SPRING 2010
THE LOG
"Be Dear LIBI Community, Having successfully shoveled and plowed our way through this winter, you are enthusiastically invited to peruse the Spring edition of the LIBI Log. The winter has indeed emphasized its presence in the Northeast this year. Record snowfall, however, pales in comparison to budget deficits on the state and federal level that have made for a difficult few months and could adversely affect the LIBI community. As lawmakers deliberate over how to balance budgets, post-secondary educators are bracing for the potential negative impact on the students we serve. Because so many of our students could be financially compromised by the proposed reduction in New York State's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), LIBI is taking a proactive stance to ensure that our voices are heard by the state legislators. Last week a group of LIBI students, joined by administrators, took a trip to Albany to appeal personally to the lawmakers. The full story, along with pictures, is included in this newsletter. We will be continuing our lobbying efforts for the next few weeks, and I hope to have good news to report in the next edition of the LIBI Log. On a much brighter note, LIBI has been approved to offer a new program in Homeland Security earlier this year. We will be welcoming our first group of students into the Homeland Security major in April at the Flushing campus. The program will also be offered at our Commack campus as of the June 2010 semester. A warm welcome to all of the new faculty and students joining the LIBI family.
a Part of IT"
In one of my previous communications, I reported that LIBI has received its official charter from the Alpha Beta Kappa (ABK) National Honor Society. On Saturday, February 27, our first group of 33 students from the Commack campus participated in the ABK induction ceremony. On behalf of the LIBI faculty, administrators and staff, I want to congratulate our first group of inductees on their election to a premier National Honor Society! This high honor is given only to individuals who have achieved significant success in the field of academics and who exemplify the highest standards of community service, leadership and character. I also want to congratulate the families of our inductees; the large and enthusiastic audience at our February 27th inaugural induction ceremony clearly demonstrates that our students have a wonderful support network. The Flushing campus ABK induction will be held on Friday, April 9, 2010. Students who are ineligible are welcome to join the ceremony as guests to help celebrate this very special milestone for LIBI. If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Jerilyn Marinan at jmarinan@libi.edu or stop by the Career Services Office on the third floor of the main building. I wish you a wonderful Spring semester and I hope you will consider getting involved in one of the many great activities being planned for the upcoming months. LIBI is poised for another banner year academically and culturally -- be a part of it! Best, Monica W. Foote President
LONG ISLAND BUSINESS INSTITUTE
LOBBIES TAP
HOST FIRST ABK INDUCTION Commack Campus
On March 1st and 2nd Long Island Business Institute students from the Commack and Flushing campuses lobbied against TAP cuts in Albany. Our LIBI students Luis Figueroa, Dong Peng Ng, Tricia O’Brien and Wendy Garber were able to share their stories and speak to our elected officials about the importance of keeping the TAP program alive and making sure that all students have access to higher education. The campaign was a success. Many of the lawmakers made it clear that they would fight for TAP and reject the Governor’s proposal that would cut TAP by 20% for students attending 2-year institutions. WAY to GO, LIBI LOBBYISTS!!!
Leadership and service, personal integrity, good moral c h a r a c t e r, a n d d d scholarship were the hallmark characteristics cited for the first honor society inductees of the Long Island Business Institute into the Alpha Beta Kappa National Honor Society. The ceremony, which was held February 27, 2010, at the Sheraton Hotel in Long Island located on Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, was a moving tribute to 32 students of this two-year business college.
LIBI COMMACK HELPS SPREAD LITERACY WORLDWIDE
Alpha Beta Kappa National Honor Society recognizes excellence in both personal and academic achievement in the fields of Trade, Technology, Science, Industry, and General Studies at nationally accredited institutions.
Guest speakers included Charles Gardner, President of the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce, who spoke of how the characteristic requirements of the honor society are the same the students will use in building their careers and lives in society after graduation; John M. Kennedy, Jr., Suffolk County Legislator, who administered the official oath; and Ibrahim Khan, representing New York State Senator Brian Foley with a special presentation of certificates of achievement from the New York State Senate.
LIBI Commack is involved in a worldwide literacy initiative with two organizations: Better World Books and Reading Reflections. Better World Books is a for-profit social enterprise that collects used books and sells them online to raise money to fund both libraries and nonprofit literacy groups, such as National Center for Family Literacy. Reading Reflections, a local non-profit organization created by two teen-aged brothers, collects and donates books to agencies globally. Not only do they provide books for local Long Island agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services, St. Mary’s Care at Home program, and Stony Brook Hospital, but they were noteworthy in restocking the shelves of a library in Guyana that had a fire, and are currently working with a volunteer group that is building a library in Ethiopia. Thanks to our students and faculty, in just two months LIBI Commack filled four large boxes for Better World Books and six large boxes, designated for Ethiopia, for Reading Reflections. Collections are still going on and students and faculty can still donate their used books by dropping them off at the college library or in the designated drop-off boxes. Many thanks to librarian, Terry Canavan, for organizing the collection, packing, and shipping of the books to their designated benefactors.
Congratulations to all the LIBI inductees on their achievement.
ABK CEREMONY Flushing Campus Scheduled for April 9, 2010 Our inaugural induction ceremony of Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society, for the Flushing campus, will honor our best and brightest students on April 9, 2010 at the Sheraton in Flushing, New York. These students represent the top 5% in our student body with grade point averages of a 3.75 or greater. Alpha Beta Kappa was established in 1977 to encourage and recognize the superior academic work in honorable fields of endeavor by students in private postsecondary institutions. Alpha Beta Kappa is the only honor society recognizing excellence in the arts, the sciences, the trades, business, and both technical and general studies. This year we will be recognizing approximately 29 first time members. For additional criteria information please contact Stacey Johnson, Chief Academic and Student Services Officer or Jerilyn Marinan, Director of Career Services.

LIBI GRADUATE PURSUES A DEGREE IN LAW
LIBI graduate Sarah Satalino, Class of 2003, used her court reporting degree as the foundation for a career in law. Now studying to be a lawyer at Brooklyn School of Law, Sarah recalls how she made the transition. “Upon graduating high school I attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice. After completing two years there, I became disenchanted with my major (Forensic Science) and began to explore other career options. My older sister recommended we both undertake a career in court reporting. Having a cousin already in the field, we turned to her for guidance and advice. Our own personal research and our cousin’s success and commendations fostered our decision to attend LIBI. “I enrolled at LIBI and began classes in September 2001, and finished the program in the summer of 2003. Upon completion I immediately began interning with Enright Court Reporting and decided to complete my bachelor’s degree at John Jay. Upon re-enrolling at John Jay, I changed my major to criminal justice. I attended John Jay full time (taking all my classes two days a week) and worked for Enright part time (three days a week). In the summer of 2005 I graduated from John Jay and began working full time at Enright. After five experience-filled years at Enright, the perpetual student in me began clamoring for attention. Once again, I began exploring career options and ultimately decided a career in law was just the challenge I was looking for!
Our very own President Monica Foote, will be featured, as well as give welcoming remarks to the attendees. Dr. Jacqueline Kane will be our honorary keynote speaker. Dr. Kane is a N.Y. State Department of Education retiree with extensive experience and expertise in higher education. We look forward to presentations from our peers who come from Lehman College, Westchester Community College, Professional Business College, and Mercy College. This honor is truly something we should all be proud of.
“Now, in my second semester of law school, as I write my first legal memorandum for summary judgment, using two depositions as a basis for factual support, my perception of the usefulness and importance of a deposition transcript has been fully fortified. I am truly blessed to be experiencing the legal profession from multiple perspectives and I take delight in the fact that my degree in court reporting is lying in wait, to be used at my discretion.”
LIBI ALUMNI HOST MOCK DEPOSITION Members of LIBI’s Court Reporters Alumni Association held a mock deposition for students at LIBI’s Commack Campus on Wednesday evening, January 20th. It was the first event of its kind and the response by the students was overwhelming. Due to limited seating and the density of the case, attendance was limited to the high speed (200-225) group of students. In a matter of hours of posting the event, capacity was reached and many students were turned away.
LIBI IS APPROVED FOR HOMELAND SECURITY! LIBI will be offering programs which will provide opportunities for students to increase their academic credentials and to obtain basic knowledge of the competencies needed within the fields of private security or homeland security. Please see someone on the admissions team for more details.
Those attending received valuable experience in deposition procedures, medical vocabulary, and four-voice colloquy. After the deposition was over, students had a very informative question and answer session with the working court reporter alumni. Alumni and students alike had a great time together as they interacted and networked with each other. Alumni involved in the event were Martha Rohl, Workers’ Compensation; Colleen Ruic, Quick Reporting; Peter Toth, Fevola Reporting Services; and Fran Marsico, Suzanne Hand Reporting. 3

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE HUMAN BODY LIBI students studying medical terminology were escorted on a tour of the human body by their instructor, Roseanne Cooper. A recent field trip to New York City took students to the South Street Exhibition Centre on Fulton Street to see Bodies…..The Exhibition, where over 200 specimens of whole bodies, individual organs, and tissue samples are displayed. The exhibition is arranged so that visitors take a journey through the human body beginning with the skeletal system and continuing on through the muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. Students agreed the display was inspiring and definitely helped them to retain the medical terminology they have learned.
Lunar New Year Celebration
LIBI celebrated the Lunar New Year on February 11, 2010 with student performer, Xiao Zhang playing the Guzheng (Zither). Ms. Zhang interpreted two melodies brilliantly and was received with enthusiasm and delight from all who attended; a special thank you to Ms. Zhang for her lovely performance. Happy Lunar New Year!
Flushing Library
LIBI Students Go to the Flushing Public Library! On March 11, 2010, the ESL 008 Reading II class of Linda Dukette paid a visit to the Flushing Public Library. Generously arranged by LIBI’s librarian, Adriana Arguelles, our students had the opportunity to have a guided private tour given by Flushing’s librarian, Anne Siebenhoven. From biographies to business periodicals to DVDs, they explored the newly renovated rooms and exhibits featured at our home branch of the Queens Library system. The Flushing branch has an outstanding collection of reading, writing and literacy programs, all free. LIBI students love learning as evidenced by the inquiries and rapt attention paid. We even got new library cards!
