Community Newsletter of the Long Beach Symphony
SPRING 2017, Vol. 1 | No. 4
Summary of a Great Year by Kelly Lucera This June, the Long Beach Symphony Association wraps up a very exciting 82nd season and I can’t believe how quickly it has gone by! This season marked our announcement of Eckart Preu as our Music Director. To herald in the news, we began the season announcing Eckart’s appointment to a large crowd of Long Beach residents at the Boathouse Restaurant. We were thrilled to have Mayor Robert Garcia attend, as well as many City Council Members, our Board members, and others from the community to show the City’s support. Eckart brought his family with him, including his lovely wife, Neeley and his two adorable young daughters. They lived for a week right by the beach for a week and enjoyed the Long Beach summer days playing in the water, visiting the Aquarium and getting to know our beautiful city. With Eckart lined up for the following season, we enjoyed 11 concerts that were exciting, well attended, and always beautiful. One of my favorites, and one which received so many compliments was our Opening Night, which featured a tuba solo by Doug Tornquist. Audience members were surprised at the intricacies and subtleties that were conveyed by that fabulous instrument. In December, our Broadway Holiday concert featuring Saturday Night Live alumna, Ana Gasteyer, who wowed audiences and showcased her fabulous charisma, humor and vocal chops. We even got the Arena to snow and we all felt warm in the holiday spirit! Eckart returned in February to lead four free educational concerts for over 12,000 4th and 5th graders with a wonderful turn-out of Ovation! volunteers who made sure these programs ran smoothly. In the Spring, we were absolutely thrilled to receive news that Toyota Motor Sales, USA decided to fund these concerts for students for the next five years! This wonderful gift of support is a testament to the relationship we have sustained with the company through our Board member, Irv Miller, and our staff. We also threw a record-breaking Gala this season at the recently renovated, Ebell Club of Long Beach. Raising over $347,000 for our Symphony programs, this beautiful event was the talk of the town. Over 20 Ovation! volunteers were on hand helping to support the gala. Their hard work made this event such a success. There have been so many wonderful highlights of this season, including over 150 free programs at our local schools, concerts that delighted, and memories to last. I want to thank each and every Ovation! member for their support, their hard work, and their love for this Symphony. On behalf of myself and the staff, we can’t wait to begin our 83rd season and to celebrate with you, Eckart’s Era! Fondly,
Kelly Lucera Executive Director Long Beach Symphony

When I read some of the activities that Issy Roberts is planning for our Instrument Petting Zoo, a name came up several times, “Willmore City Heritage Association” and I thought it would be interesting to look into this group a bit more: It is the 1st Designated Historic District of Long Beach and sits on land first developed in the late19th century by William E. Willmore. It contains the site of the original township of Willmore City. The Heritage Association is committed to the preservation, protection and improvement of the Willmore City/Drake Park neighborhood and is home to some of Long Beach’s oldest homes and most congenial people in the city. They especially care about their community and the children. It is located on the west side of Long Beach, bordering the 710 freeway on the west, 4th St on the south, Anaheim St to the north and Pacific Ave to the east. Several homes were successfully relocated from The World Trade Center Development to the Willmore/Drake Park area. Others have been saved and moved into the area from the West Gateway Redevelopment project. The Association has received many grants for the betterment of the neighborhood with street signs showing the historic district designation. Long Beach Symphony has been active with the Willmore City Heritage Association now for more than 3 years having taken our Instrument Petting Zoo to their “Winter in Willmore Festival”. The festival is well attended with a variety of activities including several tons of snow that are shipped in from the local mountains. Our Instrument Petting Zoo is very popular among both the parents and the children!

The President of the Association, Kathleen Irvine, is very excited to bring music to the area and the Symphony is in the process of planning a concert in July with Alex Iles under the Willmore City Association “Summer of Live Arts and Music” series. This concert is fully funded by the Association. Please support our outreach activities!

Meet Your Ovation! Board by Renee B. Simon Ovation membership offers lots of good things: helping the Symphony, of course; meeting new friends; introducing kids to the petting zoo; but an absolute favorite are the Ovation! Occasion luncheons and programs which only happen with many hours of planning and organizing. Fortunately for Ovation!, among the three-member Ovation! Occasion team is Vickie Sawtelle, recent to our board and a whiz at organizing. Now retired, Vickie had worked in the field of the environment for 35 years and since 1987 as office manager for Farghee, Inc., a small environmental consulting firm where she handled resources, payroll, invoices, accounting and whatever with the help of assorted modern software. It was her long-time friend Peggy Lymburner who encouraged her to join Ovation!. In her childhood home, as in her home today, music is ever present. Her mother was a fan of light opera but her dad favored country western and Vickie supports an interesting theory that finds a close relationship between early Rock and Roll and the classical fare she hears on KUSC, a station always on in her home. Be sure to ask her about that. She and her husband nurture two “adorable” Cavalier breed dogs that she describes as big dogs in small bodies. That makes them about the right size for living on the Naples canal in the house the Sawtelles built in the early 1990s. Vickie enjoys snow skiing with a group of women friends at Mammoth where her season pass provides many days of downhill joy. But here in town, she is happy volunteering in the Symphony office and particularly escorting the youngsters during the Concerts for Young People week.
About Ovation! The mission of this organization shall be to support the programs, policies and goals of the Long Beach Symphony through the coordination and facilitation of volunteer activities.
Ovation! New Member Meet and Greet On April 6, Ovation! members Don and Judy Boland hosted a Meet and Greet for Ovation! members and Symphony staff at their beautiful home in Long Beach. Ovation! members and staff became better acquainted with one and another while enjoying delicious hors d'oeuvres. Fun was had by all who attended and we’re looking forward to the next meet and greet! Pictured below is the beautiful centerpiece that Judy Boland designed herself!
Become an Ovation! Member Today! Our Ovation! volunteers generously contribute their time and talents to support an extensive schedule of concerts, community outreach activities, and education programs that serve over 25,000 children and adults each year. As a Long Beach Symphony volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to work and learn in a variety of different behind-the-scenes environments, from working with students in music education programs to raising funds at special benefit events. You’ll also have the chance to meet others who share your love of symphonic music and your desire to make a difference in the cultural life of Long Beach and its surrounding communities. Our valued volunteers are critical in our continued efforts to achieve and maintain the mission of the Long Beach Symphony. Your dues enable us to arrange events which help to raise additional funds to benefit the orchestra. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours to make these events successful. In the Community
Instrument Petting Zoo by Ethel Sanford The Long Beach Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo (IPZ) joined the “Beach Streets” event in the Cal State area on Saturday, April 29, to the delight of many children (and adults!) in the community. The IPZ provides a hands-on experience in which children (and adults) can handle the instruments of the orchestra and try their skills at playing them. Ovation volunteers, along with volunteers from the community, helped manage the program with set-up and assisting the children in handling, playing, and cleaning the instruments (each time used). No musical experience is required to volunteer with IPZ, and it’s a fun and fabulously rewarding experience! IPZ is now gearing up for its annual summer program in the public libraries, so Ovation! members can watch for their mailing with dates and locations coming soon, asking for members to sign up to volunteer. Each presentation lasts about an hour, and again – musical experience is not required. There will be an orientation for IPZ volunteers on Tuesday, June 27, led by music educators from the Long Beach Unified School District. This will be an important and fun event for IPZ volunteers to learn more about the musical instruments as through the eyes of children, plus gather with other IPZ Ovation volunteers. Watch for further details in the mailing! Although instrumental music experience is not required for volunteering with the Instrument Petting Zoo, we’re always looking for those who are amateur (or professional) musicians to help with the program. If you have such experience or talent, or have a friend who does, please consider reaching out and helping the Symphony with this truly special and important educational program for our young people and future musicians. Hoot, toot, bang, clang, strum, FUN! Please contact Director of Education and Special Events, Issy Roberts for more information at iroberts@LongBeachSymphony.org or by calling (562) 4363203 ext. 228.
Sizzling Summer Jazz in July Maestro Eckart Preu will be in town for a summer visit when he makes an appearance at the Willmore Season of Live Arts and Music (SLAM) on Saturday, July 15th! Performance will take place outdoor at Cesar E. Chavez Park in Long Beach. Principal Trombone Alex Iles and friends will perform a hot set of “Sizzling Summer Jazz”! Doors will open at 6:00PM for picnicking and the Symphony’s Instrument Petting Zoo will be available for all to interact with and enjoy before and after the performance. Maestro Preu, Alex Iles and all the musicians will be available after the performance for a fun meet and greet. Join us for some summertime fun in Long Beach! Visit www.WillmoreCity.org for more information about SLAM.
Staff Happenings and More We’re excited to announce the promotion of Issy Roberts to Director of Education and Special Events! Effective July 1, Issy will continue to oversee our education programs and will now manage developmentrelated activities such as producing Golf, Crescendo, donor events and more. This promotion is well-deserved and we look forward to Issy continuing to flourish as leader!

Ovation! volunteers are welcome to attend this educational conference where everything is discussed from how to fund an orchestra to what goes into programming. Guest speakers will include Gustavo Dudamel and Thomas Wilkins. A Homecoming Luncheon Honoring JoAnn Falletta You’re invited to A Homecoming Luncheon Honoring JoAnn Falletta on Thursday, June 8th at the Virginia Country Club at 11:30AM. Tickets are $85 and include meal and opportunity to meet JoAnn Falletta. To reserve your spot, please call 562.436.3203 ext. 229 or email brubinstein@LongBeachSymphony.org. On September 16, 1989, JoAnn Falletta began her tenure as only the fifth Music Director in the history of the Long Beach Symphony. The standing-room-only concert hall was filled with enthusiasm and a keen sense of promise for the future. During her eleven years as our artistic leader and visionary, her enduring legacy transformed the Symphony’s artistic and education programs. Sold out houses, unprecedented concert pre-talk attendance, radio broadcasts, Inaugural recordings, education program expansion and JoAnn’s commitment to presenting new and adventurous music brought us great recognition. While at Long Beach Symphony, she created an award-winning commissioning program that established Long Beach as a leader on the national scene. Her passion has resulted in the introduction of over 500 works by American Composers, including well over 100 world premieres by orchestras throughout the nation. JoAnn currently serves as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, serves as a member of the National Council on the Arts, is a recipient of many of the most prestigious conducting awards, and has been recognized with two GRAMMY Awards and ten GRAMMY nominations. JoAnn’s legacy of artistic excellence, of commitment to our youth and to the future of classical music has enriched us all and made it possible for our future under the baton of Maestro Eckart Preu. It is with admiration, gratitude and love that we welcome her back home to the Long Beach Symphony. Margie Masterson and George Murchison, Luncheon Co-chairs

A JoAnn Falletta Homecoming The Long Beach Symphony wraps up its 2016-17 Classical concert season on June 10 at 8:00PM at the Terrace Theater of the Long Beach Performing Arts Center with a homecoming performance by JoAnn Falletta, who successfully served as the Symphony’s Music Director from 1989-2000 selling out the Long Beach Performing Arts Center and heralding in an era of premiers, commissions, and a celebration of living composers. Her upcoming concert with Long Beach Symphony, the first time she has led the orchestra since she left as Music Director in 2000, opens with four movements from Shostakovich’s The Gadfly Suite, arranged for the 1955 Soviet film The Gadfly, based on the novel of the same name by Ethel Lilian Voynich and featuring a memorable violin solo that will be masterfully delivered by the Symphony’s Concertmaster, Roger Wilkie. That will be followed by Maestra Falletta’s own compilation of Prokofiev’s Suites 1-3 from Cinderella. After intermission, Falletta will be joined onstage by guest pianist, George Li, a 21-year-old prodigy whose astonishing technique, distinctive tonal quality, and exceptional musicality have earned him consistent critical acclaim and a Silver Medal at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition. Together, they will close the Symphony’s season with Tchaikovsky’s majestic Piano Concert No. 1 in B-flat minor whose powerful opening chords have become legendary in classical music! Tickets still available. Purchase tickets at www.LongBeachSymphony.org or by calling (562) 436-3203.

Encore: The Legacy Society of the Long Beach Symphony Making a Planned Gift -- What it Means to You and to the Symphony Planned Giving is remembering a charity, like the Long Beach Symphony, in your will or estate plan. What does that mean for the giver? By putting the Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony or the Long Beach Symphony Association in your will or estate plan, you are helping the orchestra effectively plan for its future. The music you love will continue! It means that you may receive tax benefits because of your donation. It means that you become a member of Encore, the Legacy group of donors and the Symphony can show its appreciation for your gift. What does it mean for the Long Beach Symphony? It means that the Symphony can do a better job planning for the future, knowing there are secure funds in the Endowment. It means that in addition to revenue from ticket sales and special events, the Symphony has a yearly donation from the Foundation it can count on as part of its annual budget, enabling the Symphony to reach more adults and more families. What is the difference in giving to the Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony or to the Long Beach Symphony Association? The Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony is a separate entity that manages the funds that are donated for endowment purposes. The corpus is invested and every year the Foundation uses income from its investments to make a donation to the Symphony to be part of its annual budget.
Funds received by the Long Beach Symphony Association are used for current operating expenses, such as underwriting a concert or education program for a particular year. We would be happy to send you a Planned Giving brochure that includes a form you may wish to fill out and return to the Symphony, indicating your interest in Planned Giving. Or, call Genevieve Macias at 562.436.3203 ext. 226 or email her at gmacias@LongBeachSymphony.org. If you have already included the Symphony in your will or estate plan, thank you! Please let the Symphony know so you may be included in the Encore Society events. And, you have the pleasure of knowing you are helping make symphonic music available for generations to come!
Thank you for remembering the Symphony! Margie Masterson, Chair, Planned Giving Committee Long Beach Symphony Board of Directors
