STROLL THROUGH HUNTINGTON VILLAGE
Art Walk To Highlight Local Exhibits Long Islander News photos/ Sophia Ricco

Take a stroll around Huntington village and stop into the many galleries that will be showcasing artwork and exhibits for the annual art walk on May 20. The Huntington Village Art Walk will feature eight locations across the village, making it a little less than a 1-mile walk. Each location will showcase a featured exhibit and host workshops throughout the day. “We have such a vibrant arts community in this area and unfortunately not everyone realizes that, so it brings that to the forefront of everyone’s mind,” said Kristina Schaaf, associate director of education at Heckscher Museum of Art, one of the eight participating locations. This is the fifth art walk to be hosted by The Huntington Arts Center, which hosts the events in the spring and fall, typically drawing hundreds of participants. In addition to Heckscher, this spring’s walk will feature: Huntington Arts Council; Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building; b.j. spoke gallery; fotofoto gallery; The Moon Rose; Chelsea Studio and Art Gallery; and Digho Musemarket. Each is a fully run studio, gallery or museum that can be viewed and visited by the public at any time. “All of the museums and galleries
do openings and their own thing, but no one had brought all the Huntington village galleries and museums together for one event,” Wendy Curtis, director of the Huntington Arts Center, said. “I thought it would be a good idea to bring us all together for a cohesive artsy community event.” Art has a way of bringing people together through shared experiences and interests that they can channel into their work. The Moon Rose welcomes artists of all kinds to take a class in card making and stamping. They will be hosting a workshop at the art walk that gives people a chance to play with ink and stamps.
“It’s a great way to meet new faces and tell people we are here in the community and we’re keeping art in Huntington,” said Diana Kovacs, owner of The Moon Rose. After closing her store in 2007, Kovacs was approached by fotofoto gallery in 2015 to have a space that would be shared by the gallery and studio. With rent prices increasing in Huntington village, it was a necessity for both art locations to merge. “Since I closed my store, we’ve have a little community of artists that have gotten back together here and enjoy doing the classes,” Kovacs said. The Heckscher Museum will have
Oil paintings, pastels, and watercolors will be displayed at Chelsea Studio and Gallery.
The Heckscher Museum is exhibiting Jan Staller’s “Heavy Metal” photography showcase.

Merich Gulsen, a stain glass artist from Custom Stained Glass, demonstrating his process of creating stained glass, which will be raffled off at the end. There will be raffles throughout the day at the various locations. “The benefit of the collaboration is everyone’s reaching out to their audiences and really pooling all of our contacts together to reach such a broader audience,” Schaaf said. “It exposes people to new places, like they might go to the Arts Center but never come here.” The walk will be running from 12 noon-4 p.m. and is free to the public. It’s recommended to spend around 20 minutes at each location, in order to complete the entire walk. Those who come out will be treated to an art walk with fresh faces and dynamic artwork. “Every time we do a walk, there is completely different artwork that is being exhibited,” Curtis said. “You’ll meet a whole new group of artists, see a whole new set of shows, and we’ll have new musicians playing on our back patio.” For more info, including the map for the self-guided tour, visit Huntingtonartcenter.com.

STROLL THROUGH HUNTINGTON VILLAGE Long Islander News photos/Sophia Ricco & Andrew Wroblewski
Wander Through Huntington’s Heckscher By Andrew Wroblewski awroblewski@longislandergroup.com
The perfect complement to a stroll through Huntington village, Heckscher Park is just a few steps away from the village’s Main Street and its serenity can offer a contrasting balance to the hustle and bustle. Standard days in the park can start with a stroll, lead to a bench beside the lake and continue with an ice cream from the truck typically parked beside the playground.
On busier days, the park plays host to some of the town’s best events, from the annual Tulip Festival that fills it with beautiful shades of pinks, yellows, reds and oranges, to the Huntington Chamber’s biggest party of the year, the Long Island Fall Festival. Whether you’re planning to visit for a quick stroll, moment of peace or exploration, take a look at Long Islander News’ walking tour below, which shows off just a bit of the beauty that is Heckscher Park.
Begin:
Begin at one of the park’s several entrances along Prime Avenue and Main Street, including the main entrance, pictured, at the streets’ intersection.
One of the first stops in the park is the town’s 9/11 Memorial, which is dedicated to the 43 Huntington citizens who were killed in the attacks.
From there, stop in the Heckscher Museum of Art, right, which provides a dynamic schedule of exhibitions and programs for all ages, or perhaps there will be music playing from the Chapin Rainbow Stage, inset.

And when the weather plays nice, the lake and surrounding scenery can create picture perfect moments.
End
Heckscher also has its fair share of wildlife. Keep strolling down the path to the lake. Along the wake, take a peek at the beautiful landscaping that surrounds the path - including the tulips from this year’s festival.
No stroll would be complete without ice cream.
