MY ATALANTA

David Wightman is well known for his colourful landscape paintings of imaginary mountains and lakes. Using humble wallpaper for texture, Wightman collages the surfaces of his paintings using a technique similar to marquetry. Wightman has developed a unique colour palette of contrasting hues and calming greys to create depth and intensity in his work. Each painting is meticulously collaged, crafted, and painted over a period of several weeks. His fictional landscapes pay homage to earlier landscape painters while remaining utterly unique and personal. Wightman describes his fictional mountainscapes as “idealised and impossible”. Colour, composition, and collage are the key aspects of his work. My Atalanta is Wightman’s second solo exhibition with Long & Ryle and features over a dozen new artworks including paintings, prints, and drawings.
