t’s When I assumed the Presidency I began to familiarize myself with the LIBI culture by speaking to our students. The overwhelming sentiment that I walked away with from these conversations was that our students feel that “LIBI cares” about them. I heard stories of hardship and struggle, but also of perseverance--thanks to the help and encouragement students received from their teachers, academic advisors and various individuals throughout the college…I heard about feelings of connectedness to the college community, the positive interactions that boosted self-confidence, and many stories of academic growth. Through these conversations I also realized that many of our students are with us as a result of a recommendation of one of their relatives or friends who was attending or graduated from LIBI. In fact, many of our students attend with their siblings, cousins, and some with their parents and children! LIBI is, indeed, a closely knit community. LIBI is, indeed, a big caring family…hence, the theme for this quarter’s newsletter –Families…Far and Near. I hope you enjoy this issue! Best regards, Monica Foote President

It truly is a family affair for this trio of smiling faces each of whom has a sister who graduated from LIBI Commack and is now a working reporter. Angela Michaels' (left) sister, Melissa Michaels, graduated in September '07; Saniya Youngblood's (center) sister, La Toya Youngblood, graduated in January '07; and Christine Oliva's (right) sister, Kate Boccard, graduated in May of '07. Coincidentally, all three graduate sisters were attending classes at LIBI at the same time.
PERRY & KIERNAN
Stacey Perry thought of becoming a court reporter when she was younger but life got in the way. About a year ago, her son, Patrick Kiernan, started talking excitedly about a friend of his who had just graduated as a court reporter. He wanted to attend an open house at Commack to see what it was all about. Stacey, recognizing her second chance, said to count her in. Mother & son currently attend day classes at LIBI Commack.
ROSA & ROSARIO
When Yuri Rosa (left) lost her mother, she moved in with her brother and her sister-in-law, Rebeca Rosario (right). Rebeca was enrolling in classes at LIBI Commack to become a court reporter and suggested Yuri join her. Yuri said, "Why Not." The two are not only sisters-in-law but are close friends.
LONGHOFERS
Brother and sister, James and Marianne Longhofer, are actually fraternal twins. It was Marianne who was interested in court reporting. When she told James that she was going to an open house at LIBI Commack, he decided to go along for the ride. Now both are in their second year of studies to become court reporters.
Alan Florez
My mother was going to a school in Queens called Long Island Business Institute. I took the college route with her and enrolled at LIBI and never looked back. The route was intimidating at first but I finally fell into a crowd with the right mannerisms. I changed into a man with No limits, No regrets, No sorrows in life. Now that I have finished Long Island Business Institute with my GED and my Associates Degree in business management, I’m Planning on moving forward and purse my MBA. I will never forget what this school gave me.
Denise Florez
For me it was a marvelous experience being in the same class as my son. We would study together and quiz each other before tests. It was the best time ever. LIBI Flushing gave both of us the support to fullfil our goals, our degrees.
Commack Alumni Spotlight I was a freelance reporter back in the 70's for about 6 years. I left court reporting to marry and raise a family. When my two daughters were both in college, I went back to school ( from theory) and focused hard to get out as quickly as I could so I could start working. I freelanced for one year at Precise Court Reporting in Mineola, New York. I took the test for the Workers' Compensation Board, passed and have been here for about one year. I am currently practicing and studying for the District Court test coming up at the end of April.
New LIBI Faces We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Joanne Hsiao as the new Fiscal Manager of Long Island Business Institute. Joanne is a CPA and holds an MBA from Baruch College, CUNY. She has extensive industry experience and will be handling a wide range of accounting issues. She will also be in charge of related employee benefits. We believe Joanne’s knowledge and experience make her an excellent choice to help LIBI as it continues to expand in the community. Please join us in welcoming Joanne to the LIBI family.
On Monday, February 23rd and Tuesday, February 24th, the Career Services Department invited over 100 LIBI alumni to attend a “Skills Refresher Workshop.” With the help of some of our dedicated instructors, graduates were able to refresh their skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Keyboarding. This workshop was a great success, and we hope to have continued success with similar events in the future. If you are interested in attending alumni events, please email us at alumni@libi.edu.
