London School of Hairdressing and Aesthetics was established in 1980 by Mandy Constable. Mandy was originally trained in the fashion district of London, England. Her decision to open a school in Vancouver was based, in part, on a realisation that there seemed to be a lack of quality training for potential hairdressers in the city. As a result, Mandy decided to sell her controlling interest in a successful Vancouver salon to open a new kind of hairdressing school. In its earliest years, London School offered only one program: full-time hairdressing. Since then, the school’s operations have expanded to include aesthetics and nail technology. In 1980, Mandy opened her doors on Hastings Street to six full-time hairdressing students. At that time, the school occupied approximately 1,500 square feet and Mandy was the Administrative Director and sole instructor. By 1983, the school had grown to the point that two other instructors were needed and Martin Constable joined Mandy as full-time Administrative Director of the school. Today, the school opens its doors to an average of one hundred students per year, employs six instructors, and occupies approximately 6,000 square feet of commercial space in the historic Lyric Theatre building on Pender Street in Vancouver.
