As the Symphony’s 2017‒2018 season is set to open in a few weeks, Ovation’s year is also off and running! I am delighted to serve as this year’s Ovation! President as we enter the exciting “Eckart Era.” It looks to be a fabulous season which translates into fun and engagement for volunteers of Ovation!. I invite you to join us in our wonderful events and opportunities this year as I look forward to seeing and meeting you. It is my hope that each of you will attend or participate in one or more of our events this year. This fall there are several exciting volunteer opportunities in which you can participate. The Instrument Petting Zoo has three outings scheduled at special events in Long Beach which are highlighted in this issue of the Score. An “Ovation! Occasion” trip to the Huntington Library is planned for Thursday, October 19 which will include motor coach transportation, a docent led tour, and lunch. Serving refreshments at symphony rehearsals is always a fun and much appreciated service and a wonderful way to interact with the musicians. In December, volunteering at the Symphony’s Golf Tournament is always a hoot!

But stay tuned – there’s much more to come after the first of the year! Mark your calendar for January 21, 2018 for a new & exciting “Uncorked” event at Friedman’s Appliances. The event will include food stations provided by Ovation! members, wine bar, beer garden, music, prizes, and more. Bobbie Cusato is heading up planning the event with a fabulous committee so it’s an event you won’t want to miss! Watch for details and invitation to come. Looking back at summer, the Instrument Petting Zoo gets a big “shout out” for appearing at eight public libraries and the Sizzling Summer Jazz Concert at Cesar E. Chavez Park, plus a training session before the outings began. Thank you to the Ovation! volunteers who helped with this valuable and rewarding project that takes the instruments out to youngsters in the community.

Ovation!

As a member benefit this year, we’re instituting concert “Vouchers for Volunteers” (See “Did You Know?” in this issue of The Score.) Meet Your Ovation! Board by Renee B. Simon Ovation! volunteers manage to gravitate to the service that feels familiar and where they can do what brings a barrel of joy. The perfect match for Ethel Sanford not too long after she retired from teaching kindergarten at Jane Adams school was joining the Instrument Petting Zoo committee. Introducing the youngsters to the orchestra was a natural, she knew how to talk to them and as important, how to talk to the parents. As a teacher, she was delighted to watch the kids as they found wonderment in creating new sounds.

It was Bobbie Cusato who nudged Ethel into joining Ovation! by suggesting she take on a simple task of boosting our telephone tree. After Ethel found the Petting Zoo it was just a slippery slide from chairing that committee to her accepting her newest role as Ovation! President for 2017-2018. But she will not give up her place with the Petting Zoo — too much fun. Besides, attendance keeps growing with more than 100 at a recent presentation. They need her. Ethel’s, husband Tom, and their two young sons arrived in Long Beach in 1966. Tom in time joined the LBSA board as the area of community service he sought. They have been Classical and POPS! subscribers and Ethel is eager to welcome the new Eckart Era. A city, she says, is measured by its arts. The Symphony is so important for our community, as are the music education programs the Symphony and Ovation! bring to our elementary school youngsters. Both Sanford sons and three grandsons live in San Diego which will probably keep Ethel and Tom commuting south often. She has been involved with the Junior League for many years. Her priority for Ovation! will be to attract a host of younger members who will also become active and involved Symphony subscribers.

About Ovation! The mission of this organization shall be to support the programs, policies and goals of the Long Beach Symphony through the coordination and facilitation of volunteer activities.

Ovation! Volunteers of the Long Beach Symphony

Thank you Pauline by Renee B. Simon Our June 2017 Ovation! Council meeting closed out the season and gave us the opportunity to thank Pauline Eade-Sheppard for her two years of service as our Ovation! president. And what a great president she was. Those of you who recall that when Pauline accepted that responsibility, she said her one goal would be to build our membership. Did she ever! Bobbie Cusato, who is great at keeping tabs on such numbers, chaired a little committee of herself, Ethel Sanford, and Renee Simon to surprise Pauline with a thanks for being Ovation’s top notch membership builder. During her term, we added 24 new members – an unheard-of feat for Ovation!. Bobbie designed a poster board display with all the new members’ names. Actually, until only hours before the meeting, the number was just 22 but Bobbie had left spaces for the two newest names that Pauline could herself write in. Ethel had ordered delightful cocktail napkins to recognize the occasion and brought in huge balloons shaped as 22 that we affixed to the poster board display. As the membership item came up on the agenda, the committee of three marched into the room carrying balloons, the list of new members, and cocktail napkins at the ready as we toasted Pauline. It was a festive moment topped only by the day’s election of new officers and our new president, Ethel Sanford.

Ovation! Volunteers of the Long Beach Symphony

Instrument Petting Zoo by Issy Roberts I think I can safely say we had our best summer yet of Instrument Petting Zoo events! We are lucky to have many volunteers selflessly give their time to help inspire a love of music in our community's young families. We had five new Ovation! volunteers participate this year. We were also graced by the presence of talented student musicians from the Long Beach Unified School District and National Charity League who greatly contributed to the presentations with their instrument demonstrations! We visited eight libraries (three new locations) and served over 650 children and parents in just three short months. We received generous donations of good quality instruments to improve our inventory including a clarinet, oboe, trumpet, french horn, and even a saxophone. Many thanks to the Wolfe Family Foundation for helping fund purchases of much needed supplies such as reeds, mouth pieces, and strings. I also want to make a special shout out to Ethel Sanford for all her great work helping coordinate the program and to Miep Van Tyen for jumping in to give a couple presentations. This program is very near and dear to my heart and would not be possible without the help of all our dedicated volunteers, so... THANK YOU! I hope you'll join me throughout the year at one of the many community events. Yours in Music, Issy Roberts

Sizzling Summer Jazz at Cesar E. Chavez Park On Saturday, July 15, Principal Trombone Alex Iles and friends took the Cesar E. Chavez Park amphitheater stage to perform favorites by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Tom Kubis, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and even Stevie Wonder. The concert took the audience through a jazzy journey through 100 years of jazz! Maestro Eckart Preu enjoyed the concert and made a visit to the Instrument Petting Zoo to interact with and teach the young aspiring musicians who picked up instruments. It was a delightful evening with many new and old friends of the Symphony. Thank you to Willmore City Heritage Association for inviting us to be part of their Season of Live Arts and Music schedule!

Encore: The Legacy Society of the Long Beach Symphony Making a Planned Gift -- What it Means to You and to the Symphony Planned Giving is remembering a charity, like the Long Beach Symphony, in your will or estate plan. What does that mean for the giver? By putting the Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony or the Long Beach Symphony Association in your will or estate plan, you are helping the orchestra effectively plan for its future. The music you love will continue! It means that you may receive tax benefits because of your donation. It means that you become a member of Encore, the Legacy group of donors and the Symphony can show its appreciation for your gift. What does it mean for the Long Beach Symphony? It means that the Symphony can do a better job planning for the future, knowing there are secure funds in the Endowment. It means that in addition to revenue from ticket sales and special events, the Symphony has a yearly donation from the Foundation it can count on as part of its annual budget, enabling the Symphony to reach more adults and more families. What is the difference in giving to the Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony or to the Long Beach Symphony Association? The Foundation for the Long Beach Symphony is a separate entity that manages the funds that are donated for endowment purposes. The corpus is invested and every year the Foundation uses income from its investments to make a donation to the Symphony to be part of its annual budget.

Funds received by the Long Beach Symphony Association are used for current operating expenses, such as underwriting a concert or education program for a particular year. We would be happy to send you a Planned Giving brochure that includes a form you may wish to fill out and return to the Symphony, indicating your interest in Planned Giving. Or, call Genevieve Macias at 562.436.3203 ext. 226 or email her at gmacias@LongBeachSymphony.org. If you have already included the Symphony in your will or estate plan, thank you! Please let the Symphony know so you may be included in the Encore Society events. And, you have the pleasure of knowing you are helping make symphonic music available for generations to come!

Thank you for remembering the Symphony! Margie Masterson, Chair, Planned Giving Committee Long Beach Symphony Board of Directors
