lullaby, English poetry and Bible passages, all recounting the Nativity. MacMillan deftly weaves together these strands in his trademark expressive and immediate language, reflecting both his Scottish roots and his deeply-held Catholic faith. Each summer we’re resident at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, combining the magic of opera with Glyndebourne’s glorious setting in the Sussex countryside.

We’re always at the forefront of technology, finding new ways to share our music globally. During the pandemic period we launched ‘LPOnline’: over 100 videos of performances, insights and introductions to playlists, which led to us being named runner-up in the Digital Classical Music Awards 2020. During 2022/23 we’ll be working once again with Marquee TV to broadcast selected live concerts, so you can share or relive the wonder from your own living room.

Our conductors

Our Principal Conductors have included some of the greatest historic names like Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur. In 2021 Edward Gardner became our 13th Principal Conductor, taking the Orchestra into its tenth decade. Vladimir Jurowski became Conductor Emeritus in recognition of his impact as Principal Conductor from 2007–21. Karina Canellakis is our current Principal Guest Conductor and Brett Dean our Composer-in-Residence.

Everyone will have heard the London Philharmonic Orchestra, whether it’s playing the world’s National Anthems at every medal ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, our iconic recording with Pavarotti that made Nessun Dorma a global football anthem, or closing the flotilla at The Queen’s Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Next generations

We’re committed to inspiring the next generation of musicians and music-lovers: there’s nothing we love more than seeing the joy of children and families enjoying their first musical moments, and we’re passionate about equipping schools and teachers through schools’ concerts, resources and training. Reflecting our values of collaboration and inclusivity, our OrchLab and Open Sound Ensemble projects offer music-making opportunities for adults and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Today’s young instrumentalists are the orchestral members of the future, so we’re committed to offering them opportunities to progress. Our LPO Junior Artists programme is leading the way in creating pathways into the profession for young artists from under-represented communities, and our LPO Young Composers and Foyle Future Firsts schemes support the next generation of professional musicians, bridging the transition from education to professional careers.

2022/23 and beyond

We believe in the relevance of our music, and that our programmes must reflect the narratives of modern times. This season we’re exploring themes of belonging and displacement in our series ‘A place to call home’, delving into music by composers including Austrians Erich Korngold and Paul Hindemith, Hungarian Béla Bartók, Cuban Tania León, Ukrainian Victoria Vita Polevá and Syrian Kinan Azmeh. As we celebrate our 90th anniversary we perform works premiered by the Orchestra during its illustrious history. This season also marks Vaughan Williams’s 150th anniversary and we’ll be celebrating with four of his works, as well as both symphonies by Elgar and music by Tippett and Thomas Adès. Our commitment to everything new and creative includes premieres by Brett Dean and Heiner Goebbels, as well as new commissions from composers from around the world including Agata Zubel, Elena Langer and Vijay Iyer.

Pieter Schoeman Leader

Pieter Schoeman was appointed Leader of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008, having previously been Co-Leader since 2002. He is also a Professor of Violin at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance.

Pieter has performed worldwide as a soloist and recitalist in such famous halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Moscow’s Rachmaninov Hall, Capella Hall in St Petersburg, Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and London’s Royal Festival Hall. As a chamber musician he regularly appears at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall. His chamber music partners have included Anne-Sophie Mutter, Veronika Eberle, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Boris Garlitsky, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Martin Helmchen and Julia Fischer.

Pieter has performed numerous times as a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Highlights have included an appearance as both conductor and soloist in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at the Royal Festival Hall, the Brahms Double Concerto with Kristina Blaumane, and the Britten Double Concerto with Alexander Zemtsov, which was recorded and released on the LPO Label to great critical acclaim.

Pieter has appeared as Guest Leader with the BBC, Barcelona, Bordeaux, Lyon and Baltimore symphony orchestras; the Rotterdam and BBC Philharmonic orchestras; and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Vladimir Jurowski Conductor Emeritus, London

Philharmonic Orchestra

Vladimir Jurowski became the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Conductor Emeritus in September 2021, following 14 years as Principal Conductor, during which his creative energy and artistic rigour were central to the Orchestra’s success. At the BBC Proms concert with the LPO on 12 August 2021 – his final official concert as Principal Conductor – he received the Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, one of the highest international honours in music.

In September 2021 Vladimir became Music Director at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Since 2017 he has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. He is also Principal Artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and in 2021 stepped down from his decade as Artistic Director of the Russian State Academic Symphony Orchestra to become its Honorary Conductor. He has previously held the positions of First Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper, Berlin (1997–2001), Principal Guest Conductor of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (2000–03), Principal Guest Conductor of the Russian National Orchestra (2005–09), and Music Director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera (2001–13).

Vladimir enjoys close relationships with the world’s most distinguished artistic institutions, collaborating with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras, the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago and Boston symphony orchestras.

A committed operatic conductor, Vladimir’s recent highlights include semi-staged performances of Wagner’s Das Rheingold, Die Walküre and Siegfried with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall; new productions of Der Rosenkavalier, Shostakovich’s The Nose and Penderecki’s Die Teufel von Loudun at the Bavarian State Opera; Die Frau ohne Schatten in Berlin and Bucharest with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra; Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel at the Bavarian State Opera; Henze’s The Bassarids and Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron at the Komische Oper Berlin; his acclaimed debut at the Salzburg Festival with Wozzeck; and his first return to Glyndebourne as a guest conductor, for the world premiere production of Brett Dean’s Hamlet with the LPO. Previous seasons at Glyndebourne – many with the LPO – have included Die Zauberflöte, La Cenerentola, Otello, Macbeth, Falstaff, Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, Don Giovanni, The Rake’s Progress, The Cunning Little Vixen, Ariadne auf Naxos and Péter Eötvös’s Love and Other Demons

This season Vladimir returns to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducts new productions of Così fan tutte and Prokofiev’s War and Peace and a revival of Dean’s Hamlet at the Bavarian State Opera, and showcases a wealth of concert repertoire with the Berlin Radio Symphony and Bavarian State orchestras. He returns to the Royal Festival Hall in April 2023 for two concerts with the LPO – a programme of Ustvolskaya, Hindemith and Prokofiev with violinist Gil Shaham (19 April) and a programme of Telemann, Ravel, Ibert and Strauss (22 April) – followed by a third concert on 6 May which includes Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass with the London Philharmonic Choir.

The LPO has released a wide selection of Vladimir Jurowski’s live recordings with the Orchestra on its own label, including the complete symphonies of Brahms and Tchaikovsky; Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 1, 2, 4 & 8; and works by Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Strauss, Mozart, Vaughan Williams, Julian Anderson and Vladimir Martynov. In 2017 the Orchestra released a 7-CD box set of Jurowski’s LPO recordings in celebration of his 10th anniversary as Principal Conductor, and July this year saw the first of a three-volume Stravinsky series featuring The Rite of Spring and The Firebird (LPO-0123). The second volume is planned for release in spring 2023.

Gustav Mahler

1860–1911

Symphony No. 9 1908–11

Although the Ninth Symphony occupied Mahler intermittently between 1908 and 1911, he wrote most of the work in the summer of 1909, when he took his annual composing holiday in the Dolomites. Two years earlier, he had been prostrated by the death of his elder daughter at the age of four; since then, his own serious heart condition had been diagnosed, and he had had to modify his strenuous way of life. After many years of struggle, he had resigned as music director of the Vienna Opera; during 1908 he had been conducting at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; in the autumn of 1909 he was also to take up a new contract as conductor of the New York Philharmonic. The following summer, after his first New York season, he began sketching his Tenth Symphony, but that was to remain in draft form on his death in May 1911: so the Ninth was his last completed symphony. Its first performance took place in Vienna in June 1912, under the direction of Mahler’s younger colleague Bruno Walter.

The Symphony is scored for a large orchestra, especially numerous in the woodwind section (with a total of 20 players), but without any of the unusual extra instruments that had found a place in Mahler’s previous two symphonies. As in all his music, the scoring is fastidiously detailed; there are remarkably few tuttis (passages for the full orchestra), and there are some moments of extraordinary bareness, using the extreme high and low registers with nothing in the middle. The treatment of tonality is very free, with episodes firmly

rooted in a key alternating with episodes in which the key-centre shifts constantly, and with one of Mahler’s typical ‘progressive’ key-schemes, beginning in one key and ending in another.

As for the overall shape of the work, it is unconventional: a very long opening movement which fluctuates in tempo but is essentially slow; a central pair of scherzo like movements, the first in 3/4 dance rhythms and the second in duple time; and a long, slow finale. This outline has been compared to that of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’ Symphony of 1893. But there are also precedents for closing slow movements in Mahler’s own music, in the final Adagio of the Third Symphony, and in ‘Der Abschied’, the prolonged farewell to life that closes Mahler’s previous work before the Ninth, the songsymphony Das Lied von der Erde

The opening movement of the Ninth Symphony begins (at an ‘easy walking pace’) in the spare, bleak mood of ‘Der Abschied’, with a four-note harp motif and little rocking string figures ushering in a halting, sorrowing violin melody. This is followed shortly by the first appearance of the main contrasting idea, a more despairing melody in the minor key; this later returns in a more animated version, arriving at brass fanfares which mark the end of the opening section. The development begins with a syncopated rhythm in the horns which may suggest Mahler’s irregular heartbeat, and the return of the four-note motif. Rondo-like restatements of the first theme, in varied forms but in its original key, alternate with vehement episodes working up to two powerful climaxes. In the wake of the second of these, the faltering heart rhythm returns on strident trombones, and the harp ostinato also returns on timpani with the steady tread of a funeral march. This passage leads directly to a varied reprise of the main themes, followed by a coda which dies away to nothing.

This first movement frequently hints at a three-note descending horn-call figure borrowed from Beethoven’s piano sonata ‘Les Adieux’, in which it represents the word ‘Lebewohl’, (‘farewell’), addressed to a friend who was leaving Vienna. And a recurring variant of the first subject brings its melodic shape very close to that of a Viennese waltz by Johann Strauss the younger, called Freut euch des Lebens (‘Enjoy life’). These references suggest that Mahler was taking his leave, if not yet of life, then of the city that had played such a big part in his career. And this is all but confirmed by the two central movements. The second movement is a scherzo in the ‘easygoing’ Austrian dance rhythm of the Ländler, with two more volatile trio sections also in

the time of the Ländler or its city cousin, the waltz: the treatment is sometimes deadpan, sometimes affectionate, and sometimes deliberately banal. The Rondo-Burleske third movement is reliably reported to have been headed at one stage with a dedication ‘to my brothers in Apollo’, clearly meaning the fellow members of the musical profession who had made Mahler’s career in Vienna so uncomfortable. It is an exercise in rough-hewn, un-academic counterpoint on brusque, constantly evolving melodic motifs; towards the end, there is an extended episode of visionary calm, in D major, the key of the first movement, but this is gradually overcome by the earlier material, and the ending is savage.

The very slow finale is in D flat major, a semitone lower than the initial key. It has a warmly sustained, hymn-like main theme which is varied and developed on its two subsequent reappearances; these statements alternate with two subsidiary episodes in C sharp minor, the second of them beginning with an allusion to a gentle rocking figure from ‘Der Abschied’ and reaching a despairing climax. The hymn-like main melody not only incorporates the ‘Lebewohl’ motif but also gradually absorbs fragments from the bitterly parodistic RondoBurleske: a potent musical metaphor for a kind of psychological healing process, a reintegration of a damaged personality. And there is a further symbolic gesture in the coda, a high violin line which quotes from Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder (‘Songs on the Death of Children’), which he had written some years before the death of his daughter. This leads to an ending that is not disturbed but deeply peaceful – suggesting that the composer has won his way to a state of mind in which he can contemplate the frustrations and tragedies of his life, and even the inevitability of his own death, in a mood of calm acceptance.

In memory of Laurie Lovelle

1948–2022

Tonight’s concert is dedicated to the memory of Laurence (Laurie) Lovelle, who sadly died earlier this year, after retiring from the LPO in 2019 following 38 years as a much-loved member of the Double Bass section. Laurie is fondly remembered for the fun and humour he brought to those around him, as well as his fine musicianship.

Laurie studied at the Guildhall School of Music, where he met his future wife and life companion, Julia. He first played with the LPO under Bernard Haitink in 1971 before moving to the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon and later the Rotterdam Philharmonic. In 1981 he returned to the UK to join the LPO under Klaus Tennstedt, where he remained until his retirement.

Laurie’s colleague and friend, Principal Double Bass Kevin Rundell, recalls: ‘Laurie was a person who brought a wealth of experience to the LPO and who cared deeply for the music we play. He was kind, thoughtful and humorous. From the day I joined the Orchestra he was welcoming and supportive, and always prepared to let the section know when we were not playing correctly or sensitively. Outside the Orchestra, his life was rich and his interests wide. For many years he and Julia led groups trekking in Nepal, forming strong bonds with local people. At Glyndebourne during the long interval he could often be found guiding fellow orchestral members in Tai chi techniques. He was also an avid cinema-goer who never owned a television. After leaving the Orchestra he continued to spend many hours studying and playing the classical guitar. Laurie was a wonderful man with whom it was a pleasure and a privilege to make music.’

Tonight’s conductor Vladimir Jurowski, who was the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor during Laurie’s latter years with the LPO, also recalls him fondly:

‘I have such wonderful memories of Laurie – always so calm, positive and cheerful! We had long chats in London and during tours, often not about music but about Chinese Tai chi, a passion we shared – he even once gave me a Tai chi lesson, during a long weekend in Aldeburgh with the LPO strings in 2007. When he left the LPO in 2019, he gave me an old LP of Mahler 8 with the LSO, Bernstein and the Highgate School Boys’ Choir –Laurie was one of those Highgate choristers back then in the early 1960s, so it was particularly special. Laurie and I both shared a love of Mahler, and I am honoured to dedicate our concert tonight to his memory.’
