I had dreamed of studying psychology for many years and finally applied to LSBU in 2014; and I’m so glad I did. The course was so different to what I expected it to be, but different in a good way. From the moment I arrived I felt welcome, the lecturers treated me like a colleague rather than a student. The quality of the teaching is excellent and I have been able to gain a position as a research assistant to one of the lecturers in the School; this has given me great insight into the area I want to work in when I graduate. We also regularly have guest lecturers and psychology alumni coming in to us at the University to give us advice on how to succeed in the future. I’m so glad I chose LSBU; it has helped me realise my dream.

Edit Barnothe (Hungary) BSc (Hons) Psychology Edit is a member of the psychological society and hopes to pursue a career as a researcher in the cognitive field of psychology.

I’ve always been a keen photographer, and had really positive feedback about my work from a lot of my friends. As a result, I began looking for the best university to study a photography degree – and that’s what led me to LSBU. What I liked about the course was that it gave you the technical skills to succeed, along with the theory to back things up – but also gives you a real understanding of the commercial side of the industry as well. I’ve gathered a great group of friends and future colleagues around me that will help me with my plans for my future – and that’s one of the reasons why I can highly recommend LSBU to anyone considering a photography degree.

Lisa Drew (Germany) BA (Hons) Photography Lisa is Creative Director at South Bank Collective, a student-led photography agency that has been established by LSBU students and academics working together.

I really enjoy my course as it is very relevant to industry; it covers everything you need to know in order to become a quantity surveyor. All the lecturers have a great knowledge of the industry and are always willing to give you extra help if you need it. One of the things that I really like about the course is the International Real Estate class. As part of the class we get to travel to China and South Korea for 10 days to see how real estate markets differ in Asia compared to Europe. It really gives you a global perspective of the industry.

Vasile Oaida (Romania) MSc Quantity Surveying Vasile had previously worked in the construction industry in Romania and Germany before moving to London. He is now hoping to become a fully qualified quantity surveyor.

I’d recommend LSBU to anyone because of the great location, the great sports facilities and the standards of teaching. The marketing lecturers are really friendly and supportive, and the course is really creative. My course gave me the opportunity to do an internship within the LSBU marketing office. I was able to rotate between the various teams, allowing me to experience what it is like to work in areas like communications, public relations, events and market research. The variety of the internship was excellent and helped me figure out what I enjoy most.

Romans Altuhovs (Latvia) BA (Hons) Marketing A keen photographer, Romans has built his own photography business while studying at LSBU and credits his course with helping him turn his hobby into a commercial opportunity.

I’ve had the opportunity to learn and develop skills that will not only help me to succeed academically, but will also make me a better professional. The world needs engineering solutions from people like me, and I feel wellplaced to be able to deliver them thanks to the practical, focused nature of my degree. Living in London is an unforgettable experience. It is a mix of innovation and heritage, and I love that mixture. The multiculturalism of the city is incredible, and that too has taught me many things.

Imedouane Abdoullah (Belgium) BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering. As part of his studies, Imedouane broadened his horizons with a year’s placement at the University of Bremen, in Germany, as well as a six-month work placement in industry which is available as part of many courses at LSBU.

I consider myself very lucky to have managed to secure a place with what’s considered one of the best providers of midwifery education in London. Each and every one of the tutors who have been involved in my training has been competent, friendly and approachable but, most importantly, exceptionally dedicated to our learning.

Lisa Cecere (Italy) BSc (Hons) Midwifery Lisa was the winner of the Pampers Student Travel Award at the RCM Annual Midwifery Awards in 2014. She was also nominated for the Outstanding Student Midwife Award in the 2012/13 Cavell Nurses’ Trust Scholarship Awards.

All qualifying law degrees are regulated and accredited by the professional bodies for solicitors and barristers. In addition to this, the School’s planning and hospitality courses are all notable for their strong links with industry. The best thing about LSBU is the many opportunities it gives to you, be they social, professional or personal. Last summer I volunteered for two months at the Brent Law Community Centre, an opportunity I would never have had but for LSBU. In my second year I did a 14-week placement at the LSBU Legal Advice Clinic, which proved to be the most professionally valuable experience I’ve ever had. I’ve also been able to take Chinese language classes at the University, which has opened my eyes to a bigger world. LSBU has inspired me; I feel motivated like never before.

Zandagi Fedaie (The Netherlands) BSc (Hons) Law with Psychology Zandagi has been a member of the LSBU law society and a student ambassador during her time at LSBU.

Study abroad

Study abroad (inbound) Experience life as a student in London If you’re an undergraduate or a postgraduate student who would like to experience life as a student in London for a semester or a year, our Study Abroad Programme is for you. At LSBU, we offer course paths that build on and enhance your studies. You’ll study alongside our current students to ensure you get the most from this cultural, social and intercollegiate experience. Depending on your level and course of study, you’ll have the option to select modules that fit with your course or programme at your home university. Business students will also have the opportunity to combine their studies with advanced-level English language studies. Find out more details at: lsbu.ac.uk/eu-study-abroad

Why study abroad? Study abroad is all about adding value to your time as a student, and you’ll enjoy a truly dynamic, life-altering experience. You’ll travel and live in another country, interact with people

from different backgrounds and learn from a teaching body with a wealth of professional expertise. You’ll get to know yourself better, gain greater confidence in your decision-making processes and immerse yourself in a new culture, while enhancing your career prospects. Your studying won’t just happen in the classroom either. Living in the vibrant city of London will see you taking part in its multicultural events and visiting famous landmarks such as the London Eye, Buckingham Palace and St Paul’s Cathedral. Come to our campus community in the heart of London, only a 10-minute walk from the famous River Thames and the London Eye. Find out more about our location at: lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/location

Entry requirements Each EU country listed in the ‘Your country’ section of the website features individual country entry requirements. As a study abroad student, you’ll also need to meet the individual prerequisites for any module or modules you select to study. Find out more information at: lsbu.ac.uk/international/your-country

My course had the option of spending a semester abroad so I chose to go to Paris. LSBU were very supportive through the application process, allocating a host institution and making sure I was in safe hands when I arrived. I studied at a business school which had a fantastic reputation. The lecturers were highly experienced, personable and friendly and worked to achieve very high standards. During my time in Paris I built up a huge network of contacts while meeting professionals from the marketing industry; this was one of the biggest benefits to the exchange. I would highly recommend the Erasmus Programme to any eligible student. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my time at university and there is so much to gain!

Joe Fitzsimons (Ireland) Erasmus student Joe studied BA (Hons) Business Studies at LSBU and also worked as a student ambassador. The Student Ambassador Scheme gives students paid work opportunities during their studies. For more information, see page 50.

Opportunites abroad

Opportunities abroad International Exchange Programme

Make the most of your time at LSBU by taking advantage of the various opportunities abroad that many of our courses offer.

Our International Exchange Programme allows you to spend time studying at one of our partner institutions in Australia or the US for a semester, summer, or academic year of your degree programme without impacting the progress of your LSBU degree, or the fees you pay. For more details email studyabroad@lsbu.ac.uk

Erasmus+ Programme The Erasmus+ Programme gives you the chance to study part of your degree in a European partner university for one or two semesters. Or you can do a work placement in Europe for between 2 and 12 months. Students can access special Erasmus grants through the programme for both study or training.

China opportunities

The grant will help you cover the costs while you’re away and students from most courses can participate. It’s a fantastic opportunity to enhance your career prospects, develop relevant, marketable skills, travel Europe, learn a new language and make new friends, all while progressing your studies.

Through our award-winning Confucius Institute at LSBU, we support our students in learning Chinese language and culture. This knowledge is highly valued by employers and can be a real advantage if you’re aiming to be employed by a global firm. The Institute offers our students short courses and Chinese examinations. For eligible students, the Institute also offers a summer in China, internships and Chinese scholarships – these have benefited 50 students in the past year.

Enterprise at LSBU

LAST YEAR WE SUPPORTED JUST OVER 2,000 STUDENTS IN DEVELOPING AND ENHANCING THEIR ENTERPRISE SKILLS

Enterprise at LSBU Enterprise isn’t just about starting a business; it’s about developing skills essential for your career, whether you become an entrepreneur, a freelancer or get a job with a company. At LSBU, enterprise is a part of everything we do and we offer plenty of opportunities, many built into our courses. We support student enterprise through our Enterprise Centre (pictured above), which has the space and resources to support business start-ups. You’ll find our Student Entrepreneurship Support Service there – a one-stop shop for advice about starting up a business and keeping it going – available to you before and after graduating. We also organise enterprise internships, giving you the chance to get involved in the workings of a small start-up. If you have an idea you want to test, contact our Entrepreneurship in Action Scheme. You could receive £500 of funding, office space, mentoring, guidance and the chance to bid for further funding.

While studying at LSBU you’ll benefit from workshops, taster sessions, competitions, enterprise schemes and inspirational talks by visiting entrepreneurs, not to mention games, group challenges, market stalls, workshops, bootcamps and other events. These are organised by the Enterprise team, and student societies such as the South Bank Entrepreneurs, and the Schools themselves. It’s about recognising opportunities and seizing them, so developing your entrepreneurial skills and knowledge is important to us. Enterprise is for anyone who wants to succeed in their chosen career.

Graduate Entrepreneurship Scheme LSBU also offers a 12-month Graduate Entrepreneurship Scheme. The scheme is for ambitious graduates who are ready to start or grow their business or social enterprises. It provides funding up to £10,000, as well as office space and enterprise coaching and training. eustudent@lsbu.ac.uk  |  +44 (0)20 7815 6100 | 53
