SOMEHOW WE’VE COME TO BELIEVE THAT GREATNESS IS ONLY FOR THE CHOOSEN FEW, FOR THE SUPERSTARS. THE TRUTH IS, GREATNESS IS FOR US ALL. THIS IS NOT ABOUT LOWERING EXPECTATIONS; IT’S ABOUT RAISING THEM FOR EVERY LAST ONE OF US. GREATNESS IS NOT IN ONE SPECIAL PLACE, AND IT’S NOT IN ONE SPECIAL PERSON. GREATNESS IS WHEREVER SOMEBODY IS TRYING TO FIND IT.

OUR HISTORY A LOOK BACK AT THE LEGACY OF AIR MANUFACTURING INNOVATION
1968 Tetra Plastics, started in 1964, opens a new plant in Chesterfield, Missouri. Innovation & manufacturing capabilities rapidly expand, impacting everything from nuclear power plant construction to the cross-bar in the Hi-flier kite, keeping the toy in the air.
1972 Tetra becomes the first U.S. company to successfully develop & manufacture critical components for snow and water skis. The beloved Action sports industry is no longer dependent on European suppliers.

1979 TAILWIND Debuting to retail in 1979, the Tailwind was the first shoe to ever use Air technology – the result of a maverick team working in Building 108, Nike’s manufacturing facility in Saco, Maine. Though a success with runners, the Air sole was encased in foam, drawing skepticism from some athletes because they could not see the Air.

1987 AIR MAX 1
Te t r a begins working with Nike to develop a proprietary extrusion process and what will become the Nike Air sole cushioning system.
The brainchild of a renowned team of designers & engineers, this was the first shoe that made air visible. Incoporated with unprecedented comfort and striking colorways, the Nike Air Max 1 continues to capture the attention of athletes and collectors alike.

Tetra adds another proprietary innovation to the arsenal. Blow-molding allows the Air system to be totally visible in the heel and creates maximum cushioning. Tetra is purchased by Nike, ensuring its role as the sole supplier of Air sole cushioning materials to Nike worldwide.

Blow-molding is debuted in the Air Max 93. It is a significant step forward in the pursuit of a foamless shoe, and a testament to the drive of the Tetra team whose plant was shut down by a devastating flood in the same year. Symbolizing the shoe that boasted the first fully-visible air wedge, the Air Max 93 is heralded as the cornerstone of visible Air, setting new standards of cushioning.
1995 1995 marked a new era for Air technology. Nike had figured out how to integrate visible Air in the forefoot, and drawing inspiration from geology and Oregon’s muddy running trails, took a hard departure from historic designs. A black midsole — the first in Nike shoes — were devised to hide dirt. The striated, dark colorways of the Air Max 95 were subtly accented with fluorescent yellow elements, a nod to Nike’s track heritage, and complemented by a small Swoosh on the heel cup.

1996 AIR ZOOM ALPHA By 1996, Air had captured the imagination of athletes worldwide, and runners in particular. Nike Air MI innovators continued to surprise. Leveraging tensile technology, the Air Zoom Alpha was a low-profile wonder for runners. The technology allowed the sole to recharge with each stride. Four, anatomically positioned pods resulted in maximal running efficiency, and laid the foundation for decades of running innovation.

The Air Max 97 made it clear that the Air revolution was far from over. With nods to a silver bullet train and ripple created from a drop of water into a pond, the 97 pushed the boundaries of design with silver reflective piping, amplified by light. Paired with a hidden lacing system and the first one-piece Air sole, this sneaker checks all the boxes of an icon.
1998 Tetra Plastics officially becomes Nike IHM, Inc., a subsidiary of NIKE, Inc.
AIR MAX PLUS This unique addition to the Air Max dynasty defined the era in which it debuted as well as those that followed. The ultimate accolade for the Air Max Plus was an unofficial rebrand — in some territories it’s better known by the two letters, “Tn,” that represent the Tuned Air it debuted — and the moniker is now standard issue at street level.
2006 AIR MAX 360 A foamless shoe had been the moonshot for Nike since its inception. Nearly 20 years after the first Air Max, intention became reality with Caged Air technology. The Air Max 360 was a nod to the team’s historic designs, while the foamless sole ensured unimagined performance.

2016 Nike In-House Manufacturing (IHM) is rebranded Nike Air Manufacturing Innovation (Air MI).
2017
The Air MI location in Oregon celebrates facility expansion, taking up residence in the Tailwind building, named after the historic shoe. Oregon Governor Kate Brown marks the occasion by proclaiming October 6 as Manufacturing Day in the state.
WE GO BEYOND AIR TO PRODUCE INDUSTRY LEADING COMPONENTS FOR FORWARD-THINKING GLOBAL PARTNERS.
AIR VAPORMAX Dreams of running only on air materialized in the form of the VaporMax. An eight-year endeavor, this shoe was a feat of engineering and innovation. To achieve the seamless, nearweightless form, 39,000 parts were orchestrated, including the new, highly efficient air bag attached directly to the Flyknit upper using intricate Flywire technologies. No glue, no midsole, no sock liner – just stunning design and the sensation of clouds underfoot.
2018 AIX MAX 270 The Air Max 270 is Nike’s first Air shoe built specifically for lifestyle wear. Drawing on the DNA of the 180 and 93, the 270 pairs the future-forward zonal-mesh upper with a 32-mm heel Air sole. The smooth lines and cushioned ride have won over the likes of Kevin Durant, setting the bar high for future innovations.
WE’VE PUSHED THE LIMITS OF POSSIBILITY SINCE 1979 AND ARE NOWHERE NEAR FINISHED.
