THE LIGHT OF THE DAY 2024 Oil on canvas 46 × 39 cm.

Long and Ryle held my first show in London a long time ago. They exhibited my early paintings of the English countryside, which had made such an impression on me when I first arrived from Barcelona, to take up a residency at Delfina Studios. This was the beginning of a long journey together over thirty years; a journey that still continues. Years of intense work with many exhibitions and art fairs; always showing new and fresh works from my studio. During that time a relationship of trust and friendship has evolved with the gallery, which has given me a precious stability allowing me to develop my work without restraint.

Many times, I have had the pleasure of working for exhibitions on specific themes, such as ‘The Miracle of the Birds’, ‘A Night at the Opera’, and ‘Dreams in the Garden’. The latest of them was ‘Sweet Passions’, which as the title suggests was dedicated to the human passions; every painting featuring a different passion. This was my last one-person exhibition with Long and Ryle. Working on these kinds of thematic collections pleases and amuses me, but at the same time forces me to work somewhat constrained by a very specific subject matter.

This is different in the case of the current exhibition. I have painted it, without an idea already formed in my mind. ‘In the Lightness of the Days’ I let my soul fly; I let it go freely to choose what it pleases at each moment. ‘The Lightness of the Days’ refers to the light that illuminates the days. It refers to an abstract and allegorical light. It is the light that comes from new ideas. It also refers to the days lit by sparks of light that comes from these newly arrived ideas, fresh and full of vitality but also with the uncertainty of things yet unknown.

The Lightness of the Days

Enter the fantastical paintings of Catalan artist Ramiro Fernandez Saus. An enchanting world where animals have human qualities – dogs gaze adoringly, a tiger lounges on a sofa, a monkey perches on a tree beside a bird and a butterfly. The viewer cannot help but be beguiled. Ramiro’s thick impasto technique has an appealing sense of colour that could illuminate magical realist stories. Paintings of that genre can have an empty, eerie, surreal, dark feel. Ramiro’s paintings are full of life, maybe mysterious but in a charming way. There is a metaphysical underpinning in Ramiro’s work to what on the surface seems to be an attractive, innocent, and naive representation, a folk tale that draws us in, curiouser and curiouser.

The Lightness of the Days will be Ramiro’s ninth exhibition with Long & Ryle. The word ‘lightness’ in the title, he says, refers to the light that comes from new ideas flowing over days:

I used to work methodically; I was always looking for solutions. This time I have given myself complete freedom over subject matter. I tried to put myself into a contemplative state of mind that does not seek but patiently waits for ideas to come in a natural way, without being forced.

7

The Lightness of the Days is about memories and reflections on things personal to Ramiro, images that he has kept in his head for years. Ramiro has always lived in Sabadell, a town near Barcelona, which he describes as the Manchester of Spain. His family owned a textile factory where his father and grandfather worked. He started painting abstract works and later he began painting figuratively, finding he needed to explain life in a different language. Over the decades he has stored, like a magpie, a cornucopia of ideas derived from an assortment of sources ranging from naïve paintings, South American literature and his collection of antique textiles.

There are evocations of Ramiro’s life in My Room by the Sea – an amalgamation of times during his childhood spent by the sea. He explains that he would never paint an empty interior:

I like to imagine myself living in the room, it’s more interesting to represent myself in the painting as a dog or a tiger rather than as a man.

Ramiro loves ancient Indian and Persian depictions of creatures and is intrigued by how Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges featured tigers in his books. He admires the work of the eighteenth-century Afro-Peruvian portrait painter José Gil de Castro: ‘My animals are not imbued with meanings from mythology. They are poetic representations without a logical explanation but they are essentially good’, he smiles, ‘I don’t plan and control a story, its more about

8

the composition and relationship with the elements in the paintings’.

His pictures are moments in frozen time, there is an air of stillness and silence but at the same time so much is going on: people climbing ladders, dogs leaping, birds circling and workers constructing a boat. The paintings Montferri and Birds Flying in Vila-rodona show a typical European town, painted in a twentiethcentury cubist style in its geometry of interlocking planes but underpinning the structural reality birds fly along the wall of a church and draw you in evoking a spirituality beyond the material form. Ramiro calls the flying birds, ‘angels or souls of the sky’. His travels in the English countryside inspired his early paintings and his interest in the work of Gainsborough and Hogarth. He is also interested in the work of Watteau and Henri Rousseau. The flower paintings, Flower I, II and III, have a feel of eighteenthcentury embroidery in their flat blocks of colour.

There seems to be a sense of a journey in Ramiro’s paintings. Life can be an uphill struggle and there are uncertain waters to be negotiated; but that is all part of life and in the end, we will achieve a state of contentment away from all the cares of the world. Ramiro illustrates this in a series of paintings of clouds and cyclists: Cycling Through the Clouds and Cycling with the Birds. Ramiro commented, ‘I grappled with how to portray a cyclist’. In A Morning Sailing the sailor negotiates choppy water. Ramiro is a

9

keen sailor. Self Portrait has a young artist in his swimming shorts, easel in hand on a cloud but Ramiro insists the picture is not of him but an archetype. There can be a mountain to climb in The Light of the Day Reaching for the sky is a woman at the top of a tree, arms outstretched heavenward watched by a dog at the bottom of the ladder in Theresa and the Moon, a semi-religious event. There is something too of the early Italian Renaissance. Ramiro loves the work of Giotto: ‘Clouds are inhabited by saints and angels’ he laughs.

In the variety of paintings on show Ramiro combines nostalgia with a sense of optimism about the future. We are drawn in slowly without really realising it. There is a calmness in the naivety but we are intrigued by details such as letters of the alphabet in the thick clouds. We wonder what the relationships between man and beasts represent. They seem harmonious and it would be quite fun to be in one of Ramiro’s pictures. But, of course, a work of art should not necessarily tell us everything, and we can’t help but wonder and look for meanings. The fun is speculating for ourselves.
