What began as a small editor’s choice arts and entertainment program has truly taken on a life of its own—this year marking the second of an award-winning partnership with LI’s favorite financial institution, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Bethpage Best of L.I. has become the largest business awards program in the history of Long Island. This year’s competition features more than 6,800 unique nominees in 450 categories, with more than 900 Long Island winners! Yet to select the very best, the very best have to be in it to win it. So, to fine-tune the program, revisions are constantly made. Last year, the Bethpage Best of L.I. competition introduced new subcategories, such as Best Smoothie, Best Life Coach and Best Author. It also added an entire Weddings section, introducing voters to 25 new subcategories, including: Accommodations, Bands, Favors, Florists, Jewelry, Event Planning and Best Place to Host a Bridal Shower, among others. This year’s contest includes even more additions to the program—20 new subcategories in all—among them: Best Party Event Company, Spinach Pie, Funeral Home, Taxi Service—even Best Nachos!

Our personal favorites? Well, that’d be the Bacon Menu Item and Cheesesteak categories, of course! Expect even more next year. For animal lovers wondering where to find their companions natural food or mini raincoats—or cute lil’ toys— check out our expanded Pets section, which includes such categories as: Best Grooming Salon, Best Organic Pet Food/Supply Store, Best Pet Clothing Store and even Best Pet Photographer. As always, the nominees for 2014 were chosen by Long Islanders—and it’s those same Long Islanders who’ve decided which of these have made it to the very top. The Jan. 17 issue of the Bethpage Best of L.I. awards competition, Part II, will feature the winners across the Food & Drink, Sports & Activities, Restaurants, Nightlife & Spirits, Arts & Entertainment and Automotive categories. The Bethpage Best of the Best and Best of Weddings issue will be published Jan. 24. The 1970s tennis boom has diminished

Thirty-eight years ago, Jim Donnelly opened Grand Slam Tennis. During that time, the amount of people playing tennis was fierce. The tennis clubs on Long Island were competing with one another to keep their players and help grow the game. Today, however, tennis needs a jump-start to re-invigorate the game we all know and love.

How can we regain interest in tennis?

Jim and Chase Donnelly, owners of Grand Slam Tennis, have developed the concept of Tennis 1,2,3 RIP, which stands for “Racquet + Instruction= Play”This simple concept targets adults and adolescents while utilizing the new and innovative 10 & Under Tennis teaching tools. Tennis 1,2,3 RIP allows for an inexpensive and fun introduction to the sport of tennis.

Benefits of the program? Through Tennis 1,2,3 RIP, interested parties can learn to play tennis in a fun and controlled environment. Instruction is basic and the sport is introduced using low-compression and foam balls. Juniors will use

a variety of racquets, ranging from 25- to 26- inches, and adults will use 27-inch racquets with two head sizes, 105- and 110- inches.

Who qualifies and how does the program work?

Ages six through adult are ideal candidates for the program. Interested parties can purchase a racquet from Grand Slam Tennis in Commack. Contact a participating tennis facility or the SCJTL to purchase your lesson package.

The end result

Jim and Chase formed and are launching the idea of Tennis 1,2,3 RIP in hopes of growing the sport. Jim spent a great deal of time contacting the area’s local facilities in hopes of getting them on board with the idea. All of the clubs agreed that tennis needs a jump-start in introducing new players to the sport and to grow the game in the future. Launching the Tennis 1,2,3 RIP program will introduce people to the sport of tennis at a low cost and provide them with a great time learning the game.
