The Symphony is very excited to be presenting a brand new concert this spring designed entirely for children of all ages and their families. The concert, sponsored in part by a grant from the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation and the Port of Long Beach, will be held on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 3:00pm at the Terrace Theater. All children are free and general seating adult tickets are just $15.00. The family concert will be a celebration of the fun of orchestral music. Broadway star and Long Beach darling, Susan Egan will narrate and lead sing-alongs with the audience and new music director Eckart Preu will conduct the Symphony.
The concert will be preceded and followed by a Musical Playground on the Plaza of the Terrace Theater open to the public. Games, an instrument petting zoo, community performances, and arts and crafts will await the public with food trucks and more! Families from all over Long Beach are encouraged to come and enjoy an experience celebrating the joy of making music together.

Uncorked!, Back by Popular Demand by Bobbie Cusato It has been six years since Ovation! last presented this one-of-a-kind fundraiser on the greenbelt in Spinnaker Bay. City regulations forced us to find another location, and we’ve done it! Friedmans Home Experience (where we did Chefs’ Challenge) has generously offered us their 26,000 sq. ft. space, their two free parking lots, plus street parking, and the exclusive use of their facility on Sunday, January 21, 2018, from 4 to 6:30pm. Newbies to Ovation! will want to know this is OUR all-volunteer fundraiser in support of the Long Beach Symphony. The low ticket price of only $50/person includes all champagne, wine, beer, food, music and logo wine glass. In addition, enjoy the opportunity to participate in numerous activities such as guessing the number of wine corks, ring toss for bottles of wine, fun photo booth, betting on the “wheel of prizes” and more. Your Uncorked! committee not only works the event but buys their own tickets to attend, and we encourage all Ovation! members to join us by volunteering, attending and bringing friends. Haven’t received your invitation? Let us know immediately. We have loads of volunteer opportunities for that day. Please email Bobbie to find out how you can help or to get more information about this easy-going, fun-filled event. We need participation from all of Ovation! to make this a financial success!
A Note from the Executive Director Happy New Year! While we are half way through Eckart Preu’s inaugural season, this is the time of year that we are mailing next season’s subscriber renewal brochures and we are extremely excited about Eckart Preu’s second season with the Long Beach Symphony! He so eloquently describes next year’s Classical programming: “The upcoming 2018-2019 Classical Series has been designed to combine musical symphonic milestones that defined the past with compositions that might shape the future of Classical music. You will also notice a substantial stylistic spread of the repertoire. We will mark Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday with compositions by Zappa and Gershwin, celebrate German Romanticism with the friendship of Brahms and Dvořák, explore the emotional music of Northern Europe, and experience the pinnacle of all music: Beethoven’s Ninth with the Long Beach Camerata Singers. An extraordinary season needs extraordinary soloists: Roger Wilkie, Terrence Wilson, Joshua Roman and Simone Porter will join the Long Beach Symphony. The 2018-2019 Classical Series will continue to showcase the dazzling virtuosity and emotional depth of your world-class orchestra.” This is a busy month as we prepare for the upcoming Toyota Youth Concerts, our free fieldtrip concerts for 12,000 4th and 5th graders from LBUSD on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. These free concerts would not happen without our Ovation! volunteers and the support of our donors, musicians and staff. Next month, legendary classical guitarist, Pepe Romero and Flamenco dancer Arleen Hurtado join Eckart and the Symphony on Saturday, February 3 and then on February 17, our POPS! concert will be conducted by Eckart and features Susan Egan and David Burnham singing hits from Broadway and The Great American Songbook. We look forward to sharing all this great music with our community!

UPCOMING CONCERTS
Spanish Nights with Pepe Romero Preview On Saturday, February 3 at 8:00pm, in the Terrace Theater (300 E. Ocean Blvd.), internationally-acclaimed classical guitarist, Pepe Romero, will join Maestro Eckart Preu, the musicians of the Long Beach Symphony and a professional flamenco dancer in a program of rhythmic music built around the dances, songs and traditions of the Iberian Peninsula. Giving a nod to those who think the best Spanish music was written by the French, the concert opens with Chabrier’s Espana, a short work written in 1883 after a trip to Spain. That is followed by Jitmo Rondo: Flamenco for Orchestra (1954) by Carlos Surinach, which incorporates three distinct Flamenco rhythms with extensive use of marimba, finger snapping and even a live flamenco dancer (Arleen Hurtado). One of the highlight of the evening, will be when Pepe Romero performs Concierto de Málaga, a composition written in 1981 by his late father, Celedonio Romero, founder of the celebrated Romero Guitar Quartet. Pepe Romero is a living legend in the world of classical music. He has been honored by kings, heads of state, and major institutions. He has appeared with leading symphony orchestras throughout the world, has collaborated with distinguished conductors and produced the finest recordings of classical guitar repertoire. His commitment to education led him to serve as Professor of Guitar at USC and UC San Diego, among others, and in 2004 was appointed Distinguished Artist in Residence at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. His previous 2012 concert with Long Beach Pepe Romero Symphony was one of the top selling concerts for the orchestra. Following intermission, the Symphony interprets Spain through the eyes of Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov in his Capriccio Espagnol, a lively five-movement orchestral suite celebrating Spanish folk melodies with flashy solos from different instruments in the orchestra. So well received was this work when it premiered in St. Petersburg in 1887, that the audience went wild, demanding that the orchestra perform the entire piece again! Maestro Preu will wrap the evening with two suites of music drawn from Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera Carmen, including the familiar Procession of the Toreadors and Gypsy Dance. As befitting the music, Dancer Arleen Hurtado returns to the stage to add some whirling and twirling to the magnificent fanfare.
Concert-goers are invited to attend a pre-concert talk in the hall at 7:00 pm with Maestro Preu and Pepe Romero. Tickets available by calling the Symphony box office at (562) 436-3203 or by visiting www.LongBeachSymphony.org.

Peggy’s POPS! Preview by Peggy Magee Come celebrate Valentine’s Day as well as other important Symphony landmarks on February 17, 2018!
Maestro Eckart Preu
Please join us for newly appointed Music Director Eckart Preu’s Long Beach POPS! debut along with the return of fan-favorites, Susan Egan and David Burnham. Together, Maestro Preu and these creative Guest Artists have curated a very special program featuring beloved music from The Great American Songbook, romantic Films and Broadway. The Orchestra will shine in Gershwin’s Overture from Girl Crazy, Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” and “As Time Goes By” from Casablanca. Susan Egan, the original Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, will be singing several of her favorite tunes and a show-stopping Judy Garland medley. David Burnham, whose Broadway credits include Wicked and The Light in the Piazza, will join Susan for a beautiful duet from The King and I along with some other romantic and fun surprises. Our dance floors on either side of the stage should will be in full swing! This POPS! concert will be perfect your Valentine’s weekend date night! Did you know that September, 1958 marks the 60th POPS! Jubilee Anniversary? The first POPS! concert was presented at the Lakewood Country Club and was sponsored by the newly established Symphony Guild, which was re-branded in 2000 to Ovation!. That first concert was intended, as Guild founder Laura Killingsworth, wrote in the program, “to assist the fund raising for the continued support of our fine Symphony Orchestra. It is our hope that the first Long Beach Symphony POPS! concert will become one of the most important musical events of this city.” Fun fact: Music from My Fair Lady was played at that opening concert and appropriately will be performed on February 17th as well. Peggy Magee is the Director of Artistic Operations at the Long Beach Symphony. Tickets available by calling the Symphony box office at (562) 436-3203 or by visiting www.LongBeachSymphony.org.

Musician’s Corner
An Interview with Jenni Olson Name and instrument? Jenni Olson, Flute Where were you born? Did your parents and siblings have any music involvement or influence? When did you move to Southern California and why? How important was music in your family’s home? I was born in Hawaii while my dad was in the Army. I am an only child and neither parent claims to have any musical talent. However, my mom did play a few songs on guitar and took some organ lessons while she was pregnant with me. I moved down to Los Angeles in 1999 to start my Master’s degree. There was always music playing in the house, but mostly I recall listening to oldies (‘50s and ‘60s top hits) and country hits by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. I also remember going to see a few musicals as a kid and some of my first CDs were of the Boston Pops with John Williams conducting. There is a running joke in the family that I got my musical talent from one of my mom's four sisters. Apparently, a couple of them played the flute in high school and my mom's youngest sister is notorious for being first chair even though she couldn't read a note of music. It was her flute that I started on. With which other orchestras do you play for or have played? Do you do studio work? Any special performing opportunities such as recordings, touring, etc.? Any special events you have participated in? I was principal flute of the Stockton Symphony for 11 seasons and 2nd flute for the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra for 9 seasons. I have been fortunate enough to play on some amazing soundtracks including Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, Ferdinand, and La La Land. I have 6 albums that I have recorded. I have two Christmas albums, two solo albums and two chamber music albums. One of my albums titled The Dreams of Birds is distributed through Naxos and is a collection of premiere recordings of chamber music by some of California's most amazing composers and performed by some of the top musicians in Los Angeles. These can all be found on cdbaby and itunes. Titles: Christmas Favorites (flute and harp) We Wish You a Merry Christmas (2 flutes, viola and cello) 40 Little pieces (flute and piano) 30 Intermediate pieces (flute and piano0 The Dreams of Birds (chamber music) Jenni Scott (chamber music) Who is your favorite composer and why? What kind of music do you most enjoy playing? Hobbies? Anything else you'd like our members to know? A couple of my favorite composers to play are Brahms and Beethoven. However, I really love listening to Mahler because his pieces are so descriptive and autobiographical that it is like listening to a movie. I have a lot of hobbies! I love to hike and bike. I have climbed Mt. Whitney twice.... once with two other Long Beach Symphony members, Gary Bovyer and Joe Meyer. I really enjoy being outside which is one of the things that makes Long Beach so great since we can be outside all of the time. I took a few sailing lessons last year and absolutely loved it. I'm looking forward to making more time for that in the future. Of course, my biggest source of enjoyment comes from being with my 5-year-old son. He has not made it to a Long Beach Symphony concert yet (way past his bedtime), but he has come to some of the afternoon rehearsals for the pops concerts and loves it. His favorite instrument is the trombone....I blame Alex Iles.

Meet Your Ovation! Board by Renee B. Simon Retirement from her long-time career in the business software industry gave Victoria Chenevey, Ovation’s administrative secretary, an opportunity she had eagerly sought to move into the world of volunteering. It was her intense enjoyment of music that two years ago led her right to our door when she joined Ovation! and accepted a place on the Board of Directors. Volunteering with Ovation! has been a perfect fit. For Victoria the experience has been fun especially highlighted by her involvement in our rehearsal receptions setting out food for the orchestra’s rehearsal break. “It’s an awesome opportunity to meet and talk with our musicians,” she says. She even met Maestro Preu who joined them briefly. She has also helped with the Petting Zoo and is looking forward to where else she can next lend Ovation! a hand. She also volunteers with the League of Women Voters where she can help people become better informed and more involved voters. Victoria also participates with Action on Aging, a SCAN-sponsored service for frail elderly. A native of Wooster, Ohio, Victoria attended Ohio State University but a visit to Long Beach friends one winter persuaded her Sunshine had a big edge over snow and she easily became a Southern Californian. Ohio has since been where she goes to visit family. For relaxation, she uses her sewing talent to create a variety of crafts and such home decor items as fabric baskets and even clothes. For more details, be sure to get better acquainted with our administrative secretary.
Ovation! Volunteers of the Long Beach Symphony Toyota Youth Concerts Wednesday, January 31 and Thursday, February 1, 2018 Long Beach Performing Arts Center, Terrace Theater Those of you who have volunteered in the past remember the thrill of seeing all those wide-eyed children (nearly 12,000 of them, all 4th and 5th graders from every Long Beach elementary school) as they filed into the Terrace Theater for a special concert performed by your Long Beach Symphony. If you haven’t volunteered before to help usher the kids to their seats you are in for a treat! Even if you have not already replied to serve as a volunteer, it’s not too late. Call Marilyn North at (562) 429-8891 or Issy Roberts at (562) 436-3203 ext. 228 to let them know which day or days you would like to help. Both sessions are in the morning. Also, if you have a friend who would enjoy being a part of this very special experience, bring them along. You will be thoroughly briefed on everything you will need to know as we get closer to the program. The concerts are Wednesday, January 31st and Thursday, February 1st. You should arrive at the Terrace Theater by 8:30am. (we’ll have coffee ready) and plan to stay until 12:30pm. We like volunteers to wear red jackets or sweaters but if you don’t have anything red, don’t worry. You being there is what is important. Thank you so much for making these events a success!
