(you’ll need Dennis around to get the details). Her commitment to service began early. Most notably, she was the first female student body president elected at Willamette University in Salem.
Feature Family
Both Hartmans are active volunteers. Both have served on the Lake Oswego Schools Foundation board and they contribute in many ways to their church, Lake Grove Presbyterian Church. Dennis currently serves on the Glenmorrie Water Co-op board. Liz has served on the Citizens Comprehensive Plan Committee and was the president of the Glenmorrie Neighborhood Association. She currently serves as board chair of the Lake Oswego School District.
All In with THE
Hartmans By Megan Wilcken
You could enjoy conversations with Liz and Dennis on many subjects, including Dennis’s love of fly fishing or Liz’s enjoyment of entertaining and their mutual love of the beauties of Lake Oswego’s parks. Walking their dog, Penny, in Foothills Park is a daily ritual. But it’s clear that Liz’s deepest passion is her work with the school board. Ask Liz about why education is so important, and she won’t spend much time talking about big numbers or accomplishments. She will tell you about the need to serve individual students. She doesn’t brush off the fact that LOSD was just ranked first in the nation, nor does she discount the district’s 90 percent graduation rate. Photo by Levi Sim Photography
But she is more interested in students who may slip through the cracks. “We’re finding each student that is struggling, and we’re working to help them,” Liz says. Recognizing that this effort relies on the commitment and involvement of all stakeholders, Liz praises the seamless way in which teachers, administrators, parents, volunteers, and local businesses work together to support students. Liz is confident in Lake Oswego’s ability to reach every student: “If there’s any community that can do it, this one can.”
“L
iz is 98% of this family!” Dennis exclaims, while Liz chuckles. It doesn’t take long to recognize that the Hartmans are a fun-loving and happy couple whose lives are filled to the brim with good and worthwhile things.
Dennis and Liz first met while Liz was working for a public relations firm at which Dennis was a client. Later, when neither of them was associated with the firm, they were both invited to a Christmas party in downtown Portland. They hit it off that night and now they’ve enjoyed 25 years of marriage. Their four children are spread across the U.S. in Alaska, Virginia, Arizona, and Oregon. That gives the Hartmans lots of great places to visit. Finding places they love to visit isn’t hard. Both have traveled extensively. And they have a list of destinations they look forward to experiencing. If you talk with Liz and Dennis about their travels, you’ll see that they don’t just visit a place, they really take it in. Because of his numerous trips to India while working as the vice president of Hyster Company, Dennis developed a great interest in the history and culture of the region. He now has a large collection of books on the subject, which he thoroughly enjoys reading. 6 | LO Neighbors – November 2015
Dennis and Liz know investing in education brings rewards now, and greater rewards later. As they attend block parties in their neighborhood, they see the faces of the students they are planning for. They know the names of the families that will benefit for years to come because of their investments today.
Liz’s daughter Elizabeth with their Miniature Pinscher Penny

Meanwhile, Liz movingly tells of her favorite destination: Washington, D.C. “It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been there, it still stirs great pride in me. It motivates me. As the seat of our nation’s government, history is everywhere you look and history is being made every day.” Liz and Dennis approach everything in life the same way they do their travels: they’re all-in. It’s tough to get Liz to tell you about her accomplishments over the years Submit content at BestVersionMedia.com
Looking ahead is a hallmark of everything Dennis and Liz do. They both eagerly seek out new things to learn and do. Dennis recently started raising orchids. “And they’re still alive!” he says, with a mix of pride and surprise. Liz admits that learning to play the drums would be great, though she’s not banking on that happening. Neither of them is content with previous accomplishments, even though they both have many to their credit. “Our greatest accomplishments are yet to come,” Liz says. “And, they are always a team effort.” November 2015 – LO Neighbors | 7

LO Schools
Congratulations LO Schools!

By Liz Hartman, Chair, Lake Oswego School District Board of Directors
It doesn’t hurt when a school district gets national recognition as #1 in the U.S. Lake Oswego School District recently got that recognition when MSNBC reported statistics from “StartClass,” an organization that compiles information from the U.S. Department of Education to compare states, districts, public and private schools as well as colleges and other educational resources (www.startclass.com). The Lake Oswego City Council issued a proclamation in October that commended the Lake Oswego School District, its administration, staff, students and parents for demonstrating excellence in education and for its many outstanding contributions to the Lake Oswego community. Each LOSD school scored 95 points or higher on the
Unforgettable Head Shots & Bespoke Business Photography
StartClass scale. The results of the combination of criteria resulted in three LOSD schools scoring 100, and an outstanding rating for the entire school district. Because Lake Oswego is in Oregon, it’s one of the few times you’ll see the state of Oregon ranked number one, because of the results of Lake Oswego’s school district. If you live in Lake Oswego, one subject most neighbors agree upon:

Education is important and the Lake Oswego School District delivers a great education. There are many ways to measure success in education. A highly educated community frequently equates to good schools. LO is one of Oregon’s most educated communities and lives up to the statistic as a community that watches what kind of education its students receive and the community has high expectations for a quality public education. Estimates of the LO population with post-high school degrees ranges from 60-83 percent depending upon each study’s criteria. Public and private high schools look forward to the annual posting of U.S. News and World Report rankings to see how well they fared under the criteria established by U.S. News and World Report. For high schools, the statistics include the number of students taking the Advanced Placement (AP) exam and scoring a 3 or above. Lake Oswego high schools are nearly always in the top 10 high schools for the state of Oregon.

Niche (https://k12.niche.com) recently ranked the LO School District in the top five in Oregon for teachers indicating that “students are very happy with the instruction they receive and education outcomes reflect the quality of instruction; the district is invested in its teachers and provides a good environment for teaching and learning and teachers are invested in the

the schools and the students and work to ensure the best outcomes for students.” Niche has many other data compilations for school districts across the U.S. Lake Oswego has been mentioned in a number of real estate studies as a great place to live, in part because of the quality schools. The city and district have also been recognized in studies by Schooldigger and CityData. When it comes to data, this school district continues to progress and analyze what is important to deliver a great education for students. Whatever the criteria, the Lake Oswego School District reflects the values of the community, the leadership of the administration, outstanding teachers and excellent support staff. Parents in this community participate by volunteering in classrooms and raising funds. They are aware of the
outcomes for their students. The Lake Oswego Schools Foundation is one of the strongest school foundations in the state of Oregon.

As the district plans for the future, leadership from the superintendent and school board are pleased with the district’s past work and the recognition the district has had.

Today’s leaders are looking to the next steps on what success looks like for this district and for all students in the district. What is important to the community, to parents and to tomorrow’s employers are all part of the equation on what success means to Lake Oswego’s next generation of students. As the District reflects on past successes and the criteria that define that success, it will continue to define what the community considers successful for its students.

Restaurateur of the Year
Village Award
By Megan Wilcken
F
or years, Dave Burnett drove by the Chili’s restaurant on Kruse Way and admired its location and the aesthetics of the building. Dave was no stranger to the restaurant business; he was working at the time as a District Manager for Bob Farrell, of Pacific Coast Restaurants (Stanfords, Manzana, and others). Dave knew that owning his own restaurant was a lofty goal, but he also believed, given the chance, he could pull it off. When that opportunity came in 2009, it was a leap of faith to invest everything he had. He and his wife Christie, who were high school sweethearts and have now been married for 36 years, decided they were willing to take that leap. And the investment was well worth it. Now with three restaurants (two Oswego Grill locations, one in LO, the other in Wilsonville and Copper River Restaurant and Bar in Hillsboro), it’s clear that Dave has all the right ingredients for a successful restaurant. One of those ingredients is a high standard of customer service, for every single diner. It’s just how they
do things at Oswego Grill. Dave explains his approach to customer service: “The answer is yes, what’s the question?” Putting customers first isn’t just a policy for Dave and his team, it’s their one and only service philosophy. Diners can feel the difference, and the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association (ORLA) noticed it as well. On Sunday, Oct. 4, at their annual convention, ORLA recognized Dave as their Restaurateur of the Year. He had his wife and their four children with him to celebrate this honor, along with his partners and others he credits with helping him accomplish so much in his business endeavors. “There are no awards without a great team,” Dave asserts, demonstrating another philosophy that sets him apart. A lot of Lake Oswego residents have enjoyed the complimentary banana split offered at Oswego Grill on birthdays and other special occasions. But do you know the story behind the dessert? It has a name: the Bob
David & Christie Burnett at ORLA award ceremony in October 2015.
Banana Split
Farrell Banana Split. It’s named after Dave’s mentor and friend, the founder of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour Restaurants. The name honors Bob Farrell’s exceptional contribution to the industry and to Dave’s personal growth as a restaurateur. Looking back on those days when he drove past the site that would become Oswego Grill, Dave feels a sense of awe and gratitude: “I never, in my wildest dreams, would have asked for all this.”

LO STYLE
~Awesome Accessories...and More~
By Sherry Dorn (See page 4 for bio.)
When the seasons shift, it can mean several things; that pumpkin spice lattes are now available, or it’s time to liberate your senses and indulge in winter fresh accessories! We call them our cool weather friends, because they are artful, cozy, effortless and absolutely essential to our wardrobes! Much like the delicious foam on the latte, or the hot fudge on a sundae (all things you can’t live without), accessories totally make our outfits complete. Here’s the easy part; it’s as simple as changing your look with the perfect off-beat necklace. Consider wearing an intricate party pave’, in an explosion of multi-colored crystals for a polished retro look, or slip easily into bold silver links with black accents, that make your wardrobe work for all occasions. Think of choosing a “tailored to perfection” tote handbag or a soft cream satchel, even a sassy red patent bag with a modern twist (teeny and table-top) or a glamorous sequined crystal mini-bag, that is so super-chic. It seems as women, we always stuff our handbags with too much stuff, (for emergencies…you know…just in case!) Consequently, we need a break from hauling everything around on one shoulder. Try paring down and unloading, not only will your shoulder say “Thank You”, but your street-smart style is allowed to shine. Enjoy being a modern woman and gift yourself with the genuine richness of a delicious, hand-made hoody-scarf and matched vest, in a faux fur neutral palette. Rich, warm and comfy, all-in-one. Pair with jeans, jumpsuits and dresses, there’s nothing quite as smart and cuddly. Keep dreaming…go ahead and imagine yourself in a long, sleek, leopard faux fur coat. When you are wearing one of these, you totally relax, snuggle up and enjoy being fabulous! Ask Angelina Jolie; they make the cold a little cozier!
Accessories from the Heart:
Create & layer with smart and versatile pieces from “Sympli” 1. Black cropped smock with scoop neck $123 2. White long sleeve top $90 3. Black leggings $84 4. Silver and black link necklace $93 and Hammered earrings $38 Escape from Paris 5. Silver bracelets with harlequin, link pattern $166 and $146. Bernard Bouhnik 6. Stacked coils: $3 each 7. Handbag: “Pop of red”, Bucket bag in patent leather $71 Pia Rossini
One of this winter’s best trends is to create a wardrobe from simple, tailored, wearable pieces in black and white. I wore my classic pieces so often last year, I had separation anxiety by the time spring arrived! Try layering long sleeved tops under cropped tanks, with leggings, and under a dress for a picture perfect look. For whatever the day brings, these pieces are super mixable and wearable and are taken to a whole new level with the perfect accessories. 12 | LO Neighbors – November 2015

Cause for Awareness
A Day to Give
By Megan Wilcken
In the wee hours of Friday morning, likely still feeling the lingering effects of the food hangover resulting from Thanksgiving feasts, thousands of people drag themselves from their beds to take advantage of enticing Black Friday sales. Not to be outdone by their “brick-and-mortar” competitors, online businesses and shopping sites offer Cyber Monday, chock full of specials and one-day-only deals. According to the National Retail Foundation, nearly 80 percent of adults in the U.S. took advantage of Thanksgiving weekend shopping in 2014. They also report 2014 Black Friday sales in the billions and Cyber Monday sales in the millions. On average, retailers make 20-40 percent of their annual revenue on Black Friday alone.
In 2012, a new day hit the holiday scene: Giving Tuesday. The 92nd Street Y (a cultural center in New York City) and the United Nations Foundation started Giving Tuesday as a response to the increasing commercialization and consumerism of the postThanksgiving season. These social entrepreneurs decided it was time to create a day that invites everyone to connect with others, give back to their communities, and affect change locally or around the world. GivingTuesday occurs annually the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, it is on December 1st. While some in the nonprofit sector are skeptical, most see Giving Tuesday as a positive opportunity to raise
awareness of local and global needs. And for those who feel that holidays in the US have become little more than a consumer frenzy, it provides an easy way to refocus individuals, families, and community groups on things that matter most. The founders of Giving Tuesday encourage organizations and individuals to launch campaigns each year, and they provide a full set of tools and tips to help those who choose to get involved. To date, over 30,000 organizations (nonprofits, civic groups, etc.) have engaged in Giving Tuesday campaigns. Some campaigns focus on raising funds for a cause, others encourage the donation of time, talents, or other resources. Every kind of giving is encouraged. You can visit givingtuesday.org to learn more about it and to find ways to get involved.
You can visit givingtuesday.org to learn more about it and to find ways to get involved.
You don’t have to join a Giving Tuesday campaign to tap
into the purpose behind the movement. There are so many ways to give during the holiday season. Local food banks (find one at: foodpantries.org) welcome holiday donations and volunteering and/or donating to Meals on Wheels is always a good idea. The City of Lake Oswego posts a broad range of volunteer opportunities on its website, or you can visit volunteermatch.org and search for opportunities in Lake Oswego.
As you look ahead to your holiday feasts and festivities, make sure giving back is on the menu.

Finance
Finishing 2015 Financially Strong
By Trevor Hammond, See Bio on page 4.
We are in the fourth quarter!
In less than two short months we will be welcoming in 2016 and setting those ever popular New Year’s Resolutions. For many people, money is at the heart of these annual goals, since many goals involve either spending money, saving money, or paying down debt. Every 90 days I build a plan around accomplishing THE #1 thing that will have the greatest impact on my business, money, or personal life. By breaking down my year into four quarters, and accomplishing one big priority each quarter, I enjoy greater focus and clarity around what is most important.
Activity or habit might be, “Pay an extra $500 per month toward the Visa.” The second key activity might be “Limiting weekly grocery budget to $300.” This activity would free up more money to pay down the Visa or car loan. 5. Finally, what will your REWARD be if you accomplish all of this?
While thinking about your financial goals, what needs to happen for you to be happy with your final couple of months of 2015? What money goals did you set ten months ago that have yet to be checked off? More importantly, what must you do to create massive momentum to ensure 2016 goes down in the books as the best year of your life? While you don’t quite have 90 days remaining, here is the simple 90-day planning process you can still use now to improve your personal finances by year-end:
1. Determine the TOP 5 money goals you would love to accomplish by the end of the year. These might include, “Increase Savings,” “Pay Down Debt,” or “Purchase a New Car.” They don’t have to be completely specific yet, since the rest of this process helps you do that. 2. Once you have identified the TOP 5, which is your #1?
Depending on your goals and financial situation, set a fun and realistic reward for yourself and your family. This might be anything from a weekend at the coast to a new iPad, or even a Spring Break trip to Hawaii with the money freed up from no debt!
We love hearing your success stories and questions as they relate to money and achieving a bigger, better financial future for you and your family. Please call or email if I can help in any way!
What this means is, what is the ONE GOAL on your list that if accomplished by 12/31/15, would have the greatest impact on your money or life? Typically when you look at the five goals you have listed, one trumps the rest. Often there is one goal that, if accomplished, makes the others on your list either easier or no longer necessary. For example, if you were to “Increase Savings,” you’d then have more money to purchase a new car, or start a college savings account for your child.

3. With your #1 Money Goal set for Q4, what are the two Ideal Results that you will use to measure whether you succeed or not?
Ph: 503-496-5500 Email: info@draneaslaw.com
What must happen by the end of the year for you feel successful around this goal? You should have a number attached to each Ideal Result. For example, if your #1 Money Goal is “Pay Down Debt,” then an Ideal Result might be, “Zero balance on the Visa”. Your second might be: “Only $5,000 left on auto loan.” Remember, these are the results you want to see by 12/31/2015. You get two, and with a number associated to each it is easier to measure your success and build a plan to achieve them.

Live Life & Travel By Cindy Passannante, See Bio on page 4.

ife is a journey, and Cindy Passannante feels that travel is one of the best ways to experience the journey. With this in mind the concept of CP Trips, a travel business, was born over thirty years ago. But there is more to travel than just the journey. Planning, understanding the small details and navigating through those details can make all the difference in your experience. Exploring each new destination, and learning about the culture, history and natural landscapes unique to each location, has kept this profession exciting and interesting throughout the years. In the beginning of her career the focus was on airline tickets, and Cindy became proficient in researching and issuing not only tickets, but also complete travel packages. With the digital age things changed and suddenly anyone could book a flight, a hotel or plan their own vacation. But this didn’t mean the end of the Travel Professional. Cindy redesigned her business to fit the needs of her customers who wanted more from their vacation than a hotel or flight. With the internet, travel options became so vast it was easy to become overwhelmed, and travelers soon returned to the professional to help sort through the many options available. As a Travel Professional, Cindy has learned how to ask the right questions, including ones clients may not think of. Experience and expertise shine and are the backbone of the value that she and her team bring to the services provided by CP Trips. Taking the time to listen and understand the desires of those seeking a vacation experience is key to helping clients realize their travel dreams. Planning and organizing travel is like solving a puzzle, another of Cindy’s favorite pastimes. Some challenges have presented themselves such as an Around the World honeymoon with what seemed to be a reasonable budget and timeframe to the couple, until Cindy started the process of coordinating the
logistics of the trip. The dream was to begin with a grand safari in Africa, an adventure in Asia, and ski trip in Europe within a three month widow, for approximately $30,000. In reality, by creating a circular trip which started in Japan, using local Ryokan style accommodations, then moving on to a simplified safari in Africa and ending in Europe with local B&Bs, including Christmas in the Swiss Alps, the trip was made possible within their parameters. Another challenge often presented is multi-generational family travel. Having enjoyed many trips with children and grandchildren, Cindy and the team understand the lifetime memories these adventures can create. The importance of keeping the family together while offering diverse activities for all ages, calls for the travel professional who can sort the details of an ideal family vacation for everyone. This type of travel has become very popular with cruise companies and guided tour businesses, which are now offering a variety of multi-generational vacation packages. The team at CP Trips are experienced in working with these companies enabling them to find the right fit for the family as a whole. Life is a journey, now is a great time to experience it through travel. It is helping others achieve their travel dreams and adventures around the world that Cindy and her team enjoy best. They have an endless supply of stories to share from their own journeys and are ready to help others create their own travel stories; this is the biggest payoff in the end. Call or email Cindy Passannante at 503-658-5646 – cptrips@aol.com; or Kari Paulson at 503-720-0116 – KariPDX@aol.com. For a small fee, we can help you plan your next vacation. Home Makeover
Lighting for Today’s Home
By: Anne Ashley
Today there is a new solution that continues to improve and evolve the lighting industry. It is called LED which is short for Light Emitting Diode. Initially the light that was generated was very blue and not the warm color we are familiar and comfortable with, especially in our homes. As LED’s continue to improve the colors also got better and the light generated is more controlled and consistent. The advantage of an LED bulb or light fixture is easily described as a very long life and very small energy consumption. If the light desired is the amount generated by a 60 watt bulb, the compact fluorescent will use about 14 watts and the LED will use approximately 10 watts. The savings over years is substantial. The other advantage is the life of the bulb. The standard incandescent bulb will provide approximately 1200 hours of life. The CFL is good for approximately 10,000 hours and the LED life expectancy is approximately 50,000 hours. This number is also ever evolving as improvements continue. In a place of business there is an additional savings of fewer man hours used to change light bulbs. Going back to the discussion on design and finish, LED fixtures open up new design options that are sleek and compact while providing ample light. Dimming capabilities have improved. Light that is soft and warm or cool and bright are included in today’s LED light options. If the fixture desired is not LED, there is a wide assortment of bulbs to replace the current incandescent or compact fluorescent bulb.

Changes in the lighting industry have moved beyond the basics of design and finish. Instead of being able to talk about watts, we are now talking lumens. The reality is that lumens have always been a measurement, but they were not the common measurement we all became familiar with. The introduction of the Compact Fluorescent Bulbs known as CFL’s were a great step towards more efficient lighting but they brought their own unique issues because of the amount of lead used in manufacturing and disposing them.
