Grand Marshal Andrew W. Lawrence, Jr.

AT THE HEAD OF THE PARADE ndy Lawrence is an almost lifetime Huntingtonian, moving here at the age of 7 years with his dad, Dr. Andrew Lawrence. He studied for 7 years at St. Patrick’s, then 4 years at Chaminade and then 4 years at Marquette University. He was a decorated Marine captain in Vietnam. After leaving active duty, he returned to Huntington to go to law school at St. John’s. At the same time, he served in the active Marine reserves as the acting commanding officer of the Marine Corps reserve unit in Halesite. After graduating from law school, he served in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office as a Senior Assistant District Attorney in the major crimes bureau, prosecuting many high-profile cases. Since the late 1970s, he has remained a Special Assistant District Attorney, as well as the Village Prosecutor for the Village of Huntington Bay. He was a partner for many years in the

A

old Huntington law firm of Toaz Buck Myers. He has served as general counsel over many years for clients, including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Visiting Nurse Service, Huntington Hospital and various villages, fire departments and public libraries. He has served on the Suffolk County Bar Association’s Grievance, Ethics, Court and Criminal Law committees. Over the years, his community involvement has included stints on the boards of directors of St. Patrick’s Parish Council, Huntington Hospital, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, Family Service League, Huntington Historical Society, Housing Help, the Townwide Fund and the St. Johnland Nursing Center. In each case, he ultimately became an officer and vice-president or president. He has received Huntington Hospital’s Teddy award, Visiting Nurse Service’s Man of the Year award and has twice been honored by the Townwide Fund.

He is married to Pam Lawrence, a retired teacher and lifelong Huntingtonian. His son, A.J., owns the JAR Group, a large multi-division Internet marketing company located in Brooklyn. His son, Brendan, serves as an officer and works for the JAR Group. His daughter, Kerry, a former Army sergeant and jump-master, is now a civilian Family Affairs director with the Department of Defense, in charge of the district comprised of the Pentagon, Ft. Myers and the Marine Corps Headquarters. Her husband, matt Ross, is a director in the Department of Homeland Security. Andy’s grandfather, General George Lawrence, M.D., was the former commanding officer of the 69th regiment (the “Fighting Irish”) before being promoted to a commanding general of the New York State Guard. Joining Andy in the parade as his aides will be lifelong friends and Huntingtonians John “Jay” Cavanagh, Andrew J. Schmitz and John Dooley.

Meet The Colleen:

MOLLY ELIZABETH PREP olly Prep is a senior at Huntington High School, where she was recently named the Salutatorian for the class of 2013. The only child of Kerry and Helen Prep, Molly has lived a busy life filled with achievement and happiness. A lifelong resident of Huntington, Molly is known in the community for her immense love of learning, as well as for her caring and compassionate nature. She is also known for the delicious treats she loves to bake for the whole school. She truly enjoys helping others, which includes everything from tutoring underclassmen to meeting with fellow classmates to aid in conflict resolution as the president of Peer Mediation. As the vice president for both the National Honor Society and the English National Honor Society, and as a member of both Math National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society, she can often be found involved in upcoming community events. Molly still makes time to lead as a Co-Editor-in-Chief for the school newspa-

M

per, and also enjoys running on the Blue Devil Girls Track team. A Long Island Scholar-Artist, Molly’s love of the arts is evident in her creative and expressive photography. Her writing has also proven to be a huge passion. Two of her submissions to the “Poetry for the HART” contest were selected as winners, and her poems can now be read on the interior of HART buses around town. Molly’s biggest focus of her senior year is her involvement with this year’s Relay for Life fundraiser. As a pediatric cancer survivor, Molly finds special meaning in acting as an Event Co-Chair for this worthy cause to be held at Huntington High School on May 17th. Having just hit her ten-year-survivorship milestone, Molly knows firsthand the benefits that proper care and support can bring to cancer patients and their families. She wants to follow the American Cancer Society’s motto, and help in the fight to make a world where there’s less cancer and more birthdays.

Molly also loves working with children; in addition to babysitting for her neighbors, she has volunteered with the town of Huntington’s Playground Program for several years. Beginning as a CIT the summers she was in middle school, Molly has gone on to be a counselor in the preschool program for the past two years. She loves the creative and charming approaches children have with life, and in many ways she aspires to be more like they are. In her free time, Molly loves to read, write, run, take pictures, eat, and spend time with those she loves. Molly is an outgoing and kindhearted person, and she is always there to support her friends and family. Though Molly has yet to make a definite decision on where she plans to go to college, she would like to pursue a degree in psychology, with the hopes of one day helping others process and overcome their struggles. Other than that, when asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Molly is known to simply and honestly reply, “Happy!”

Her late grandfather John Murphy was also from the ole sod from County Longford. Tara’s paternal grandmother is Martha Crowley Zebrowski whose family has along history in the A.O.H. Tara’s greatgreat grandfather Daniel Crowley Sr. came across the pond from County Cork in the 1880’s and became a member of the newly formed Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division One in Yonkers. He served 3 terms as county president and organized several A.O.H.Auxiliary Divisions in Lower Westchester. Tara made a visit to Ireland with her family some years back to meet her many,

As parades go, Tara has gone to many a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC with her extended family of Irish cousins and friends and is honored to be The Colleen of Huntington’s Parade this year. Tara is a senior at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset. She has been a very active member of the student body for her entire four years, never leaving school at 3 p.m. She has spent a great deal of her time as a member of the Mercy Players and has had leading roles in their productions. She worked very hard this past year helping to put on their own original production. She has also been a member of Mission Committee helping different charitable causes each year, such as bringing awareness to others of the horrendous practice of human trafficking. Tara has spent the past several summers attending Theatre Arts Centre summer camp, where after four weeks of intensive preparation they put on a fantastic show. She is passionate about singing, dancing and theatre and hopes to pursue those interests in her future college plans. The core of the parade is, of course, the bagpipe bands, and no parade on Long Island can match Huntington’s lineup of bands from all over the Island. Returning is the highly sought after NYPD Emerald Society Pipes and Drum Band, the Suffolk County Police Emerald Society Pipe Band, and their counterparts from Nassau County. For 79 years the parade has been a wonderful family community event going all the way back to the Depression when

Andrew’s family will be cheering him on, with his granddaughter Katie riding nearby as a “Wee Colleen.” Among the aides marching at Lawrence’s side will be Huntington Councilman Gene Cook and lifelong residents and friends John “Jay” Cavanagh, Andrew J. Schmitz and John Dooley. They will lead one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in Huntington history with more pipe bands than ever before.

T

his Sunday spectators will have dozens of great pubs and restaurants in a vibrant Huntington village to choose from to enjoy the parade that would have been hard to imagine back in the 1930s. The parade is not only a great community event, but according to Chamber of Commerce Chairman Bob Bontempi, it’s also a tremendous catalyst to the local Huntington economy, with spectators packing the local restaurants, shops, and pubs. With the current rough economic times and the brutal winter weather, “buying local” not only feels good, it helps all of us.

Brady, who is also the parade’s journal chairman, added, “Many residents mistakenly think the town sponsors the parade each year, but in truth it’s actually the Hibernians who organize, promote, run and raise the money needed to pay for all the expenses associated with putting on this spectacular parade. Each year, the Hibernians go door to door soliciting donations from local businesses for advertisements which appear in this special St. Patrick’s Day Parade edition of the local newspaper. He added, “We have been very fortunate that each year almost all our local officials join us at our annual Grand Marshal’s Ball to kick off the parade weekend.” The ball – one of the best social events of the year featuring bagpipers, step dancers, a live band and plenty of dancing – kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at the Crescent Club on Friday, March 9.

The parade honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who converted the pagan Celts to Christianity around the year 430 A.D. St. Patrick founded the cathedral church of Armagh, and it soon became the center of the Church’s activities in Ireland. During his three decades in Ireland, he raised the standards of scholarship, encouraged the study of Latin and brought Ireland into closer relations with the rest of the Western Church until his death on March 17, in 461 A.D.

The parade will kick off just north of the Huntington Train Station along New York Avenue before turning west onto Main Street and ending at St. Patrick’s School. This year will be no different. On Sunday, March 10 beginning at 2 p.m. in Huntington village, Andrew Lawrence Jr., of Huntington, an attorney, philanthropist, decorated Marine captain in Vietnam, and longtime friend of the A.O.H, leads the 79th annual St. Patrick’s parade as the grand marshal.

Hibernians Help Stock Area Food Pantries Although the Huntington Hibernians’ focus this Sunday will be on the parade and celebrating Irish culture, the organization is also keenly aware of another piece of Irish history. The history of the Irish is not one of all harmony, peace and celebration. In most cases, the daily life for the Irish, in this country and in Ireland, was one of struggle and hardship. Through the many years of the Irish famine, “Great Hunger” and their never-ending fight for freedom and human rights, the Irish became even more committed to their families, friends

and improving the quality of life in their communities. Past President Jack Ryan, AOH Charities & Missions Chairman, stated that each year Division 4 is a leading contributor to the area's eight local parish food pantries and when the call came in asking for Thanksgiving help, the Division as usual responded. "The Division has a long history of helping our local parish food pantries. Back in the 90s, most of the work was done by a late brother, Jim Regan," Past President Ryan mentioned. "When Jim

passed away a few years ago, the Division decided to memorialize his work by formally creating the Jim Regan Memorial Food Drive, not only continuing his work but greatly expanding it."

True to the mission of Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity, the Hibernian members enjoy working together reaching out to their neighbors to help the less fortunate.

Walk With The Irish Our Annual Pub Crawl A.O.H. members outside a Huntington supermarket soliciting donations for area food banks.

In keeping with our motto of “Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,” we gather together for an annual pub crawl to raise donations for charity. Our group follows bag pipers through Huntington to visit our sponsors and enjoy an afternoon with good friends.
