THE LIBI LOG - 2009 Fall Edition

THE LIBI LOG LIBI linked to the Community Dear LIBI Community,

With graduation a pleasant but already a distant memory, and the warm days all but behind us, it is time to turn our attention to creating a different kind of warmth- one that comes from doing good deeds and helping those in need! Over the summer I chanced upon some old clips of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1971 and a particular line - "So shines a good deed in a weary world"struck a particular chord with me. Upon some digging I realized that the line was adapted by David Seltzer from William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and actually reads: "How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world." Thus, the idea for this quarter's LIBI Log was born! Members of the LIBI community have always been involved in supporting wonderful causes, so I wanted to celebrate their efforts by profiling just a few that have thrown a beam onto a weary world. I hope you will enjoy reading about our efforts and that you will consider participating in the future. Best, Monica Foote President

Terry Canavan students can listen to multi-voice dictation DVDs, shelves a collection of books on tape for students to write in steno, and she presents a class on information literacy.

As the librarian at the Commack campus, Ms. Canavan does a wonderful job providing the necessary resource materials for all the court reporting students. However, it does not stop there. One of her prize additions to the campus is the display that blankets the walls in Room 11 entitled “The History of Court Reporting.” Faculty, students, and visitors to the campus are fascinated with this interesting and informative display.

The basic theme of the convention presentation was providing a good understanding of the Internet and the worldwide web in order that users feel more comfortable with this valuable research tool are able to perform a search that will bring back useable results and how to evaluate those results. The presentation covered the history of the Internet and the development of the “www” and search engines, provided definitions of portals, directories, blogs, and RSS feeds. Practical and informative websites were used as examples.

During a visit by the evaluators of the National Court Reporters Association last spring, the Commack campus was honored when Ms.Canavan was asked to be a presenter at the National Court Reporters Associations’ Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., in early August. This invitation was extended to Ms. Canavan after the evaluators discovered that she is, indeed, more than just a librarian --she writes a library newsletter, created an area in the library where

Ms. Canavan’s presentation at the convention was well received, and the evaluations of the attendees were all outstanding; and, yes, she was asked to present at next year’s convention in California.

decided she needed to work for herself but didn’t know what she wanted to do. A suggestion from her sister provided the answer, Court Reporting. It was the perfect solution, and the very next day, Donna went back across the street to LIBI and enrolled for the second time.

Donna Priani is a LIBI Commack graduate Class of 1986 and Class of 2005. She has had two separate careers and has succeeded at both.

For the next two years, she had no life. She worked fulltime during the day and attended evening classes because it was the only time available to her, Donna got up every morning at 4:30 a.m. and practiced for two hours on her steno writer before going to work. She did it because she believed what she was told about the importance of practicing every day.

Donna first graduated from LIBI with a Diploma in Executive Secretarial at the age of 18. She started to work the very next day with a company right across the street from the school; and during her tenure at that company, she rose through the ranks from Executive Secretary to Office Manager to Director of Marketing to General Manager.

Donna graduated for the second time from LIBI in 2005 with an Associate Degree in Court Reporting. Very shortly she was working as a freelance court reporter. Within a couple of months, she had acquired her very own client, a busy law firm. Six months after that, she incorporated and started her own court reporting agency.

When her son was born, Donna realized that she was going to be missing out on a lot of his life working the hours she did. She

Twice Donna has started a new career at LIBI and two times she has met her challenges and achieved her goals. She is a two-time success story.

National Honor Societies

We would also like to announce our new membership into the National Technical Honor Society. The mission of the NTHS is to honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, and enhance career opportunities. Long Island Business Institute is aiming to carry out the NTHS mission to lift up and publicly recognize men and women committed to excellence, values, courage, and achievement.

Long Island Business Institute is delighted to inform you that we have officially become members of two national honor societies this summer. Our first membership is to the Alpha Beta Kappa National Honor Society Our new chapter, The Gamma of New York, was officially established in August 2009.

These privileged students will be nominated for membership based on a number of criteria. Academic excellence and commitment to education play a key role in this process. These selected elite students will always serve as an inspiration to our current students. Their achievements will also serve as a tremendous tribute to our instructors and staff for many years to come.

Alpha Beta Kappa seeks to promote and reward personal integrity and excellence in mental and physical work and skills. Membership is based on merit. It is the uncommon person who qualifies for membership in Alpha Beta Kappa. The purpose of the society is to help Long Island Business Institute students and alumni through the encouragement and recognition of superior academic work in their respective programs of study.

We are looking forward to inducting our first group of members into both the Gamma of New York chapter and the NTHS this coming fall. 3

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Lennox Debra as the Associate Director of the English Department at the Flushebra ing campus. Lenny joined the Lennox D Commack campus in October of 2007 as a teacher of College English and Business Communications to our court reporting students. He maintains a wonderful rapport with his students and has instilled in them the benefits of reading. The students refer to him as an “awesome” teacher. Mr. Debra majored in English and graduated with honors from Hobart College. One of his professors at Hobart had this to say about Lenny: “He was one of the best English majors I ever had in my classes. He specialized in the works of James Joyce, and he did honors work on Finnegans Wake. At his three-hour oral defense of his thesis, I was greatly impressed; he lives and breathes literature.”

Small Business Club The Small Business Club is an active, successful organization at the LIBI Flushing Campus. Students who are members of the club operate the Student Service Center which sells school supplies such as USBs, notebooks, highlighters, etc. These dedicated members volunteer their time and gain valuable experience for future employment. The objectives of the Small Business Club are to provide outstanding service, low prices, and quality merchandise to their customers. With the profits from the Service Center, the club has purchased an LCD monitor which displays campus information to the students. In addition, the club recently purchased a glass display case for their products. A cash register (donated by the school) has added another opportunity for student workers to enhance their cashiering skills. Members of the club keep themselves busy with inventory maintenance, advertising strategies, and customer service on a daily basis. The club has organized bake sales, holds monthly pizza parties for volunteers, and is planning to sponsor a “T-shirt” day in order to market future sales of LIBI logo apparel. With all this work to do, the club is always looking for new members to help with their entrepreneurial activities.
