For No Tech Coding (JK - Grade 3)
Students will explore basic coding concepts through a no-tech approach by using Herve Tullet’s award winning picture book, “Press Here”. They will also explore patterning and use clearly worded descriptive vocabulary to create their own Press Here book as they circulate through a series of activity stations.
In this program, students will read and examine “If I Built a House” by Chris Van Dusen. Taking inspiration from the book’s main character Jack, students will use their creative minds and imagination to come up with a unique “dream house” of their own.

Ivan: the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla (Grades 4 - 6) Students will learn the real story behind the gorilla that inspired Katherine Applegate’s Newbery Medal-winning novel, “The One and Only Ivan”. Students will then investigate social and environmental issues, learn about their role as stewards and collaboratively design a media project advocating for animal rights. (Grades 4 - 6) Using Menena Cottin’s book, which invites readers to imagine the experience of living without sight, students will explore the importance of communication and how we communicate in non-verbal ways. (Grades 7 - 8) How can you tell what online sources are credible and useful for research? What questions do you need to ask yourself when looking at websites and articles online? Students will learn how to appraise a source using a list of objective criteria that will help them organize materials confidently and accurately before beginning their research. INTRODUCTION TO
3D PRINTING (Grades 7-8)
How does 3D printing work & what are its real-world applications? What are the potential impacts of this technology? Students will explore these questions, learn the basics of 3D printing and design an object that will have a positive impact on their classroom community. Program available at branch location only. WHEN SCHOOL’S OUT THE LABS ARE OPEN! www.lpl.ca/thelabs 519.661.4600 Located on the second floor of the Central Library, the Labs area is the central hub of our creative spaces. This space features hands-on access to electronics, textiles, robotics, and more. There are two sewing machines in this space, and our 3D printer is on display. All Labs users must have a signed waiver on file. Students 13+ years can sign their own waivers and those 12 and under can have it signed by their parent or guardian. The Labs will have a staff member available for help during Labs hours from September through June, Tuesday-Friday 3:30 -5 pm and Saturdays 2:30-4 pm. Check in before visiting - changes to Labs hours will be posted on the Labs section of the Library website.
THE STUDIO - This small-but-mighty room is designed especially for audio recording. It is sound-dampened and allows musicians and podcasters to record and edit their media. This room can be booked for up to two hours per day and accommodates up to four people.
CREATIVITY LAB - This room provides space and resources for digital creation and collaboration of all types. Work on individual or group projects, practice presentations, edit recordings from the Media Lab and Studio, and engage your digital creativity with coding and 3D designs. Book one of our iMacs or PCs in this space by contacting the Library, or bring your own laptop for collaborative work.
MEDIA LAB - Whether you are an avid photographer or videographer or in search of a green screen, this space features all the resources to support your creative side with a green screen wall, photography backdrops, and basic audio recording and lighting equipment. You will need to bring your own camera. This room can be booked for up to two hours per day.
The Library’s 3D printer is available for print jobs of up to two hours in length by submitting your files to the library. Check out the Labs page on the Library website for more information on submitting your files and the associated costs.

MEMORY LAB - Located in the London Room on the third floor, this self-serve workstation enables you to digitize your own personal documents, home videos, slide negatives, and audio cassettes. Please bring your own storage device to save your memories. This station is available on a first-come-first-served basis during regular library hours.

Our digital resources can also help teachers improve literacy, connect reading across curricular areas, teach reading and writing concepts and engage young readers.

A fun and interactive online language learning system with access to 10 languages including Arabic, French, and Spanish. This resource features videos and flashcards starring the Little Pim animal cast. For students in Pre-K - Gr. 2.
A collection of electronic books for students in Pre-K – Gr. 6. There are a variety of formats available, including animated talking Story Books and Read Alongs, Graphic Novels, NonFiction titles and National Geographic Videos, French texts, Math Stories, puzzles and more. This interactive collection is a valuable resource for either classroom or individual use.
A beginner’s database for reading and research geared towards grades K-3. Focusing on animals and science, this database is easy-to-navigate and offers read-along audio for each section as well as extension activities.
