Texas is one of a handful of states that has a state wide organization (the University Interscholastic League in Texas) that promotes academic competition for elementary and junior high school students by offering a variety of academic contests. At this level several school districts combine to offer either fall or spring district contests at a district level much as in athletics. Contests are offered beginning in the second grade. The subject matter covers 19 areas that are as diverse as Story Telling and Science. Last year Garner dipped in toes back in to academic UIL after a five year hiatus and rediscovered the benefits of student participation. Three of the major benefits were that students were excited to find that their talents were recognized and appreciated; they were able to visualize themselves as successful; and most importantly they were eager to accept academic challenges. This year Garner Elementary took up the challenge not only to enter all events, but to also field teams in each applicable event. Last Friday, the school held its own in school competition to determine which students would be going to district competition at Windthorst and Archer City on December 9th.
